ELECTRONIC WORKFLOW PRESERVES ANCIENT TEXTS The history of humanity has been interpreted, misrepresented and translated through various forms of literature. Unfortunately, many dissertations detailing the culture of a certain society during a particular period in time have been effaced, sometimes deliberately. However, most of the time, these historicallyrich documents simply fall victim to physical decay. Now, historians have found a new way to preserve culturally-insightful chronicles, using a document management software. In an interview with WAMC, Dr. Marie-Claire Beaulieu, an assistant professor in the Department of Classics at Tufts University, stated that such paperless system provides extraordinary access to ancient documents, because it removes some of the physical and social limitations of accessing them. One of the key benefits she outlined was the ability to actively engage the texts. Students and professors don't have to travel long distances to access specific information about different cultures. Forums and blogs are set up in conjunction with the paperless document management system so that colleagues can participate in active discussions. Even ancient texts written in languages foreign to one person can be translated by another. "Large scale digitization projects in recent years have provided a store of materials that is too vast for comparatively small number of scholars to tackle on their own," noted the professor. "Thousands upon thousands of texts, manuscripts, inscriptions and papyri are now online under open access licenses, just waiting to be edited, translated, annotated, and enjoyed by all." The virtual presence of these documents has contributed to the vat of knowledge hosted by the Internet.
