New Initiative:

GIRLS ROCK RENO! Introducing Girls Rock Reno (or GRR!) – Holland’s first ever music summer camp for youth ages 9-17! We are so proud of the hard work and dedication of the GRR team, which brought together local musicians, artists, and community members to provide lessons in music, stage confidence, teamwork and so much more! Sixteen campers attended our inaugural GRR in 2019, forming four awesome bands including the Shehuahuas, Sci Fi, Blue Boots, and Sorry, I Forgot to Shave. Each band learned vocals, guitar, bass, and drums and at the end of camp, they all rocked an original song on stage to a packed house at Holland!! Their talent blew us away! GRR is all about self-confidence, creativity, and community — encouraging campers to acquire skills to help guide them throughout their lives. As we move forward, GRR hopes to counter the underrepresentation of women and people of marginalized gender identities in music, and is committed to creating a positive, inclusive environment. Our next summer camp is slated for June 2020 and we cannot wait! This year’s camp was made possible by our amazing volunteer musicians, instructors, and band managers with special thanks to our community partners including KWNK Community Radio, Laika Press, Button Pusher, the BLOOM crew, Death by Stereo Fest, Sizzle Pie, Tour Badgers, Custom Ink, Costco, and Blackbird.

2019 Reflections + Highlights Britt Curtis

As always, this year zoomed by fast as a flash, and it’s not till the new one hits that I have a chance to reflect on how much actually transpired in the last. 2019 was a year of growth - growing the team, growing new programs, taking on new partnerships, continuing to dial in and transform our space, building our membership program, and of course, staying busy as ever with a million events. It was also a year of intense conversation and debate - thinking about accessibility, sustainability, responsibility to our community and our world, our use of social media and the companies whose ethics no longer jibe with ours, and how to continue to move forward and make decisions that reflect our values and our mission and stand up for what’s right, or feels right, even when it’s hard (like working to get Holland off Facebook). While there’s so much to be proud of always, some highlights for me include the launch of Girls Rock Reno, some incredible and thought-provoking exhibitions in the Galleries, KWNK going 24 hours and seeing (and hearing it) come in to its own, the inaugural Tri-Lab, a super-fun color-themed Teen Art Night and otherworldly summer event - Someplace, Felicia Perez’s Still Here and that mariachi band that blew us all away, and so much good music all year long. I am excited to see some stuff we planted seeds for come to fruition in 2020 and for Holland to officially become a teen itself (!!!). And I as gear up to officially pass the torch in 2020, I feel so grateful for our team - the staff, the committees, the volunteers, our Board, our members - and our community, for caring for Holland so completely and infusing it with so much love and creativity and energy. I have no doubt Holland will continue to be a force this next year, and couldn’t be more thrilled to see this next crew make its mark.

Reflections Mitch Dufour, Board Chair

2019 was a good year where The Holland Project board gained some friends and worked together well. Our collaborative fundraiser with Reno Bike Project and Craft, Tri-Lab, was a big success. Annual programs such ALL IN, High Desert Art+Craft and 3 Minute Film Fest all had excellent turnouts too. I had some great times at concerts and saw some interesting exhibitions in the Holland galleries. Looking forward to 2020, I’m excited to build out an office space and seeing Holland continue to position itself as a sustainable and long lasting Reno treasure. The shows are already stacked and it’s only January!

Brigdon Markward

In a way, 2019 felt like a huge opportunity to be more creative in this role than I have in the past. With a new level of help from Alana, Ilya, and tons of volunteers in the busy seasons, the music department feels more streamlined and efficient. This opened up opportunity for me to be able to take more risks in booking; giving more enticing offers to artists I’ve been going after, giving more opportunities to young and newer projects, and giving other folks more free reign in putting together their own shows start to finish. I’m thankful to have been able to book some of my absolute favorite bands like Sheer Mag, Spirit of the beehive, Sales, and Ceremony. I feel very comfortable and confident in our department right now, and I’m excited for, and proud of, what we’ve been working on for 2020!

