Dear fellow members, Whilst still in the euphoria of the great results of the Dutch team at the football World Cup in Brazil, the Netherlands and the rest of the world were shocked by the tragedy of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, above the Ukraine. Fortunately, no members of the Hollandse Club were on board, however, many of us knew passengers or families of passengers on board and, therefore, our Club was also in mourning due to this tragedy. However, in sad times like these, it is heart-warming to see how close the expat community in Singapore and at the Hollandse Club is. I also would like to take this opportunity to pass my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all passengers. With the summer holidays almost coming to an end, August is traditionally the month we welcome a lot of new families to the Club and Singapore and, of course, we hope to meet a lot of new members at the Club. Soon the Main Committee and daily management will organise a welcoming event for all these new members. We hope that these new members will enjoy our Club as much as we do. The Club is a great place for the whole family, with a lot of great facilities and events, which you all will love soon. In the coming months, again, there will be a lot of fun activities organised at the Club. The one event I am really looking forward to is the typical Singaporean dragon boat race for teams made up of Club members, at the end of September. If you did not enter the race with a team yet, we encourage you to do so, as you can race the Main Committee who will also join with one boat. I am sure it will be a great day of good sports and fun, and there will be entertainment for all ages. You can find more information about this dragon boat race in this magazine. Whilst writing this message, I am still in the Netherlands, but soon will return to Singapore and I do hope to welcome you all back at the Club for another great year of fun, pleasure, sports and activities. If you have any ideas or remarks, please do not hesitate to contact our General Manager or myself. Warm regards, Nienke Nauta-Kuipers

Dearest Members, The summer of 2014 will unfortunately be remembered for the tragedy on flight MH17, on which many of us had family, friends or relatives. On behalf of the entire Hollandse Club team and my family, once again, we offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims and their loved ones. It was heartwarming to see how we, as a Dutch community and nation, have worked together both here in Singapore and in the Netherlands to offer help, a listening ear and comfort for those who need it. A warm welcome back to all members that have been on holidays, either in the Netherlands or elsewhere enjoying your well deserved break. It is great to hear from you and to see you back at your Hollandse Club; we have a lot of exciting plans for you in the upcoming months, so stay tuned. Upgrading the Facilities Firstly, we have kept ourselves busy over the summer months and have upgraded facilities. The walls of our squash courts are renovated and the wooden floors are sanded. The indoor and outdoor lounge received a new wooden floor. The outdoor lounge, the swimming pool lounge area and the junior room received a fresh layer of paint. New cushion covers were ordered for the swimming pool lounge and extra cushion covers for the terrace chairs. Finally, after three attempts, the diving board has a proper new anti-slip surface again. Furthermore, a start has been made with the re-decoration of the CHILL-OUT Room 2.0. With the help of the teenage committee and the teenagers, the CHILL-OUT Room should be ready by Friday 12 September, the day of the official Opening Party. All teenagers (11 years and above) are welcome at the Opening Party. Upcoming Events September and October are promising to be great months with lots of events for everyone. On 19 September, we are opening our doors for the September Fair. With over 50 vendors, it is a sell-out event occupying the Main Hall, Tradewinds Bar, indoor lounge and even the outdoor lounge. Start preparing your teams for the popular quiz night in October. Furthermore, we will be organising a 5-a-side football tournament on the multi-purpose court. Questions: Do you enjoy your Club? Are you happy with the facilities your Club has to offer? Are your kids enjoying our sports classes? If so, tell your friends, colleagues, family and others to join you as a happy member of the best International Family Club in Singapore. Our Open House on Saturday 13 September is the perfect opportunity to join. At the same time, if you are not so happy about our facilities or our service, please let me know or email gm@ hollandseclub.org.sg On behalf of the Hollandse Club team,

EVENT REPORT

WORLD CUP 2014 at the Hollandse Club...

