hat do you get when you cross a speakeasy with a caterer? Sushi on a Roll also known by that affectionate four letter word, SOAR, and the only San Diego specialty dining venue you’ll come to swear by! The brainchild of Chef Jeff Roberto, this unique outpost will fete its 24th anniversary this February with a celebratory cake composed of none other than, you guessed it, sushi! And while the west coast is renowned for its ardor for this tasty Japanese import, only this gifted culinary artist presides at the one that is not even an actual restaurant but a wholesale venture. Sushi On A Roll has garnered such a devoted local following that its delicacies aren’t advertised, no street signage exists, and its doors are open to the public only one day a week. Residents flock to this capacious, yet intimate, hidden gem from the glowing recommendations of their most valued friends who have raved about not only the freshest, most toothsome creations

but also rhapsodized about the outstanding presentation and ambience. Even the competition lionizes amiable Chef Jeff as he counts 50 other area sushi chefs as cronies. Consider yourself privileged to be invited to a wine tasting and sit with 31 congenial attendees at this spacious dining bar. Or maybe you would like to treat yourself to learning this ancient art in a class sometimes at the picturesque hacienda and patio at The Prado at Balboa Park but also on the premises. Reinvent as a sushi chef to your inner circle should you so desire! Mr. Roberto has over a decade’s experience teaching at culinary schools and his students know all the proper etiquette and would never dream of mingling wasabi with their soy sauce. And if you are looking for a novel holiday choice, look no farther as Chef Jeff will let you enjoy the occasion by doing everything - setting up, cooking, cleaning up, and even arranging the décor. What a stress free way to make the season special and for the first time ever you may be a true celebrant, not the harried host or hostess. With 800 events in merely 14 years to their credit, they may be the most prolific and under recognized “top chefs” around. But long overdue tribute ultimately occurred at this year’s San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival, the preeminent city showcasing, when the organizers acknowledged his achievement and conferred the prestigious Epicurean Award. Mr. Roberto named his now sought after service with a nod to his former ambition to become a pilot. And while he may not be on an aeronautical roll, Jeff ’s surging popularity shows no signs of slowing down. You may expect the Latino Film Industry Post Oscar party to be catered with traditional Hispanic fare but Chef Jeff was the toque of choice. And this well-liked culinary hero isn’t above rolling up his very own sleeves for a worthy cause. This past May he hosted “Barrio On A Roll,” a benefit for Huntington’s Disease that proved to a delightful, fun, free, family event which included a sushi rolling marathon, complimentary beer, food trucks, and a performance by the hot band Tribal Theory. Six chefs participated including Jeff ’s nephews, Austin and Bradley Roberto, to craft an astounding 12,000 6 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

pieces in 8 hours. The SOAR contingent rode and donated proceeds to Race Across America (a comprehensive junket from Oceanside, California to Baltimore, Maryland) and their intrepid cyclists finished in a week with Chef Jeff ’s girl friend and managing partner, the lovely Lorna Ramos and Lee J. Razalan, spearheading the event. What do you get when you cross comic books and the Hard Rock Hotel? The San Diego Comic Con at the Convention Center last July with fistic legend, Iron Mike, lending a hand to the SOAR team. But philanthropy, star-studded gatherings, and charisma are just part of this impressive chef ’s social profile. as SONY, LA, FOX were crucial to the meteoric rise of Chef Jeff whose talented digits rubbed elbows with various luminaries at their premieres Angelina Jolie (Beowulf), Jim Carey (How the Grinch Stole Christmas) , Jamie Fox (Stealth), and the Men In Black crew. This master’s nimble fingers have fed many bold face names at numerous galas including those hosted by the MTV Movie Awards, Comedy Central Awards, and Teen Choice Awards. The SOAR talents visited the set of the Titanic twelve times during filming! Thespians Orlando Bloom and Elizabeth Towne flew this pro to Kentucky for their gatherings and the capstone of this dazzling career may be his induction into the venerable San Diego Baillaige as a Board Member of the revered Chaine des Rotisseurs,”the oldest and most recognized food and wine group in the world.” Even corporate behemoths know who to call for the most distinctive and appetizing fare and high-profile clients such as Mars Candy, Google, NETGEAR, Illumina, Lily USA are regulars.

