Also, we are excited to have had the opportunity to catch up with a Hollywood Weekly Magazine favorite, Doug Vermeeren. Last time we spoke with Doug he was staying busy working on various projects including ‘Operation Broken Sniper’, as well as horror films ‘Bring Me a Skin for Dancing in’, and ‘The Video Tape’. In true Doug fashion, he is continuing to stay busy and even took time out of his cruise to the Bahamas to tell us about the new and exciting projects he is working on, and we can’t wait to share the details!
Congratulations to Hollywood Weekly Magazine's Africa Correspondent & Ambassador, Egor Kelly (fka Egor Efiok), who recently wedded her heartthrob, Kelly Okpa Odock, amidst pomp and pageantry, at The Transforming Church (TTC), in the city of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. Egor met Kelly in April 2020, when she visited Nigeria and got locked down there with him in the city of Calabar.
Enjoy!

BABYLON
FROM Damien Chazelle, Babylon is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.

M3GAN
SHE’S MORE THAN JUST A TOY. SHE’S PART OF THE FAMILY.
FROM the most prolific minds in horror— James Wan, the filmmaker behind the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises, and Blumhouse, the producer of the Halloween films, The Black Phone and The Invisible Man—comes a fresh new face in terror.
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion
and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.
A Man Called Otto
BASED on the # 1 New York Times bestseller “A Man Called Ove,” A Man Called Otto tells the story of Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks), a grump who no longer sees purpose in his life following the loss of his wife. She challenges him to see life differently, leading to an unlikely friendship that turns his world around. SHOWTIME to Premiere CYPRESS
HILL: INSANE IN THE BRAIN
PRODUCED BY SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT AND MASS APPEAL, DOCUMENTARY SPOTLIGHTS THE GROUNDBREAKING HIP HOP GROUP’S DECADES-LONG CAREER AND INFLUENCE
AS PART of the network’s HIP HOP 50 banner, SHOWTIME announced that CYPRESS HILL: INSANE IN THE BRAIN (w/t) will premiere Wednesday, April 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Chronicling the legendary L.A. rap group Cypress Hill, the documentary film will debut along with two newly acquired titles LA MADRINA: THE SAVAGE LIFE OF LORINE PADILLA, premiering Friday, April 15 at 8 p.m. ET, 5 p.m. PT, and BUSHWICK BILL: GETO BOY, premiering Friday, April 29 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The announcement was made today at the network’s Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour presentation.
Told through the intimate lens of photographer and director Estevan Oriol (LA Originals), CYPRESS HILL: INSANE IN THE BRAIN is a smoke-filled journey across the lives and careers of the groundbreaking, genre-defying Hip Hop group, Cypress Hill. Their unique sound, influenced by their Latin roots and West Coast upbringing, was built on a movement rooted in true authenticity: from cultivating the flower, to smoking it, to rapping about it, their influence is forever burned into the musical landscape of Hip Hop as they continue to stay relevant after 30 years. Using a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival footage captured by Oriol himself, as well as images of band members B Real, DJ Muggs, Sen Dog and Eric “Bobo” Correa, CYPRESS HILL: INSANE IN THE BRAIN tells the story of a brotherhood that has withstood the test of time to create a truly original, everlasting legacy.
CYPRESS HILL: INSANE IN THE BRAIN is produced by Sony Music Entertainment and Mass Appeal for SHOWTIME. Tom Mackay and Richard Story of Sony Music Entertainment, Sacha Jenkins and Peter
Bittenbender of Mass Appeal, and Deb Klein of Primary Wave serve as executive producers. The film is produced by Oriol and Peter J. Scalettar.
Directed by filmmaker and author Raquel Cepeda (Some Girls, Bling: A Planet Rock), LA MADRINA: THE SAVAGE LIFE OF LORINE PADILLA follows a beloved South Bronx matriarch and former “First Lady” of the Savage Skulls gang as she struggles to remain visible in a rapidly gentrifying community she
helped rebuild in the 1980s. With one foot firmly grounded in the outlaw life and the other as an activist and spiritual advisor, Lorine straddles the complexities of multiple worlds. Employing rich, neverbefore-seen archives of the borough that gifted the world both salsa and hip-hop culture, the documentary embarks on a complicated and, at times, surreal journey through five decades of Bronx history and resilience in La Madrina’s own words. Top prospect Pepiot comes into camp with clear head, new weapon
WHEN THE Dodgers entered the offseason, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman felt confident in the organization's starting pitching depth.
