A LETTER FROM
THE EDITOR
I am still in a state of disbelief. Prince dead at 57 years of age. Upon hearing the news, I was left in a state of shock as if I had suddenly been hit by a bolt of electricity. Similar feelings of pain and frankly agony arose upon learning the deaths of Michael, Whitney and now Prince. Each music icon enjoyed global appeal with legions of fans. And each superstar was considered among the most talented singers of my generation. Now sadly, they are each gone. It occurred to me that Prince and I are the same age. PRATHER JACKSON Growing up during the 70’s, while attending college at Tulane University, I found my affection for the music of His Purple Majesty. Apart from being a prolific showman with a mastery of the performing arts, Prince had talent. Someone once told me he played every instrument on his early albums. It was confirmed by LA. Reid, C.E.O. of Epic Records, and by those who knew Prince personally, that his talents were off the charts. Now frankly speaking, that was impressive because I studied music and while in high school and tried my hand at playing the saxophone. But whereas I struggled to produce a sound, and in no way possessed any real talent for music, this guy Prince was literally from another Century. My claim is evidenced by his hit recordings dating back to the early 1980’s, when my fellow brothers and I were sporting Afros. Prince may have been androgynous looking on stage but he was clearly a man among his peers behind the scenes. Who can forget Purple Rain, which introduce Morris Day and the Tyme, Sheila E,Terry Lewis, Jimmy Jam and my absolute favorite Appolonia. Yeah, I was and will remain a big fan. I now regret that I never saw his concert in person, but you can bet I will buy a copy of his last CD. In keeping with the tradition of the Editor’s Note, I would be remised if i failed to salute our cover story Monalisa Okojie. A jewelry designer and philanthropist, Monalisa leads a full and purpose driven life as a wife and mother. Her company, Nehita Inc., has provided support to many non-profit organizations in the United States and Africa. Popularly known as the bling queen to the stars, the late Whitney Houston (of blessed memory) being one of them, Monalisa is also the founder of an organization called Upward African Woman, a non-profit California based organization giving hope to disadvantaged women. The organization tackles issues of poverty, disease and illiteracy. There are many more exciting discoveries in this special Mother’s Day edition of Hollywood Weekly Magazine.

PRINCE 1958-2016
DEFINED THE SOUND OF THE ‘80S WITH SONGS LIKE “KISS” AND “PURPLE RAIN” AND DEFIED THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN A FIGHT FOR CREATIVE & FREEDOM
The 57-year-old singer was found unresponsive in an elevator at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson said. Prince’s publicist confirmed his death but didn’t provide details about the possible cause or who was with the musician. “It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning,” publicist Yvette NoelSchure said. Prince’s sound was as unique and transfixing as he was. He created what became known as the Minneapolis sound, which was a funky blend of pop, synth and new wave. The singer’s fame never waned through the decades, but he was considered synonymous with the 1980s. His fame reached a fever pitch with the 1984 film “Purple Rain,” about an aspiring musician, his troubled home life and a budding romance. He was a prolific musician. Between 1985 and 1992, he released eight albums, one per year, including the soundtrack for Tim Burton’s “Batman.” He starred in two more movies during that era: “Under the Cherry Moon” and “Graffiti Bridge.” He also put out a concert film. “Sign ‘o’ the Times” hit theaters in 1987. 6 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

He infamously changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol in the 1990s during a dispute with his record label, Warner Bros. He started to become known then as the “Artist Formerly Known as Prince.” In 2000, when the singer’s publishing contract with the company expired, he reclaimed the name Prince. Prince won seven Grammy Awards and earned 30 nominations. Five of his singles topped the charts and 14 other songs hit the Top 10. He won an Oscar for best original song score for “Purple Rain.” The singer’s predilection for lavishly kinky story-songs earned him the nickname “His Royal Badness.” He was also known as the “Purple One” because of his colorful fashions.

MONALISA
OKOJIE BY ALICIA CORBIN
MONALISA OKOJIE SHARES HER PASSION FOR CREATING JEWELRY, HER FRIENDSHIP WITH WHITNEY HOUSTON, AND WHY KINDNESS GOES A LONG WAY
wherever she goes. However, she is more than that; she is a global ambassador who uses her celebrity to give hope to those unfortunate and the lives she touches. Monalisa has made headlines as the creator of the Nehita jewelry line. Her jewelry and fashions have been worn by many American icons including the late, Whitney Houston and numerous A-List celebrities in film, television and music. Although educated with a degree in Law, Monalisa found her real métier as a designer jewelry and fashion accessories. Monalisa recently sat down for an interview with Hollywood Weekly Magazine to discuss her jewelry line, meeting Whitney Houston for the first time, and why kindness is so important.
HWM: “Where do you draw inspiration from when creating custom jewelry pieces?”
Monalisa Okojie is an Ishan Princess from Eguare, Irrua in Edo State, Nigeria. She recognized early in life that she was a privileged individual, receiving an education in a country where a secondary education for women is not that easy. She was born in Lagos and attended a private school in Lagos, and a Girls College in Calabar. She obtained her law degree from the University of Ekpoma and Barrister at Law from NLS Lagos. Known as the celebrity jeweler to the stars, Monalisa prefers the title of a patriotic Nigerian who represents her country

