A LETTER FROM
THE EDITOR
In this edition, we are pleased to answer the question, “What ever happened to the Grammy Award winning group called, Tavares?” Do you remember the chart toping song “Penny For Your Thoughts?” While the fans of Tavares worldwide enjoyed the obvious success of the group, Feliciano Tavares, a.k.a. Butch was in a creative limbo after writing PRATHER JACKSON the title song for their third album. We are honored to answer that question with our one-on-one conversation and exclusive cover story. As we prepare for Christmas and excitedly anticipate the start of the New Year, we are reminded of the many things that we each share in-common, irrespective of politics. When I think about the past US Presidential election, I am reminded that when people feel disenfranchised they may not outwardly express their dismay, but they feel pain. I think we can all learn from this and show a little more empathy to our fellow brother and sister, and not just during the holidays. I also wish to acknowledge and thank philanthropist and Queen of Beverly Hills, Ms. Munni Irone for her outstanding work and her display of empathy to the world thru her Arts for Peace Awards. I am delighted to announce that our publication recently received acknowledgement from the 2016 Arts for Peace Awards, held recently in Beverly Hills, for Hollywood Weekly Magazine’s contributions to the media. As a recipient of the 2016 Arts for Peace Award for Media and the 2014 Nollywood & African Film Critics Award (NAFCA), it suggests that Hollywood Weekly Magazine is doing our job and gaining global respect.

FELICIANO “BUTCH” TAVARES: FROM NUMBER ONE TO NUMBER NONE UNTIL NOW
O Editor’s note:
deteriorated.
ver the past two decades Tavares fans wondered, “What ever happened to them”, and why did they disappear while their number one hit single, “Penny For Your Thoughts” was at the top of the charts with numerous prestigious accolades, not to mention receiving a Grammy? A story of betrayal and control was brewing but never revealed until now. While fans of Tavares worldwide enjoyed the obvious success of the group, Feliciano Tavares, a.k.a. Butch, was in creative limbo.
But Feliciano “Butch” Tavares never displayed what he called a slave mentality. He was committed to moving on once the decision was made to leave Capitol Records, while still at the top of their game. Despite those facts, his decision altered the destiny of one of the most successful groups of the period. The decision to leave created adverse consequences for everyone. However, “Butch” was never one to be daunted by trials or rest on his laurels.
After writing the title song for their third album “IN THE CITY” it appeared that he was well on his way to becoming the writer and artist. But his philosophical approach didn’t fit the image that the company had in mind for the group. Butch, found himself in a creative funk of sorts and wondered if this was the end of his dream. Tension began to build. He felt his ambition to become that true Artist, not only the singer of songs, but the writer of them as well, were being somewhat ignored. But that was not the only issue. He felt at the time that the money the group was making was being controlled by management and tried to address the issue, but with no results. In a bold move, he decided to take matters into his own hands. He brought-in his accountant to audit the group’s books. It was intended to bring attention to his concerns, and he wants to be clear. In no way was he suggesting that there was any misappropriation of funds; he just didn’t like the way the money was being handled! And from that point on, his relationship with management
HIS DECISION TO LEAVE THE LABEL WHILE AT THE HEIGHT OF THEIR SUCCESS DESPITE THE FACT THAT HIS DECISION ALTERED THE DESTINY OF ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL GROUPS OF THAT PERIOD HIS INTEGRITY UNFORTUNATELY MANIFESTED ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES FOR ALL INVOLVED.
Today, he and his brothers Pooch, and Victor, who by the way was the lead singer to their very first hit “Check it Out,” have new and relevant music being played on the airways written and that was produced by Butch and his friends. He is already feeling the love and support of the fans (old and new ) that wondered what in the world happened to Tavares and what is Tavares Now doing? This is the true story of Feliciano “Butch” Tavares: From One To Number None, UNTIL NOW. The group formed from 5 brothers, and achieved an American dream. Erected from Cape Verdean roots, their musical heritage led them to the status as one of the greatest R & B groups of all time. Along the way, they worked with major recording artists such as Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager, as well as Freda Payne, all who had hit records. They worked with top groups including the Temptations, Ike and Tina Turner and the O’Jays, and many others. Their career reached stellar heights during the 70’s and 80’s. They rode the crest of success resulting in 8 singles on Billboard’s Top 40, 12 singles on the R & B Top 10 chart, 3 dance chart hits, 10 hit albums, and won a Grammy for their recording of “More than a Woman.” On the soundtrack of the ‘Saturday Night Fever, ” the movie starring John Travolta, garnered more than 28 million sales, and was recently certified as 15 times Platinum. This led to world tours as headliners, dozens of appearances on major television and radio shows as musical guests, notably on Soul Train hosted by Don Cornelius, and induction into the Cape Verdean heritage Hall of Fame 2006.
