Paper clips in a paperless office

PAPER CLIPS IN A PAPERLESS OFFICE Whether businesses are working to create a paperless office out of a desire to improve the environment or lower costs, such revolutions often come with far-reaching consequences that can't always be predicted. When workplace norms are changed, daily operations might need to be adjusted to compensate for disrupted habits and trends. If organizations implement document management software or invoice automation, the amount of paper a company uses and stores will significantly decline. As these materials dwindle, so may some other traditional office tools and accessories exit the scene. A decrease in papers is almost a sure indicator of a reduction in the amount of paper clips a business will need. The costs of losing an office staple Many groups already understand the financial advantages that come with a paperless organization. Along with an increase in free space, companies could also benefit from more reliable security measures. However what about the devices that once secured papers together? When their sheets are taken right from under them, will boxes of these folded wires still stock the supply closets in offices around the world? With their sole purpose gone, can businesses continue to justify these expenses and would they even make a substantial difference in the budget? Around 20 billion paper clips are sold every year, according to a post on Business 2 Community by Samantha Briar. While the costs may seem miniscule, they do add up over time like everything else. Organizations that look at the financial possibilities of eliminating paper should also revise their spending on other tools that generally accompany it, such as staples and folders. This can help groups develop a more precise analysis of a paperless solution's monetary impact.

The paper clip legacy Although this once permanent fixture may disappear like phone books and cassettes before it, paper clips have left their mark on office culture. Their design still persists in the symbol and buttons for attachments on computers, smartphones and tablets in many paperless offices. All of the digital documents emailed around will sometimes require their own use of a virtual paperclip for files secured to messages racing through cyberspace. Like the reality paper may have to one day face, paper clips too will quietly fade out of existence as more practical and modern alternatives emerge. Microsoft Office once used the accessories image for it's assistant until 2007, reported The BBC. Clippy may have already had its time, but paper clips still have a little more. _________________________________ Ready to kick your paper habit? Register for an upcoming webcast!
