KOBE &

GIANNA HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY MAGAZINE SALUTES AND CONGRATULATES THE NBA ON THEIR PHENOMENAL "WIN" FOR KOBE AND GIANNA

This has been a difficult year, no doubt. Perhaps the worst many of us have seen in our lifetime. You'd have to read history (which you should do anyway) to find a year as painful as this one has been. But an amazing thing happened. In the midst of racial conflicts and disease and raw emotions, the NBA decided to take a stand and "listen to their Players." They heard what they were saying. They heard what they were feeling. And, in some ways, they "felt" what the Players were feeling. Their have been many critics of the NBA for taking "listening to their Players" and taking action to "show the Players" that they really were listening. Our country is divided. We know that. Most of it is just misinformation -- which is the basis for racism, sexism and bigotry. Misinformation. Because of the NBA deciding to "respect their Players" there has been some fallout. COVID-19, f course, rating have dropped, but critics want to falsely lay all the blame on the NBA's decision to "BE HUMAN." Hollywood Weekly Magazine commends the NBA for being "Human and showing real compassion." They stood behind their Players in the "Eye of The Storm." They held on together... The Lakers, in addition to the social climate bearing down on them, had a hole in their heart. The loss of Kobe and Gianna Bryant was so incredibly sad it passed into the realm of "surreal." Tell me you didn't walk around in a COMPLETE DAZE after hearing the news that Kobe and Gianna had died. This is not the same world, I'm sorry to say that. As LeBron James said "We'll never get over this." He's right. This is something we must live with, not something we get over. That's how much Kobe and Gianna meant to this world. We should never question whether the NBA cares about their Players -- they do. And received sufficient backlash for doing that. But at the end of the day we prevailed. The Lakers WON!! The NBA showed fans around the world that Basketball Players are Human Beings with feelings and thoughts and emotions and when you hire a Player you get all that along with their athletic talent. Lebron James is the MVP for the FOURTH time in his career. The Lakers are Champions, as they ALWAYS truly are. Kobe and Gianna Bryant are looking down on all of us right now with their Halos. Hollywood Weekly salutes Lakers Owners: Jeanie Buss, Johnny Buss, Jim Buss, Janie Buss, Jesse Buss, Edward P. Roski, Philip Anschutz, Patrick Soon-Shiong and the Buss Family Trusts. Hollywood Weekly salutes Lakers Head Coach Frank Vogel and his Top Assistant Coaches Lionel Hollins and Jason Kidd. And Hollywood Weekly Salutes the Incredible, Unstoppable Los Angels Lakers!!! Jen & Brad’s Honeymoon Mansion T

hough not much has been said lately about the possibility of Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt getting back together again now that they’re both single, the drop-dead-gorgeous home they bought soon after they were married in 2000 for $13.5 million, and owned together until one year after their 2005 divorce, has just sold. The 11,173-square-foot home, originally built in 1934 for twotime Oscar-winning actor Fredric March as one of the first movie star mansions in Beverly Hills, came on the market last year listed at $56 million. The price was lowered over time but didn’t sell and was taken off the market when it reached $44.5 million in March. It finally sold for $32.5 million in an off-market deal, more than double what Aniston and Pitt originally paid for it.

Jen and Brad’s love mansion is nestled into a bit over an acre on a quiet cul-de-sac with gated entrances on two streets, five bedrooms and thirteen baths between the main house and a one-bedroom guest house. Formal rooms are large with the dining room capable of seating 20 guests and the bar room with its original fireplace, eat-in gourmet kitchen and gym. The lower-level living room and bar-screening room open to the swimming pool terrace. Grounds are tropical and thick with mature greenery. Much of what exists inside and outside the house today was thanks to Jen and Brad. Soon after they bought the home in 2001, the super couple began a three-year renovation replacing the kitchen floor with heated marble, designing and installing a pub with floors sourced from a 200-year-old French château and adding a private screening room. They also added a tennis court and pavilion with a guest house on the upper level. In January of 2005, their separation was announced and the home sold in 2006 for $26 million to hedge fund executive Jonathan Brooks, who completed the renovation and added some features of his own. Having owned the home for 14 years and not counting the cost of his own changes, his profit on this sale was approximately $6 million. Susan Smith of Hilton & Hyland was the listing agent and representing the buyer were Justin Huchel and Drew Fenton who are also with Hilton & Hyland.