MONALISA : “ Two extremes right? My career as a designer started off as a passion. While I was working at a law firm in Los Angeles, I would create and design pieces for myself.” After approximately eight years of law practice, Monalisa decided to fulfil her dream as a jewelry designer. She began by attending school at the Gemological Institute of America, located in Culver City. There she immersed herself in the beauty and science of gems and the art of creating fine jewelry. MONALISA: “I tend to aspire to be somewhat of a perfectionist.” I realized early on the necessity of learning all about the art of jewelry design, color gems and diamonds. I wanted to go through the entire process. For me, this was an extremely interesting and fulfilling experience. Grammy award winning, pop icon, the late Whitney Houston, is just one of the high profile clients Nehita has served. Monalisa Okojie described her first encounter with Whitney as life changing and about how graceful, genuine and kind she was.
HWM: “What did it take to create a piece for Whitney Houston? How was that experience?” MONALISA: “I will always remember Whitney with great admiration and affection. The first time I met her, I realized I was in the presence of an iconic entertainer. It was daunting. She was very warm and, very down to earth in an extraordinary Monalisa was very young when she first discovered her love for creating jewelry. Monalisa has always been appreciative of the blessings of living a purpose driven life. She is a mother, a wife, an entrepreneur and a philanthropist who does not take privilege for granted. A couple of years ago, she founded a non profit organization called Upward African Woman. She managed to put together, a group of professional women who work in the fields of medicine, law, business and education, to support young, uneducated and exploited young women in West Africa.

MONALISA: “People can support Upward African Woman through our website, www.upwardafricanwoman.org or by way of volunteering, hosting fundraisers for us, adopting a student, family or child by supporting them financially. Everybody can give a little time or funds. A little kindness always goes a long way” HWM: “What do you envision for yourself next year or in five years. What are a few things that you are working on that you would like to see come to development?” MONALISA : “In terms of my business, I would like to see more exposure of the Nehita product line; the Nehita scarf or Nehita jewelry. J
odie Foster’s film about the financial crisis sees Jack O’Connell take the Ocean’s Eleven co-stars hostage on live TV. George Clooney and Julia Roberts find themselves at the mercy of a crazed Jack O’Connell in the first trailer for the thriller Money Monster.
Directed by Jodie Foster, the film pits Ocean’s Eleven actors Roberts and Clooney against the star of Angelina Jolie’s earnest Oscar-bait Unbroken, in a story that promises to make reference to the everwidening wealth gap in the US. O’Connell plays a blue-collar worker, driven to violence by his financial losses, who takes a TV presenter, played by Clooney, hostage while his money-centred show is live on air, before forcing him to strap on a bomb that could blow the studio sky-high. Roberts plays his understandably concerned producer. “It’s where your deepest, darkest shames evolve and play out in three acts,” Foster told Yahoo! “That’s something that’s very strong in the movie and that