By Carmelita Pittman After such an impressive record, and after two decades their fans have wondered why did they disappear? According to Butch, there were a collection of circumstances that explains what happened. As he recalls, when he and his brothers were first introduced to Capitol Records they were given a tour of the building. Many stars such as Frank Sinatra, and of course, the Beetles had a floor named after them. Yet, the very recording artist most responsible for that building being built, namely Nat King Cole, an extremely talented singer and musician of African descent, remained noticeably missing from the roster. Outspoken, Butch was quick to ask, “Where is the floor named after Nat King Cole?” This

got their record executives attention, all while at the height of their success. Although his decision altered the destiny of one of the most successful groups of that period, his integrity, unfortunately, created adverse consequences.
The group decided to follow his lead and eventually signed with R.C.A Records. The group rose to the occasion hitting the charts running with their first number one single called “Deeper In Love” from the album appropriately called “New Directions.” Written and produced by Leon Sylvers from the popular family group called “The Sylvers” it featured Butch on lead vocals. The follow up song was called “Penny For Your Thoughts.” It was written by Kenny Nolan and produced by J. Center with Butch and his brother Pooch commandingly singing the lead vocals. It was nominated for a Grammy. And just when you thought that it couldn’t get any better the company released their third chart topping single entitled “Words And Music.” The group also expanded their horizons releasing their first video. So with all the success the group was enjoying, Butch couldn’t see any reason not to approach the label regarding his music as he as almost certain that his destiny had finally arrived, but

But Butch is not the type of individual to be put in a box, and another situation emerged along the way. Although the other brothers were content with receiving a weekly per diem he wasn’t. Butch didn’t like the way the money was being handled. He wanted it known, as far as he was concerned, he didn’t need anyone to handle his affairs. After he finished a show, like in the past, he wanted his share of the profits like before they had management. But to his dismay, nothing changed. So, in a bold move, he took matters into his own hands and brought in an accountant to examine the books. Unfortunately, there were executives at the record label who took offense, but Butch didn’t care. He wasn’t suggesting that there had been any misappropriation of funds, only that he didn’t like the way the things were being handled. He informed management that he didn’t want a partnership and that he was totally capable of handling his financial affairs, but again no change. Butch demanded his money! But to no avail. Butch then informed the group that he was leaving Capitol, because of the unresolved issues. He didn’t see the opportunity for growth musically and that to him was unacceptable.

him from further success, by those with their own agenda. He questioned, “was it because he and his brother Pooch sang lead and management weren’t exactly seeing eye to eye? Perhaps if their song crossed-over it would have given Butch too much power considering the internal struggle that was going on? Perhaps the label was not ready for him to achieve the recognition that had been bestowed to Hall and Oates? “With that success I then approached the gentleman, and I use the word “loosely,” that was the head of A & R, to listen to what I was writing. I was very confident that I was finally going to realize my long awaited dream. But to put it bluntly, he said that he did not want to hear music that I had written. I should be satisfied with our current success. Then I reminded him of the deal that we struck from the inception and he said, “WELL, I LIED. I should have put it in writing. I don’t want to hear it.” With that being said, Butch restrained himself, and stormed out. Butch told him “If God keeps me alive you’ll hear from me again”, as he left. “Who leaves with 3 number 1 hits? You have to believe in something higher than yourself.” He placed his faith in the higher power most of us call God. He did not know where his actions would lead to but his beliefs were not to be compromised. However noble that was, it led to his brothers being dismissed from R.C.A., as well.
