THE ACADEMY WILL LAUNCH
‘ACADEMY GOLD’ TALENT DEVELOPMENT AND INCLUSION
I
PROGRAM THIS SUMMER
n June, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will launch Academy Gold, a new entertainment industry-wide summer internship and mentoring program that will expand opportunities for students and young professionals from underrepresented communities. This initiative will afford top film entertainment, technology, production services and digital media companies an opportunity to recruit and educate a nationwide pool of diverse talent. The Academy also will build an alumni database to track the professional development of Academy Gold participants and provide a resource to connect alumni with one another upon completion of the program. Several companies, including Deluxe, The Walt Disney Company, Dolby Laboratories, FotoKem, FremantleMedia, HBO, IMAX, Lionsgate/Starz, Panavision, Paramount Pictures, Participant Media, Sony Pictures, Technicolor, Twentieth Century Fox Film, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros., have already committed to the program. Each partner will sponsor up to three interns. “As chair of the Academy’s Education Committee, I am proud that the Academy is taking proactive steps in building partnerships within the entertainment industry to move the needle on talent development and inclusion,”
said Nancy Utley, Academy governor and president of Fox Searchlight Pictures. “The Academy Gold program is a testament to the shared commitment of the Academy and industry leaders to address one of biggest challenges facing our community today and effectuate meaningful change.” In this pilot year, more than 50 interns (including 15 interns who will be placed within the Academy) will participate in the Academy Gold program. The eight-week program will offer participants networking opportunities with Academy members and industry professionals, screenings and educational workshops. The internships are available to undergraduate and graduate college students with an emphasis on high-quality, underrepresented talent in order to help them acquire the knowledge, skills and connections to achieve success as they navigate full-time, above- and below-the-line entertainment industry careers. “The Academy is in a unique position to tap into and encourage its nearly 7,000 members to become involved mentors,” said Edgar Aguirre, the Academy’s director of talent development and inclusion. “The Academy Gold program will empower and create new opportunities for emerging and diverse talent, while engaging our membership and underscoring the impact these leaders can have on shaping the future of our industry.”.

Spotlight on pioneering talent manager
MARIA
VASCSAK
26 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
HUNGARY
IN ONLY FOUR YEARS, STOCKHOLMBASED MARIA VASCSAK HAS DEVELOPED A TALENT MANAGEMENT & PRODUCTION AGENCY WITH INTERNATIONAL TALENT FROM SCANDINAVIA AND THE U.S.
N
ot all career paths are clear from the start – that’s something Talent Manager and Producer Maria Vascsak knows first hand. With a BSBA from International University of Monaco, Maria Vascsak moved back to Sweden after eight years abroad. During her first few years back in Sweden, she held different managerial positions within the Entertainment-, Real Estate-, and Retail industry until she was asked one day whether she’d be interested in managing an actor. Maria Vascsak, always up for new challenges, accepted without hesitation….and the rest is, as they say, history.
I THINK I’VE ALWAYS DREAMT ABOUT MANAGING ACTORS AND ARTISTS, SO WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY PRESENTED ITSELF, I DIDN’T HESITATE, MARIA VASCSAK SAYS. It isn’t easy nowadays, but Vascsak can certainly be called a pioneer with her establishing of this agency 4 years ago in Sweden, combining both talent management and production. Her vision was clear from the start, making her extremely successful thus far and the agency wide reaching. Maria’s sought after and accomplished talent can be found in Stockholm, Los Angeles and New York.
PHONE: +1 (917) 717 9091 MAIL: INFO@IMACONTENT.COM WWW.IMACONTENT.COM
Maria Vascsak is herself a product of dual countries. She is Swedish with Hungarian heritage. Speaking the language fluently. Vascsak studied and lived abroad for many many years as well. She has called Paris, Brussels, Monaco, Menlo Park California and Mahway New Jersey home at one time or another. Therefore, the international angle became a natural ingredient in her business.
EVEN THOUGH SWEDISH ACTORS AND ARTISTS REALLY HAVE HELPED TO PUT SWEDEN ON THE MAP LATELY – WE STILL LIVE IN A PRETTY SMALL COUNTRY. I WAS SURE THAT THE INTERNATIONAL ANGLE WOULD BE CRUCIAL FOR ME, THE AGENCY, AND FIRST AND FOREMOST FOR MY TALENTS. I ALSO THINK THAT THE INDUSTRY IS CHANGING; WE’RE SEEING MORE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION. AS A TALENT MANAGER TODAY, I THINK YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE WHOLE WORLD AS YOUR PLAYING FIELD, AND NOT JUST THE COUNTRY THAT YOU’RE BASED IN, MARIA VASCSAK CONTINUES.