smarmy Dominic West as the CEO of a company linked to the situation. In handling the financial crash, it follows the Oscartipped comedy drama The Big Short, which starred Christian Bale as a ruthless hedge-fund manager. Foster said she wanted Money Monster to showcase a system that is “rigged for the elite”.
A RAY OF HOPE FROM SOUTH INDIA
MR. VAKKANTHAM VAMSI VAKKANTHAM VAMSI, THE CELEBRATED SOUTH INDIAN SCRIPT-WRITER, IS ALL SET TO MAKE HIS MARK ON GLOBAL FILM HISTORY
18 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
Vamsi, 40, is the son of Vakkantham Suryanarayana Rao, the renowned Telegu writer, lyricist and screenwriter. Rao is the prolific author of over 80 books, including Navagraha Purana, the magnum opus which sold more than one hundred thousand copies and is being translated into English, Kannada, Tamil and Hindi. Vamsi embarked on his career as a media professional in 1995 with a stint as a newsreader on the Telegu news channel, ETV. He made his Tollywood film debut as a co-lead in Kalyanaprapthirasthu. Vamsi went on to act in television serials, returning to the silver screen in 2002 with the film Kalusukovalani. The turning point in his career was his entry into script writing with Ashok, featuring the popular star, NTR Jr. Ashok categorically established Vamsi’s script-writing credentials in the film industry and also cemented his close friendship with NTR Jr. Vamsi struck gold with the 2009 Kick, the blockbuster which was subsequently remade in Tamil, Kannada and Hindi, the last starring Salman Khan. He now has about a dozen acclaimed film scripts under his belt and is widely acknowledged to be one of South India’s most sought after film writers. His unconventional storyline for the 2015 NTR Jr starrer, Temper, a resounding critical and commercial success, garnered much appreciation. Vamsi is now poised to make his directorial debut with NTR Jr. Vamsi’s USP is his uncanny ability to meld sensitive characterization with the commercial elements required for box office success. His well-etched protagonists ably carry the plot’s denouement on their sturdy shoulders, leaving an indelible mark on the audience. Kalyan, in Kick, is a typically brash youth whose guiding philosophy is that any experience, in order to be truly worthwhile, must generate the thrill of excitement – in other words, give him a ‘kick!’ Lucky, Race Gurram’s protagonist, is a happy-go-lucky young man who has sibling issues with his elder brother. However, when his brother confronts a death threat, Lucky’s abiding love for him is ignited, giving the plot a delicious twist. In Temper, Daya, a corrupt police officer, evolves into a champion of justice. Whether in a family entertainer like Ashok, a tale of love and vengeance like Oosaravelli or a science fiction drama like Yevadu, Vamsi’s strong protagonists emerge as a potent amalgam of emotional vulnerability and personal courage which makes for gripping storylines and dramatic personality conflicts.
Always a pioneer, ready to take the road less travelled, Vamsi now has his eyes set on Hollywood. Vamsi holds that the intense emotional interplay and passions of family relationships are universal and transcend geographical and language barriers. He asserts that there is a receptive global audience for such Action, contemporary fiction and aims to step into the breach with scripts tailored to meet this demand. Vamsi is now engaged in scripting the English version of his blockbuster, Temper, for a global audience. Temper’s protagonist is the quintessential ‘bad cop’ who does not know the meaning of fear. He is ruthless, temperamental, quick to anger and takes the law into his own hands. He is also vulnerable to the power of love and finally heeds the call of justice. The film incorporates some poignant elements of Delhi’s Nirbhaya tragedy into its sub-plot. Reliable sources say that Vamsi’s script has been skillfully tweaked to cater to the expectations of an international, English-speaking audience. Several multinational studio houses in Asia have expressed keen interest in acquiring the film rights to the script. An agreement regarding Temper’s English remake is reportedly close in the offing. Temper promises to be a milestone in Eastern cinema and Vakkantham Vamsi is definitely a screenwriter who is headed towards the limelight of global filmdom.

MOA MALAN ACTRESS TRAINING
Just recently Moa Malan was nominated yet again for her fearless performance. This time participating in the Artemis Women in Action Film Festivals, a festival that highlights female heroes and powerful women taking action on the screen. In their own words they shine a spotlight on females in film who are fearless, fierce and revolutionary. It’s an honor to be represented at a festival among extremely talented women who’ve participated in amazing films and blockbusters. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PARTICULAR ROLE? When I was offered the role I thought to myself, I’m not a stuntwoman, this will be very interesting” and when the director started talking about potentially having a stunt double I said no. This is everything I’ve been looking for, something that will take me out of my comfort zone and elevate me as an actress. Taking on the role as Dina, Moa Malan studied a lot of the scenes and understood the importance early on of bringing the action into physical scenes such as fighting or you would lose the emotional part of the scene. In addition to the hard physical training she worked closely with an acting coach in order to naturally implement both the acting and fighting.

The film, REDEEM, is now being developed into a feature together with Eyeworks/Warner Bros Stockholm and they have asked Moa Malan to play the lead role in the feature as well, hoping it will be a stepping stone to work internationally. She also has other projects under development that she has been cast in. Moa Malan will aslo be part of the jury at the film festival “Alpinale” later this year.

INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT AGENCY
“I am extremely grateful to be working with Maria Vascsak at IMA. This relaunch of the revamped look of the agency really reflects what I have always felt with Vascsak and her management style. She is incredibly tuned in to, and in sync with, what is going on in the world of showbiz. I am lucky enough to feel a close connection with her as we work together daily on making the right choices for me. I know IMA has my best interest at heart and has the ability to promote me in a classy, non-pushy way, wherever the work is. She has grown this agency immensely in a short period of time, but it is, without a doubt, still very much an approachable, boutique agency with a killer head manager, Maria Vascsak, and logo!” –ACTRESS ELISE ROVINSKY