it wasn’t to be. Butch, however, is never being one to shrink in the face of adversity and he continued to dream. He also wondered how their hit, “She’s Gone” written by Daryl Hall & John Oates from their album, “Abandoned Luncheonette” released in 1973 but covered by Tavares in 1974, suspiciously did not cross over to the pop charts! Hall and Oates, seeing Tavares’s failed attempt to cross over, enjoyed much more than success, and they become pop icons. He thought perhaps his militant stance speaking out on issues of the day involving social and political consciousness might have prevented the
Yet Butch recalls early memories of being favored as a youngster with his brother Ralph and Pooch which drew envy from some of his siblings. He references Joseph and the coat of many color’s from the Biblical story. In the Biblical story the brothers were envious and deceived Joseph and sold him into slavery, yet he rose to the most prominent position in Egypt and actually rescued his brothers and family from the famine. His father, who loved him rejoiced after reuniting with him and the brothers, were forgiven and blessed with land and wealth. He talks of his youth and his unfair treatment of one of his brothers. After his admittance of wrong doing to that brother, the two brothers resolved their issues. They are now working together and both are actually involved with the new music that’s out now. He and Pooch expressed their support for their brother. “After almost losing Pooch to an serious illness a few years ago, it makes it even more gratifying to be able to have him still with us. I’m feeling so blessed to sing and share another lead vocal with him. It means the world to me.” Pooch and Victor signed to Butch’s newly formed Record Label called “Ear Candy Record Label. Feliciano “Flash” Tavares, is a father of the 7 boys, John, Ralph, Arthur (“Pooch), Antone,( ‘Chubby”), Victor , Perry Lee (“Tiny”) and Feliciano Jr. Although Butch left the R.C.A. label he is now back on the scene forming the New Tavares with his two brothers, Arthur “Pooch” and Victor. Having been on the roller coaster of life, he stayed true to his childhood dreams and belief in God. He says,” a true artist is one who sometimes eats chicken, but HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY 9

Butch responded by saying, “ we’ll start to sing the song and if you don’t like it we’ll stop and sing any song you want to hear.”
He continues, “to be quite honest, you couldn’t blame them they had paid to hear what was familiar to them.” But I’d come back with a glare when Butch began to sing the song the audience stood on To my friends I’m loyal their feet from beginning to end. DR. SEUSS MUSEUM Progress Continuing on Museum Honoring Dr. Seuss in Springfield, MA First Museum to Honor Theodor Geisel is Slated to Open in 2017
THEODOR SEUSS GEISEL
In the senior yearbook for 1920/1921, Ted’s fellow classmates voted him both Class Artist and Class Wit. The early works that Ted produced in high school certainly suggest how he would have earned these titles. Educator Edwin “Red” Smith, who taught at Central High School and was a graduate of Dartmouth College, recognized Ted’s talent and was the first teacher to make Ted consider writing as a career. After graduating from Springfield’s Central High School in the spring of 1921, Ted went on to attend nearby Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where he continued to develop his writing and artistic skills.

The Springfield Museums continue to make great strides toward opening the world’s first museum honoring Theodor Seuss Geisel, who was born and raised in Springfield, MA. The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum is slated to open in June of 2017, and will include interactive displays featuring familiar Seuss characters, exhibits of familyowned objects and memorabilia, and a re-creation of Ted Geisel’s artist studio, among other highlights. Museum officials are already planning for a large-scale opening celebration, and are actively working with city officials and community organizations on ideas for welcoming Dr. Seuss fans to Springfield for this momentous occasion. The timing of the opening will coincide with the 15th anniversary of the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, which opened on the Museums’ Quadrangle in June 2002 and features statues of Ted Geisel’s most famous creations, including one of Ted himself at his
drawing table. Next year also marks the 80th anniversary of Ted Geisel’s first work of children’s literature, And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street, which is set here in Ted Geisel’s hometown. The real-life Mulberry Street is located only a few blocks from the Museums’ campus. Work is underway to convert the historic William Pynchon Memorial Building, formerly the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum, into The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum. The Cultural Facilities Fund of the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the State of Massachusetts have funded restoration of the building’s exterior, including a new patio and much-needed repairs to the roof and windows. Last month, a large whimsically-shaped archway was also unveiled, giving the museum building an appropriately “Seussian” entrance. Conception and fabrication of the first floor interactive spaces is also well underway, with exhibit designers

developing stations featuring beloved Seuss characters like The Cat in the Hat, Horton, and The Lorax. The first level will have a decidedly children’s museum feel, with visitors allowed to take an interactive tour of the many Springfield sights that were such a major part of Ted Geisel’s childhood. Rhyming and word play are major elements in these spaces, with opportunities for parents and kids to explore new sounds and vocabulary, invent stories, and engage in activities that encourage teamwork and creative thinking. Museum staff has also been busy cataloging the many new objects donated to the new museum by Ted Geisel’s stepdaughters, Lark Grey Dimond-Cates and Leagrey Dimond. Items from Ted’s drawing studio, including the desk where he created his most memorable characters, will be displayed as part of a full re-creation of his workspace. Other featured objects will include Ted’s collection of whimsical bowties, as well as original drawings and sculptures created by Geisel, most of which have never been seen by the public. An exciting new addition to the Museum plan is The Cat’s Corner, a Dr. Seuss-themed resource space on the lower level of the Museum, which will serve as the site of educational, art-making and literacy-based activities for both school groups and the general public. “We’re very excited to see the progress on the museum project thus far, particularly with regard to the design of

the activity spaces that will allow children and families to interact with familiar Dr. Seuss characters in an entirely new way,” said Susan Brandt, President of Dr. Seuss Enterprises. Kay Simpson, President of the Springfield Museums, commented “The project has really started to pick up steam, and you can truly sense the enthusiasm and anticipation for the new museum from visitors and local residents.” That sense of excitement has spurred a wave of donations, with over $5.7 million of the $7 million goal already raised from a combination of individuals, corporations, and foundations. One of the earliest donations to the project came in the form of pennies collected by Springfield schoolchildren in 2013, a testament to the civic pride felt by local residents for their hometown hero. Online donations are now being accepted through a new website titled SeussInSpringfield.org, which also provides information about Ted Geisel’s early years in Springfield through timelines and rare family photographs. The site also includes conceptual drawings of the first floor interactive spaces, an interactive map of the Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden, and quizzes for Seuss fans of all ages to test their knowledge of Seuss trivia. “The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum will be a major tourist attraction for the city and region, and we’re very much looking forward to inviting fans of Dr. Seuss to Springfield for this momentous occasion next June,” commented Simpson.

