Remembering Partner Bonni Kaufman
Partner Bonni Kaufman (WAS), an environmental law attorney and member of Holland & Knight’s Public Policy & Regulation Group, passed away on August 26 following a brief illness. Bonni spent the past 17 years at the firm, where her devotion to clients, her support of colleagues, and her collegiality and humor in adversarial situations earned her the respect of all who had the good fortune to know her.
“Bonni was an active member of the Washington, D.C., Women’s Initiative,” said Partner Christy Shiker (WAS). “She was an excellent attorney and mentor to other women and was always willing to help and attend our events.”
“As a member of Holland & Knight’s Rising Star class of 2007, Bonni was an exemplary classmate, encouraging and inspiring others to go out of their comfort zones to progress in their careers,” said Partner Deb Barnard (BOS). “She was also an active alumna of the program who led by example in addition to helping others advance in whatever way she could.”
“Bonni was a special friend and colleague,” added Partner Janis Schiff (WAS). “She had great judgement, a wonderful sense of humor and was a great judge of people. Bonni had the ability to make everyone feel comfortable. She also had a great family and loved them completely.”
Bonni represented industrial, transportation, real estate, consumer products and manufacturing clients in a
wide variety of matters relating to environmental laws, focusing on regulatory enforcement and compliance, product regulation, litigation and environmental aspects of corporate and real estate transactions. She counseled clients with respect to compliance with environmental regulatory requirements under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and state laws, and successfully resolved enforcement actions and litigation related to violations of environmental regulations and migration of contamination. According to her environmental colleagues, Bonni made a long-lasting impact on the practice of environmental law

NOTE FROM THE HOLLAND & KNIGHT WOMEN’S INITIATIVE CHAIR
This issue of Women Lawyers, Women Leaders is dedicated to Partner Bonni Kaufman (WAS), who passed unexpectedly in August. Bonni, a Holland & Knight Rising Star alum, epitomized many qualities that reflect the firm’s culture and the spirit of our Women’s Initiative. She was an expert in her field of practice, provided excellent client service and served as a mentor to so many. She will be missed. Please keep her family in your prayers.
The firm had a busy spring and summer with many achievements to celebrate. We moved up in the rankings of Seramount’s Best Law Firms for Women survey and achieved Mansfield Certified Plus status for the fifth consecutive year. Our women participated in two of CenterForce’s Driving Diversity in Law & Leadership Summits in Washington, D.C., Dallas and Atlanta. Partner Kristi Soppet (HOU) attended a unique conference hosted by MothersEsquire, where working mothers were encouraged to bring their children. The summer also brought us more than 45 female summer associates, along with many networking events and outings. Several of the summer associates share their favorite experiences and fun facts about themselves in this issue.
In August, we also heard from best-selling author and film critic Elizabeth Weitzman, who shared a fascinating look at how women in law have been depicted in film and television for the past century. Our summer associates were all provided with copies of her book, Renegade Women in Hollywood. We also closed out August with Women’s Equality Day, celebrating 101 years of our most powerful tool for change – the right to vote. Please exercise it in your local and upcoming midterm elections!
Best, Judy
and most notably on the nation’s approach to addressing equitable allocations for historic contamination concerns under CERCLA.
Bonni also represented developers, lenders and bond issuers in connection with military housing privatization projects around the country. She advised clients in connection with the purchase, sale and development of environmentally impacted properties and brownfields development, and advised public companies with respect to environmental and climate change disclosures.
“Bonni was not only our partner, she was our friend,” said Government Section Leader Karen Walker (TAL/WAS). “She was an exceptional lawyer who was adored by her clients and her colleagues. Perhaps her greatest gift was her limitless enthusiasm for mentoring, a gift to the firm that we will carry with her memory.”
Throughout her career, Bonni was active in the legal community, serving in various leadership roles for the American Bar Association (ABA) and District of Columbia Bar. She also earned recognition from The Best Lawyers in America and Chambers USA in Environmental Law and was a Holland & Knight Rising Star in 2007. In 2022, Bonni was named a Client Service All-Star by The BTI Consulting Group. Her D.C. environmental team shared that this was the award she was most proud of and, in their opinion, was the most fitting award for Bonni’s exemplary history, consistency and close relationships with her clients, several of whom she worked with for more than 30 years, and all of whom considered her a friend.
