Connecting Knowing Loving Growing

Experience

J U L Y 20 13

I’m taking two vacations with the family this summer. One will be a trip to the beach the first week of July. The other is a trip to Yellowstone National Park the first week of September. I’ve been planning the Yellowstone trip for two years, and I’m really excited. To me, it is a “thin place.” Last year we mentioned “thin places” a couple of times in sermons. A “thin place” is a place where it seems like heaven and earth are really close together. It is the kind of place where it is a little bit easier to notice the works of God. The term was first used to describe the community on the island of Iona in Scotland. The Grand Canyon might be another place. One of those places where you marvel at God’s handiwork. For some people it is the beach. For others it is the mountains. Where are the thin places in your life? If you are traveling this summer, I hope you will take time to notice the different landscapes that you’ll be visiting. But I also hope you notice the different people. As a pastor, I sometimes catch myself wondering what a person’s needs are, or quickly noticing a person’s gifts that might be used well in a ministry setting. Could God be moving among us even when we aren’t at home? Even when we encounter strangers? Or, what about within our own families while we gather together in a beach house for the week? Could Durham be a “thin place”? If we looked at life through a different lens, is it possible that we might see God’s handiwork right in front of us? Yes, certainly when we go to beautiful places like the Eno River or Kerr Lake, but what about in our own backyard or our own church sanctuary? Jesus said that wherever two or more are gathered in His name that He will be among them. Could the Spirit possibly be moving among us in our conversations with others this summer? Let’s pray together that we will be open to the Spirit’s leading and nudging when we encounter family, friends, acquaintances, or even strangers. Perhaps we will find that God is working right before our very eyes.

May the peace of Christ be with you, Pastor Doug

FROM LORI FISHER

Lori Fisher has been with Aldersgate for over 20 years! She has seen many children grow up into outstanding adults! She has found her work at Aldergate UMC to be very rewarding and we will miss her very, very much. To: Everyone at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Each Sunday for many years I have been working at this church. I have seen countless young children grow into fine young women and men. I have seen several leadership changes within the church. I have seen a lot. I can recall when the Family Life Center was nothing more than trees and dirt! Then once it began to be built, it seemed like it all went so fast. To know that there was dirt there...and now there is a beautiful building. This building is for the growth of all, here at Aldersgate. I can see each and every Sunday how much the children that I kept, at one time, have molded themselves into fine young Christian women and men. I look forward to seeing what they hold in store for us! I have always felt much love from the church. So I intend to visit often! I just want to say thank you to everyone with whom I have come in contact while working at the church. It has been a wonderful experience. Lori Fisher

KNOWING (Know more about God, each other, and the needs of our world. ) “A Technicolor Promise” Everyone loves a rainbow! Not only is it a wonder of creation, radiating beauty after a rain, but more importantly as a sign of the covenant, it reminds us of God’s overwhelming love and grace. Our children are spending a week July 8-12, learning “A Technicolor Promise,” by Allen Pote and Carole McCann. They’ll be making props, learning songs and choreography and drama, to give us a sometimes humorous but still truthful re-telling of the story of Noah and the Ark. Come and enjoy our final show, Friday at 3:30 pm in the FLC! Music and Arts Camp welcomes all children, ages 6-13 Please register by July 3. Registration Brochures are at the Welcome Station. Please share a brochure with neighborhood children/friends! Volunteers are needed! Contact Nan.

Carnegie By The Creek Our singers who recently sang at Carnegie Hall are excited that a more-local concert of the same anthems, conducted by composers Joseph Martin and Pepper Choplin, will be offered this July at Buies Creek, NC! This will be a concert highlight of Campbell University’s summer “Oasis” Music and Worship Conference, featuring the Carnegie concert’s ecumenical assembly of singers from all over the USA, and accompanied by a bluegrass band. Everyone is invited to the concert, held on Monday, July 15th at 7:00 pm. If you’d like to hear this “replay” of Carnegie (by the Creek), contact Nan for arrangements regarding carpooling/ church bus.

LOVING (Love God through worship, and love our neighbor through service.) MUSIC MINISTRY NOTES from NAN

Let God Use You For A Masterpiece! Choir is one of God’s delightful masterpieces – and God composes it with a wide palette of willing servants. There seem to be as many reasons to join in as there are members! Some come to share their vocal training, some bring their love for artistic expression, and another may simply sing their best standing next to a strong singer; one may bring his thirst for deeper worship, and that one gets inspiration through studying the texts, while honestly, this one just comes to hang out with her spouse; maybe we even have one that just likes wearing these flowy green robes… But ultimately, each brings their own God-given voices which are blended together into a musical masterpiece that blesses all! Most of our ensembles are taking a well-deserved summer break. This fall, there will be offerings for every age and ability to join in our music ministry. All are invited and welcome

Need Some “Mi-Mi-Mi” Time? Now is a great time for Nan to spend some time with you to help you identify and grow your skills either as a singer or as a music reader! She can listen to your voice, give you some help on how to sound your best, and teach some healthy singing habits. Or, if you always wanted to learn how to read music, you can spend some time learning the basics to get started. Lessons are “free” – it surely will benefit AUMC’s music ministry for you to take some Mi-Mi-Mi time. So contact Nan for some one-on-one time nan@aldersgate.org or 477-0509 x 116

“Bigger Priorities, Fewer Distractions" - Message by Doug Lain - OT: Psalm 52 & NT: Luke 10:38-42 We are going to talk about reducing the number of distractions in life and keeping focused on your priorities.