(TOMBSTONE) and Batman (BATMAN), inhabits the spirit of legendary American figure Mark Twain in this film of his acclaimed one-man show. A master of reinvention, Kilmer transforms himself into the “First American,” Mark Twain, in a comedic and moving performance that is both contemporary and reflective. The piece is based on the life of the man, Samuel Clemens, and of course his writings as Mark Twain. From his thoughts on politics (including his famous disdain for the U.S. Congress), to his family and ultimately his faith and God, Twain spins a series of yarns with his timeless satire and incomparable wit.

EDITOR’S NOTE:
EDITOR’S NOTE: The celebrated one-man show “Colorstruck” now in its 10th year, uses comedy, drama, music, visuals, and spoken word to examine race in America, and the need for more diversity and inclusion. After each performance audience members of all races, ages, genders and religions, engage in constructive dialogue regarding the issues raised in “Colorstruck” to help bridge the widening racial divide that exists in America today. “Colorstruck’s” motto is: There is only one race, the human race. Mr. Donald Lacy is also the founder of a special organization the LoveLife Foundation, which he created for his beloved daughter, LoEshe’ Lacy. The LoveLife Foundation trains youth in media and performing arts and to use those tools to speak out against violence. The work of the LoveLife Foundation was proclaimed from the floor of the United States Congress in 2000. I recently sat down with Mr. Donald Lacy, writer, producer and performer of “Colorstruck”, and founder of the Lovelife Foundation, to discuss a wide range of topics including his views of social empowerment in the wake of the recent US Presidential election.
CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED ONE-MAN SHOW
COLORSTRUCK” “ADDRESSES SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN AN ENTERTAINING WAY HW: Welcome back Mr. Lacy. What’s been going on since we last spoke? DONALD LACY: Thanks for having me back. Wow, so much has happened since we last spoke. This summer I had the pleasure of acting in Cal Shakes’ production of “Fences”, directed by the fabulous Raelle Myrick-Hodges. It was a great experience to play such a wonderful character that the great August Wilson created. As you mentioned, I am the producer/ performer of “Colorstuck” which is still going strong, now in its 10th year. People may not know that this is the 50th year since the founding of the Black Panther Party. Beginning in October of this year, I did 3 performances with some of the Black Panther Party members present in the audience. I did this to pay respect to the Party, but also because of the issues which led to their formation, which were the innocent killings of mostly unarmed young Black men, women, and children. This is pretty much what we are still dealing with now, which is ironically tragic, although it’s hard to say if the problem has gotten worse. Today, with all of the devices, cameras and cell phones, we can document what’s happening. Emory Douglas was one of the “Colorstruck” post-show discussion panelists. He is the artist who did all the cartoons for the Black Panther newspaper. John Burris was also one of the 26 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
panelists. Mr. Burris is one of the leading attorneys in the world, representing families whose loved ones have been killed by law enforcement. I am looking forward to my next step, which would be to bring “Colorstruck” to Los Angeles. As a matter of fact after our interview, I am meeting with a theater owner here in Los Angeles to talk about bringing “Colorstruck” to his venue. I am also exploring options to take the show to New York. The timing could not be more perfect then it is right now. I know it may not be comfortable, but conversations about race are necessary and need to be had. I would like to eventually get “Colorstruck” on Netflix or some similar platform, particularly with the election of our next President. It’s been in the news that people with Muslims have been attacked because they were wearing a Muslim headdress. In fact since the election of Trump, there have been 700 attacks on minorities in the United States. The election of Trump underscores the climate of hate and division that is so prevalent in America today. This climate has a history rooted in institutionalized racism, so it’s important we acknowledge and understand the history so we can hopefully move forward. HW: Speaking of institutionalized racism, which we know exists in our society, how do you suggest that we move forward?