then manager, Ben Herrera, to gravitate to sushi catering. Collaborating with “hungry” classmates, Michael Ryes, Big Mike Ferrer, and John Sainz, the dynamic, quadruple force of nature launched. Back in the 80’s only 7 sushi bars dotted San Diego compared to 200 today. This buddy system was formative to the creation of 12 area restaurants where they honed their superb skills and established their following before landing a gig at Seaforth Sportfishing. Trusted friend, owner, and then mentor, Frank LoPreste had such faith in this quartet that he lent the use of his galley for a sushi bar. Merely 4 months later, this fledgling venture metamorphosed into a world class operation with luxury hotel clients such as the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel, Hotel Del Coronado, Hyatt Grand Manchester and venues as encompassing as SeaWorld and the Super Bowl (generating an Olympian 55,000 pieces to their credit!). As your mouth waters, you may want to think about supping on this sublime but very affordable sushi which treats the hoi polloi and beautiful people with equal aplomb. Laud this remarkable caterer who is up for almost any challenge as when he served 43,000 pieces for a Qualcomm gathering! Imagine a staggering 16,000 guests have enjoyed this sumptuous and savory fare since SOAR’s inception! If your party is a maximum of 80 persons, you will be treated to a repast that those fortunate enough to attend, will long remember. And since Chef Jeff is not one to rest on his Nori, he would now like you to try his latest offerings, the scrumptious SOAR boy, an improvised sushi grinder, and a Tex-Mex variant, the sushi burrito. From movie stars to California matrons, pugilists to lesser known patrons, all diners get the Red Carpet treatment, so why wait for a special occasion for an indulgence that will make any milestone that much more memorable? MS. CRYSTAL JACINTO At the age of 32, Ms. Crystal Jacinto is probably a woman not only to be admired for her beauty and poise but also due to her devotion as a loving wife to her husband and a super mommy to both her wonderful children. Handling a wellness salon center, a playschool for children and sitting as board member for an energy company is extremely challenging. Having said that, she juggles between work, social commitments, charity service and family with impeccable finesse. A good example to younger women, she is a loving mother and wife, which is an attribute to be admired. HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY 11

ivian was born in Adlay, Surigao del Norte. She is a Japan based entrepreneur. She devoted her time to her family, business and other civic projects that will help those less fortunate people in her country. She is an active member of Inner Wheel Club and engages in lending, financing, real property, trucking and skin care services. Vivian is proud and not ashamed of her roots. According to Vivian, their life in the province was not that easy and at a very young age she went to Manila to find a job and eventually was able to help her family. She went to Japan and got married to a Japanese national. But due to their differences, her arranged marriage failed. She pushed herself to work hard in Japan. Due to her dedication and perseverance she ventured into real estate and her business and her life were changed. Vivian recently competed at Mrs. World 2016 in South Korea - one of the most prestigious beauty pageants in the world for married women. Hollywood Weekly is proud to have a conversation with Ms. Vivian and she hopes to inspire our readers with her life experiences and share her road to success. HWM: During your younger days, is there anyone who encouraged you to enter or join any pageants or in the entertainment industry? VIVIAN: a lot of talent scouts offered to help but I turned those opportunities down because I didn’t want to enter the limelight. In fact, there was a film director who offered to have me become a film celebrity but it didn’t work out due to my other priorities in life. HWM: Could you tell us more about your younger days or the time when you were in the province? Vivian: Back then I lived in the small baranggay in Adlay, Surigao del Sur with literally no lights at night with little or no electricity. We had to be at home early at night. HWM: We couldn’t imagine a life growing up without electricity. How did your parents manage your family? VIVIAN: My parents used to send us to school and I was very determined to finish school whatever our life is. That’s why at a very young age, I used to travel to Manila to find work. I wanted to help my family in the province. HWM: When you were in Manila, what were some of your