The Dodgers had the best team ERA in the Majors last season, and they'll have most of that production returning when the 2022 season gets underway. But a big reason for Los Angeles’ confidence is the development of top pitching prospects such as Ryan Pepiot, Landon Knack and Bobby Miller.
Pepiot, 24, is the top pitching prospect in the organization, according to MLB Pipeline. Since the Dodgers selected him in the third round of the 2019 Draft, Pepiot has opened eyes every step of the way. He had a strong debut season, posting a 1.93 ERA in 13 appearances. In 2020, he was part of Los Angeles’ Summer Camp roster and was one of the most impressive arms at the alternate training site.
In ‘21, Pepiot showed his dominance, but he also encountered some expected adversity for a pitcher going through the Minors. He dominated at Double-A Tulsa, posting a 2.87 ERA in 15 appearances and striking out 81 over 59 2/3 innings. But when Pepiot was called up to Triple-A Oklahoma City, he struggled, finishing with a 7.13 ERA in 11 appearances.
“A lot of that was mechanical stuff. Obviously, I was trying to figure some things out, but I got in my own head with some things, and I was just out there kind of like a robot,” Pepiot said. “I had a bunch of different thought processes out there, so I was already behind the eight ball.”
Pepiot said he visited with psychologists this offseason in order to get back to his normal self. On the mound, he feels like he’s more prepared, and he has more weapons, too. Pepiot came into this spring with an added focus on his mechanics, but he has also learned a “sweeper” breaking ball, which is essentially a mix of a slider and a curveball.
The right-hander, much like he did with his signature changeup, tried different grips on the pitch until he finally found one he liked.
“I was throwing a harder slider, and it just didn’t have the right variation between my changeup velocity and fastball,” Pepiot said. “So we tried to figure out a grip that works. It’s actually what Blake Treinen throws, and we have about 10 other guys that have tried to throw it. I picked it up this offseason, and it has come a long way.”
In a scrimmage against Asian Breeze, an Arizona-based independent team, Pepiot utilized the pitch to finish off a pair of strikeouts. With a 96 mph fastball, the changeup and the sweeper, Pepiot struck out five of the six batters he faced.
“I was happy with the work I put out there. I put in a lot of work this offseason,” Pepiot said. “Just being able to be out there against somebody else other than someone wearing a Dodgers jersey, it’s always nice to be able to do that.”
At some point this year, Pepiot hopes to face opposing jerseys at the big league level. He can feel how close he is to achieving his lifelong goal of reaching the Majors, and the Dodgers could use his talented arm. But with the lockout still in place, Pepiot is staying focused on what he can control.
“It’s exciting to be as close as I guess I am,” Pepiot said. “But I also don’t want to look ahead because I have to stay where my feet are at. … I just have to come in here every single day, do my work.”

Rams hire Liam Coen as offensive coordinator
THE RAMS are bringing back a familiar face to their offensive coaching staff.
Los Angeles has hired Liam Coen as their new offensive coordinator. Coen replaces Kevin O'Connell, who was named head coach of the Minnesota Vikings on Feb. 16.
Coen returns to L.A. after spending the 2021 season as the University of Kentucky's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. In 2021, the Wildcats ranked fifth in scoring offense (32.3 points per game) and eighth in total offense (425.2 yards per game) in the SEC, including fifth in the conference in rushing offense at 199.5 yards per game. Under Coen's guidance, quarterback Will Levis finished sixth in the SEC in passing yards with 2,826, while running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. and wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson each finished with the secondmost rushing (1,379) and receiving yards (1,334), respectively, in the conference.
Prior to joining Kentucky's coaching staff, Coen spent three years on the Rams' staff from 2018-20. He served as assistant wide receivers coach in 2018 and 2019
before taking on assistant quarterbacks coach in 2020, when he helped Jared Goff post his fourth-consecutive season with 3,800 or more passing yards.
In 2019, Coen helped L.A.'s receiving unit produce a pair of 1,000-yard receivers for the second-consecutive season, a feat that had not been accomplished since a streak of four such seasons from 1999-2002. Wide receiver Robert Woods posted his second-straight 1,000-yard season, finishing with 1,134, while wide receiver Cooper Kupp tallied his first 1,000-yard season with a teamhigh 1,161 receiving yards.