DONALD LACY: My father use to always say the only way to work out a problem is to talk about it. Now more than ever we have to talk. To me, that is the beauty of “Colorstruck”: perfect strangers having dialogue about our differences and how we can move past them. Since the election, I have had random people, mostly white, just approach me and ask, “Can I talk to you?” One thing that we all can do is to hold all politicians accountable. Trump makes some of the most racist, ridiculous statements, which is stirring up hate in the very country he has been elected to govern. It is up to the people to hold him accountable for his words and his actions. HW: And speaking of the President-elect, what would you say to him if you were provided with the opportunity? DONALD LACY: Why would you want to deport 11 million immigrants? Melania Trump, your wife is an immigrant. I would have a lot of questions. Donald Trump is a cold-calculating individual. I think they sat around and asked, “Who is the most disenfranchised group of people that doesn’t vote?” They concluded poor whites in some rural communities. And they put a lot of homophobic, xenophobic, racist rhetoric out there and I would guess, although I do not know this as fact, it probably galvanized their support and more of them registered than ever before. Then let’s demonize Mrs. Clinton. First of all, she was cleared of the email scandal but wait, they find sensitive, top-secret documents in Anthony Wieners server, of all places, a week before the election, then have news reports leaked that she was going to be indicted, but then say it was nothing. Unfortunately by then the damage had already been done. The average American is not going to pay attention to the fact that she was cleared. They just see her as if she were a criminal. And a record number of black people who voted for Obama didn’t vote for Hilary. They just didn’t vote. 29 percent of the Latino vote went to Trump. It’s incredible that anyone black or brown would vote for Trump. Voting for Trump, to me it’s like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders. Now that he’s in, we can protest all we want, but I say get over it. More than just protest, what are we going to do to organize? We should demand and hold him accountable. HW: Okay, now moving forward, tell me about your plans for 2017. Donald Lacy: Wow, I am excited. I have 2 film projects that I’m working on. First in line is “Romeo N’ Juliet Gettin’ Busy.” Now more than ever this piece is relevant. It’s loosely based upon Shakespeare’s story; it deals with the issue of race. The notion of race is a man-made concept. This movie is actually very funny, and highly entertaining with great music. The bottom line is we have to learn to get along with each other. The second film is: “LoveLife” which is the
true story of the extraordinary birth of my first born child LoEshe’ (Pronounced: Lo-E-Shay) who I delivered in a moving car on the freeway while I was driving. My daughter was murdered on October 20, 1997, an innocent victim to a shooting across the street from her high school. I started the LoveLife Foundation in her honor and have received national attention for our work. The movie details the ups and downs of a roller coaster ride that got me invited to the White House and proclaimed from the United States floor of Congress. This film will hopefully serve to inspire thousands of others who have lost children to violence to leave a legacy in the name of their deceased loved ones. I am amazed at all the good things that have come out of such a horribly tragic incident. The most lasting legacy for my daughter is that as of April 5, 2016, the Oakland City Council, by a vote of 5-4, passed a resolution declaring “Love Life” as the official motto for the City of Oakland. In 2017 all signs that say “Entering Oakland” will have the words Love Life on them to honor LoEshe’ and all victims of violence. It was a long hard fight but the night it was passed hundreds of Oakland citizens showed up in the City Council chambers to voice their overwhelming support for the initiative. I also have a television pilot that I am working on entitled “Under Siege” which deals with family members who are survivors of violence who band together to make a difference in the names of their murdered loved ones. It is loosely based on parents I have met during my journey who are amazing people who do incredible work. It is a gritty story that will show the beauty and resilience of the human spirit. It is powerful television that I feel strongly will make a significant impact. One of my dearest friends and creative collaborators is actor/ comedienne Ms. Laura Hayes who is one of the Queens of Comedy. She and I developed a reality show called Escorts 2 Executives which reforms former prostitutes and gets them ready for white collar jobs in the work force. Laura is strongly committed to helping others and does motivational speaking to encourage individuals to turn their lives around. Laura and I have also developed a sitcom called “Special Delivery” which takes place in a mail delivery service like the Post Office. The cast of colorful characters, who are employees and customers, are unique and multi-dimensional who are likeable and racially diverse. I am very excited about 2017 and all of the opportunities that are on the horizon. Everything that I do artistically will always be to bring more attention to the epidemic of gun violence that plagues our country. The LoveLife movement needs to spread from California to New York so we all can learn to value and appreciate the gift of human life. “Love Life, Don’t Take Life” for LoEshe’ and all victims of

LET’S TALK ABOUT
EPIGENETICS BY DR. CHERILYN LEE
I
f you google the question, “What is epigenetics,” the first thing google will show you is how to pronounce it, the fact that it’s a noun related to biology, and that it’s “the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself.” Sounds simple enough, but what does that mean?