I’VE FACED A LOT OF CHALLENGES AND challenges or endeavors that you experienced? VIVIAN: I started working in Manila and there was an offer to go to Japan and marry a guy whom I was not familiar with. So in short, that was a fixed marriage. But I didn’t have a choice that time; however I fell in love in the process. But I don’t want to elaborate more about my husband. HWM: How did you start your business in Japan and in Manila? Vivian : After my failed marriage, I worked hard and was able to save money. When I came back to the Philippines, I started a business and it all started there. I’ve faced a lot of challenges and rough road in life. We just need to be stay strong and learn to face all the misfortunes in life. HWM: We know that you are busy managing your businesses, how do you manage your time doing all your activities in Japan and Manila? VIVIAN: I personally take care of my transactions so I always travel in Japan and in the Philippines. Because as a businesswoman, we need to closely monitor our business. It’s hard to trust other people and I was a victim of being betrayed by friends and colleagues. But life must go on, we have to be positive and we have to learn from these mistakes. HWM: Our November issue is about charity, so would you mind telling us about your charity work? VIVIAN: Despite of my busy schedules, I always make sure to give back to those who are less fortunate in the Philippines. I do support some of the civic projects which has benefited a lot of people. For example, I supported the following charities, Tahanan, Sta. Luisa, Antipolo Rizal, Gulod Health Center – I donated medical supplies for the health center and I donated goods for the 40-preschoolers enrolled at Bagong Silangan Daycare Center. I also donated goods for the 650 families devastated by fire at Baesa, Novaliches, Quezon City. I had a feeding program for less fortunate children at Brgy. 108 Zone 9, Imelda Street Tondo, Manila together with the TAGASUPIL leader in action Manila Chapter Hon. Alberto “AL” Valenzona. We also had a feeding for almost 600 children in Adlay, Surigao del Sur. HWM: What is your motivation in doing your various charity work? VIVIAN : As I mentioned, I came from a very simple family in the province, so I understood their everyday life. I want to give back and pay forward what I received from God. HWM: You also mentioned that you joined in different beauty pageants, would you like to tell us about it? VIVIAN: This past June, I represented the Philippines and competed for Classic Mrs. Asia International in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Fortunately, I won and received one of the major titles, Classic Mrs. Asia International Cosmopolitan. I was awarded as the Classic Mrs. Asia International Popularity

ROUGH ROAD IN LIFE. WE JUST NEED TO BE STAY STRONG AND LEARN TO FACE ALL THE MISFORTUNE IN LIFE.

Queen and Classic Mrs. Asia International Ambassador. This November I also represented the Philippines and competed for Mrs. World in Korea. Although I did not win, I feel representing your country is something big for me already. HWM: What motivates you to join in these beauty pageants? VIVIAN: I wanted to encourage other women and mothers that while they continue loving their family, they should take care of their self and believe in women’s power. Joining beauty pageants is not easy. I never thought that this would happen to me, like doing the catwalk in front of a lot of people, and facing the judges. For me, this means that every woman should not stop dreaming and continue to pursue their goals. Being a mother is not a hindrance to accomplishing your dreams. HWM: Aside from your beautiful face and flawless skin, what was your edge over the other candidates during Mrs. Asia International? VIVIAN: I always speak from the bottom of my heart, I am honest and direct to the point. HWM: Because of your generosity and your heart to help other people, would you like to share those recognition and awards you recently received? VIVIAN: I am so proud and honored for the awards that I have received and being recognized by different organizations. This year, I was one of the Top 50 awardees in Solgon, Vietnam as “World’s Outstanding Women’s Awardee, Model Mom of the Philippines 2016, Pamana Awards USA 2016, and Global Achiever Award 2016. Last year I also received the following awards; Empowered Women Achievement Award, Paul Harris Award (Rotary Centennial Club 3780, Quezon City), Gandang Filipina Japan 2015 and recently I was awarded Most Outstanding Filipino in the Field of Beauty and Compassion. HWM: After these events, what are we looking forward to next, Ms. Vivian? And what would you want to tell our readers about your ups and down? VIVIAN: I do believe in the saying that we have to live life to the fullest. So right now, I am so thankful and blessed to have the good people and supporters in my side. I would like to encourage HWM readers to always count your blessings and never forget where we came from. Always pray and learn how to forgive and continue to spread the love. Life is so wonderful so turn your negativity into positive energy and enjoy life! HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY 27

PEPPER

JAY

PRODUCER, DIRECTOR, EDITOR HW: Thank you for taking the time to speak with Hollywood Weekly Magazine. Tell me a little about yourself and your background. What are your personal attributes that in your opinion made you the person you are today?

Dynamic Song Performance, a Singer’s Bible. This may be the only how-to performance book for singers that is equally valuable to magicians, comics, actors, public speakers, models, performance coaches, and trial lawyers. Why? Because it focuses on audience psychology. The book explains what every performer must do to seduce the camera and the audience, to keep the crowds enthralled, and turn listeners and viewers into loyal fans.

PJ: Thank you Prather for asking. My Grandmother and Mother influenced me greatly to become the person I am today. I was born in Hollywood, California. I spent much of my childhood in the Moulin Rouge, Coconut Grove, Brown Derby, and in Vegas casinos with my best friend, my Grandma Lida. Grandma Lida’s best friend was Sophie Tucker, who was nicknamed the last of the red hot mamas. I had the opportunity to share friendships with the best of the entertaining “Rat Pack,” and their families, and I also wanted to participate in that life. I began acting when I was about 5 years old on the stage or in front of a camera, acting, dancing, playing the accordion. The world of entertainment has been my basis since. My Mother and I were also best of friends. She was a very popular middle school teacher. After graduating San Diego State University, I became a public school teacher in the inner-city of Los Angeles, teaching a variety of subjects including performance, dance, and drill team. I continue privately teaching performance skills to singers, actors, comics, lawyers, public speakers; just about anyone in front of a camera, audience, or in a recording studio. HW: After a successful career in education and working as an attorney, what prompted to you to go further into entertainment?

