A HIGH COURT OF A DIFFERENT KIND Steven F. Macek is an attorney in the Boston area, doing mostly work in juvenile and probate court. But the sights of his true calling are set somewhere else, on a place few others can see. Steven is a medium who communicates with spirits, or those who have died and crossed over into the spiritual world. He does private readings as well as public readings in large settings. He has his own radio show and has traveled the country to assist people in communicating with their deceased loved ones and has been on major television shows to spread the word of his work. He loves what he does and does it well, receiving media coverage from coast to coast. We talked with Steven – who goes by the name that graces his website, Steven the Medium - about this most unusual career combination of law and mediumship. HM: What was your first indication you were onto something like this? SM: Honestly, I don’t recall any great signs as a youth of this ability, except not wanting to visit my dad’s grave at the cemetery. He died when I was eight, and when I was 17 or 18, my brother and mother would get upset when I didn’t want to go. In hindsight, I guess I felt a connection already with my father, and didn’t need to go to the cemetery. HM: But the ability you apparently already had to communicate with spirits lay dormant for years? SM: Yes, I really remained unaware of it for years, going to law school, setting up my own firm and having no idea about the spirit world until my husband (Elix Cintron) and I visited a medium in 2010, a venue with more than 100 people. I was the first person the medium came up to and she just said to me “You’re a medium and you’re not aware of it.” HM: Did you act on it right away? SM: No, it wasn’t until three years later when Elix signed me up for training. I just embraced the process, the training, loving it so much I wanted to learn more, do it better so I could do readings. I became a certified medium, past lives reader and a Reiki Master. HM: It’s really taken off since? SM: Definitely, from my first formal one-person reading in 2015 to a reading venue of 150 people this year. HM: You say ‘formal’ reading, was there a first non-formal one? 4 • HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY WEEKLY

SM: Yes, it was very interesting. We had a repairman, his name was Ted, come over to fix our garage door, and when I ran upstairs to get my wallet to pay him, I suddenly heard a voice telling me, “I’m his mom, so tell him I love him.” I started getting a message that started with the letter “A,” and ran back down to tell Ted who was stunned; his mother had died 40 years earlier. And her name was Angie. That experience is what motivated me to start doing professional readings. HM: Talk about your husband, Elix, has he been very supportive of you having an ability he doesn’t share? SM: Oh my God, yes, we’ve been together 26 years, we’re married, he’s from Puerto Rico and is a professional Executive Coach, helping so many people. How does he deal with me being a medium? Very nicely! And when it’s appropriate, he introduces me as a medium to his clients to connect them with spirit. I have a radio show, “Through the Static,” on WARA 1320AM in Massachusetts (it can be streamed online, Wednesdays, 5-6 p.m. EST), which recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Elix co-hosts with me and though he’s not a medium, our listeners are very receptive to him being on the show, they love him, and call him “Coach Elix!” HM: So you do readings on the radio show? SM: Yes, during the first 10 minutes of the one-hour show, we talk about what’s happened during the week and give listeners a chance to tune in, then I take calls and do readings. The most wonderful thing about the radio show is that the calls are continuous, they never stop, which I love. And I get to meet so many people through the phone and connect them with their loved ones. It’s just been amazing, and so rewarding. HM: Does being a medium and an attorney ever overlap? SM: Yes it does! Now when I’m in court, it’s a completely different perspective, like if there’s an attorney next to me, her mother might come through and say something like “Tell my daughter I love her.” In those instances I feel slightly conflicted because I have to work on the case, but it’s tempting to do a reading when Spirit is trying to come through. HM: Is it distracting? SM: No, not at all, I know what this is and what I’m supposed to do, I know this is my passion, and it’s an enhancement for my career, it helps me read people’s energy and allows me to see if they’re being truthful or not. It’s definitely helped me be a better attorney. HM: Has the legal profession taken note of the medium in their midst? SM: Yes! I’ve been featured in major press outlets, including the Boston Globe, but also the prestigious industry publication, Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly – a judge recommended me to the paper, and I was the first attorney/medium to be profiled there! Usually, the legal industry is very conservative, so it was quite a surprise and honor to be featured in the paper. HOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY WEEKLY •• 77