8 HOLLANDSE CLUB | WWW.WNDSECLUB.ORG.SG

EVENT REPORT

By Anne Zwart Summer is almost over and the World Cup football is already becoming a vague memory. What remains is the lack of sleep from which I – after more than a month – have not yet recovered. Fortunately, I can look back and say that the nightly awakenings have produced a lot of really nice moments. And therefore – mainly to support everyone who is still struggling with dark circles and saggy bags under their eyes or those who are still frustrated after losing – here are some highlights and beautiful moments to retrieve. First of all, it’s fantastic to have to set your alarm clock in the middle of the night, to jump on your bike – yes, that’s what Dutchies do – to ride to the Hollandse Club at 3am and to suddenly be squashed by a crowd of Singaporeans, British, Belgians, Aussies, Iranians, French (etc!) and, of course, Dutch, all dressed up in fierce orange. Not only members but also football fans from outside the Hollandse Club and the Singaporean press were present to cheer to great goals of Robben and Van Persie. Actually, the atmosphere was great during all the matches and especially the Red Devils and the Socceroos were popular with the Orange legion and could count on considerable support. Although, to be honest, I was supporting them from my bedroom with my iPad on my bed with David Beckham watching from his spot on my bedroom wall. It was amazing to witness how relatively unknown players suddenly became folk heroes; how Arjen Robben – wearing a notso-charming sleeveless top – admitted diving, how Ghanaians

... and the other side of the globe!

flew in money (cash!) subsequently to give it away in the favelas, how the Belgians qualified for the quarter-finals with a hardfought victory over the United States, how Robin Van Persie became so eager that he was caught offside at least five times per match, how Luis Suarez took a bite of Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder, how James Rodriguez scored the most beautiful goal of all against Uruguay, how the German Mannschaft became stronger and stronger, how a frustrated Colombian hospitalised Brazil’s top-scorer Neymar, how goalkeeper Tim Krul intimidated – and stopped – two Costa Rican penalties, how Arjen Robben - still in the same sleeveless top – became increasingly emotional during his comments on Dutch television, and how Lionel Messi, again, could not live up to the expectations but still managed to walk away with the Golden Ball. In short, it was an exciting summer of football, where new players superseded old players, Spain relinquished the title to Germany, James Rodriguez became the new Christiano Ronaldo, Guus Hiddink succeeded Louis van Gaal, Daley Blind replaced David Beckham (on my wall) and only Sepp Blatter remains. To return to the facts and results: in the end, the Dutch team lost the semi-final to Argentina in a thrilling penalty shoot - with Jasper Cillissen in goal. Eventually, “we” came third with a 3-0 victory over hosts, Brazil. The strong German Mannschaft beat Argentina in the final with a goal in the 113th minute. We congratulate the Germans with their deserved World Championship... I hope we meet them in four years!

By Sam Chaplin (age 10) I love the World Cup because there are so many different countries to watch and players, too. This World Cup was a great experience because of the atmosphere while watching it in Singapore (at the Club obviously), France and England. The first game I watched was at the Hollandse Club. It was the England vs Italy match. It was Father’s Day and I had to drag my dad out of bed at five in the morning to go see the game, forcing him to wear England colours (he’s from NZ and prefers rugby!) On our holiday in France, we tried to get some dinner and watch the France vs Germany game in a restaurant but none of the restaurants would serve food until the game was over! We were really hungry and, after walking around for an hour, we found a kebab place, ordered some kebabs and chips and sat down by the television back at the apartment and watched the game. I think watching the World Cup in England was the best because the time difference meant that we could watch the rest of the games in the early evening including the Final when Germany won. The World Cup was the best and I can’t wait to watch it again in four years time. 2018 World Cup here we come!

DEEPAVALI Deepavali, also known as the “festival of lights, is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five day period. Before Deepavali night, people clean, renovate and decorate their homes. On Deepavali night, Hindus dress up in new clothes or their best outfit, light up lamps and candles inside and outside their home, participate in family prayers, typically to Lakshmi - the goddess of wealth and prosperity. After prayers, fireworks follow, then a family feast including sweets, and an exchange of gifts between family members and close friends. Deepavali also marks a major shopping period in nations where it is celebrated. Deepavali is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore and Fiji.