Azura Skye Swerving into a powerfully emotional role By Alex A. Kecskes

Azura Skye as Holly in The Swerve Known for her pivotal roles in the horror-mystery One Missed Call, the comedy-drama 28 Days, and the crime-drama Bandits, Azura Skye is an accomplished actress with an impressive repertoire of work in film and TV. A Los Angeles native, Skye began her career in the theatre as a child and segued into film and television in her teens. She has since performed in a wide variety of films including Red Dragon, Heaven’s Fall, and Wristcutters: A Love Story. In 2006, Skye appeared as Skyler in the comedy series The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman. Her work in television includes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, House M.D., The Mentalist, and Girls. 20 • HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY

In 2015, Skye appeared in the indie Take Me To The River, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Most recently, Skye landed recurring roles as Helen McGantry in the long-running TV fantasy-drama series Charmed, and as Darla in the mystery-drama series Riverdale. Fans will remember her as Sandy Engel-Karinsky in the comedy series Working the Engels and as Fiona in the horror-drama series American Horror Story. In the chillingly taught drama, The Swerve, Skye is Holly, a teacher and emotionally bruised mother of two on the precipice of mental illness.

Thank you for taking the time for this interview. The Swerve is an emotionally charged film about a damaged woman under siege. What attracted you to the role of Holly? Azura Skye: It’s just what you were saying. The role of Holly is an actor’s dream. You wait a lifetime hoping you’ll get a role that’s as challenging and emotional and complex as this one. When given the opportunity, I don’t know how you say no to a film like this. I’ve been doing this for quite a while and Holly is definitely the best role I’ve had in my life so far. I saw it as a real gift. Did you audition for the role? If so, what was that like? Skye: I did. Initially, the filmmakers expressed some interest in me. They reached out and sent me the script. I liked the script very much and I loved the character. Then we chatted on the phone and that seemed to go well. After not hearing from them for about a month, I was told that they really liked me and that they were still thinking about it. At that point, I sent them an audition tape in the hopes of persuading them. So that, I think, pushed things over the edge. What did you draw from to so convincingly portray a woman in the midst of emotional collapse? Skye: Thankfully, I didn’t have to draw from real-life experience. I’m not the traumatized soul you saw in Holly (laughs). To be honest, I don’t really know what I drew from. For me, a big part of portraying Holly was opening myself up to something larger than myself. Almost getting out of the way for something else to come through. There’s no way to prepare for a character like Holly. There’s only so much you can do. Much of it simply involves showing up for the day and making yourself available to her. There were several especially powerful scenes in this film. Which was your favorite? Skye: As an actor, the really emotional ones are the most fun. For the last scene in the grocery store, I woke up excited to go to work that day. There’s also a rather pivotal and heart-wrenching scene with the boys. It may sound a little weird but for an actor, that’s the fun stuff. You rarely get to do that. As actors, it’s what we dream about, scenes that present real opportunities. While we’re just playing, at the end of the day, those scenes were really traumatic and tough for me to watch. Was there an actor or film that drove you to pursue an acting career? Skye: There were lots of things that drew me into acting. As a child, I grew up without a television and I didn’t watch a lot of movies. The only time I’d watch any TV shows or movies is when I went to my grandmother’s house. I’d watch old Rodgers & Hammerstein Musicals and old Bewitched episodes. Elizabeth Montgomery was the big thing back then. I also watched Shirley Jones Musicals. I remember thinking that Shirley Jones was so beautiful and brilliant in Oklahoma.

