Mindful Materialism

Mindful Materialism explores the way individuals are turning against the throwaway consumer society and beginning to mindfully consider their purchases, only buying things that they love and intend to keep for a long time , thus “treasuring possessions the traditional way (Blagburn, 2017). A new wave of minimalism has arisen from this trend, with new minimalists demanding longevity, meaning and quality in the things they buy. This can be seen on minimalist bloggers posting about shopping with intention and consideration (David, 2017; Davies, 2017; Russell, 2017; Thoreau, 2017). Appreciating the design, utility and beauty of everything we see whether it is nature, food, interiors or clothing – is an important aspect of Mindful Materialism. This appreciation enables us to truly cherish our own belongings and unlock a new element of mindfulness.

Finery and Mindful Materialism

Mindful Materialism is already present in the way Finery put together their collections: Whilst some of Finery’s clothes are trend-led, many are classic and timeless silhouettes. Finery’s designers “focus on making beautiful but affordable clothes that won’t date after just one season” (Steven, 2016). Finery’s designers aim to bring back the “love for clothes” (Farrow, cited in Leaper, 2015) - this love keeps clothing in women’s wardrobes for longer as they are cherished and better cared for. Finery’s collections of ‘Forever Pieces’ are garments designed to look and feel good forever. Their celebrity ambassadors, including Vicky McClure, Alice Levine and Melissa Helmsley, refer to various ‘Forever Pieces’ as having “design details [which] feel modern but they also won’t date” (McClure, cited in Parker, 2018) and “the staple you love” (Helmsley cited in Parker, 2018).

Brand Identity

Our collections are designed and made with love, and we think that shows in the clothes.” Finery London (no date)

Trend Concept:

The Ultimate Capsule Wardrobe

The aim of Project 333 is to have a 3-month capsule wardrobe of only 33 items (Carver, 2010). The concept of Project 333 is primarily for those who want to start leading a more minimalist lifestyle. Whilst Finery already has some timeless and versatile pieces that would fit into a minimalist wardrobe, the Ultimate Capsule Wardrobe collection is made up of pieces that can be thrown together seamlessly into interchangeable outfits that can be worn for years to come. As the garments in the collection are intended to last for a long time, it is important that they are not too trend-led. Therefore, silhouettes, colours and fabrics which consistently return in Spring Summer catwalks and trend reports will be used.

Colours, Fabrics and Silhouettes

The colours in the Ultimate Capsule Wardrobe were chosen by analysing key colour reports on WGSN for each S/S season between 2016 and 2019, selecting colours which return year after year. This ensures that the items in the collection will maintain their style credentials in future seasons. The compositions of fabrics used in the collection are suitable for British spring / summer weather, and are similar to those in Finery’s S/S 18 collection. Most of the silhouettes in the collection are classic shapes that are considered stylish for Spring Summer, with floaty romantic pieces such as blouses and a wrap dress; boxy styles such as the classic blazer and denim midi-skirt, and slim fit styles such as slip dress and classic tshirt. The silhouettes for tops and bottoms are designed to mix and match in different outfit combinations. Seasonless collections are rising in popularity (Banham, 2016; Conti, 2018; Gordon-Smith, 2018). Some of the colours, silhouettes and fabrics in the collection are trans-seasonal or ‘seasonless’. This allows for the garments to be worn in the A/W season too, ensuring the collection has ultimate wearability and will “carry your wardrobe allyear-round” (Gordon-Smith, 2018).

Retailing and Marketing

As Finery’s main retailing channel is online, the promotion of the Ultimate Capsule Wardrobe collection will be done through social media, using their Facebook banner to announce the new concept and Instagram to show items from the collection and ways to style it. Finery’s existing customers will be sent a catalogue through the post with a lookbook showing every piece from the collection. Department store, John Lewis is Finery’s main brick-and-mortar retailing location, with concessions in many of their stores. In these stores, advertising boards in the store entrance will promote the collection. In the concession, the Ultimate Capsule Wardrobe collection will be displayed in order of potential outfit combinations, chosen by the visual merchandisers as they see fit. It is important that no two same items should be placed next to each other e.g. the lilac blazer and khaki blazer should not be together, as they do not make up an outfit.