During Deepavali, the streets of Little India are artfully decorated and lit up in bright festive colours, transforming it with an explosion of vibrant, colourful arches and lights. Festive bazaars and numerous cultural activities such as the Indian Heritage and Craft Exhibition, Street Parade, Countdown Concert are also held. The festive stalls are decorated with wares such as fragrant flowers, garlands used during prayers, traditional oil lamps and beautiful Saris with intricate brocade patterns and glittering gems. Colourful Indian outfits, intricate costume jewellery and traditional arts and craft are also on sale. Indian delicacies can also be found in abundance during this period. If you want to bask in the richness of the Indian culture, sit by any of the coffee shops along Little India and order a teh tarik (frothy milk tea). Watch as the crowds fill the streets and the stalls bustle with business. Come see this historically rich enclave transform into the heart of Deepavali on 23rd October 2014.

STAFF NEWS 45 Years of Service Award On Thursday 26 June 2014, the President and the Vice President joined the management and staff of the Hollandse Club for an appreciation lunch in the indoor lounge. Mr Boon and Mr Edmund, both from the Banqueting Department, reached 45 years of service with the Hollandse Club. This unusual occurrence was celebrated with speeches from the General Manager and the President. While enjoying a lunch buffet, the stories about monthly salaries of $225 in the year 1969 came to the table. How unique and special it is to have two employees with 45 years of service! We are proud to have Mr Boon and Mr Edmund as our colleagues.

NEW ARTWORK IN THE TRADEWINDS BAR! Irene Hoff is Dutch and currently living in Bali, Indonesia, after having lived and worked across South East Asia over the past few years. These diverse cultures have influenced her artistic style and theme. She began her creative career as a graphic and product designer, and later decided to focus her energy on the creation of art. Her work is lauded regionally, and has been presented in various solo exhibitions throughout Indonesia, Vietnam and Holland. She has also exhibited at the AAF (Affordable Art Fair) here in Singapore and will exhibit at the AAF in Hong Kong next year. Irene’s art has an instant impact. The unique blends of modern and traditional culture take art lovers into a mystical world that often only exists in their imagination. There is a wealth of intricate detail in each picture that requires in-depth study and often Irene will incorporate a clever surprise or angle that leaves the viewer with a feeling of wonder, mystery, laughter, excitement, and longing to see more. It

pulls you into a place you love to stay, a break out of the ordinary. Moreover, she challenges you to believe in your imaginary world and make it your own. Vivid colours and a unique compilation of styles and visual elements, such as pictures, cartoons, symbols, signs and words are often the basis for Irene’s authentic collage-pop-art-kind-of-style. All the paintings are hand painted, using mixed media of acrylics, oil paints and paper prints. She loves to work with stencils, spray paint, pencils and texture. The Singapore-themed collection ranges from SGD 1200 to SGD 1500. Paintings are all unique, hand painted, mixed media on canvas. If you see a piece you would love to purchase please contact Irene’s representative, Suzie Hosking, via e-mail hosking.suzie@gmail.com or phone 9026 1873. www.irenehoff.com

MEETING THE NETHERLANDS CHARITY ASSOCIATION By Pleun Brevet A lot of people have heard about the NCA but who is behind it and what are they aiming for? We interviewed Ineke van Praag (President) to find out. We meet at the Hollandse Club and, after ordering coffee, Ineke introduces me to what NCA is and what they do. “NCA stands for Netherlands Charity Association, and it was started in 1968 by a few Dutch ladies who wanted to give something back to Singaporean society. Since then we have come a

long way, and over the years the NCA has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to various charities.” Currently NCA supports victims of abuse, poverty and human trafficking. “All through local charities run by Singaporeans. Over the years, we have built up a strong relationship with the charities we support. We know what they are doing and what they need.” To my question why there should be a Dutch association in Singapore to donate money to, Ineke explains:

For local charities, it is hard to reach out to the expat community as we are always coming and going. Being expats, we know that there are a lot of us who want to help. And Singapore does offer certain facilities and benefits, but we don’t know the rules. So, how do you know whether a cause is legitimate or not?

Ineke expects an answer from me and I don’t have one, except the obvious: doing your homework. “That’s right, and this is basically what we do: we visit the charities, we check their finances and references. We have rules when it comes to donating. For instance, we don’t donate if the charity already receives large government funding. Once we decide to support a cause, we stay in touch regularly.” So NCA is the bridge between the local charities and the expat community? “Exactly; even though the board members may vary, the NCA as an organisation stays the same. This makes it easier for both the expat community to donate, and for the charities to maintain the relationship.”