The transition into the new year has meant a lot of looking back at 2019 and the past decade and I almost cannot believe it’s 2020! I started volunteering in the galleries and going to shows at Holland about ten years ago now, and Holland has had a profound positive influence on my artistic and professional life. It was always at the center of my community. Today, I feel so proud (and so many emotions!) to be a part of the team seeing the organization into its next chapter. Each year, I learn so much from the staff, volunteers and my fellow community members while collaborating on initiatives that truly make Reno a more dynamic and inclusive place to live. 2019 brought so many special memories inlcuding tears (of joy!) at the Girls Rock Reno final showcase, sore feet from dancing all night at Sylvia Rivera Center’s first all ages Cumbia Night, finding glitter/packing peanuts in every corner after our otherworldly summer celebration spectacular, and so many more treasured moments with the artists and people of this community. Now, the gifts of 2020 await! I’m so looking forward to the future and continuing on in this adventure with our Holland friends and family.

2019 was the biggest year yet for the HP Galleries! We kicked off the year with a string of great teen exhibitions including the first ever Teen Open Studio exhibition as well as another excellent Scholastic Art exhibit. We also had the chance to partner with high schools including Wooster, McQueen, Damonte Ranch and I Can Do Anything. It’s always inspiring working with the younger generation of makers in our community and getting to see them grow as artists. Exhibitions like these always remind me why places like Holland are so important and essential to a growing, thriving, and sustaining arts community. We also had the great privilege of working with and exhibiting work by a whole slew of amazing and diverse out-oftown artists this year. Not only was it exciting having a chance to share their work with the arts community here in Reno (and sharing our community with them), but it was also great to make connections and build new relationships with artists and arts orgs/collectives outside of Reno. It was wonderful to finally be able to connect with Las Vegas artists this year and also having an opportunity to connect with Verge Center for the Arts and Sacramento. I am really excited to continue to grow these relationships and can’t wait to see what projects/partnerships come to play in the next year. 2019 also marked the end of an era with the closing of the Micro Gallery this fall (housed inside Bibo Coffee Co. on Record St) and a leap into the next era with the opening of two new off-site exhibition spaces -The Satellite Gallery located inside Cafe Capello and the Ferino Gallery at the Ferino Distillery. These new off-site spaces will allow us to continue the legacy of the Micro Gallery in providing opportunities for emerging and established local artists to exhibit their work in non-traditional gallery spaces. This was also a great year for new and old gallery fundraisers like ALL IN and Goth Bingo Night, and for art events like our big summer art party, Someplace, where Holland was completely transformed with fantastical art installations that took over every nook and cranny of the venue. I am always beyond grateful for all the amazing artists and volunteers who rally and make events like these happen.

Ilya Arbatman

2019 was a year of growth and achievement at Holland, and I feel particularly proud of my role in expanding community programming. Of course, 2019 saw plenty of awesome shows, but, as Holland always strives to evolve, I am most excited about my involvement in new, challenging projects. Watching young performers take the stage for the first time as part of the BLOOM Youth Open Mic series has been so rewarding - it was originally proposed to us by two young kids, 9 and 11 at the time, and so is an excellent example of Holland’s success as a by-youth-for-youth initiative. I’ve also been involved in putting on speaking events and open mics for ACTIONN, a local progressive non-profit that has been doing incredible grassroots work in the Reno homeless community. Bridging the gap between organizations like ACTIONN and Holland is a vital compxonent of maintaining the social relevance and impact of the arts, and I look forward to where that collaboration goes in the future. Working this past year with the Support Committee has made me feel like Holland is actually doing the work necessary to make our spaces safer, rather than just pronouncing them so. On the fun side, I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that a whole month of Pussycat NV was one of the best parts of the summer. Drinking coffee and chilling with cats in Serva Pool feels like a necessary annual activity - we’re hoping to make Pussycat NV a permanent fixture in Reno and we couldn’t have even dreamt of that if Holland had not hosted the first few pop-ups! Finally, I can say without reservation that one of the projects I am most proud of being involved in - ever - is Girls Rock Reno. We got such a fantastic team of people together this past summer, and, even though we were pretty much flying by the seat of our pants, we managed to pull off a truly incredible week-long summer rock camp. All the campers and everyone involved felt that we created something special that week, and the showcase was an hour and a half that I will remember fondly for the rest of my life. I can’t wait for camp this summer - we learned a lot last year and I feel very optimistic about the future.