Bonni earned her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1984 and a B.A. from Emory University in 1981.
“Bonni was an exceptional environmental lawyer, trusted mentor and close friend to many in the firm,” said Managing Partner Steven Sonberg (MIA). “Please keep Bonni’s husband Rob, their children and other family members in your thoughts and prayers.”
If you are interested in making a donation in Bonni’s memory, please consider the American Kidney Fund. Bonni was an advocate for and a supporter of this organization, having received a kidney transplant at a young age.
Firm Earns Mansfield Certified Plus Status for 5th Straight Year
Firm Recognized Among 50 Best Law Firms for Women
Seramount, now part of EAB, has once again named Holland & Knight among the 50 Best Law Firms for Women. The annual list by Seramount (formerly Working Mother Media) recognizes firms that utilize best practices in recruiting, retaining, promoting and developing women lawyers.
For the fifth year in a row, Holland & Knight has achieved “Mansfield Certified Plus” status from Diversity Lab, an incubator for innovative ideas and solutions that boost diversity and inclusion in law. The Mansfield Rule initiative aims to increase the number of women, minority, LGBTQ+ and disabled lawyers in leadership and governance roles at law firms.
The Mansfield Rule Certification process measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered at least 30 percent women, underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, LGBTQ+ lawyers and lawyers with disabilities for leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, formal client pitch opportunities, Chambers USA nomination, senior lateral positions and administrative chair positions.
Holland & Knight also belongs to a smaller subset of firms achieving “Mansfield Certified Plus” designation. This category recognizes that, in addition to meeting or exceeding the baseline certification requirements, underrepresented lawyers represent at least 30 percent of a significant number of firm leadership roles.
“As an inaugural Mansfield Rule participant firm, we have witnessed the benefits of our partnership with Diversity Lab firsthand,” said Partner and Directors Committee Chair Kelly-Ann Cartwright (MIA). “Not only has it strengthened our resolve to support an even more inclusive workplace at our firm, it also has enhanced our relationships and led to additional business opportunities with clients who share our unwavering commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.”
Seramount’s 2022 Best Law Firms for Women application included more than 300 questions about attorney demographics at different levels, schedule flexibility, paid time off and parental leaves, and development and retention of women. Questions also included the ability to work from home some of the time, family-friendly benefits and mentoring and sponsorship participation.
Highlights of the 2022 Best Law Firms for Women include:
• The percentage of women managing partners (or equivalent prominent leader and spokesperson for the firm, other than the chairperson or equivalent) increased to 43 percent, up from 34 percent in 2021.
• Critical assignments went to women, further leveling the playing field: 38 percent of members of the firms’ management committees were women (vs. 35 percent last year); 38 percent of those deciding promotions to equity partner were women (vs. 34 percent last year); and 36 percent of those determining compensation were women (vs. 34 percent last year).
• There are more multicultural women (MCW) at every level: 29 percent of all women lawyers were MCW (vs. 27 percent last year); 36 percent of women associates were MCW (vs. 34 percent last year); 18 percent of women equity partners were MCW (vs. 16 percent last year); and 22 percent of women equity partners promoted were MCW (vs. 18 percent last year).
• As hiring and retention became more competitive, law firms stepped up their family-friendly benefits: the average fully paid gender-neutral parental leave for associates increased to 16 weeks (vs. 13 weeks last year); 67 percent of firms now cover in vitro fertilization (vs. 52 percent last year); and 80 percent of firms are now hybrid workplaces.
“As we emerge from the pandemic and the legal profession adapts to a hybrid work environment, this recognition takes on more significance and reflects our firm’s continuing commitment to our women attorneys and professionals,” said Partner and Women’s Initiative Chair Judy Nemsick (NYC).