NCA raises money in a lot of different ways: through memberships, events, workshops and sales of products that are designed especially for NCA. “Right now we are working on organising two big events: the first ever NCA Bike-Quest in September and our own fair: the NCA Charity Christmas Fair, a yearly event that we hold right here at the Club.” When I comment that this seems like a lot for a small organisation, Ineke smiles: “Thankfully, we can rely on loyal volunteers among our members; without them NCA would not be possible. But, as expat life dictates, they come and, unfortunately, they go. We are always looking for new members and volunteers; everyone has a skill we can put to good use.” For more information, visit the website www.nca.org.sg. You can also meet the NCA at the Hollandse Club September Fair (September 19).

GLAMPING IN THE AUSTRALIAN KIMBERLEY’S By Wietske Helle While most expats are off to go ‘home’ each summer, we tend to enjoy winter holidays in Europe and the summers in Asia. Not the least bit triggered by the fact that I don’t consider 3-4 weeks alone with three kids moving between hotel, rental and/or family, a holiday. So instead we flew to Broome (2200 km north of Perth), drove 3122 km in a 4WD on dirt roads and ‘glamped’ in the Australian bush. I can recommend this summer holiday to everyone, keeping in mind that: a) our children are not prone to carsickness, b) except for our honeymoon, we’ve never spent so much on a holiday, c) we did without swimming pools, unless you count the gorge pools of 15 degrees Celsius, d) we

had red dirt in every pore of our body, leaving the bath water and washing red for weeks, and e) there was no Wifi or even GSM connection for almost our entire trip. I can imagine you are still doubtful as to why this would be a nice holiday, but this was all well compensated. We saw incredible scenery, starlight skies, swam in waterfalls, enjoyed outdoor life with early wake up calls from the birds, warm sunny days, campfires at night and we overcame new boundaries like dealing with long hikes, insects, fear of heights, crocodiles, flat tyres and bushfires, and had to make do without toys, except for sticks and stones, rainbow looms, sketch books and card games. We became Uno addicts. In short, the trip covered Broome as a base, where we rented a car, stocked up and enjoyed the sunsets and camel rides on Cable Beach. The following two weeks, we travelled on the Gibb River Road, the Bungle Bungles and Cape Leveque, all equally beautiful in their own way. We were driving for 5-8 hours, arriving at a pre-setup tent, enjoying a ‘home - but not by us - cooked’ dinner followed by a day or two of rest, i.e. a day of hiking and swimming (if you dare) in the gorges. The highlights of our trip were a 4 hour hike to Mitchell Falls (very remote), swimming in the falls followed by a six minute helicopter flight back to camp, the scenery of the Bungle Bungles and the 4WD tracks for experienced 4WD drivers only, which of course we assume ourselves to be, not...or rather, now! Other good things to know: there were neither flies nor mosquitos! We did however see a big hairy spider, a very venomous snake, wallabies, many different cockatoos and birds of prey, horses, cattle and whales! If you like, you can contact me for an example itinerary; you need a big budget and at least two weeks. Less, if you plan to take it slower and set up your own tent and cook your own dinner. SUMMER? “Surfcamp Bloemendaal aan Zee, the Netherlands” By Tom Kuipers (age 10) In July, we went to a surf camp in Bloemendaal. We have a summerhouse in Bloemendaal and Bloemendaal is next to the beach in the Netherlands. We went there together, my sister and I. On Monday morning, we woke up and put on our swimming clothes. Then we had our breakfast. When we finished our breakfast we went in the car and went to the “Rapa Nui” beach club. At the beach club, the instructors were explaining the program of the week to us. And after all that, we needed to put on our wetsuits as the sea in Holland is very cold, not like the sea at Sentosa. We then started with the warm-up. After the warm-up, the surf instructor said we were only allowed to lie down on our surf boards, as there were big waves that day. After 2 hours of surfing, we went to the campsite next to the beach and had our lunch and played some games. On Tuesday the weather was nice and we went to the Rapa Nui beach club again and the surf instructors were waiting for us. When everyone was there, we put on our wetsuits and then we went surfing again and after the surfing we ate a cookie. After that, we went to the campsite and we had lunch. After lunch we played a game. On Wednesday, we surfed in the morning again and in the afternoon we were body boarding and swimming. On Thursday, we did team management and discussed our team name and team outfit and yell for the Friday competition. On Thursday, we went to the campsite again for lunch. Friday was the big day. We had a competition, a catwalk and a race. We stayed at the beach for lunch and played some games. When the competition was finished, our parents came and we got our certificates. It was a really fun week and I enjoyed it. I learned all about weather and waves and how to surf. Next year I will go again.

