Founder/ CEO Betty LaMarr Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen, It is with extreme pride and pleasure that I welcome you to the 5th Annual Girls to Greatness PATHMAKER Awards Gala! Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate exceptional women and pay tribute to their extraordinary achievements. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Honorary Host Committee and the Executive Planning Committee, I would like to congratulate all of tonight’s honorees. As we celebrate EmpowHer’s Girls to Greatness 5th year, and our 15th Anniversary year in purpose, your presence tonight demonstrates your commitment to EmpowHer Institute and our students. This year we created a two-part celebration by hosting our Inaugural Mentor to Inspire Teen Conference. This event allowed all of our 300 girls to participate in a day of mentoring with employees from our sponsoring organizations. They also had an afternoon of hands-on STEM experiences hosted by B-STEM, a non-profit partner organization and panel discussions with our distinguished panelists. Thanks to Amy E. Wakeland, First Lady of Los Angeles, as our Keynote Speaker. In this year where women are stepping up and making the difference in social and political causes like, Me Too, Times UP and United States of Women Initiative, we are glad to be surrounded by this same spirit in our Honorees and Honorary Host Committee. It is comprised of a group of incredibly talented and committed people who support EmpowHer’s mission to empower marginalized girls and young women by giving them the skills necessary through education, training, and mentorship to enable them to become confident, college and career ready. At a time when everyone is stretched to the limit, our mentors and volunteers still found a way to lend their support to ensure the presentation of tonight’s event. I salute their passion, tireless efforts and the dedication put forth. Their commitment exemplifies the spirit of teamwork, cooperation and excellence. I personally want to thank the companies that employ these individuals; you are truly the unsung heroes. Your continued support makes the PATHMAKER Awards possible. We are proud to have Verizon, JP Morgan Chase, Quest Diagnostics, UPS and CBS Entertainment Diversity and Inclusion as our top sponsors this year. We thank all of our sponsors, Bergman, Dacey, Goldsmith, Frontier Communications, IMRI, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Microsoft, SoCalGas, The Perry Foundation, United Oil, Vaco and our inkind sponosrs, AMC Theatres, CancunCards and Walton Issacson. There is no way to measure the gratitude we have for all our distinguished corporate sponsors. Thank you and enjoy the evening!

APPEARANCE BY Goapele

Singer, Actress, Writer & Producer Goapele displays every side of her voice on the 2017 Dreamseeker EP [EMPIRE]. In one breath, she’s urging social change and boldly standing up for righteousness in the face of inequality. In the next, she’s guiding her child with a sensitive understanding, hard-earned wisdom, and unconditional love. In between, she’s as seductive and soulful as ever seamlessly slipping from activist, mother, and poet to temptress. This delicate sonic shape-shifting is a technique she introduced on her now classic 2001 debut Closer, but she hones it to perfection on D reamseeker.

That diversity has defined the Oakland-born singer, songwriter, producer, actress, and designer since the start of her career in 2001. Her influence and impact can be felt throughout R&B, soul, and hip-hop. E ven Closer yielded the iconic anthem “Closer.” To date, it’s impressively racked up over 6 million Spotify streams and been sampled by everyone from Drake to YG. In between touring the world, she has released four full-length albums and collaborated with a diverse array of heavy hitters such as Snoop Dogg, E-40, Eric Bené t , Soulive, and Jeff Bhasker. A film and television mainstay, she’s landed high-profile syncs in S parkle, H oney, 9 0210, and many more. Along the way, The Washington Post fittingly described her as “ soulful as always,” H uffington Post called her “ a driving motivational force for many women,” and Essence claimed, “ her voice is the stuff of dreams.” In 2016, she made a conscious decision to return to her roots while composing the music that would comprise this latest offering. Recording in Los Angeles and Bay Area studios, she re-teamed with longtime friends and collaborators such as p roducer/keyboardist Mike Tiger, guitarist Errol Cooney, and Bedrock who all contributed to some of her earliest material. Now, the sensual first single “Secret” introduces D reamseeker. Produced by BedRock and AE, a ringing phone, shimmering keys, and a jazz-y beat give way to Goapele’s sexy delivery, yielding an artful bedroom anthem. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Goapele further devotes herself to activism, acting, and fashion. She’s partnered with Aids Healthcare Foundation in 2017, launched a lifestyle product line D reamseeker, and starred in a short film entitled W here Is Beauty. In the midst of everything, motherhood remains the highest priority. As all Goapele’s music has done, Dreamseeker will undoubtedly inspire.