34 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

PEPPER JAY, PRODUCER, DIRECTOR, EDITOR, C-STAND, WHATEVER IT TAKES FOR A PERSON TO CREATE A PRODUCTION COMPANY, A NETWORK (ACTORS PODCAST NETWORK) AND CONTENT FOR CLIENTS.

I enjoyed working in education, both teaching students and teachers. I obtained extreme satisfaction in helping people as a lawyer for over 30 years. However, during that time, I never left the world entertainment. Today, I attempt to utilize my teaching and lawyering skills at my public speaking engagements at corporate events, schools, etc, whether or not the subject is entertainment.

HW: I understand you have a company is called Pepper Jay Productions. What does Pepper Jay Productions produce? Pepper Jay Productions makes things: music, independent films, music videos, commercials, video blogs for online magazines, etc. My favorite is music production. Tell me about Dynamic Song Performances? What are the first five chapters that you cover in your book? PJ: Dynamic Song Performance, The Singer’s Bible, is a text of organized notes from over 40 years of teaching. The first 5 chapters: General Information about Song Performance, How to DO IT!, Communicate Your Song, How to Move On Stage, and Package Yourself. HW: How do your experiences as a teacher and a litigator translate in terms of services that you now offer? PJ: When I was a teacher, it wasn’t unusual to have 40 to 60 students in a class. It was my job to make sure that none of them were “left behind.” Much of the Audience Psychology skills that I now teach and that I include in Dynamic Song Performance, The Singer’s Bible, are skills that I developed in the classroom and in the courtroom.

I am actor who has to audition, and I find that I am a bundle of nerves that results in anxiety, how can your services help me? I believe that a performer’s nerves comes from lack of confidence which usually results from the self-perception of lack of preparedness. Once someone believes they are prepared (studied for the test, for example), they should be less nervous. It is for that reason that I tried to include in the Dynamic Song Performance text instructions and exercises for all of the performance skills I have encountered over my life as a performer and teacher. Learning skills and practice should overcome nerves. HW: While you were practicing law, what skill sets did you develop that would be beneficial for actors or others who are engaged in public speaking? PJ: One of my mentors was Anthony Robbins, who was extremely helpful to me as a performer, lawyer and public speaker. Particularly, Mr. Robbins explains how people (an audience, jury, etc) takes in information (seeing, hearing, feeling). An awareness to reach all of an audience assists whether it is an audience on 1 or 10,000. HW: What is the most important concept that people can learn from you in order to succeed in a public speaking related profession? Tell me about the performance skills that you used an attorney that you now teach to actors that can to enhance their performance.

PEPPER JAY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HARD-WORKING MIDDLE-AGED ACTRESS PRODUCER WOMAN WITH GRAY HAIR AND BRAIDS YOU’VE EVER MET IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE WHO LOOKS FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU!

PJ: Know your subject, love sharing your subject with your audience, and learn some basic technical performance skills that will enhance your public speaking. The audience psychology skills that I used as an attorney successfully transfer to public speaking regardless of the type of venue. HW: As a skilled attorney, what did you learn that you’re able to pass on to your clients? PJ: Everyone is important. A client’s case is important to them or else they would not have sought out an attorney in the first place. As a performer, each of your audience members have chosen to spend time enjoying you or learning from you, or both. Your belief that each audience member is just as important as each member of a jury will set you on the right track to communicate and share with them.

HW: Is there anything we didn’t cover that your wish to share with our readers? PJ: Everyone, amateur or professional, can improve their performance skills in almost every situation: interview, audition, or performance. Record yourself and be your own best critic. Practice, practice, and then practice some more! Be prepared!

George Lopez opened the night, warming the audience up with hilarious bits criticizing both presidential candidates and the state of this election season. Actor and comedian Eddie Griffin followed, kicking things off slow with jokes about Vegas and quickly moving into topical Cosby impressions. He also touched on the election, saying he’s voting for Hillary Clinton because he wants to put “pimpin Bill Clinton” back in the White House. Next up was one of the original Kings of Comedy, D.L. Hughley, who gave one of the best sets of the night with the entire Events Center in an uproar. Last but certainly not least was another King of Comedy, Cedric the Entertainer, who had the crowd going with jokes about how raunchy songs are on the radio these days, including Yo Gotti’s

FROM SWEDEN TO SUNDANCE….