Coen's first season in Los Angeles was highlighted by helping the Rams swiftly work 2018 offseason acquisition Brandin Cooks into the No. 3 scoring offense in the NFL. Cooks' 1,204 receiving yards and Woods' 1,219 marked career-highs for both players and made them the first Rams receiving duo to record more than 1,000 yards each since Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce in 2006.

LA Galaxy Fans to Participate in 2024 adidas Kit Design Process
THE LA Galaxy today announced that the club will involve Galaxy fans to participate in the design process of the club’s 2024 adidas Primary Kit via a fan survey. The survey will drive fan insight into key decisions such as color, embellishments, patterns and more. This new fan experience for LA Galaxy fans will bring them closer than ever before in driving the concept behind an LA Galaxy kit.
“We’re excited to include fans and supporters of the LA Galaxy in the design process of our 2024 Primary Kit,” said LA Galaxy Chief Marketing Officer Doug Vosik. “Each year’s kit is one of the most important season initiatives for both players and fans. Having the voice of our community is critical to ensure
our on-field look reflects player, fan and supporter feedback. The survey is a unique opportunity for everyone to help shape the club we all love.”
Back in 1996, the LA Galaxy were born from a community’s love for family, soccer and Los Angeles. That community remains critical to shaping the LA Galaxy, and as a result, Galaxy fans will have direct input in the design process of the 2024 kit. Fans will be involved throughout the project, with a series of roundtables, interviews and surveys planned for the coming months. The result of this project will be the 2024 kit, to be unveiled shortly before the 2024 season.
LA Galaxy fans will receive an email on to participate in the survey.

TREES have a special place in our lives. They are spiritual in nature and are one of the most meaningful expressions from a Higher Power most of us call God. In fact Siddhartha Gautama Buddha of the 5th and 6th century received enlightenment when he sat under the Bodhi tree in Tibet. He was born to a royal family of the Shakya clan in Lumbini, now known as Nepal, India. He abandoned his royal heritage to pursue a life as a religious teacher who founded Buddhism and was a wandering ascetic. The great sages and spiritual leaders meditate under trees and receive inspiration. Dame Munni Irone who also originates from India of royal heritage has made no secret that her life is guided by spiritual principles. She was awakened spiritually by age 7 from her Shifu mentor, then her 2nd awakening from Shifu mentor, Dr. Hong of FOWPal Federation. She has made a commitment to make a difference to help make the world a better place. Her extensive traveling throughout many countries has joined forces with world leaders to answer the cry for love and peace.
Significance Tree Planting
The beautiful Dame Munni Irone , has initiated and inspired numerous tree planting ceremonies. She promotes her saying" My heart to your heart, we are ONE," which she follows by holding up her index finger as a symbol of unity. One of the first tree plantings took place in the city of Gujarat 2017 when Prime Minister Modi oversaw a tree planting initiated by Dame Munni Irone in an historical garden. The tree planting was organized by the Honorary Sonal Joshi, an advocate and public figure. This occurred on their Independence Day. Dame Munni Irone raised the
flag alongside other delegates. She also attended an interfaith event in Mumbai where she was the special guest in the company of His Holiness Dalai Lama, Baba Ram Dev which was organized by Dr. Lokesh Muni, a global peace leader.
A tree planting ceremony also occurred in Nepal organized by Dr. Vineeta Katour. Another tree planting occurred at Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic thanks to Majesty King Abdul Pataj.
Dame Munni Irone holds many titles including doctor. Dr. Dame Munni Irone has been aware of environment and climate change since 1983. She and her late
OF

LA LUCHA: GETTING SCHOOLED IN AMERICA FULL LENGTH FILM
Incredible film, extremely raw, and emotional. A story of gang violence, trauma and sadly, the reality so many kids in Los Angeles are affected by, all on top of everyday teenage struggles. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen, it was shocking, sad, sometimes unbelievable, inspiring, and most importantly a story that needs to be told. The film is also educational, and greatly insightful.

FREDERICO LAPENDA,
co-creator of Stan Lee's Allies of the Amazon, and Rob Minkoff, The Lion King director, were honored at the
WORLD FILM INDUSTRY CONFERENCE.
by Emma Pan | Photos by Yifan Wang
FROM DECEMBER 11th to December 12th, the first World Film Industry Conference was held at the Loews Hotel in Santa Monica, Los Angeles. The World Film Conference was created by Chairman Haige Wang with the goal of promoting international co-production and communication in the film industry. It is an independent international body that brings together leading figures to converse and discuss essential modern topics in the film industry. Panels with topics such as "Impact of Biden-Xi Meeting: Opportunities and Challenges of U.S.-China Cultural Communication," "Post-epidemic Film Industry," and "Opportunities and Challenges for Film Education" were discussed in the conference.