HM: Has it led to more medium work? SM: Yes, it has – but not in the court while it’s in session! I’ve read many court employees including assistant district attorneys, judges’ clerks and other staff. HM: What other publicity have you received? SM: It’s been wonderful, really, like reading host Michael Clayton, former NFL player, on his show, “Great Day Live Tampa,” reading Frank Coletta on “Coffee Break WJAR 10” in Providence – where I was born, I may add. And doing a Spirit Event at the Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida. It’s been a great ride, very fulfilling. HM: Ever do it randomly where, if we may drop a pun, the Spirit moves? SM: Yes, for example, being in a supermarket and reading the person next to me at the deli. But obviously, my passion, and I hesitate to call it work, is more formalized and rewarding such as doing fundraisers for animal rescue organizations, I love doing those. HM: To the uninitiated, frankly this may seem scary. Is it for you? SM: No, never. I’ve not had any negative or frightening commends in connecting with Spirit. I work from the highest energy, which is the white light, and every Spirit I connect with transmits positive messages. I so enjoy interacting with them. People often ask how I only get positive connections with Spirit and I say it all comes from love, truly, I think I’m an enthusiastic person who radiates positive energy, and Spirit is very receptive to that. HM: What lies ahead for Steven the Medium? SM: Well, I just finished my first CD, called “Through the Static: A Path to Spirit,” and I’m working on my memoir. HM: And, of course, reading Spirit live, on the air and at the deli. What’s your favorite way of connecting? SM: My favorite is in-person readings; the difference between those and phone readings is I feel a human connection, and can better see and read people’s emotions. The great thing about this passion is I get to feel people’s energies, auras, and see where they are emotionally. It’s a beautiful thing to see someone change in real time. Especially when someone is hanging onto grief or survivor’s guilt. Feeling those energies and auras change through me is the most rewarding aspect of what I do. HM: It’s a calling, a gift, right? SM: Right, but also a privilege and a true honor. The satisfaction is seeing the effect it has on people, whether they’re in grief or burdened somehow. Even to lessen that just a little by communicating with their deceased loved ones – that’s the most satisfying thing for me. Tatiana DeMaria The singer-songwriter on music, fans, and performing solo
By Alex A. Kecskes After fronting her celebrated punk-pop band TAT and touring with legendary artists and bands like Joan Jett, NOFX, and The Offspring, Tatiana DeMaria is breaking out in a new direction as a dynamic solo artist. With a passionately devoted following on both sides of the Atlantic, the Vans-Warped-Tour fan-favorite channels contemporary R&B in her latest indie singles, which include "Make Me Feel," "London Don't Lie," and "What It Is About You." Thanks for taking the time for this interview. How did music affect your life when you first started writing and performing? Tatiana DeMaria: When I was fourteen, I struggled with anxiety. But I had a passion for music and started playing guitar. Music was the only thing that relieved the pressure. It allowed me to breathe and reduce my anxiety. I felt I’d found the cure. And I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. I also started writing music. Everything I wrote had to feel the way music made me feel when I was listening to it and it gave me relief. In terms of bands or artists, who were some of your earliest influences? DeMaria: Michael Jackson, The Clash, NOFX, Green Day, Stiff Little Fingers, Tupac, Snoop Dog—I kind of went across the spectrum. For me, there are two kinds of music: good music and shit music. It depends on the person and how they feel. It’s a subjective thing. I love that today’s music is so accessible. When I was growing up, people would pick the music they liked and it would define them. Today, everyone listens to every kind of music. It’s rare to find people now who say I only listen to hip-hop or rock. And that’s the beauty of it—it’s just expressions across these mediums and we all feel the same thing.
10 • HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY WEEKLY
Something every artist dreams about—that first big break. How and when did it occur for you?