Azura Skye What have you learned about this business that surprised you? Skye: That’s a good question. I suppose, that it’s not one continuous trajectory. It’s not like your career starts at some point and just keeps getting better and better. Like any career, there are ups and downs, valleys and summits. And that’s all part of the journey. I’m in it for the long haul. You have to be to endure those paces. I would imagine you get a ton of scripts. What do you look for in a script and role? Skye: It needs to be interesting and compelling with good writing. But it can be about any character or any scenario. Had you not gone into acting, what career would you have pursued? Skye: Perhaps some sort of linguistics. I really enjoy language, dialect. I do write, so I would have done that. I was a dancer for a long time, so before I wanted to act, I wanted to be a ballerina. I don’t know, sometimes I think I could have been a dermatologist. What were you like in high school? The girl most likely to….? Skye: Leave (laughs). I left high school early when I started working at fifteen. And after I started acting, that’s all I wanted to do. So I became more autodidactic and self-taught. I was determined to educate myself. When I was in high school, I was gone a lot—doing plays, films, and TV. So I kind of disappeared from school.

Bryce Pinkhamn as Rob and Azura Skye as Holly

How did you balance school and work? Skye: I only had a couple of years of crossover. But it was hard and very challenging. I went to a very rigorous school, so it was like having two full-time jobs. HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY • 21

ORSON WELLES Came To Rio in 1942, Ambassador Frederico Lapenda is bringing him Back to Brazil Again. BY FABIO GLINGANI

Frederico Lapenda

F

rederico Lapenda, international producer of Worldwide Motion Pictures is also the president of the Beverly Hills Film Festival, and the Tourism Ambassador of Brazil. Mr. Lapenda believes in something radical. He has carefully researched the matter and now believes that instead of producing TV, Internet and various Magazine ads to promote Tourism, the relevant Bureaus should produce “Actual Motion Pictures” to promote their culture, food and places of interest. In this manner, instead of spending money on ads, people could actually see the wonders of their country, around the world. This would promote tourism, especially in these days when people, the world over…dream about magnificent locations to visit.

22 • HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY

At the same time, while promoting tourism, Bureaus could make significant profits from the films they actually produce. They could quickly recoup their investments. For example, GAME OF THRONES being produced in Australia, was a huge profit machine for tourism… because all the filmed locations encouraged an explosion in new tourists. Films also have an incredible mystique of their own. And great movies are im-

mortal. Who will ever forget the ending to the great Romantic Thriller, CASABLANCA, when Humphrey Bogart said: “We will always have Paris!” That incredible movie actually sold Two Locations, at the same time. Casablanca, because of its mystery and adventure… and Paris, because of its Romance and Beauty. Both locations opened their doors to a new, huge explosion of Tourism, after the war ended.

There are endless examples of other Motion Pictures that successfully promoted towns, cities, and different country’s. THE BEACH, starring Leonardo de Caprio, was a huge success. According to O Jornal O Sul, the Maya Bay Beach location on the island of Koh Phi Phi in Thailand, increased by more than 2000% the number of visitors after the film was shown around the world. Since filming in 1999, the average num-

ber of visits was 171 people per day. But, after the film shown, globally…the average on visiting tourists was over 250 boats a day, and over 4000 visitors who came ashore. Thailand was visited by more than 35 million tourists in the year 2015, but there was a significant increase in 2016, because in that year there were 10 million tourists, thanks to the premiere of THE BEACH. BRAVEHEART, tells us the story of the legendary thirteenth century Scottish hero, William Wallace (played by Mel Gibson) came out in 1995 and the next year the amount of people visiting Scotland increased by a massive 300 percent. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 the second movie in the franchise starring Tom Cruise was shot in Sydney. It has been proven that the movie itself, increased tourism to Australia by over 200 percent.

Even FROZEN, the famous Disney musical in 2013, has not only won the heart of every child, but also fired up the tourism in Norway. Although the movie takes place in the mythical kingdom of Arendelle, it is loosely based on the Scandinavian country of Norway. According to recent Government Reports, travel to Norway from the United States jumped over 37 percent after the movie was released. That is one more reason why Producer Frederico Lapenda is determined to produce a movie that is indigenous to the history of Brazil. A story that cries out to be made, in the place where it happened. A story filled with glamour, the beauty of Rio, and the drama of espionage in wartime from the sands of Copacabana Beach, to the marble halls of the Presidential Palace. This is the story of the legendary actor, director and writer Orson Welles, who left Hollywood and came to Rio in 1942 … to ride a float in our Mardis Gras…and to be a spy.

HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY • 23

To write this exciting new film about the true history of Brazil, Frederico Lapenda has commissioned an Emmy Nominated, and Writer’s Guild Award Winning Writer, to fashion a new screenplay about an incredible life-changing event in the life of Orson Welles. An event that could only happen in our Brazil. An event that impacted our culture, and changed the course of film …. forever. Lapenda says that films bring tourism, which generates a gigantic impact on a country’s economy. It create jobs, exports the local culture and it gives locals a chance to understand other cultures. According to Gilson Machado the president of Embratur, our federal state owned agency, “tourism joins together almost 52 sectors of the whole economy. It is said to be the fastest way to an economy recovery. In the whole world, the tourism industry is bigger than the chemical one, representing almost 10.4% of the world GDP. Also, it generates 7 times more Jobs than the automotive industry.” Lapenda who had secured financing to shoot the film, walked away because the investor did not have the same vision for Brazil that he did. Lapenda went on to say: ‘The power and leverage of negotiation lies with the ability to walk away from a deal.’ This story about my Brazil, is one of the best film I have ever been associated with. And I simply refuse to do a film that fails to do justice to Mr. Welles, and to Brazil.”

Live Life

ecently, I’ve been thinking a lot about my future and my goals like many have during this pandemic. Most of us can’t wait to get out there and start living again after Covid19 stops wreaking havoc on people’s lives. This entire situation has made us realize that we need to live every second to the most. But for some, it will take a little more than a pandemic to live like they want to. Under the influence of the people around us, teens get peer pressured into liking or disliking something, to creating or breaking relationships with others. Just the way we live can be completely turned around by someone who should not or does not have a valid opinion.

Based on social norms and the standards held in our society, we tend to do things that make us miserable. For example, in my community, students take extremely hard courses and come out of high school with a 4.5 GPA and anxiety. Meeting the goals of everyone around is not worth mental illnesses and late nights of work with no sleep. As I said in one of my previous articles, the hardest thing we need to achieve is acceptance. Not acceptance by others, but acceptance by ourselves, including our goals and whatever future we want and have planned. After all, we are our hardest critics. 30 • HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY

A number of years ago, my music teacher and I were talking about life in general. He talked about the number of jobs and adventures he had and how he was completely stress-free about all of it. Then, a couple of weeks ago, my friend said something that really stuck with me. She said “live life.” I don’t know why, but this phrase gave me a completely new perspective about everything around us. Many teens burden themselves with past memories or future worries, unable to relieve these stresses. Whether it’s being nervous about an upcoming test or having an argument with a friend, we really are experts in bringing ourselves down. Instead of that, we should be enjoying our lives and forget about the things that are not important. A technique to completely de-stress is to start every day with a deep breath and a clean slate. I do this to not think about the issues holding me back from having a good day and being motivated to complete all the tasks I have planned. Every single day is an opportunity to do things we love. I look at every day as if it’s a new chapter so that I can live it to the best, filling my hours with experiences that I enjoy and moments that make me for-

get about the burdens I carry. If there is an instance where something does go wrong, I stop and ask myself the question “Will this be important to me in five years?” Bringing myself to think about the effects of the unwanted situation allows me to keep my priorities in check and move on. We are still in our youth, after all. We can do whatever we want with our time. There is no point in spending our hours doing something that does not make us happy. We just need to live our life to the fullest. Most of us are only starting our journey. Instead of worrying about our daily struggles, we should be excited about what our future has to offer. Remember our fears prevent us from growing. Working on what we want to, being who we want to be, and living life how we want should be our goal. I am writing this article in the hope to inspire you to look at the world differently as I do. To help you love life, be happy and “live life”.