She does it all. Contract negotiations, branding, Visa applications, collaborations with photographers in order to always have someone standing by for various shoots and much more. As a manager she is also always on top of what the actors might need to improve and change in order to get called in as she sees what’s being cast and submits her talent via the Breakdowns. Maria Vascsak of IMA Content also has some very close and incredibly important relationships with agents in the US.
TO SOME EXTENT, IT’S A FULLSERVICE AGENCY WHICH OF COURSE REQUIRES A LOT OF WORK BUT AT THE SAME TIME ALLOWS ME THE CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TALENT WHICH IS CRUCIAL FOR ALL OF THIS TO WORK. ALSO, IT ENABLES ME TO CUSTOMIZE MY SERVICES WHICH I THINK IS KEY FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED. Unlike Talent Management peers, Maria Vascsak doesn’t have a background in the film industry. Initially she saw this as a great challenge – something that, over time, thankfully has changed as it makes her see business opportunities from a different perspective. It quite simply gives her a unique edge. Vascsak isn’t burdened with conventionality and that makes her a force to be reckoned with.
It’s a good thing this busy manager loves to travel as her clients and collaborators have her criss crossing the Atlantic all the time. She basically commutes between Stockholm-Los Angeles-New York City-London in order to see her network face to face. This also happens to be a huge part of the success of IMA Content; Maria’s close collaboration with her talent. She chooses just the right amount of clients in order to have the right amount of time to work closely with each one, custom fitting her management to each individual’s needs. If you ask any of her actors about this, they will tell you that they feel as if she only works with them and no one else as she is constantly on top of each aspect of that talent’s particular requirements.
IT WAS A CHALLENGE, AND SOMETIMES STILL IS, NOT HAVING WORKED IN THE FILM INDUSTRY PRIOR TO BECOMING A TALENT MANAGER. AT THE SAME TIME, I HAVE 10+ YEARS OF MANAGING COMPLEX PROJECTS IN DIVERSE ENVIRONMENTS WITH TOUGH BUSINESS TARGETS UNDER MY BELT – WHICH IS AN INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE WHEN IT COMES TO NEGOTIATING CONTRACTS AND ADVISING TALENT. AND LET’S FACE IT – EVEN IN THE FILM INDUSTRY, IT IS INEVITABLY ALWAYS ABOUT BUSINESS.

Vascsak and Hollywood Weekly Magazine have an amazing collaboration which has solidified over the years. IMA Content was responsible for both the promotional trailer that opened the Hollywood Weekly Film Festival last year. This year IMA Content and Vascsak will coproduce the spectacular event as well as having one of her clients, the very funny and talented Actress and Comedian Kathryn LeRoux, hosting the festival. IMA Content, with Maria Vascsak at the helm, has grown substantially over a short period of time. It has proven over and over that the concept of boutique agency, close and particularly personal relationships with the talent, combining production and collaboration within the film industry, is the way of the future. Vascsak, undoubtedly, always seems to be a step ahead…

WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE FOR 2017? We started producing content a few years ago. To date, we’ve produced a promotional trailer, a music video, the on-screen content which opened a film festival and commercials. Hopefully we’ll get plenty of opportunities to continue doing that in the year to come. Also, I will continue to commute between Stockholm, London, L.A. and New York to further build strong networks to help bring recognition and exposure for my talents. Last but not least, I’m proud of the amazing collaboration we have with Hollywood Weekly Magazine and their film festival that we will help co-produce this year. All in all, 2017 is a year full of hard work, but a year to look forward to.

he Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (commonly referred to as Coachella or the Coachella Festival) is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, located in the Inland Empire’s Coachella Valley, in the Colorado Desert. It was co-founded by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen in 1999, and is organized by Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Live. The event features musical artists from many genres of music, including rock, indie, hip hop, and electronic dance music, as well as art installations and sculptures. Across the grounds, several stages continuously host live music. The main stages are the: Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Gobi Tent, Mojave Tent, and Sahara Tent; a smaller Oasis Dome was used in 2006 and 2011, while a new Yuma stage was introduced in 2013 and a Sonora stage in 2017.

validated the site’s viability for hosting large events, leading to the inaugural Coachella Festival’s being held over the course of two days in October 1999—just three months after Woodstock ‘99. After no event was held in 2000, Coachella returned on an annual basis beginning in April 2001, as a single-day event. In 2002, the festival reverted to a two-day format. Coachella was expanded to a third day in 2007 and eventually a second weekend in 2012; it is currently held on consecutive three-day weekends in April, with each weekend having identical lineups. Organizers began permitting spectators to camp on the grounds in 2003, one of several expansions and additions of amenities that have been made in the festival’s history. Coachella showcases popular and established musical artists, as well as emerging artists and reunited groups. Coachella is one of the largest, most famous, and most profitable music festivals in the United States and all over the world. Each Coachella staged from 2013 to 2015 set new records for festival attendance and gross revenues. The 2016 festival sold 198,000 tickets and grossed $94.2 million.