DeMaria: I found a lot of joy in playing at protests. I played my twelfth show to 18,000 people in a French arena where I’d grown up. It was with the Offspring. And it was a mind-blowing experience to be playing to such a big crowd early on in my career. We were supported by radio, but mainly, it was seeing and greeting fans and how the music had helped them. It was poignant to realize that my music was touching people in a way that music had touched me. I realized I’d reached a milestone, that my music was giving back in a way I’d hoped it would. I’ve seen artists seek out validation for their work. But I’ve also seen artists who seek out a connection with a similar experience with their fans. And I think I’ve fallen into that latter category, where I’ve felt something and gone through some pain. When you get through it, you want other people to get through it as well. Seeing people coming out the other side and relating to that experience is so touching. Singers-songwriters often change their style. How has your music changed in the last few years? DeMaria: From a public perspective, it’s changing a fair bit, but behind the scenes, I’ve always written in a variety of styles. It’s one reason why I put my new material under my name as opposed to my band’s name. I’d been making music in my band, TAT, but as a solo artist, I still write and produce the music. Going solo allowed me to go public with my various styles without tarnishing the band’s identity and the sounds that fans have grown to love. It’s an expression of who I am as a person. I can move between different styles more freely because it’s more of an artist as a whole than the sounds of a band representing one thing. It’s left me more space, challenging me to bring more honesty and an edge to the music without having to rely on heavy guitars or masking. And everything is a bit more naked for lack of a better word. I still work with TAT. It’s just separating things: this batch of songs will be in the TAT album and that batch will be solo. What do you love about the Vans-Warped-Tour? DeMaria: The camaraderie. It’s such a fun tour. There are so many bands and friends who’ve played it. You’re on tour for two months together. And we look out for each other. It’s like a training camp where we push each other to get out there in the 110-degree heat and go to work. We also do a lot of press and signings. And while we all have our own tour buses, we get together for barbeques every night. It’s a great environment where we connect, respect each other, and have a wicked time. You make lifelong friends. When you leave your family to tour, you need that stability, those grounding points. So when you’re on the road, you look for that connection. You spend most of your life with these people, so it’s important to love them and want to hang out with them. It helps to prepare you for that hour and a half when you’re on stage. Every night, you’re tested on what you’ve prepared your whole life for. So it’s important to have a good headspace and be well surrounded or you feel like a performing monkey. What have you learned – good and bad – about the music business?
DeMaria: It’s more of a platform to learn about yourself than it is about the business. It’s template-created and can get tricky because you’re marrying art and commerce. Those two things can clash. So can personalities. It’s the age-old argument: are you doing it for the money or the passion?

What I’ve learned over the years is how to juggle certain emotions, finding my center, my peace wherever I am and whomever I’m around. Essentially, it’s a training ground for your ego, your self-confidence, and your drive. You have to let a lot of things go and not get attached to them. You need to be in control of your emotions and deliver on stage no matter what’s going on in your life. It’s also learning to manage different elements of success—the ups, downs, and disappointments. It can be quite challenging on the human soul to go through so many different experiences in such a short time and interact with so many different energies. We’re often surprised by the self-discovery that occurs when you start to express and expose yourself. Once you put yourself out there, you’re bound to get things that reflect back to you. So it’s about accepting yourself. DeMaria: That’s something I’m passionate about for all people. I love seeing women today not having to fit ‘the mold.’ I think self-acceptance is huge for everyone. It’s at the root of self-esteem and I think it holds a lot of people back. In some respect, I think we all care about what other people think. So I would encourage people to express their vulnerabilities. And that’s a challenge for me as well—pushing myself to be more honest in my work. It’s important to be open and sharing no matter what level in life you’re at. And that’s what I hope to impart: to be open and experience the freedom people can have with themselves. Acoustic or plugged, what’s your favorite and why? DeMaria: I love playing unplugged with just a couple of people in the room. Stepping off stage, unplugged—I love that. But when the room gets a bit big, you don’t sink into your voice as much. You want everyone in the room to hear it. But when you’re on stage with a plugged acoustic guitar, you get to sink into the sound because you hear it back. You’re less in your head about the size of the room and the people there. The elusive creative process. Do you start with a melody or lyrics? DeMaria: It depends. You can be in the shower singing, find a melody, then struggle for weeks to put lyrics to it. Or both could happen at the same time. Then again, you could just sit down with lyrics and put a melody to it. I find it easier to put a melody to lyrics than lyrics to a melody I’ve already written. On that vein, how did your song “What It Is About You” take shape? DeMaria: I was going through something at the time and that song was an honest reflection of that. I’d returned from a tour and was in my home studio making beats. One thing led to another and that song ended up coming out of it. It was different, more influenced by Timberland than any kind of rock song or feeling. Any advice to young aspiring artists? DeMaria: Be honest and give it all you’ve got. If you’re a songwriter, focus on writing songs. You don’t need to do it all. You don’t need to go across the board. Choose the one thing that’s most important to you and go hard at it. REAL STREET FEST The Real 92.3’s first annual Real Street Fest was the premier event to be at this summer with their incredible, stacked line-up consisting of the hottest hip-hop artists in music. The Real 92.3 is notorious for being Los Angeles’s number one radio station, but now it can be known for throwing the number one festival is Los Angeles as well. The venue at the Honda Center in Anaheim made the perfect venue. It was surprisingly very spacious, and it was able to house two enormous stages, food trucks, and countless booths. There was also an arena that contained a car show, a barber shop, other vendors, and another stage where attendees could regularly see Big Boy’s Neighborhood. The arena was a great place for festival goers to grab food, sit down in a large air-conditioned building, see Big Boy interview their favorite artists, and use something that is rare at music festivals- real restrooms!
THE REAL 92.3
Big Boy interviewing celebrities right in front of a live audience full of festival goers was an experience I’ve never seen before. Megan the Stallion caught up with Big Boy’s Neighborhood shortly after her incredible performance. She is known for starting the biggest mood/trend of the summer, which is Hot Girl Summer. The message of Hot Girl Summer has inspired many girls to live their best life and just have a great time over the summer. Fans screamed as she rapped some of her biggest hits and showcased her dance moves. Her remarkable energy continued into the interview as she gave women her empowering message. Megan was even nice enough to invite some girls onstage to dance with her. Fans constantly praised and applauded her for giving clever and down-to-earth responses. There were also interviews with several other rappers, such as Saweetie and Cardi B that Big Boy’s neighborhood made available on the radio station. It was incredible that Real Street Fest interviewed and included so many female rappers in the festival. Female rappers are a strong force in the rap gang and as usual, Real 92.3 are the frontrunners by inviting so many of them in a festival. There were high energy performances from up-and-coming artists like Lil Baby, Blueface, Saweetie, Flipp Dinero, and Trippie Redd. The crowd went absolutely crazy for hip-hop and rap royalty like Meek Mill, Migos, Cardi B, Rae Sremmurd, and Future. But at the end of the day, the most epic thing that happened at Real Street Fest was the legendary return of rapper, A$AP Rocky. This was his first ever performance after being wrongly imprisoned in Sweden for weeks. He