KIMBERLY ANYADIKE HONOREE In 2009, Kimberly Anyadike, an African American teenager of Nigerian descent made history and became the first African American female and the youngest person to fly an airplane on the 13-day flight from Compton, CA to Newport News, Virginia and back. Kimberly achieved this great height and set the record after just two years of pilot training through a special after-school program she enrolled in which is run by the Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum. Kimberly fell in love with planes and flying at the age of 12 while learning about the Tuskegee Airmen through the living exhibit at Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum inspired the then 12-year-old who had dreams of becoming a cardiovascular surgeon to achieve more and also become a certified pilot breaking records in America and for for all minorities, that they might hear about the muted legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, that they may be inspired to love out their dreams in spite of whatever obstacles they face. But also to bring light to the history of the Tuskegee Airmen, that they might be honored in their old age. Kimberly was immediately awarded by the County of Los Angeles and was invited to visit the California State Capitol by the then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. She was also I was recognized by former President Bill Clinton, and had a day named after me in Tuskegee, Alabama (July 2nd) recognized for her achievements as a young pilot and received the Tuskegee Airmen’s inaugural Young Aviators Award in Tuskegee Alabama in 2015. To add to all her greatness, Kimberly graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in Physiological Science and has been accepted into three medical schools and is excited to take her next big step this fall, towards becoming a flying physician. 12
NORAMAY CADENA HONOREE Noramay Cadena is the Cofounder and Managing Director of Make in LA, LA’s only hardware-focused accelerator in the San Fernando Valley. At Make in LA, she’s focused on developing principled leaders with solid product and business foundations and on developing partnerships that support Los Angeles’ entrepreneurship ecosystem. Cadena is also an advisor to the Latinas in STEM Foundation, an organization she co-founded in 2013 to inspire and empower Latinas to pursue and thrive in STEM fields Cadena holds an MBA, a Master’s in Engineering Systems and a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering – all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Over the last several years, Cadena has been a featured speaker in many platforms across the country including TEDx and the World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship – her talks and recognitions cover technical achievement, leadership, and overcoming obstacles. She’s also received various awards and recognitions including being named one of the top 26 women engineers to watch in 2016 by Business Insider, one of the top 20 Latinos in Tech by CNET in 2014 and receiving national awards by the Society of Women Engineers and Great Minds in STEM. Cadena is the eldest of three children raised by immigrant parents of Mexican descent in Los Angeles County’s San Fernando Valley. She currently resides in the Los Angeles area with her daughter and is actively involved in the community through startup mentorship, STEM outreach, professional development and volunteer work.

EMPOWHER STUDENT PROJECT COMPETITION Each eighth grade EmpowHer class was challenged to identify an issue within their community and develop a project proposal outlining how technology can be used to address the issue. The challenge was designed to foster innovation and develop 21st Century Skills – critical thinking, communication and collaboration. In completing the challenge, students had to: (1) use creativity and innovation; (2) think critically about the issues facing teen girls; (3) communicate with group members to complete assignments; and (4) work in groups to conduct research and develop a project proposal presentation. Each class presented their project proposal to a panel of judges. Based on judges’ score, the top three classes were selected present their project proposal at the Girls to Greatness Teen Summit.