Among others, tributes were paid to Frederico Lapenda, co-creator of Stan Lee's Allies of the Amazon, along with Rob Minkoff, co-director of The Lion King. Filmmaker Frederico Lapenda received the "Outstanding Achievement" award in the "Sports Entertainment" category and Rob Minkoff the "Best Producer" award. Other speakers at the conference include American film producer and CEO of Pandemonium Films Bill Mechanic, seven-time Grammy Award winner Gordon Williams, Hollywood actor and producer Omar Kaczmarczyk, and previous president/CEO of BBC America Bill Hilary, Chinese film producer Sherwood Wu, etc.
Filmmaker Frederico Lapenda has been involved in the world of sports since 1993, when the first "Ultimate Fighting Championship" (UFC) was created, being considered by specialized magazines as one of its creators. Incidentally, he introduced the world's first Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Marco Ruas, in 1995. Lapenda was also the first non-Japanese producer to promote a fighting event in Japan - "World Vale Tudo Championship WVC." He was also a pioneer in the production of events for American Pay-per-view (PPV) and was responsible for the first Brazilian PPV in 1997 and on Youtube in 2011. Lapenda also produced two video games, Fight Game Rivals for XBOX Microsoft and Fight Game Heroes by Sony Ericsson. He was one of the first to spread this sport around the

world, being considered, along with Art Davie, as one of those responsible for the globalization of the sport and UFC.
Director Robert Ralph "Rob" Minkoff is an American director, screenwriter, producer, and animator. He is known for directing the Academy Award–winning animated feature, The Lion King, along with Roger Allers. Outside of Disney, he directed the family film Stuart Little as well as its sequel and the Dream Works adaptation of Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Minkoff co-created (alongside Shane Morris, Tim Mansfield, and Elise Allen) the Nick Jr. animated series Rainbow Rangers. In 2010, Minkoff was attached to direct the fantasy action adventure Chinese Odyssey. Minkoff served as a director on the 2018 animated Netflix original animated series of the late Anna Dewdney picture book franchise Llama Llama, overseeing all aspects of production.
The panel, "World Audiovisual Technology Forum," featured Frederico Lapenda, Bill Hilary, Gordon Williams, and Haige Wang. They discussed the impact of technological innovation on the film industry. The discussion on Web 3 and the use of AI in the film industry was frequently brought up. Lapenda specifically talked about his experience with technology. He said, "In 1990, I was studying film in the U.S., and I was trying to figure out how I was going to be able to film. At the time, films were shot on 35mm which were very expensive. I realized
that you need money to make films, so I had a commercial understanding of the filmmaking process. In school, I learned about pay-per-view. It was fascinating to me the thought that you can produce an event and get your money back in ninety days, unlike the two years you need with a movie. I felt that this is easier to sell. The return on investment is much faster. That's how I started to examine the industry and got into sports entertainment. I began to think that someday everyone in the world would have pay-per-view. In 2011, I was able to do a payper-view on youtube. Technology has helped me a lot with my career."
In "6th Sino-U.S. Cultural Industry Summit", featuring Frederico Lapenda, Sherwood Hu, Rob Minkoff, Bill Hilary, Gordon Williams, and Haige Wang, the panelists talked about the impact of the Biden-Xi meeting and the opportunities and challenges of U.S.-China communication. Minkoff spoke about how it is essential to create stories that find commonality in humanity. He suggests that we should focus on this aspect despite the transitional political climate. He stressed that there are always going to be people interested in good stories. Additionally, he talked about his experience traveling to China for the first time. He said, "it opened up a world to me because the reality of China was far different from what I had imagined growing up." Lapenda engaged in this topic by talking about
HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY • 29
his view on the relationship between China and the U.S. He suggests that even if the government sees things differently sometimes, the people see things in similar ways. He believes that the future for international co-production is bright.
Other panels in the conference engaged in many different topics, such as pursuing higher education in film production, featured Elizabeth Daley, Dean of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Brian Kite, Interim Dean at UCLA, and Susan Ruskin, the Dean & Executive Vice President at the American Film Institute. They discussed the importance of including international students in film schools to promote cross-cultural productions. They stressed the bonding effect of gathering a diverse group of young people and how that creates the future of international co-production.