Courtney Worcester Honored at NAWL Annual Meeting
In addition, attendees gathered to recognize and honor leading lawyers who have made a significant impact to improve and diversify the legal profession, as well as NAWL members who, through their time and effort, have made exceptional contributions to fulfilling NAWL’s mission. Courtney received the Virginia S. Mueller Outstanding Member Award in honor of her transformative work as co-executive editor for the organization’s Women Lawyers Journal, as well as her dedication to elevating and expanding the voices of women in law.
Attorneys Attend Diversity Summits in Dallas and D.C.
Holland & Knight sponsored and had a notable presence at CenterForce’s Driving Diversity in Law & Leadership Summits in Dallas and Washington, D.C.
Partner Jessica Farmer, Senior Counsel June Marshall, Senior Policy Advisor Shawna Watley and Associate Dariya Golubkova (all WAS) attended the Washington, D.C., event on June 8. Shawna participated in the panel titled “Cultivating Allies and Change Agents.”
Partners Renee Lewis, Maria Metropulos (both CHI) and Courtney Worcester (BOS), along with Summer Associate Elizabeth Gaskins (CHI), attended the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) Annual Meeting in Chicago on July 21. The firm is a sustaining sponsor of the organization.
This year marked NAWL’s first in-person conference since the pandemic. Attendees participated in interesting substantive programming and networking opportunities, all focused on the theme, “Metamorphosis: Reemerge Transformed.” The opening session included tips to develop resilience skills to rise stronger through struggles and how to embrace vulnerability to ultimately transform to live more authentic and courageous lives. Morning panels focused on recent, major shifts in the workplace, as well as how to address the legal process and challenges in supporting a business launch and incorporation. Speakers also shared how they’ve advanced their careers, overcome challenges and the choices that have shaped their success. The afternoon focused on the power of nonverbal communication, both personally and professionally; data privacy in a post-Roe world; and a panel discussion on voting rights.
“The conference provided a safe space in which to have an open and honest dialogue about the challenges facing equity and inclusion for women attorneys, particularly diverse attorneys,” said June. “The panelists and fellow attendees provided practical solutions and strategies in order to continue to move the needle for diversity in a positive direction, which was very encouraging to me.”
Partners Tricia DeLeon and Catherine Rowsey (both DAL) attended the Dallas event on June 16. Former Partner Nadia Haghighatian moderated a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) panel on creating a culture of inclusion, and Catherine led a general counsel roundtable discussion on nurturing the next generation in the legal profession.
“I was impressed by how many in-house leaders attended this conference,” said Tricia. “The main theme I heard from these leaders is to be intentional about reaching out to your team to ensure that they are receiving challenging work, feel included in the firm/company and ask what they need from you to succeed.”
The summits – part of CenterForce’s Diversity in Law Series – explored the “new normal” after COVID-19 and the effect that it will have on the career paths of women and underrepresented professionals in legal and corporate America. Topics discussed included how leadership is evolving to meet the challenges of the post-pandemic world, should companies be doing more to create a culture of inclusion that goes beyond metrics, and the best strategies for recruiting and retaining diverse talent. The conference also affords women attorneys the opportunity to network in person again with influential in-house counsel who share a commitment to DEI efforts in the legal profession.
MothersEsquire Seeks to Achieve Greater Equity in Legal Profession
Have you ever considered the networking opportunities commonly available to lawyer moms as they build their careers? Happy hours during daycare pick-up time. Dinner meetings that run past bedtime. Conferences without breastfeeding accommodations. Unpaid speaking engagements. In 2022, a group of lawyer moms is proving there is another way.
Partner Kristi Soppet (HOU) represented Holland & Knight at the MothersEsquire inaugural conference, held on May 13 in Louisville, Kentucky. MothersEsquire is devoted to achieving greater equity within the legal profession for women lawyers with children by recognizing and working to remove the obstacles that contribute to a much higher attrition rate among women than men. Kristi, a mom to three kids under five years old, is an active member of the nonprofit organization.
