THE STORY OF MUSIC CITY
Nashville’s roots are deeply entwined with music. Founded in the late 1700s, early settlers celebrated with fiddle tunes along the Cumberland River. The Fisk Jubilee Singers, known for their global tours, helped establish Nashville as a music capital, even earning accolades from the Queen of England.
By the 1930s, Jefferson Street became a vibrant hub for R&B, featuring legends such as Jimi Hendrix and Etta James. The Ryman Auditorium, built in 1892, is Nashville’s iconic venue, hosting the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974 and featuring stars such as Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton.
Nashville is also known as the “Songwriting Capital of the World,” attracting songwriters from around the globe. The Bluebird Cafe and the annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival showcase original talent in an intimate setting.
With a diverse music scene encompassing pop, rock and blues, Nashville continues to be a creative haven. It is home to the renowned Schermerhorn Symphony Center and over 180 live music venues, helping to ensure that the city buzzes with live performances year-round.

CITY INFORMATION
GEOGRAPHY
Geographically, Middle Tennessee begins with the Cumberland Plateau, which rises to about 2,000 feet above sea level and lies west of East Tennessee’s Great Valley. Despite its name, the plateau is not flat; there are a number of steep valleys in the plateau, the largest being the Sequatchie Valley.
The Highland Rim is a region of hills, valleys and fertile farmland that lies west of the plateau. The largest physical region of Tennessee, the Highland Rim contains 10,650 square miles of land, or almost 25 percent of the state. Almost entirely surrounded by the Highland Rim is the Central Basin, a low, flat and fertile region in north-central Tennessee. Nashville is located in the Central Basin.
Nashville itself sits at 550 feet above sea level. It is the U.S. city with the second-largest land mass: more than 500 square miles.
WEATHER
Fall in Nashville, Tennessee, is a vibrant season filled with colorful foliage, crisp air and lively events. As the leaves change, the city comes alive with festivals such as the Nashville Oktoberfest and the Tennessee State Fair. Enjoy scenic walks along the Cumberland River or in nearby parks, where you can soak in the beautiful autumn landscapes. With cozy cafes offering seasonal treats and a bustling music scene, Nashville in the fall is the perfect blend of culture, nature and community spirit.
HISTORY
Nashville, Tennessee, known as “Music City,” has a rich history that dates to its founding in 1779. Originally established as Fort Nashborough, it became a key trading post and was named the state capital in 1843. The city played a significant role in the Civil War, serving as a strategic military site. By the late 19th century, Nashville emerged as a cultural hub, particularly for music, with the establishment of the Grand Ole Opry in 1925, which solidified its reputation as the heart of country music. Today, Nashville is a vibrant city blending its historical roots with a thriving arts scene, diverse culinary offerings and a growing economy.
A genuine geographic bull’s-eye, Nashville is perfectly positioned to draw people together. Forty percent of the U.S. population lives within 600 miles of Nashville.
Nashville is one of only six cities in the nation where three interstates connect. Interstate 65 (I-65) connects the city with Louisville, Indianapolis and Chicago to the north and Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile to the south. Nashville is bisected by I-40, an east-west freeway that also passes through cities that include Asheville, Knoxville, Memphis, Little Rock and Oklahoma City. I-24 crosses the city from the northwest to the southeast, providing convenient travel from St. Louis, Chattanooga and Atlanta.