CHERILYN LEE, R.N., NP, PH.D. Dr. Lee completed her training as a Registered Nurse from Southwest Community College in Los Angeles, California. She graduated as a Physician Assistant from Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences in Los Angeles, California and later became a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner. She received a Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition from Clayton School of Natural Health in Birmingham, Alabama and is certified in Energy Medicine and is a Certified Natural Healthcare Professional.
Conrad H. Waddington coined the term epigenetics in 1942, making epigenetics is a relatively new concept in our quest for better health. When Waddington coined the term, the physical nature of genes and their role in heredity was not yet known; he was ahead of his time in postulating how genes might interact with their surroundings to produce a phenotype. Bruce Lipton, PhD, is a pioneer in epigenetics – the concept that our genes are not fixed, that they turn on and off. Epigenetics refers to changing phenotype (outward manifestation) without changing genotype, and it doesn’t necessarily require any fancy surgical intervention or complicated medical treatments. Epigenetic modifications don’t change the DNA sequence; they affect how cells “read” genes (Epigenetics: Definition & Examples by Rachael Rettner. http://www.livescience.com/37703-epigenetics. html) The Greek prefix epi- in epigenetics implies features that are “on top of ” or “in addition to” genetics; thus epigenetic traits exist on top of or in addition to the traditional molecular basis for inheritance. (http://pharmacistben. com/video/ben-fuchs-dr-joel-wallach-inter view/) Research is demystifying epigenetics as it relates to our health. For holistic health practitioners, “epigenetics” is basically giving a name to the type of care and guidance we’ve been giving their clients virtually all along. There’s a lot of complicated scientific information explaining epigenetics, but I’ll keep it simple in this article. We all have genetic codes. What we now know is that there are epigenetic codes that influence genetic codes more active or inactive. It’s difficult to alter genes themselves, but we can alter epigenes to control the activeness of genes.
28 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
“What Is Epigenetics” (http://www.whatisepigenetics. com/fundamentals/) discusses clinical applications of epigenetics as relates to various cancers, mental retardation disorders, immune processes and disorders such as lupus-like autoimmunity and arthritis, neuropsychiatric disorders, and pediatric syndromes. Examples of epigenetics at work in people are found in the topic overview “Special Topic: Epigenetics: 20 Years and Rising” by Jeremy Cherfas (http://sciencewatch.com/ articles/special-topic-epigenetics) We need epigenetics to explain, for example, that of two genetically identical twins, one may suffer autism or schizophrenia while the other does not. Much of epigenetic research has focused on cancer, but in recent years this research has expanded to behavioral or psychiatric manifestations of epigenetic influence passing through generations. For example, children of malnourished mothers faced with limited food in later life seem to do okay. Those who have an abundance of food develop cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Epigenetic control is thus adaptive. (P.D. Gluckman, et al., “Epigenetic mechanisms that underpin metabolic and cardiovascular diseases,” Nature Reviews Endocrinology, 5(7): 401-8, 2009.) A review by Anura Hewagama and Bruce Richardson, of the University of Michigan, investigates the ways in which environmental factors interact with specific predisposing genetic elements to trigger diseases such as lupus, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis (A. Hewagama, et al., “The genetics and epigenetics of autoimmune diseases,” Journal of Autoimmunity, 33[1]: 3–11, 2009; 92 citations.) The November 2006 issue of Discover Magazine ran the article “DNA Is Not Destiny: The New Science of Epigenetics” by Ethan Watters in which an experiment was discussed involving laboratory agouti mice that, with no more than a change in diet, were prompted to give birth to young that were strikingly different in appearance and susceptibility to disease. Usually when agouti mice breed, most of the offspring are identical to the parents. The parent mice in Jirtle and Waterland’s experiment—yellow, fat, and susceptible to life-shortening disease—produced a majority of offspring that looked altogether different. These young mice were slender and mousy brown, and they did not display their parents’ susceptibility to cancer and diabetes, living to a spry old age. The effects of the agouti gene had been virtually erased. Remarkably, this transformation was achieved without altering a single letter of the mouse’s DNA. They merely changed the moms’ diet. Starting just before conception, Jirtle and Waterland fed a test group of mother mice a diet rich in methyl donors, small chemical clusters that can attach to a gene and turn it off. These