By Cato Kuipers (age 8) I’m Cato and I’m 8 years old. This holiday, we went on a surf camp in Bloemendaal. At surf camp on Monday, we were split into three teams: Team Green, Team Orange and Team Blue. For lunch, we had some Dutch sandwiches and on Tuesday we played the little tea bag exchanging play. On Wednesday, we surfed again and there were many jellyfish in the little sea at low tide. Then we changed and then we needed to pick three items to do a game to get some lemonade and a cookie. And if you had 10 items you could have two cookies. On Thursday again in the morning we did some surfing. I really liked to surf on the waves. I was the only girl in my group. Today we had a picnic after the surfing at the beach. In the afternoon, we played beach games and at the end of the day we had dinner on the beach with mommy and oma. Friday was a special day as it was our last of the surf camp. We had a competition. There were four competitions: the best team song, the best outfits, the fastest race and the quiz. All the parents were watching us. At the end of the day we had an award ceremony and prize giving. We got our certificate. I really liked the whole week. I made lots of friends and next year I will go again. I really liked the surfing.

“My amazing holiday in England” By Alex Nicholson (age 9 and a half) On my summer holiday we wanted to go back to England and see our family. On the day we left, we went to Singapore Changi Airport. On the plane 30 minutes before landing, we got struck by lightning. It was the best seeing it from the window seat! After we had landed and got all our bags [which took a while!], we got our rental car, which was a 7 seater Vauxhall. Then we took a long hour and a half drive to our Nanny’s and Grandad’s house. Once we got there we had a lovely breakfast and had a look at all the sports news. After resting for 2 days, my Mum and Dad went to London for 2 days and 1 night. When I was with my Nanny and Grandad, Grandad had to go to hospital for an x-ray while Nanny, Annabel and I went to Marsh Farm. At Marsh Farm we went in the play center, rode a pony called Max, fed the animals and groomed Max as well! When we got back to Nanny’s house we were so tired of the fun we went to sleep really fast! In the morning we went to see my smallest cousin Lily. She was so excited to see us. We had a great time! The next day we went to see our other Nanny and Grandad, and they took us to a castle that has been knocked down. It was really COOL!!!!! Then we saw the rest of our family and went in to Teddington to see our new house and our friends, Thomas, William, Lucy, Carman and Lewis. We had a sleepover with Thomas, William and Lucy. The last bit we did in England was staying in a hotel for my Nanny’s 70th birthday!! We saw all of our family there. It was a brilliant night out. I loved it when I took my cousin Adam’s DS and he took my ipad and my cousin Sam took my ipad too. That is what we did before bed. After we said bye to everyone we went to the airport. I can’t wait until Christmas. When we got back to Singapore I could not wait to see my best friend, Sam Chaplin.

“My holiday in Batu Batu” By Annabel Nicholson (age 7) From Singapore we took the car to a boat station and parked the car. We got out our luggage and with our luggage we crossed the street to the boat station. We sat down for 1 minute then we got on the boat to Batu–Batu! After we arrived in the hotel room, my brother Alex and I went on the beach and in the sea. Once we got dried off and had lunch, and after our food digested, we went snorkeling. Then we got ready for dinner. After dinner we went straight to sleep. In the morning we had breakfast. It was very nice! After breakfast, we went on a long hike around the big island. After we went paddle boarding and kayaking, we got ready to go back home to Singapore.

