APRIL 2017

A LETTER FROM

PUBLISHER/EDITOR IN CHIEF Prather Jackson

THE EDITOR

VICE PRESIDENT Bernice Harris Michael D. Coxson

In this, our April 2017 edition of Hollywood Weekly, we are honored to introduce two high profile Beverly Hills doctors, Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Raj (Beverly Hills Orthopedic Institute) and Neurosurgeon, Dr. Ian Armstrong, (Southern California Spine Institute). Proponents of preventative medicine will greatly appreciate the philosophy of these great medical doctors who acknowledge the most formidable medical challenge of this century may very well be how to remain active and sustain a healthy quality of life throughout.

The NCAA March Madness tournament is over but the heat from the court is still abuzz. The March Madness Music Festival featured some of the hottest acts in music with a lineup that will blow you away. The Chainsmokers, Keith Urban, Aerosmith Blink-182, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Grouplove, Capital Cities, Leon Bridges, and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats kicked things up a notch over the three-day event that was held at Margaret T. Hance Park in Phoenix. Each night of the festival featured a different sponsor. AT&T Block Party kicks things off, followed by Coca-Cola Music, and Capital One JamFest. Fans who won’t be there in person will still have a chance to watch some of the action. Select shows were live-streamed on NCAA.com, BleacherReport. com and the official NCAA YouTube channel. Senior vice president of Turner Live Events, Shea Guinn, told Hollywood Weekly. “The NCAA March Madness Music Festival has become the largest event outside of the Final Four games themselves. With three days of free concerts, A-list artists and well over 100,000 attendees it definitely adds another layer of excitement. The concerts allow fans from all over the country the opportunity to be part of March Madness even if they may not have tickets to the games.” The world famous Laugh Factory will present Trump Impersonations Day on April 26th. The show will be hosted by the original Trump impersonator and SNL Alum, Darrell Hammond. And finally we are honored to announce that Jhpiego, an international non-profit health organization and John Hopkins University affiliate, will honor Ann and Jim Gianopulos Paramount Pictures’ new CEO with the Elyse Bila Ouedraogo award in recognition of their extraordinary volunteer efforts and support of women and families.

Enjoy,

“ALL DISEASE BEGINS IN THE GUT.

– HIPPOCRATES

T

BY BLAIR SORREL he adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” is more than just a popular 1866 Pembrokeshire proverb that has lingered because of its euphony. And since contemporary babies may rival the saying’s longevity, its pithy wisdom may well be worth reexamining. Two high profile Beverly Hills doctors, Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Raj (Beverly Hills Orthopedic Institute), and Neurosurgeon, Dr. Ian Armstrong, (Southern California Spine Institute) are sophisticated proponents of preventative medicine mentoring a more salubrious lifestyle while still healthy. So that Welsh wag was on to something.

“WALKING IS MAN’S BEST MEDICINE.” – HIPPOCRATES

A specialist in microsurgery and spinal instrumentation, Dr. Armstrong is the Medical Director of the Southern California Spine Institute, a premier center for the treatment of spinal disorders.

Amid so many accomplished surgeons, you may well wonder what makes this pair so special, so beloved? True, they both talk the talk, walk the walk as living advocates of the healthier regimen they espouse. But that adherence and humility is only a small piece of the puzzle that warranted their peers’ nominating them as local “Super Doctors.” Beyond the frequent television and radio appearances, the glitz and glamour of their tony following, this duo has basic decency. All men (and women) are created equal when it comes to the waiting room, from everyday folks, to bold face Hollywood names, to sports titans, dancers, royalty, even other accomplished physicians, everyone receives the same attention and care. Beyond this democratic treatment, and probably even more compelling, is their shared concern for an increasingly sedentary, contemporary techno-culture where everybody is at an enhanced risk of becoming in the words of Dr. Raj, “a prisoner in your own body.” The most formidable medical challenge of this century may very well be how to remain active and sustain a healthy quality of life throughout.

“WHEREVER THE ART OF MEDICINE IS LOVE, THERE IS A LOVE OF HUMANITY.”–HIPPOCRATES

www.ianarmstrongmd.com www.facebook.com/IanArmstrongMd 6 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

In our high-octane era, healers and panaceas are tantalizing alternatives to addressing the underlying issues. As a second generation doctor, Dr. Armstrong appropriates his beloved father’s affection for his patients whom he regards as extended family coupled with his strong, religious faith which goads him to find answers, seek more profound cures. Both physicians apprise the afflicted, in layman’s terms, of the problem and best treatment options that would preclude surgery (the last resort). Better still, fix the problem before it starts. Renowned Dr. Raj is one of the first adopters of this alternative method and a pioneer in stem cell therapy, utilizing your body’s own stem cells from the groin, which is less invasive and vaunts a faster recovery time. Before you put your aching body in a practitioner’s gifted hands, take your health responsibilities into your own. Improve your posture, diet, and exercise level. Be aware that every extra pound adds five pounds of pressure to the body’s largest joint - the knees - so the prospect of becoming wheelchair bound is a real risk of obesity. And if that isn’t a catalyst to start to move, the renowned Dr. Raj, wonders what’s the point of living if immobile in your golden years? Yet yoga devotees and weekend warriors put themselves at unforeseen risk so do so slowly and sensibly and not as an emergency room statistic.