The World Film Industry Conference promoted the discussion of international aspects of the film industry. Speakers from all over the world talked about their understanding of the shifting film industry. Filmmaker Frederico Lapenda and director Rob Minkoff's engagement sparked insightful conversations on the relationship between the entertainment industry between the U.S. and China and filmmaking in the digital age. They are awarded for their excellent work and contributions to the international section of the film industry. Hopefully, this conference will give filmmakers and audiences a new perspective on the future of international film productions.

MARTHA MILLAN
On the The Cleaning Lady, Acting and Life
By Alex A. Kecskes
Australian-Filipino actress Martha Millan is best known for her work in The OA, Succession, Entourage, Madam Secretary, and Strong Medicine. She also appeared in The Great New Wonderful, in all three primary shows of Law & Order, and the indie film The Drummer.
Born in the Philippines and raised in Sydney, Australia, Martha graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She was an acting teacher for children and previously taught extracurricular and after-school programs in Brooklyn public schools. When COVID hit, she created her own global online drama education program for children in Brazil, Portugal, Israel, and the US. An advocate for diversity in the entertainment industry, Martha is proud to be starring in a series portraying Filipinos.
In the hit drama series The Cleaning Lady, which returned for its second season on FOX, Millan plays Fiona, a fun, emotionally volatile, and chaotic Filipina sister-in-law. As a cleaning lady and undocumented single mother, Fiona struggles to raise her children amidst the strife and turmoil created by fellow cleaning lady Thony, played by Elodie Yung. Thony, a doctor who comes to the US for medical treatment to save her ailing son, becomes a cleaning lady for the mob and starts playing the game by her own rules.
Thank you for taking the time for this interview. What drew you to this series and the character of Fiona?
Martha Millan: I was just so blessed with such an incredible, emotionally challenging role. The show tackles several very socially relevant issues while providing some real entertainment.
Many actors have a love-hate relationship with auditions. Did you audition for the role?
Martha: Of course. I’m not at the level where producers just hand me roles. Most of the auditions were self-taped. I was in New York with very tight spaces and I taped my audition in my bathroom (laughs) because there was so much noise outside. I had to be creative.
How did you prepare for the role of an undocumented mother trying to raise her children?
Martha: I wanted to portray an undocumented mother and worker with authenticity and the issues they face every day. I watched a documentary about the real lives of undocumented people and their constant fear of losing everything at any moment. It was just so unsettling that there is no stability on any day for them. And that's something that I wanted to capture. But foremost was being a mother, which I'm not. So I wanted to be authentic in portraying the real relationship Fiona had with her children.
Elodie Yung is amazing and the chemistry between Fiona and Thony helps ground the character of Fiona.
I do love the chemistry between Fiona and Thony—the panic, the anger, the screaming.
Martha: Yes (laughs). It’s funny because we are really very close. I have so much respect for Elodie. She guided me in many ways. Our friendship really blossomed during the pilot and the pandemic. I was so fortunate to have such a wonderful relationship off the set. I think that definitely helps with our on-screen chemistry.
32 • HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
The series is chaotic, heartbreaking, and laugh-out-loud funny at times. You ride a roller coaster of emotions watching each episode.
Martha: That’s a testament to the writers and creators—Miranda Kwok and Melissa Carter— who balanced the show beautifully in such a way that it does include all those elements. It's such a roller coaster ride, especially for every actor. We never know what's going to happen in the next episode. We only get the scripts right before we start shooting the next day. It's kind of like life, for as an actor, it's better not to anticipate too much.
Do you have a favorite scene or scenes?
Martha: For me, it would be with Thony in season one, episode six where I just found out that she was working with the FBI. That confrontation really brought out the reality between us. We're trying to protect each other but at what cost? And how will it affect the rest of the family with the choices we make? I think that scene really brought things home between Thony and Fiona. That was a really important scene for me.
What did you find most challenging about playing Fiona?
Martha: Her intensity. The funny thing is I used to think I wasn’t very similar to Fiona but in some moments, I do see Martha in Fiona, which is quite scary (laughs). It’s basically Martha’s amplified version of a heightened state. Emotionally, it’s exhausting but for an actor, it’s so gratifying because you’re going through those heightened moments. And to keep it real and believable is always a challenge.
How do you calm down after those screaming matches with Thony?