SERVICE OF HEALING - WEDNESDAY, JULY 10TH, 6:30 PM Are you experiencing brokenness in your life? Are you or someone you love searching for something more on your spiritual journey? You are invited to join us on Wednesday, July 10th, as we host a Service of Healing at 6:30 pm in our sanctuary. Healing takes different forms for each of us as we all have differing needs and conditions. Some of us are dealing with physical illness or injuries while others are experiencing broken relationships with people or with God. Some of us find we have unresolved situations that result in guilt or traumatic memories that are troubling our spirits. In the New Testament, the Greek word sozo is the root word for healing, which is the same root for salvation and wholeness. Spiritual healing is God’s work of offering persons balance, harmony, and wholeness of body, mind, and spirit. Our hope for this service is to provide an opportunity to focus on God’s work of reconciliation between God and people, among persons in relationship, and within each person. Come, and bring your family, a friend or prayer partner, someone you’ve met during an illness or treatment to experience God’s healing power and the Jesus’ love.

A MOMENT OF GRATITUDE BY

PATTIE PORTER For many years, my only association with Aldersgate was through the Scouting program. My sons were nurtured from Tiger Cubs to Eagle Scouts. Many of the leaders & families we met were AUMC members. It was clear that these people were living their faith constantly & continually in their daily lives. So even though I wasn’t a member, I knew that if I ever needed anything, the Aldersgate community would open their arms & take me in. Aldersgate has taken me in, & I am honored to be a member now. I am grateful for the opportunities to learn through Bible study, love through service, grow & connect through corporate worship. Aldersgate equals love in action.

ALDERSGATE PRODUCE TABLE - CAN YOU HELP ? The Missions Committee has been asked to consider hosting a "produce table" to support Urban Ministries/Durham Food Pantry. This project will collect fruit and vegetables donated by congregation members, then offer these items to the general congregation for a donation at a table set up on Sundays. Funds received and leftover items will be donated. This project will start in late August. If you are interested in volunteering to organize and coordinate volunteers, please contact Glenn Reynolds ge.reynolds26@yahoo.com

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK Would you like to reach out and touch someone’s life? You can when you volunteer to help with the Interfaith Hospitality Network! Four weeks during the year, Aldersgate opens its doors and its hearts to homeless families. During that week, we offer a safe place to sleep, a hot meal, transportation to and from the Day House, and friendship. It’s a wonderful experience, and I hope if you are not already involved, that you will consider opening your heart to these families. PROJECT AGAPE CHRISTMAS BOXES Bishop Hope Ward has invited our church to be directly involved in Project AGAPE, the unique mission of the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodists with Christians In Armenia. Armenia is the oldest Christian nation in the world. My step-grandfather was Armenian and he regaled me with tales of his homeland, often overrun by other nations. That is why he ended up in the USA to avoid persecution. One of the ways we can participate in this mission is by supporting the AGAPE Christmas Box Ministry. For many children in refugee communities located in the Kashatagh District, this is the only Christmas gift they will receive. It may even be the first toy they have ever received. These boxes are a small gift containing a mighty message - the priceless love of Christ. Each year this mission has grown as more and more children participate. Each year the need for boxes exceeds the number of boxes available. Because of strict customs and import laws, our shoeboxes must be filled only with items from a specific list, no substitutions, no additions. A copy of this list will be available in each plastic box and at the information tables. If an item is not placed in the box, do not check the line item. Please carefully read the instructions at the top of the sheet in the plastic shoebox and follow them. We will supply 240 plastic shoeboxes for the congregation to fill starting June 30th. Do not wrap the shoeboxes or use cardboard boxes. Simply secure with a rubber band around the box. We will collect the boxes, store them and take them to the collection point in September. Our official dedication Sunday will be July 28th. Please contact Sandra and Glenn Reynolds (se.reynolds@yahoo.com) (919-614-2154) with questions or concerns. Most importantly, please pray for the child who will receive the shoebox. In a world lacking hope and peace, only faith in Jesus Christ can bring joy and true peace to the world. Jesus commanded us to let the children come to Him. Your gift will give a child that opportunity. God bless you and your generosity. Sandra Reynolds

TEN DOLLAR CLUB CHANGES & HOW YOU CAN BE A MEMBER ARE YOU A MEMBER OF THE TEN DOLLAR CLUB? If your answer is yes, and you've read the latest mailing, you know there are some changes happening this year...please read carefully and decide if you want to change to the IMPACT 10 level which ups your giving but also ups the money coming into the fund considerably, especially if EVERYONE decides to do it. This means an automatic $10 a month instead of remembering to do it five times a year. $10 a month, this is only two cups of Starbucks A MONTH! Please consider this option. NOT A MEMBER OF THE TEN DOLLAR CLUB? Now is a great time to join...it's the 60th anniversary. So, what is the Ten Dollar Club ? It is a FREE-to-the-church $50,000 grant for new faith communities (churches) who need conference help buying land, building their first building, or launching a new church. Every penny of your money goes to build new churches. All administrative costs are absorbed by the Office of New Faith Communities (at the conference level). There are several levels at which you may join, from $50 a year on up! There are at present 25 new faith communities in North Carolina that are in various stages of development. In the last 6 years, churches have been built that account for 2,500 persons in weekly worship. In other words, your $10 plus mine plus the other members of this club is being put to good use! Aldersgate has received it twice in the long ago past. If you are interested, please call Judy Alford 919-477-4943 or click im1angelmkr@aol.com - It’s easy to sign up !