38 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

The abridged version of this tale is that my dear mother was from Sweden and my father is from New York. I was born in Sweden and spent about half of my life there, after first spending some of my early years in Austin, Texas. Where, coincidentally, another one of my films, “Come Morning”, screened at the Austin Film Festival a few years

ago. Then I luckily enough found myself in New York City where I now reside. I always wanted to be an actress, ever since I was a little girl. I know, we’ve all heard that one before… Elise jokes, rolling her eyes. I actually used to put on shows at home with my older brother Thomas as my sidekick. Thank god there were no iPhones at the time…I think…who knows, maybe I would have become a YouTube sensation singing and dancing with my cape made of a towel. Not easy believing you’ll actually have a future as an actress when you are a kid, feeling misplaced in a remote town in Sweden, but eventually Elise Rovinsky got the

rom Sweden to Sundance”…seems like a crazy leap right? From a small town in the southwest part of Sweden to being in a film, “How To Tell You’re A Douchebag”, that premiered at Sundance, by way of New York. How the hell did that happen? -She says, her face lighting up with a laugh.

opportunity to come to New York City, attend the Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting (Graduate Program) and, well, the rest is history. At least history in the making, Elise says with a hopeful smile. What can I say about my journey? Sometimes it feels like a long one. Arduous and terrifying at times but it is inevitably always rewarding in the end. Whether it is being nervous during the early days of rehearsals for an upcoming stage performance, not thinking you will ever be off book and ready, or whether it is sitting in hair and makeup in the wee hours of the morning getting ready for your upcoming scene to be shot, thinking of all the people who depend on your getting it right and doing a good job.

We have seen Elise Rovinsky cast in a wide variety of roles. Characters ranging from a crazy French choreographer to an old, mythological figure to a fast talking literary agent to mention only a few. “Being completely bilingual makes it easy for me to do accents and even convincingly speak some languages I don’t really know”. She has a unique look, can pretty much be from anywhere and is easily placed in different periods and eras as well. Do you have a favorite? But of course! Put me in something from the 20’s and I’m happy as a clam she says. She grew up watching movies, memorizing scenes and lines. Loving the escape of disappearing into someone else’s life for a little while. They always talked a lot about movies and TV at home as well when she was a kid. “I always heard what my “uncle Mickey” was up to out in LA with his shows”. This is of course Michael “Mickey” Ross who was one of the writers/producers of “Three’s Company, “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons”. Those

shows were all rather revolutionary for their time. Her parents always supported her acting ambition. “They never told me that I couldn’t or shouldn’t. I will always be grateful for that”. You’ve had a remarkable spring! “Yes, I worked on an episode of ‘Red Oaks’, which is an Amazon Studios series in which Paul Reiser is one of the leads. The episode was directed by the talented Nisha Ganatra, who is busy as hell and with good reason”. The incredible Sundance premiere for ‘How To Tell You’re A Douchebag’ as well as some sold out screenings of the film at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) in New York. I am a core member of a sketch comedy group called The Shorts Show and we have had a monthly show at the PIT (Peoples Improv Theater) here in New York City for quite a while. We mostly do web based content but also just completed our first feature called ‘Prism’”. ‘How To Tell You’re A Douchebag’ has done really well and was very well received at Sundance. “Yes it was. I was working and unfortunately could not make the screenings which was a bummer”. Sundance was just the beginning for this great movie, there have been a bunch

of other festivals and it actually just won best screenplay at the American Black Film Festival in Miami. “I had a great time working on this film with writer/director Tahir Jetter. There is still more to come with this film… “ Elise Rovinsky says. SUMMER IS HERE BUT WE’VE HEARD YOU WILL HAVE A BUSY FALL? I will be shooting a film in Connecticut in August. Teaming up with writer/director Christopher S. Lombardi again. Had the lead in his most recent film ‘The Reluctant Detective.’ Sweden is beckoning as well. Will be working with some very talented folks in Stockholm on a film this fall. A project I was able to land through my wonderful manager, Maria Vascsak, at IMA International Management Agency And that is about all I can tell you for now. – She says with a mischievous look on her face. Clearly there are some other things going on that she can’t talk about yet. My fabulous agent Marius Bargielski at Metropolis Artists Agency, MAA is keeping me busy.