The conference, themed “Together We Rise,” was truly the first of its kind and was designed to remove as many of the common barriers that make conference attendance challenging for women lawyers with children, especially young ones. True to this mission, its first conference modeled how others can and should accommodate these obstacles in the setting of a professional conference. Specifically, MothersEsquire paid each of its speakers, provided on-site childcare and provided nursing/pumping rooms with livestreaming of each continuing legal education (CLE) session so that nursing and pumping moms were able to remain fully involved in the conference. These accommodations allowed Kristi and other lawyer moms to travel to the conference with children in tow.
In addition, MothersEsquire curated CLE content perfectly aimed at its audience. Presentations included Paulette Brown, the first black woman president of the American Bar Association (ABA), who spoke on the ABA’s efforts to combat the “caregiver penalty” and COVID-19’s exacerbation thereof; Jeena Cho, a litigator who trains lawyers on using mindfulness to avoid burnout; Rachel Bailey, a psychologist who shared parenting lessons specifically for lawyer parents; and Amy Pardieck, a female jury consultant who shared her research regarding how jurors perceive lawyer moms. The afternoon break for cupcakes and champagne did not miss the mark, either. One takeaway worth sharing? If you’re looking to delegate some weekend chores to make time for an extra trip to the park, check out the app SudShare for a delivery-ondemand laundry service available in more than 300 cities!
Law Students Spend Their Summers at Holland & Knight
More than 75 law students joined Holland & Knight offices across the U.S. to gain valuable hands-on legal experience as summer associates, in addition to taking time to get to know each other and making meaningful connections and memories
Meet some of our women summer associates as they share their thoughts on what attracted them to the firm, their most memorable experience and – just for fun – an interesting fact about them.
Erica Adams (MIA): University of Miami School of Law
I engaged in a thorough due diligence period prior to interviewing with Holland & Knight, which included scouring the internet to learn anything I could, but more importantly, it involved talking to every lawyer I knew to get their take on the firm. Across the board, Miami attorneys said the same thing about Holland & Knight – impressive lawyers and an unmatched culture. I didn’t understand quite what that meant until I spoke with the people here – not just the attorneys but also the recruitment team. I realized that of all the impressive law firms in Miami, Holland & Knight was the place I could grow alongside not only extraordinary attorneys but also kind, generous and quality people.
It’s almost impossible to choose just one favorite experience, but during the last week of the program, it started to settle in that we had only a few days left, and quite unanimously, no one wanted it to end. We joked about walking into [the office] on the very first day and the nerves that we were each hiding. We were strangers back then, but fast-forward 10 short weeks and we became a big-law version of “The Breakfast Club.” The sentiment in the room was gratitude for the experience and enthusiasm for the future.
Fun fact: When I’m not in law school, I spend my free time building an app that I’ve been wanting to develop for years. Last year, I mustered up the courage to pursue it, and pretty soon we’ll be entering the “beta testing” phase. Fingers crossed that it all works out, because I think everyone at Holland & Knight would enjoy using it.
In addition to the outstanding reputation that Holland & Knight holds in the legal community, it was the people that attracted me to the firm. During the process of obtaining a summer associate internship, the Holland & Knight attorneys I met on my interview – and those I reached out to in preparation of my interview –stood out among the masses. Their genuinely positive opinions of the firm and the culture at Holland & Knight painted a picture of a supportive group that resembled a family more than colleagues, and I wanted to be a part of that. In the world of “big law,” it’s a well-known fact it will require hard work and long hours to succeed, but that was not my concern; rather, who I would be spending those hours with. From the start, the Holland & Knight community made me feel comfortable and included, and that first impression was only confirmed throughout my summer.
My favorite memories are the events with the fellow summers! Through those events, I gained 14 new best friends [throughout South Florida].
Fun fact: I recently overcame my biggest fear – swimming with sharks!
Alexandra Duplin (BOS): Suffolk University Law School
I was initially drawn to the firm by the variety of practice groups and commitment to minority initiatives like the Women’s Initiative, but my interviewers sealed the deal. I could instantly tell that Holland & Knight’s culture and atmosphere were something I wanted to be a part of.