AQUA SPIN WHAT? One of Europe’s hottest fitness crazes takes traditional spinning underwater for a low-impact, high-resistance workout that burns up to 800 calories an hour. It also boosts blood circulation, improves cardio fitness and builds muscular strength.

THE BENEFITS “Your weight is
supported by the buoyancy so there
is zero strain on the joints,” says Aqua Spin instructor Yannick Dedigama. “Spinning underwater also generates a massaging effect that reduces cellulite, water retention and best of all, reduces muscle ache.” Aqua Spin uses the benefits of water buoyancy and resistance, this makes the exercise motions and sequences especially gentle. This process makes for a great vigorous work out suitable for everyone! In addition to all this, Aqua Spin is an exercise technique, which gives you a full body workout using cycling movements to strengthen your legs, as well as arm movements to strengthen and tone your arms. SQUASH By Paul Roberts Since our last outing, the squash section has had a busy time with two internal competitions and the World Championship in Hong Kong. We held a handicap competition, which was spread out over a couple of months and by and large we seem to have got everyone’s handicap about right. The best upset of the tournament was the quick-fire Kiwi losing in straight sets to Righteous Remy, who is ranked some six points below him in the Cosmo ranking system. Other power players fell by the wayside, including both James and Fred but in the end, the final matched Daniel against Colin B. Colin is a wiley old thing and apparently moves a lot but doesn’t run much (I know, some mystical Chinese words of wisdom that floating butterfly Bullock came up with last weekend). Now this mystical power enables Colin to be where the ball is going to be before the ball is even there. A true gift and perhaps something of the mutant in him. Anyway, suffice to say that the final was a bit of a damp squid, with Colin winning with relative ease. I think it’s perhaps fair to say that the handicap system definitely worked in the big man’s favour, in this instance. Next on to the internal competition, which involved most of members and was held over a weekend; it culminated in Daniel Gelinas playing James Spalding in the main draw final. What should have been an evenly balanced match, in the end turned out to be rather one-sided, with Daniel taking the bragging rights and being crowned our 2014 champion. In the Plate Final, Robson Yeoh took on Colin Bullock in our very own rendition of the Little and Large Show. A grand event with Robson eventually winning through. Finally, in the Shield Final, Manoj Bhojwani took on a fairly new recruit in Chris Leung in a battle of power versus the sneaky, back of the court boast. Now in my view, such a shot should be limited to only six per match but dear Manoj uses it with aplomb and in this instance ended up a worthy winner. Finally, on to the Squash World Masters Championships that were held in Hong Kong in July; Fred Saarloos, Daniel Gelinas, Colin Robertson and Ross Stokes ably represented us. There were some 750 participants set across 10 age divisions from 35 to 80 years and hailing from over 40 countries around the world.

Our fearless four put on an excellent showing and did our dear Club proud. The baby of the bunch, Daniel, had a week of ups and downs but ended up as a losing semi-finalist in the consolation plate (one up from the wooden spoon event, I think). Fred used all his running skills to reach the semi-final of his age group’s plate semi-final – even if he had to lie and tell them that he was over 60 in order to do it. Colin managed to get to the special plate semi-final and Ross, using all that experience he had gained from winning that Whanganui tiddly winks championship in 1975 and managed to battle his way to the Consolation Plate Final. Bravo to each of our players who did a fantastic job and ensured that the Hollandse Club is a force to be reckoned with (in the plate division!) Aside from the above, our two courts have been transformed from the worn-out, potholed, mouldy, hornet invested saunas to two pristine, smooth, painted saunas that are a joy to play. The squash committee would like to express their thanks to the Club for putting the funds together to ensure that squash remains an integral part of the Club’s facilities, and indeed facilities to be proud of. So where to from here? Well, by the time this report comes out, we would have had our annual battle of the Orange Bowl with our friends at the Cricket Club, and after relinquishing it last year, we are determined to bring it back. We then have the Cosmo Leagues starting with Captain James leading us to what we hope is another Cosmo championship title. The box games continue and we will look forward to adding more competitions for the coming months. Please come down to our wonderful new courts on a Saturday afternoon from 2pm to see what you have been missing.