Martha: (laughs) Most of the time, once we cut, I’m laughing and making fun of how intense Fiona is. I think that’s necessary. As an actor, it's important to find that balance between when you're acting and when you can just relax and be yourself. Because as Martha, I'd lose my mind if I was intense like that all the time. So I go running a lot and have a drink after.
You previously taught acting for extracurricular and after-school programs in Brooklyn public schools. Tell us about your global online drama education program for children.
Martha: I was doing that during Covid. But with the show’s busy schedule, I've been unable to maintain that. I will pick it up again once we wrap season two. It was such a great opportunity for me, especially when there were no auditions or productions. I wanted to do something creative and it was quite satisfying to give back. But the children definitely schooled me in many ways, bringing me back to the basics of acting. It's a quick three-week course. As an actor, it’s important to be strong and to really connect to the basics so you can start building a foundation for truth in your acting. Seeing that in the children was wonderful.
You're an advocate for diversity in the entertainment industry and proudly starring in a series portraying Filipinos. Can you go into your goals in those endeavors?
Martha: I love that people say I’m an advocate. It’s about being included in the industry. It’s something that I appreciate and fully embrace. I love that this show is groundbreaking on so many levels where the representation includes the writers, directors, and producers. It just
shows what can be created on a level that everyone can relate to. Not just different ethnic cultures but the world is so global now and to ignore that can be quite a disadvantage for a lot of companies. I think people are very aware of how global we are. It’s wonderful and I think moving forward, we should not make it such an issue that we’re being diverse. It should be considered normal.
What have you learned about working in this industry that surprised you?
Martha: I think it’s learning how much it takes to make a TV show. As actors, we come on set and learn our lines. But I have to give credit to the crew, the producers, and those behind the scenes. To facilitate just three minutes of what you see on TV takes a whole other world and machine to produce. I’ve learned that it’s not just about the actors but a collaborative experience of peoples’ creativity—from the writers to the DPs and crew. Even the decisions that FOX and Warner Brothers make. It's just such a huge world that creates that tiny moment of beauty that people gravitate toward.
Any advice for young actors trying to break into the field?
Martha: Never lose your fearlessness. When I was young, nothing was going to stop me. I think that's the key. While you are tainted by many experiences, you should never lose your fearlessness. It helped me over the years. Hold on to that feeling that nothing can stop you. I've been in this industry for 20 years and I've found my sense of stability and recognition. My ethnicity, my age, I've gone through the gamut so that sense of fearlessness will pay off.
What were you like in high school? The girl most likely to…?
Martha: The girl most likely to have too much fun (laughs). For me, it’s always been about having fun, which is how I’m on set today.

KEEPING UP WITH
Douglas Vermeeren
WE ARE EXCITED to have had the opportunity to catch up with a Hollywood Weekly Magazine favorite, Doug Vermeeren.
If I were to truly tell our readers about every individual project Doug has his hand in, I’m fairly sure I would run out of space on the page. With his
vastly diverse skillset, it seems Doug has yet to turn down a challenge and continues to break barriers within the entertainment industry. From acting, producing, and stunt work, to public speaking, podcasts and directing, I am left wondering, is there anything he can’t do?
Each time we speak with Doug, he greets us with his warm, inviting energy. His positive energy and cando attitude are simply contagious. But what stands out most about Doug, and always has, is his genuine passion for what he does. He not only puts his time and energy into these projects, but he really does put his love in first and foremost, and it’s abundantly clear. I believe that truly
is what continues to separate Doug from the rest, and if I had to guess, it may be a part of his secret to success.
Per usual, there are so many great new things he’s working on. One of the projects Doug is excited to be a part of is called ‘Recreating 1912’, which is extremely unique and intriguing. This project attempts to use modern day technology to create a film from the silent film era. Meaning all stunts, props, filming methods, etc., will be used in an effort to re-create and re-capture the early history of film. With Doug’s lifelong love of films, I am personally beyond excited to see what he does with this one, and I am sure he won’t disappoint. You can look out for this
36 • HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
one around April of next year.
Doug’s busy schedule also includes an action thriller titled ‘A Bullet with Her Name on it’, which he begins shooting in March. The 2023 summer film takes us on a journey of a hitman hired by the government to hunt down and murder a very surprising, and unlikely target. The edge-ofyour-seat, action packed thriller is a perfect fit for Doug, and there’s no doubt his rugged side, and raw talent will shine through in this role.