Dr. Armstrong regards the spine as “a very eloquent piece of equipment” and is dumbfounded that his patients minister more to their lawn movers than their anatomy succumbing needlessly to incapacitating pain in their middle years. An excruciating back impacts on every aspect of the afflicted person’s life. Imagine a day where it aches too much to sit in a car, at your desk, or in a pew. Advanced neglect may render the sufferer incapable of providing for his or her family during peak performance decades. Reassuring to know that contemporary technology has revolutionized procedures for all ages allowing for greater functionality much later in life. Comforting news for Baby Boomers and even better tidings for Millennials who can still amend their habits in their prime. And to quote Hippocrates, “The wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings.” Beverly Hills, consider yourself blessed to have these two wise men grace your community and the lifestyles of the rich, famous, and those somewhere in-between.

“CURE SOMETIMES, TREAT OFTEN, COMFORT ALWAYS.” – HIPPOCRATES

Dr. Raj specialize in utilizing a combination of minimally invasive hip, knee, shoulder surgery with stem cell therapy, in order to keep his patients active and back in the game. He uses the latest technology for hip and knee replacements for those in advanced stages of injury. His results are miraculous http://drhipandknee.com/ https://www.facebook.com/officialdrraj/

KILLING US SOFTLY

DAVE CHAPPELLE’S TWO COMEBACK STAND-UP SPECIALS FOR NETFLIX FIND THE LEGENDARY COMEDIAN MINING A RICH VEIN OF GALLOWS HUMOR. SOMETIMES YOU LAUGH, SOMETIMES YOU CRY, SOMETIMES YOU WINCE  —   BUT HE ALWAYS MAKES YOU THINK. Ten minutes into The Age of Spin, the first of two new Dave Chappelle Netflix specials streaming now (the other is Deep in the Heart of Texas), the veteran comedian settles into a personal account of the dreaded Routine Traffic Stop. It ends with him getting to drive off gingerly at 30 miles an hour on the highway — Breathalyzers don’t pick up weed, he explains — but rarely does it go so smoothly for black people not named Dave Chappelle. He goes on to talk about Marlene Pinnock, who in 2014 was beaten by a California highway patrolman on the side of a freeway, in full view of rush-hour traffic, which was, to put it simply, fucked up. Chappelle: “… It was so fucked up that it didn’t even go to court. The city of L.A. just gave this woman one and a half million dollars for her pain and suffering. That is not bad, considering that’s the same amount of money Marcos Maidana got to fight Floyd Mayweather the second time. And this woman obviously hasn’t trained a day in her life. You could see it on the tape — her guards were low, she was taking a lot of shots.” The morbid joke is hilarious because honestly, who thinks like that? (The answer is plenty of people; it’s just that they’re usually looking at grainy dash cam footage talking about how, if it had been them, they would’ve complied.) 26 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

It’s also hilarious because of how Chappelle squawks his fight analysis with glee, which is at odds with the frankly macabre content of the joke itself. Strip the antics, lay the facts bare, and it’s sobering, as most real things are. To be nonwhite in America is often to feel targeted and walled in. It’s difficult to explain that feeling without sounding defeatist or suicidal. The joke works because you need the laugh, more than you could’ve possibly imagined. And it’s important because of the conversations it could spark. What would we do without jokes? Despair full time, probably. If comedy truly is tragedy plus time, then gallows humor — laughing when there’s nothing to laugh about and there’s nothing immediately better to do — tends to alchemize tragedy. Because time is ever growing short. Dave Chappelle knows the social heft of this mission; it drove him to Africa and cost him $50 million. As the story goes, he was struck on set during a racially charged skit (that’s almost all of them) by an uncomfortably jolly laugh from a white spectator. Chappelle couldn’t abide being misunderstood about topics that carry this much weight. So he went home. And now he’s back.

Mr. Gianopulos, a veteran studio chief with such blockbusters as Titanic, Star Wars and Avatar to his credit, and wife Ann, an accomplished marketing director, will be celebrated on May 1 at Jhpiego’s gala “Laughter is the Best Medicine” at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. This event showcases Jhpiego’s outstanding work saving lives, improving health and transforming futures in the world’s poorest places. Every day, over 800 women die globally from childbirth related causes and pregnancy. Nearly all of these maternal deaths occur in the developing world and, astonishingly, the majority could be prevented with lowcost health care solutions, a hallmark of Jhpiego’s work in more than 40 countries.

She also takes it upon herself to follow up with women who do not show up for their antenatal care appointments.

Mr. Gianopulos is the newly-appointed Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures with oversight of the firm’s film and television operations worldwide. The couple will share the Elyse Bila Ouedraogo Award, which is named for a nurse in West Africa who died from cervical cancer for lack of a simple screening test. Jhpiego has been fighting for 44 years to ensure equity in health care services because Jhpiego believes where a woman lives should not determine if she lives. Mr. Gianopulos, a New York native who traveled the world on a tanker ship as a young man, has been active in many philanthropic causes, including the National Entertainment Advisory Council for the AntiDefamation League, The Brady Center, the City of Hope and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Developing leaders on surgical teams is a key strategy of the Safe Surgery 2020 Initiative now underway in Ethiopia; the goal is to deliver high-quality surgical services and reduce surgery-related deaths.

After leaving the corporate world to raise the couple’s three daughters, Mrs. Gianopulos worked as a consultant in eco-friendly, “green” marketing. Today, she dedicates her free time to help charities and community organizations such as The Archer School for Girls (trustee and committee chair), the Geffen Theater advisory board, the Cambodian Children’s Fund and various schools.

ABOUT JHPIEGO For 44 years, Jhpiego has empowered frontline health workers by designing and implementing effective, lowcost, hands-on solutions to strengthen the delivery of health care services for women and their families. Jhpiego works to break down barriers to high-quality health care for the world’s most vulnerable populations.