molecules are common in the environment and are found in many foods, including onions, garlic, beets, and in the food supplements often given to pregnant women. After being consumed by the mothers, the methyl donors worked their way into the developing embryos’ chromosomes and onto the critical agouti gene. The mothers passed along the agouti gene to their children intact, but thanks to their methyl-rich pregnancy diet, they had added to the gene a chemical switch that dimmed the gene’s deleterious effects. “It was a little eerie and a little scary to see how something as subtle as a nutritional change in the pregnant mother rat could have such a dramatic impact on the gene expression of the baby,” Jirtle says. “The results showed how important epigenetic changes could be.” What’s eyeopening is a growing body of evidence suggesting that the epigenetic changes wrought by one’s diet, behavior, or surroundings can work their way into the germ line and echo far into the future. Put simply, and as bizarre as it may sound, what you eat or smoke today could affect the health and behavior of your great-grandchildren. Recent research has made it increasingly clear that for all the popular attention devoted to genome-sequencing projects, the epigenome is just as critical as DNA to the healthy development of organisms, humans included. Jirtle and Waterland’s experiment was a benchmark demonstration that the epigenome is sensitive to cues from the environment. More and more, researchers are finding that an extra bit of a vitamin, a brief exposure to a toxin, even an added dose of mothering can tweak the epigenome—and thereby alter the software of our genes—in ways that affect an individual’s body and brain for life. According to Jirtle, “Before, genes predetermined outcomes. Now everything we do—everything we eat or smoke—can affect our gene expression and that of future generations. Epigenetics introduces the concept of free will into our idea of genetics.”
concerns by promoting better gene expression. Acting on this information can help you improve your own health and even the health of your children and grandchildren. Just a very basic awareness of epigenetics is valuable to helping us understand the importance of making good choices about what we consume and how we minimize stress in our lives. Are research results like the Jirtle and Waterland mice results relevant to human health? Well, mice are mammals, humans are mammals, so—yes. The good news is that what you do that’s healthy for yourself, you’re doing for your children, your grandchildren, your greatgrandchildren, and maybe even generations beyond. Isn’t it great to know that genetics does not have to be your destiny!

SINGER, SONGWRITER, POET, NOVELIST, AND PAINTER
Leonard Cohen September 21, 1934 • November 7, 2016
Cohen died on November 7, 2016 at the age of 82 at his home in Los Angeles; cancer was a contributing cause. According to his manager, Cohen’s death was the result of a fall at his home on the night of November 7, and he subsequently died in his sleep. His death was announced on November 10. His funeral was held on November 10, 2016 in Montreal, at a cemetery on Mount Royal, his congregation Shaar Hashomayim confirmed. As was his wish, Cohen was laid to rest with a Jewish rite, in a simple pine casket, in a family plot. A memorial is planned to take place in Los Angeles. Cohen was survived by his two children and two grandchildren. Tributes were paid by numerous stars and political figures. Citizens and officials in Montreal, where he spent his early life, are considering honoring him by naming a street and other locations, including a library, after him. Mayor Denis Coderre announced that the city of Montreal will organize a tribute concert to Cohen. Cohen was born on September 21, 1934 in Westmount, Quebec, an English-speaking area of Montreal, into a middle-class Canadian Jewish family. His mother, Marsha (Masha) Klonitsky, was the daughter of a Talmudic writer, Rabbi Solomon Klonitsky-Kline, of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry. His paternal grandfather, whose family had moved from Poland to Canada, was Lyon Cohen, the founding president of the Canadian Jewish Congress. His father, Nathan Cohen owned a substantial clothing store and died
when Cohen was nine years old. Leonard Norman Cohen, was a Canadian singer, songwriter, poet, novelist, and painter. His work mostly explored religion, politics, isolation, sexuality, and personal relationships. Cohen was inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation’s highest civilian honour. In 2011, Cohen received one of the Prince of Asturias Awards for literature and the ninth Glenn Gould Prize. Cohen pursued a career as a poet and novelist during the 1950s and early 1960s, and did not launch a music career until 1967, at the age of 33. His first album, Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967), was followed by three more albums of folk music: Songs from a Room (1969), Songs of Love and Hate (1971) and New Skin for the Old Ceremony (1974). His 1977 record Death of a Ladies’ Man was co-written and produced by Phil Spector, which was a move away from Cohen’s previous minimalist sound. In 1979 Cohen returned with the more traditional Recent Songs, which blended his acoustic style with jazz and Oriental and Mediterranean influences. “Hallelujah” was first released on Cohen’s studio album Various Positions in 1984. I’m Your Man in 1988 marked Cohen’s turn to synthesized productions and remains his most popular album. In 1992 Cohen released its follow-up, The Future, which had dark lyrics and references to political and social unrest.