My favorite social experience this summer was attending Partner Michael Manthei’s rooftop party. The food, view, music and conversations were all-around excellent. My favorite professional experience was being trusted with high-level assignments from day 1. I felt valued and respected, which motivated me to produce a great work product.
Fun fact: I’m a published author. My submission for the book, Not Quite What I Was Planning: And Other Six Word Memoirs, was chosen when I was in high school. My memoir is: Hockey Is Not Just For Boys
I was drawn to Holland & Knight immediately. Throughout my interviews and networking, attorneys consistently framed conversations around growth and nurturing. I could tell the firm was interested in who I am as a person and what I can uniquely bring to the table.
My favorite experience as a summer associate was our rooftop party at the Envoy hotel. While there were so many amazing experiences this summer, this event featured a large number of attorneys, and it was a beautiful setting.
Fun fact: I participated in the running of the interns outside of the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018! I ran the travel ban decision from the court clerk’s office to the cameras stationed outside.
Malorie Eisenbrei (PHL): Temple University School of Law
I had a good feeling about Holland & Knight after the interview process because I felt I connected with the attorneys I spoke to. Everyone struck me as very down-to-earth and enthusiastic about their work. I was excited to work at the firm’s Philadelphia office in particular because it is a relatively new location that is quickly expanding. I like the idea of being part of a firm that is growing in the local area – and hopefully contributing to that growth in the future!
I greatly enjoyed the pro bono projects I participated in this summer. I had the privilege of working on an educational workshop for small business owners in the Philadelphia area. This project allowed me to meet and collaborate with clients and nonprofit partners from outside the firm.
Fun fact: I know how to play the mountain dulcimer! I learned when I was in middle school, and then picked it up again in college. I’d like to start practicing again in the future.
Sanaa Ghanim (DAL): Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law
The people. The attorneys at Holland & Knight whom I’ve had the opportunity to learn from and work with have shown
me that this is a firm that will meaningfully invest in my personal and professional development.
My favorite experience as a summer associate was attending the Women’s Initiative Coffee Chats on Thursday mornings. The Coffee Chats always served as an opportunity to learn about the experiences of women in the firm who have paved the way.
Fun fact: I have my favorite poem (Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116) memorized.
Sam Ladines (NYC): Pace University School of Law
The sense of community interested me in Holland & Knight. The Women’s Initiative meetings and events always felt like a time when I was able to speak candidly to other women about how to navigate the field of law as a woman.
My favorite experience as a summer associate was being able to see how the law worked in “real life.” I would get so excited when I could assist on an assignment that dealt with an issue or law I read and learned about from my case books and professors.
Fun fact: In my free time, I edit screenplays. The last screenplay I edited was about a vampire romance.
Cristina Salazar (DEN): University of Wyoming College of Law
Holland & Knight’s robust practice groups interested me the most. I also appreciated that the firm could provide me with a unique kind of support and mentorship through their Affinity Groups.
I enjoyed interacting with the clients and learning from experienced litigators during a week-long trial. I also enjoyed attending a professional soccer game with the office and interacting with everyone outside of the office. The team environment in both capacities affirmed this is a firm where I can grow into the attorney I want to be.
Fun fact: I played Division I soccer at the University of Wyoming, which is why I enjoyed the soccer game so much!
Nisa Sheikh (DAL): The University of Texas School of LawThe people are what drew me to Holland & Knight. The culture felt like the right fit for me, and that was reiterated during the summer program this year.
I really enjoyed the Eataly cooking class with the real estate group this summer! It was so much fun cooking with everyone and getting to know the group better.
Fun fact: I went to 13 different schools before graduating high school and have lived all over the world!
Emily Vest (DAL): Louisiana State University Law Center
The thing that interested me in Holland & Knight was the people and the atmosphere. Holland & Knight didn’t live up to the “horror stories” you hear about big law. Instead, it’s more like a big family. That’s one thing that fueled my interest in the firm.
My favorite experience was the cooking class at Eataly where we got to learn how to make ravioli and enjoy wine, charcuterie and Italian desserts.