was the closing headliner for the entire festival. The moment he showed up on stage, the crowd roared with excitement and happiness. Every single person at the festival had eyes A$AP Rocky. He performed some of his most popular songs, such as “Praise the Lord” and several hits from his debut album “Live.Love.ASAP”. The crowd went absolutely crazy when he rapped songs, such as “Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye”, from his most loved album, “At. Long.Last.ASAP”. A$AP Rocky also brought surprise guests, such as Tyler the Creator and YG, to get the crowd more hype. It was very apparent that everyone was having the time of their lives at the Real Street Fest. He’d moved countries before he could walk, and now Phillip Taylor’s globetrotting life has brought him to Bali as Executive Chef of Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay. 20 • HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay Appoints Phillip Taylor as Executive Chef Oversees culinary operations resort-wide including flagship Sundara Beach-Club At just 32 years old, he is one of the youngest executive chefs in the Four Seasons hotel company globally. “Phillip has achieved tremendous success in his career so far, and we are delighted to have him on board,” says Uday Rao, General Manager of Four Seasons Resorts Bali. “With a background in classic French technique and Asian flavours, along with experience as chef de cuisine at notable Michelin-starred restaurants and specialty charcoal grills, he is the perfect fit to enhance our culinary offering.” Phillip’s touch is already evident with the relaunch of the modern Asian dinner menu at Sundara Beach-Club & Restaurant. Guest favourites were kept, while he has introduced new temptations including blue cheese ice-cream with guava compote; a fresh-from-the-boat seafood and sashimi platter on ice with bamboo lobster, flower crab, king prawns, wild salmon, yellow fin tuna and snapper; and a charcoal grill selection including a 1.25 kg angus tomahawk steak. Born in New Zealand and brought up in Australia, Phillip started cooking on the night shift at a small but busy café on Melbourne’s Lygon Street to support himself while studying pharmacy at university. He loved the camaraderie in the kitchen, the creative abandon of his early mentor, and the stories behind different dishes. He realised he wanted to be a professional chef, but completed his pharmacy degree before enrolling at culinary school. “Food tells a story about people and culture,” Phillip says. “Like a person, it has character, individuality, history, pride and serves a very important purpose. My biggest influence comes from travelling around the globe and exploring local cuisine with different chefs, and Bali is a melting pot of talent and ingredients. It’s hard to imagine I could be selling prescription drugs right now instead.” He has spent the last 10 years criss-crossing the globe, each new destination opening up exciting new explorations into flavours, textures and history. The journey has led him to work under and alongside inspiring mentors, and to explore different cultures through their food. Phillip oversees the oceanfront resort’s five outlets including the signature Sundara; Taman Wantilan’s international buffet with nine live action cooking stations; Jala Cooking Academy and Balinese dinner venue; poolside café and in-villa dining. He is also responsible for all banquet operations for weddings and corporate groups. HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY • 21

Inspired by Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America, this new drama follows the institution’s newest medical director (The Blacklist’s Ryan Eggold) as he sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. Brilliant and charming, Eggold’s rogue medical director disrupts the status quo and proves he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into an understaffed, underfunded and under-appreciated hospital. When the series returns for Season 2, we’ll get to dig deeper into Conrad’s (Matt Czuchry) rift with his father and whether these two can work in the same hospital without burning the place down. Jenna Dewan also joins the cast, and we already know she’s shooting some serious flirty eyes at Devon (Manish Dayal) – could that lead to more? The thing we need most, though, is for Conrad and Nic (Emily Van Camp) to stop flirting and making out in private rooms and just make a firm decision about whether or not they are back together.

