INITIATIVES Serva Pool Thanks to a generous contribution by the Draper Foundation, we were able to transform the annex space of our venue, which we call Serva Pool, into a multi-use area for gallery exhibitions, music shows, dance parties, community gatherings, workshops, and a variety of rentals. 2018 marks the completion of this rennovation project and Serva Pool is now able to hold a rotation of activities year round.

Teen Open Studio Since 2008, the Holland Project produced the annual Stranger Show with the Nevada Museum of Art, which gave high school students the opportunty to learn new fine art skills and collaborate with a local artist on an artwork for exhibition. After 10 years, we felt it was time to expand the purpose of Stranger Show into a longer term, more in-depth mentorship. That is when TEEN OPEN STUDIO (TOS) was born, a semester long, once-a-week meet-up for high school students looking to step up their art game. Every week, TOS students are introduced to a local artist and new art technique, and sometimes head out on field trips to art spaces throughout Reno such as Holland or the Black Rock Press. Each semester culminates in a final exhibition of their curatorial vision. Teen Open Studio is a partnership of the Holland Project and Nevada Museum of Art. membership We launched our new membership program which allows individual supporters to give as little or as much as they wish with one recurring monthly donation. These monthly donations illustrate the immense community support behind The Holland Project and, as we continue to grow, will make a huge difference in the overall sustainability of the organization. Most memberships costs between $5-20 per month and members enjoy perks such as access to exclusive, special events as well as discounts with our community business partners.
kwnk 97.7 Fm KWNK’s mission is to champion music and ideas through community-driven, noncommercial radio in Reno and beyond. Community Radio that is volunteer-based and listener-supported strengthens community ties and builds civic engagement. It’s a huge, longanticipated, much-needed and exciting project and Holland is one of the partners and biggest cheerleaders. Radio Drama Production workshop with KWNK
Zine Fest Members of our volunteer Gallery Committee organized Reno’s only art+book+zine fair in June 2018, which showcased nearly 20 vendors hawking their wares and emphemera plus live DJ’s and local food. Zine Fests are common throughout the US, primarily in big cities, and we are proud to be expanding this tradition to the Truckee Meadows and highlighting more exceptional independent publishers and artists in the years to come.

2018 felt like a huge year for music at Holland Project. We got some of our dream artists through, bands like Japanese Breakfast, SALES, and Soccer Mommy played sold out shows to hundreds of young people. We also accomplished one of our most ambitious summer events yet, Short Circuit; spanning across the city, and looping in tons of local and regional artists to make installations large and small, into a totally immersive event. We made it through one of our busiest and most well attended years yet, and I’m already excited about everything we have planned for 2019.

2018 was a big and fabulous year for Holland. We had lots of fun and pushed ourselves farther than we thought we could. We ended the year loud and fast and I’m excited for whats cookin’ in 2019, especially the Halloween show.

What a fun and wild ride 2018 was! I was thrown into the mix just before summer and was fortunate enough to jump right in on many community driven events, meet some radical visual artists and musicians, and even introduce a few projects of my own! For me, one of the best parts about being involved with Holland is seeing what we can accomplish when we all work together. Watching the collaborative efforts of our volunteers, artist friends, and partners unfold on events like Short Circuit, Zine Fest, 4x4x48 Music Video Challenge, workshops, among others was so special. I love the spirit of wanting to learn, work, and create together. I feel incredibly honored to return to my hometown and join this all-star team. I can’t wait for all the amazing moments and achievements we will see in the years to come.

Looking back on 2018, it feels like it was a super dense year - for me, it’s been really special taking a more active role booking and organizing shows and events. Some that stand out from last year are Wreckless Eric - whose energy and simple dedication after over 40 years of playing music are really inspirational - and the ACTIONN Housing Views Spoken Word Event - which was heavy but I think a really positive experience for everyone involved. It’s also been very rewarding to be involved in running sound trainings and making live sound accessible to anyone that wants to give it a shot. On a personal level, I’m proud of the work we did for the Okay Urge record release, which was a rad interdisciplinary music/dance event/installation, and of the live score of Fantastic Planet during the summer event. I had never tried my hand and that kind of composing - it was really exciting to coordinate and pull off a one-time performance like that. Finally, it goes without saying that being involved in PussycatNV was so fun and rewarding, and I can’t wait to do it again this summer.

2018 was a whirlwind year full of wonderful new connections! I am always excited about exhibitions like Scholastic and Young Blood that give us an opportunity to meet and work with young artists from our community and this year was especially exciting with the launch of the brand new Teen Open Studio program in partnership with the Nevada Museum of Art. We also had some fun and amazing space transforming exhibitions that brought out new groups of people from the community, including Silver Ball which turned the main gallery into a vintage pinball arcade, and the Pussycat NV lounge and cat exhibit in our Serva Pool space with the most adorable kitties from the Nevada Humane Society. I was also beyond excited and honored to exhibit work by a slew of incredible women from near and far, including photographer June Canedo (NYC), illustrator Esther Samuel-Davis (Berlin), paper artist Lea Zalinskis (Oakland), video and new media artists Devra Freelander (Brooklyn), Jessica Gatlin (Nashville) and Cassie McQuarter (LA), and photographer/musician Lauren Rodriguez (Seattle).

I believe that 2018 was a big stride forward for the workshops department. We were able to cover a broad range of topics, from sound engineering, to pickling, woodwork, radio drama production, zine making, wellness, and more from an even broader variety of local experts. Some of our most successful workshops involved partnering with other local businesses and organizations like Pantry Products and Laika Press to share their expertise and mutually support the do-it-yourself community in Reno. But for me, the absolute highlight of 2018 was being able to provide a space for a young woman (and former volunteer in Holland’s early days) the space to teach reoccurring Self-Love workshops based on the knowledge she has obtained while pursuing a PhD in behavioral psychology. Each time we have offered this workshop, the number of participants has grown and I have watched her confidence grow with it. Looking forward to continuing to create and grow in 2019.
britt curtis 2018 was another banner year for Holland, and though it flew by at lightning speed, I’m endlessly proud looking back at more than 280 programs, events, exhibitions and workshops that took place. Thanks in part to generous funding from the Draper Family Foundation, I was thrilled to transform our Serva Pool garage space to a multi-use space that is usable all year long and to provide even more space for art, culture, and gathering. I was happy to see the continuation of important longstanding programs and partnerships like Teen Art Night, Scholastic, 3-Minute Film and Rogue Art+Craft, and to see the launch of new ones like Teen Open Studios, Zine Fest, Lit Crawl, Meshes, and Holland’s Membership Program. I saw great growth in our Workshop program and know 2019 will see even more opportunity for handson skill building and professional development. Mostly, I’m exceedingly grateful for and so impressed with our staff, members, volunteers, artists, musicians, and makers who give so much and are tireless in their dedication to Holland, to community, and to all-ages art and culture.