Fun fact: I studied British Politics in the United Kingdom for about a month. It is one of my fondest memories and an experience that I will never forget.
Keiana Wilkerson (TAL): Florida State University College of Law
I was interested in Holland & Knight’s wide array of practice groups, its national presence and its reputation for handling complex cases and putting out good results. I wanted to be in a work environment where I would be challenged and exposed to interesting issues. After meeting Holland & Knight lawyers in my interview and summer associateship, I also came to really like the people and the culture. Big law gets a bad reputation, but my summer taught me that Holland & Knight doesn’t fall into that narrative.
My favorite memory was seeing everyone at the escape room summer social event. It was funny to see a bunch of lawyers do an escape room, and the room was also very engaging. I had a good time getting to know everyone in the Tallahassee office. I also enjoyed all the observational
opportunities to attend depositions, a hearing and a mediation.
Fun fact: I play video games in my spare time.
The following women also served as summer associates:

Challenging Hollywood’s Views on Women Attorneys
Movies and TV shows are about entertainment, but thinking about those mediums only in that respect severely underestimates their impact on those who consume them.
That is the view of award-winning journalist, speaker and bestselling author Elizabeth Weitzman, who shared her research and thoughts on how women attorneys have been portrayed throughout the decades on the big and small screen in an August 16 webinar, “Hollywood on Trial: Images of Women in Law,” hosted by Partner and Women’s Initiative Chair Judy Nemsick (NYC).
“In addition to entertaining us, pop culture does one of two things: it either supports the status quo or it challenges the status quo,” said Weitzman, a former film critic for the New York Daily News who currently covers movies for The Wrap. “Our culture has focused on women in law recently, which is wonderful. But it has been a much longer and more complex road than most people realize.”
According to Weitzman, the first movie portrayal of a female lawyer occurred more than a century ago, in the 1916 silent film, “Where Are My Children?” It was directed by Lois Weber, whom Weitzman said, “specialized in pushing the envelope” and considered movies an alternative to journalism and a way for everyone to learn about the most important issues of the day.
“This is a great example of how essential representation is. Weber was the first mainstream filmmaker to attempt to normalize the notion of women as capable and intelligent enough to take responsibility for their own healthcare and also to succeed even in the most prestigious kind of work,” Weitzman said. “Because that is what representation does – it moves society forward.”
However, during the Golden Age of Hollywood, the 1930s to 1950s, women’s onscreen professional passions often were subverted and replaced with more traditional societal roles. But there were exceptions, such as when Katherine Hepburn played a fiery attorney in the 1949 film “Adam’s Rib,” from which Weitzman shared a clip.
Mirror Images
For the next couple of decades, the vast majority of movie lawyer roles were filled by men. This was a reflection of society, considering that in 1960, only 3 percent of law students were women, and in 1970, it was 8 percent, Weitzman said. But by 1985, that percentage grew to 40, and Hollywood responded, albeit slowly.
“Even though women were portraying lawyers more than ever before, these movies often reflected a deep distrust or even a fear of female power,” she said. “’Jagged Edge,’ ‘Suspect,’ ‘Legal Eagles’ and ‘A Few Good Men’ were some of the mainstream movies that finally showed women in law as strong and capable, but none of them acknowledged professional women of color, and all of them undermined their heroines in the end in one way or another. It wasn’t until 1988 that we finally got a true culture changer with a movie called ‘The Accused.’”
The movie starred Kelly McGillis as a prosecutor involved with investigating the case of a rape victim played by Jodie Foster. Weitzman played the trailer, which, like the film, leads with a then-mainstream view of sexual assault before challenging that status quo at the end. She rounded out her presentation by examining how women lawyers have been depicted on TV in the past 25 years – not always positively, such as the namesake character played by Calista Flockhart in the 1997-2002 series “Ally McBeal.”
“She was a hugely iconic and influential figure, which was great. But when you watch scenes from the first episode, notice all the ways that Ally’s power is already being subtly undermined. She’s always being interrupted, or she’s trying to catch up, both literally and figuratively, which means that our first and most important impression is of a woman who is never on solid ground,” said Weitzman, who contrasted that depiction with Viola Davis’ lead character in “How to Get Away with Murder.”