ANIME EXPO 2019 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY • 31
ANIME EXPO 2019
The moment you step into Anime Expo, you see a unique and massive community of over 110,000 people that come alive- all united by their love of anime. Throughout the Los Angeles Convention Center, you see people dressed elaborate costumes and cosplay surrounded by photographers and attendees who are amazed by their costumes. To these attendees, it feels as if their favorite anime character has come to life right before their very eyes. We were also able to speak to one of the musical performers at Anime Expo, named Yukari Koseki (aka Yuyu). She was dressed at Mei Raiden from Honkai Impact 3rd, which is a video action game. She was standing in front of a large 3-D art installation with girls who were all dressed up as characters from the video game. She told us that this was her first Anime Expo. Her friends were always talking about the event, but she never had a chance to attend it. We asked her: “What are your reasons for coming to Anime Expo?” “I have a performance where I get to dance and cosplay while representing this video game.” As a professional dancer, this was a huge opportunity for Yuyu and other girls. Besides dancing, you could also see that she really liked getting her picture taken. Yuyu and other characters were having their photo op for at least an hour. They had some of the most popular costumes at the expo. One group of cosplayers and performers came all the way from Vancouver, Canada and they call themselves Seishun Youth Academy. Their mission is to bring Japanese culture into Canada and spread the message of friendship wherever they go. They sing original sons in English and Japanese and the group even got a chance to perform at Anime Expo! One attendee dressed as Dr. Faust from the anime, Guilty Gear, says that this is his 7th year at Anime Expo. He glowed with excitement as we approached him to take pictures. Since this was his 7th Anime Expo, I asked him what kept bringing him back. “The attention, I love the attention,” he immediately replied. His costume was very large and detailed. Like many attendees, his costume was custom made

and took months of preparation. This was not just something you can just find at Party City. He’s not the only one who loves the attention. There are hundreds of people near the Anime Expo entrance that live for the attention. If someone asks for a picture, they are always ready to strike a pose. Here, at Anime Expo, the cosplayers are the stars. People follow them with cameras and ask them questions. It’s a place where cosplayers can shine and embody someone that they truly admire. Other than the cosplayers, people from all over the world come for the major premieres, fashion shows, concerts, and many other exciting events. From the time the doors open until closing, there is literally always something to do. One event that Hollywood Weekly got to experience was the international debut of Yoshihiro Ike: Anime Soundtrack World. Yoshihiro was welcomed to Anime Expo as a guest of honor. He is known worldwide as an extremely talented Japanese composer that makes music for video games, animes, and television shows. There were over 50 musicians that played to world recognized melodies composed by Yoshihiro from famous animes and video games. One of his most recognized works is the music from AIBOU: Tokyo Detective Duo, which is a well-received Japanese animated detective show that has been on air for 19 years. Attendees watched his performance in awe as they listened to Yoshihiro’s very first performance for his soundtrack. For everyone in the auditorium, it was a very special and beautiful performance. One of the busiest and popular parts of Anime Expo was the Exhibit Hall. Here, attendees are able to buy Anime Expo exclusive merchandise including video games, music, cosplay and costumes, manga (comics), accessories, and much more from booths. You will often see attendees crowding around the booths trying to get the latest and most popular gear. Anime Expo is also a place where artists shine. Inside the Los Angeles Convention Center, there was a place called the Artist Alley where over 500 artists show off their anime-inspired work. Anime Expo claims that this is the largest amount of amateur and semi-professional artists in any convention center. Artists were able to showcase and sale their work to attendees. Anime Expo is also a place where attendees can dance, sing, and just have a good time. Many attendees like to go to karaoke, where they sing the theme songs of their favorite anime shows. One of the fan favorites is the Pokémon theme song, the whole crowd joins in the sing along. Attendees are also able to get tickets to the Anime Expo Masquerade. At the Masquerade, there are professional cosplayers and performances. There is even a competition for the best dressed and the best performance, and the winner gets an enormous cash prize. The most fan inclusive event has to be the Anime Music Video (AMV) Competition that contains a compilation of fan sent video submissions. This has been a long-standing Anime Expo tradition, in which anyone can submit a video. The fan video with the most entertaining music video is chosen by a judge and the audience and crowned the winner. Hollywood Weekly truly enjoyed our time at Anime Expo and we cannot wait to come back next year. Whether you go to Anime Expo for cosplayers, video games, exclusive merchandise, or world premieres - you have an unforgettable time at Anime Expo.