CHENG YANG The Rebirth Of CHINESE CINEMA: SCREENWRITER/PRODUCER

BY ANTHONY EWART

It only takes one talented filmmaker to start a cinematic renaissance…or resurgence. A Charlie Chaplin. An Orson Welles. A Steven Spielberg. These are Directors but also screenwriters who fueled their cinematic passion into films that opened our eyes to new aesthetics and emotions in the world…or familiar emotions that we’d forgotten about. China has always maintained a strong cinematic presence. Hollywood routinely remake Chinese films into American classics. Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed (2006) was based on a Hong Kong film entitled “Internal Affairs (2002). Now China is following our blueprint for success and enlisted their favorite screenwriter/producer Cheng Yang to find engaging, exciting material to remake in China for their audience. 32 • HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY

Cheng’s career started with years of copy writing in PR. He then received his Masters Degree in filmmaking at New York Film Academy. Since then his Filmmaking Awards have been numerous: Kosice International Monthly Film Festival, IndieX Film Fest, Independent Shorts Awards -- Best Director. His latest cinematic venture is a Chinese remake of Netflix’s “House of Cards” to be released in 2021. Yang is simply an amazing writer director, which is why he has been trusted to begin the resurgence of Chenese cinema. Yang’s credits cover studio movies, television, commercials, documentaries and independent films, but “Power and Profit,” the retelling of “House of Cards,” is his most important project to date. It will be shown on China’s major TV station. China is waiting…

The political drama “Power and Profit” directed by the famous director Gao Xixi is now focuses on the mechanism of elections with Chinese officials’ election, which is where the similarity with “House of Cards” primarily ends. China is very different than America and the intricacies of their political system is fascinating. The leading role features Wenli Jiang, who is an award winning actress from China. Through Mr. Yang’s adaptation, Ms Jiang’s role embarks on a wonderful journey which unveils part of the political game in China. Cheng Yang is one of only a few bilingual screenwriters who has managed to integrate producing thought provoking global concepts into screenwriting. Through his producing success in getting the TV series “Power and Profit” onto the most influential TV station in China, Mr. Yang demonstrated his skill in closing major entertainment deals. As a writer Cheng is known for creating and establishing unforgettable characters, mastering scene-rhythm and dramatic elements through the script while simultaneously setting a foundation for post at pre-production. This requires a truly master-level of control and insight. Yang’s independent film “A Minor Malfunction,” which he both wrote and directed, won two Best Short Script awards, at both IndieX Film Fest and Independent Shorts Awards. This script also was also a Semi-Finalist at Indie Short Fest, with nominations from Hollywood Film Competition, New York Movie Awards, Venice Film Awards, Rome Independent Prisma Awards, American Screenwriting Conference and other film festivals.

directed by the famous director Linhao Zhou. It was released on v.Tencent.com in 2018 and has had 1.5 billion views so far. Subsequently, the show was authorized to screen on YouTube in 2019, and so far has 2.7 million views. After many years of screenwriting and working on a number of successful film and television projects, Mr. Yang has also worked with many American entertainment industry leaders. Not just in screenwriter, but also directors and directors of photography, including David Armstrong, the photographer of “SAW” and the director of “The Assassin’s Code.” Cheng also had the enviably opportunity to work with Director Joe Russo of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” In the Hong Kong film scene he’s worked with Cheng worked on projects for Derek Yee Tung Sing, a writer/director and Hong Kong Film Awards winner. We at Hollywood Weekly Magazine are so proud to introduce to Mr. Cheng Yang, a visionary Chinese filmmaker who is going to bridge the gap between Chinese and American cinema and create a beautiful entertaining experience for us all.

Cheng has now made “A Minor Malfunction” an expandable sci-fi drama series Pilot. He has production companies looking at this project including Caishen Ning’s Production company and Mumbear Entertainment. Yang’s script writing is sophisticated and perfect for American audiences, which is why “Power and Profit” is being produced in both China and the United States with an investment scale of 10 million. Up until now Cheng’s most well-known achievement in China is the 2018 TV series “Dr. Qin: Medical Examiner,” which in addition to its great commercial success also set off a trend in China of pursuing a realistic style in criminal investigation works. It’s the same kind of forensic craze that “CSI” started in America. The online TV series was produced by Tencent Video with an investment of tens of millions of dollars and was HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY • 33