Debuting in 2014, the latter show featured a Black criminal defense attorney and law school professor, Annalise Keating, a character who “obviously wasn’t written to be unthreatening – she was written to be respected,” Weitzman said. “Annalise is flawed because she’s human. But instead of constantly apologizing, she’s introduced to us as being unapologetically confident and as an undisputed leader. She’s also responsible for a generation of notably diverse students who look to her as a role model.”
Davis won an Emmy for playing Annalise, a role that Weitzman said, “rewrote our communal view of women in law.”
The Ultimate Gatekeepers
In the end, Weitzman said, female viewers should be reminded of their power as gatekeepers by “actively insisting on elevating perspectives that we haven’t seen before or that we haven’t seen enough.”
“We all get to choose which representations we reject and which ones we embrace,” she added. “And the more we think about and challenge the images that we see and the stories that we are told, the more progress we will make not only in popular culture but in real life as well.”
3 Holland & Knight Attorneys Honored as 2022 Law360 Rising Stars
Three Holland & Knight attorneys have been selected as 2022 “Rising Stars” by Law360. The honor recognizes the top lawyers under age 40 in the country in 36 practice areas.
Law360 reviewed more than 1,350 submissions for the 2022 “Rising Stars” distinction. A total of 176 winners were
selected based on their career accomplishments in their respective practice areas.
Partner Tory Koob (LON) was selected in the Transportation category. According to her Law360 feature, she is skilled in cross-border asset finance and leasing arrangements, with a particular focus on major aircraft acquisitions and sales, finance lease transactions, operating leases, aircraft financing and delivery arrangements and fleet purchasing contracts. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, there were hundreds of aircraft grounded and huge uncertainty about when flying could return. The number of airlines facing difficulties was significant, and this impacted all of the top leasing companies in the world. Tory helped numerous lessors protect their assets, restructure and/or renegotiate their leasing arrangements with various airlines to deal with the tough economic conditions, including advising lessors with respect to four different Chapter 11 proceedings and other local insolvency-related restructurings.
Partner Anjuli Woods (DEN/LAX) was selected in the Media & Entertainment category. She focuses her practice on complex, high-value business disputes covering a variety of industries, including real estate, commercial retail and healthcare. She has significant courtroom experience, including handling several long-cause trials. Anjuli’s Law360 profile features her work navigating the legal saga that followed the sudden death in 2020 of Tony Hsieh, the CEO and founder of Zappos. She is part of a multi-office, multi-practice team defending the deceased billionaire’s estate against more than $130 million in claims and clarifying ownership rights of his media and entertainment business. In addition, she led a team that resolved claims around the sale of Hsieh’s stake in the “Life is Beautiful” music festival, clearing the way for its purchase by an iconic buyer.
Associate Meaghan Colligan (WAS) was selected in the Environmental category. She advises on the environmental aspects of real estate and corporate acquisitions, manages environmental, health and safety compliance programs, and provides litigation and enforcement defense at Superfund sites, including one of the most expensive sites in the program’s 30-plus year history. In her Law360 feature, Meaghan was recognized for leading the firm’s efforts to advise the chemicals industry on a national regulatory framework for recycling and other key developments. She serves as a key adviser to the American Chemistry Council (ACC) in an international effort to create a circular economy for plastics by using
advanced technology. With her assistance, the ACC recently issued an action plan that asks Congress to require all plastic packaging to include at least 30 percent recycled plastic by 2030, create an enabling federal regulatory system, strengthen existing recycling systems and incentivize private industry in its innovative technological advancements.
Moms Groups Manage the Practice of Law with Motherhood
Did you know that Holland & Knight has several Moms Groups that operate as an extension of the Women’s Initiative?
By way of example, the Texas New and Expecting Moms Group, which includes mothers across the firm’s Texas offices, began as a way for mothers of little ones to come together and discuss tips and tricks for managing the practice of law and the practice of motherhood.