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE LBC At the end of July 2019, Once Upon a Time in the LBC, returned to Long Beach and had extraordinary hip-hop, rap, and R&B performances from legends and up-andcoming artists alike. The highly anticipated festival took place on both July 27 and 28 with both dates completely sold out. The festival took place at Queen Mary Park in Long Beach, which was one of the most beautiful venues that I have ever attended. Festival attendees could see the skyline of Long Beach during performances, setting up a warm, breezy atmosphere. Long Beach Park was very open and easily held the massive crowd of fans. The two stages at the festival were named in honor of Nipsey Hussle: The Marathon and The Hussle stage. Looking around, there were many people laughing, dancing, and having a good time singing and rapping to their favorite songs. Many people showed up for performances of the newer rap generation, like Blueface and Kamaiyah, but the biggest crowds and most respect went to the OGs, like for Snoop Dog, DMX and Warren G. The crowds were also awed by some of their old school R&B favorites, like Ginuwine and Jon B. All of them giving phenomenal and unforgettable performances. Nipsey Hussle’s legacy was strongly felt throughout the venue. Throughout the day, you could hear DJs spinning some of Nipsey’s fan favorites, like Racks in the Middle and Dedication. An incredible number of artists also dedicated songs and sets to the late Nipsey Hussle, including Bones Thugs-n-Harmony, YG, and the Game. Many artists and the attendees became emotional during songs and tributes. YG gave one of the most touching and memorable Nipsey Hussle’s tributes. He wore a shirt with an image of Nipsey and wings letting the crowd know that Nispey is always with him. Before his performance, YG played a short documentary clip of Nipsey that briefly showed how Nipsey influenced this generation. YG also performed his collaborations with Nipsey, had the crowd give a moment of silence, and encouraged the crowd to chant Nipsey’s name throughout his set. There was a strong sense of respect of Nipsey’s legacy throughout the crowd. The strong emotions associated with the tribute carried on to The Game and Snoop Dogg’s sets. Nipsey wasn’t the only legend honored during the festival. Snoop Dogg and various other performers were also sure to pay their respects to other celebrated rappers that heavily influenced the rap game, such as Eazy E, Notorious B.I.G, and Tupac Shakur. Although there were some moments of sadness among the crowd for the deceased legends, the festival was also a big celebration for their legacies and a fun time. Hollywood Weekly is excited what magic Once Upon a Time in the LBC will bring next year.

Bonnie and Clyde. The Depression-era bank robbers are an infamous duo in American history. Thirty years after their crime spree, the actress selected to portray “Bonnie” opposite Warren Beatty’s “Clyde” was a Hollywood newcomer named Faye Dunaway. A graduate of Boston University with a degree in theatre, Dunaway had appeared in a number of Broadway hits. But Dunaway had little experience on the silver screen, making her a gamble for a leading role. Producer and lead actor Warren Beatty opted to roll the dice with Faye Dunaway to depict his outlaw counterpart. The decision to cast Dunaway paid-off as Bonnie and Clyde was nominated for ten Academy Awards in 1967, including Best Picture and Dunaway as Best Actress. Dunaway would later credit the film for turning her into a star. After Bonnie and Clyde, Faye Dunaway explored her acting artistry in several more Hollywood hits, including The Thomas Crown Affair opposite Steve McQueen and The Arrangement opposite Kirk Douglas. Several years later, Dunaway played a ruthless television executive in a satire named Network, earning the Academy Award for Best Actress. Yet, in the midst of her Hollywood success, Faye Dunaway never lost her passion for the stage. She frequently opted for stage roles over the Hollywood big screen, claiming that the stage was more challenging than film. Her lifelong mentor came from the stage, Harvard Professor William Alfred, who wrote Hogan’s Goat, an off-Broadway production starring Dunaway that was later turned into a film with Dunaway maintaining her role. Throughout her theatrical endeavors, Faye Dunaway has been known for her fiery temperament, famously clashing with directors Otto Preminger and Roman Polanski. Still, even those who have been on the receiving end of Dunaway’s biting tongue admit that her demanding nature is driven by her passion for the art of acting. Dunaway later addressed her reputation in her autobiography, Looking for Gatsby, penning that, “I want to get it right. The fact is a man can be difficult and people applaud him for trying to do a superior job… And a woman can try to get it right and she’s ‘a pain in the ass.’” Faye Dunaway succeeding in getting it right, both on the theatre stage as well as the feature film screen. Whether or not she was truly “a pain in the ass” remains unknown, but Faye Dunaway would wear the moniker proudly. 38 • HOLLYWOOD MONTHLY 38 • HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