He is also excited to share with us that he will be featured in the film ‘Bullets, Blades and Blood’. Which is a story of revenge, featuring an excovert military operator who goes out on a personal mission when his family
is kidnapped, and possibly murdered.
Doug shares with us “I’m excited for all of the projects that I’m involved in for many different reasons, and in many different ways.” He continues “One of the things I am most thankful for, is just being able to work again since the COVID-19 restrictions have bene lifted. I am also extremely excited about being able to work with and be surrounded by so many incredibly talented people who love what they do and are great at it”.
When we asked Doug what challenges he’s facing with these projects, he said “Honestly, this is a difficult question to answer, I am not experiencing any specific difficulties on any of the projects”. He goes on to share “I think one of my biggest challenges in general is just keeping my schedule sorted. I have an amazing team that helps keep me on track, and I am extremely thankful for them.” He continues by telling us “I think for most actors it’s all about finding the balance where you can be doing a fantastic job on your current project, while also being able to spend time and energy looking at future projects. I am beyond grateful that so many filmmakers are considering me for their projects right now. It’s not always like that and I’m sure that most actors can relate.”
Doug also opens up and digs a little deeper with us when we asked about what’s going on in his personal life. He shares with us “Professionally, I have a lot of great upcoming opportunities over the next two years. These are all projects I am really excited about, and I am looking forward to what will come next. Personally though, it can be a bit complicated. I have great family and friends, and I’m staying busy. However, right now I’m single so we will see what happens next in that department…”
Although Doug’s raw talent and true passion for what he does have given him so much success, he also shares “There are so many people that helped me with the success that I have been experiencing. I am lucky enough to have the support of so many great family members and friends. But there are also people within the industry who have been so
helpful and kind to me”. He goes on to tell us “Those people have given me great advice, as well as helped open doors for me. But most importantly, they helped me see where I was lacking, and allowed me to be aware of my weaknesses.” He continues by saying “Those conversations haven’t always been easy to hear, but they have been crucial in my growth. Of course, no one likes to hear about their deficiencies. It can even be painful to hear, but oftentimes those conversations have ended up being powerful opportunities for me.”
Coming so far from the little boy messing around with his grandfather’s 8mm video camera, we asked Doug what he would say to his childhood self if he could go back, and his answer is surprising “Most of the time when people ask this question, it comes with the idea that you would go back and tell yourself something that would change your present or future. The reality is, I love my life. I love what’s happening and I love where things are going.” He continues by sharing with us “So, I don’t know if I would give myself much advice. I would simply say ‘Just keep going, believe in yourself, try your best and have fun’.” His answer isn’t one I’ve ever heard be for and left me feeling that if only we could all be so easy on our past selves, I believe the world would be a much lighter place.
HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY • 37
You can keep an eye out for Doug’s new project, Awakening the Orbs Archive, which starts shooting this month. The film is being directed by award winning director Aaron Glanfield, and Doug is really looking forward to being a part of it. The feature film which takes place in post-apocalyptic earth, tells a story of humanity fighting for its survival, while at the same time trying to track down and protect a magical power it desperately needs. There is no release date as of today, but Doug promises to keep us updated.
Recently, Doug has also landed a spot on the TV series ‘Operation Majestic’ which will premier this summer on CTV in Canada. The series tells a story of a UFO conspiracy and a secret organization called Majestic, who exhaust all their efforts trying to hide information from the public.
Doug plays a character by the name of Nick Tyler who is torn between loyalty to his agency, and a dangerous truth that must be exposed. The show gives an early 90’s X-files vibe, and Doug tells us he is really looking forward to start shooting in the spring.
It seems there’s never a dull moment in Doug’s life. Whenever we get to steal a few moments of his time, he always has new, and incredibly exciting projects to discuss with us. It left me curious, what’s his dream role?
Doug lets us in a bit more, and shares with us “There are a few dream projects that I would love to be a part of. I am a huge James Bond fan and have been since I was a kid. So, I would be thrilled to do anything they asked me to do in the James Bond series.” He continues by telling us, “I would also love to do something for
Marvel, or Star Wars. I have always been a massive fan of both of those franchises as well, and I would be incredibly honored to be a part of a legacy like that in some way.”
Although Doug possesses a generally quiet and shy demeanor - to me, these big dream answers are no surprise. His success up until now speaks for itself, and really shows that his ability to continue dreaming big and shoot for the moon is destined to land him amongst the stars.
If you would like to contact Doug for future projects, you can find him directly on his website, www.