YOU WANT IT DARKER (2016) You Want It Darker is the fourteenth and final studio album by Canadian singersongwriter Leonard Cohen, released on 21 October 2016, by Columbia Records. The album was created while Cohen was dying and focuses on death, God, and humor. It was released to critical acclaim.
“ I went to his [Bob Dylan’s] concert. It was terrific. I’ve been to many Dylan concerts. This one, there was a walkway from the hotel to the auditorium, so you could enter into this private area, the people who had boxes. We were in one of those boxes. First of all, I’ve never been in a private box in an auditorium. That was fun. And a lot of members of the band came. But it was very loud. Fortunately, Raphael, our drummer, had earplugs, and he distributed them. Because our music is quite soft and that’s what we’ve been listening to for three or four months. As Sharon Robinson said, Bob Dylan has a secret code with his audience. If someone came from the moon and watched it they might wonder what was going on. In this particular case he had his back to one half of the audience and was playing the organ, beautifully I might say, and just running through the songs. Some were hard to recognize. But nobody cared. That’s not what they were there for and not what I was there for. Something else was going on, which was a celebration of some kind of genius that is so apparent and so clear and has touched people so deeply that all they need is some kind of symbolic unfolding of the event. It doesn’t have to be the songs. All it has to be is: remember that song and what it did to you. It’s a very strange event.” –Leonard Cohen 34 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
THE ONLY MOMENT THAT YOU CAN LIVE HERE COMFORTABLY IN THESE ABSOLUTELY IRRECONCILABLE CONFLICTS IS IN THIS MOMENT WHEN YOU EMBRACE IT ALL AND YOU SAY “LOOK, I DON’T UNDERSTAND A FUCKING THING AT ALL – HALLELUJAH!” –– LEONARD COHEN
Cohen returned to music in 2001 with the release of Ten New Songs, which was a major hit in Canada and Europe. His eleventh album, Dear Heather, followed in 2004. After a successful string of tours between 2008 and 2010, Cohen released three albums in the final four years of his life: Old Ideas (2012), Popular Problems (2014) and You Want It Darker (2016), the last of which was released three weeks before his death. Cohen was born on September 21, 1934 in Westmount, Quebec, an English-speaking area of Montreal, into a middleclass Canadian Jewish family. His father, Nathan Cohen owned a substantial clothing store and died when Cohen was nine years old. The family observed Orthodox Judaism, and belonged to Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, to which Cohen retained connections all his life. On the topic of being a Kohen, Cohen told Richard Goldstein in 1967, “I had a very Messianic childhood. I was told I was a descendant of Aaron, the high priest.” Cohen attended Roslyn Elementary School, completed grades seven through nine at Herzliah High School, where his literary mentor Irving Layton taught,[8] then transferred in 1948 to Westmount High School, where he studied music and poetry. He became especially interested in the poetry of Federico García Lorca. Cohen involved himself actively beyond Westmount’s curriculum, in photography, on the yearbook staff, as a cheerleader, in campus clubs (Art, Current Events), and even when “heavily involved in the school’s theater program”, he served in the position of
WRITING PROCESS Cohen’s writing process, as he told an interviewer in 1998, was “like a bear stumbling into a beehive or a honey cache: I’m stumbling right into it and getting stuck, and it’s delicious and it’s horrible and I’m in it and it’s not very graceful and it’s very awkward and it’s very painful and yet there’s something inevitable about it.” In 2011 Cohen was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for literature.
President of the Students’ Council. During all of that period, Cohen taught himself to play the acoustic guitar, and formed a country–folk group that he called the Buckskin Boys. After a young Spanish guitar player taught him “a few chords and some flamenco”, Cohen switched to a classical guitar.[9] He has attributed his love of music to his mother, who, he said, had such a lovely voice: “She was Russian and sang songs around the house. And I know that those changes, those melodies, touched me very much. She would sing with us when I took my guitar to a restaurant with some friends; my mother would come, and we’d often sing all night. HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY 35
