When you enter Paul Kim’s “Concrete Loft” and experience downtown L.A.’s skyline through the giant floor to ceiling windows encircling this legendary space, don’t be surprised if you hear the Choral Finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony singing in your ears. Too dramatic? I’ll put it another way: if James Cameron decided to collaborate with IMAX and film a 3-D Documentary on downtown Los Angeles, the view from Paul’s Concrete Loft would be the opening shot… The Concrete Loft has literally been decorated and redecorated hundreds of times in a myriad of different styles and themes for every visual medium imaginable – photo shoots for top fashion magazines with A-List

Dior used the Concrete Loft to look like an upscale Manhattan Hotel for a photo shoot they were doing with Sharon Stone… Recalling this memory fondly, Paul pointed to a white bed in the corner of the Concrete Loft where we were talking and said (with a slight smile), “Yeah, Sharon Stone rolled all over my bed… It was great.” And as amazing as the Loft is, it’s only part of
what makes Paul Kim’s Image Locations such a fascinating company… Image Locations, the Agency, was born on April 1st, 2001. It was the brainchild of Paul Kim, who is a native Angeleno, and is the culmination of two extraordinary talents that Paul possesses: (1) he has an uncanny ability to spot business opportunities where most of us would
see nothing; and (2) Paul, more than anyone I’ve ever met, has an unwavering, personal interest in keeping people in Los Angeles employed… While scouting for the upcoming “Transformers 3,” Michael Bay needed some shots to represent Washington, D.C. Budget, let’s just say, is not really an issue for a Director like Michael Bay,

so it would have been very easy for him to pack up and fly to D.C., but why do that when Paul Kim can transform his Concrete Loft into the interior set Michael Bay needed, and CGI can be added to some of the partial views outside the windows – which is exactly what may happen, scoring one for Image Locations in getting local L.A. production workers the jobs instead…

own right. You couldn’t ask for a better staff, and they couldn’t ask for a better employer. Before my interview with Paul, Marisa, and my Publisher Prather Jackson got under way in the Concrete Loft, Paul told me as a point of pride that even during our recent recession he kept his entire staff employed, and all of them are covered with health and dental care. In addition, his company actually had one of their best years in 2009 – 3.6 million, which goes to show

that being cool and making money in big business aren’t mutually exclusive… So, why exactly was Paul’s Image Locations able to burst upon the scene and immediately grab hold of the movie and photography industry? Paul explained it best: “In the old days, a Production Manager would call a scout up and ask them to find a particular location. That guy would go out and take pictures – then take the time to develop
those pictures, put them in a manila folder and FedEx them back. The digital camera changed the business. You now had an image instantaneously. Using the internet to e-mail those digital photos of locations made everything move faster. But we have an added edge: everyone in my company has some kind of artistic background, primarily photography and production, so we know how to get in, take the best possible shots that represent the location for the Production
Managers or Fashion Editors, and send them out quickly... So, it’s the speed of the technology, our ability to utilize that technology, and maximizing our artistic backgrounds to get the job done efficiently that sets us apart…” And what are some of the “jobs” that Image Locations gets done? In the fashion industry alone, if you went to a newsstand looking to buy every magazine Image Locations hasn’t worked on, you probably wouldn’t spend very much money… Vogue, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, People Magazine, OK! Magazine, In Style, FHM, Allure and Elle just to name a few… As for the “models” on some of these covers – Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey, Jr.
of the production – translation: Steven Spielberg might very well be exclusively looking for a dilapidated shack, in which case, if you own one, hooray for Hollywood! Image Locations, however, does generally tend to gravitate toward the more “modern-looking” homes, so, the loyal devotion you have for your “hovel,” notwithstanding, it probably won’t make the cut… Surprisingly, many celebrity

Cool J., a pregnant Maya Rudolph, Taylor Swift, The Jonas Brothers, Amanda Seyfried, Jaime Pressly, Heidi Klum, Tony Hawk, Ashley Greene, Megan Fox, Kate Winslet, Zoe Saldana and the cast of Entourage… Many popular cable and television series have worked with Image Locations, Showtime’s “Californication” and ABC’s “Castle” being the most recent… And, of course, there’s the movie industry – the aforementioned “Transformers 3” being a highlight, as well as Judd Apatow’s upcoming “Get Him To The Greek.” Music Videos have become a fixed feature in
homes are part of Image Locations’ library… For shooting feature films, television and cable series, commercials, music videos or magazine layouts, signing up with Image Locations could be a great source of extra income for many L.A. homeowners… Anyone wanting to take a closer look at Image Locations can find them easily on either your iPhone or Blackberry by accessing their application – all part of Paul Kim’s overall vision of keeping his
Image Locations repertoire; they just worked with Justin Bieber and Sean Kingston, and Beyonce’s latest music video was shot at a home in Hollywood Hills, which is part of Image Location’s vast “library…” This brings to mind an interesting question which hundreds of Angelenos call Image Locations every day to find out: how can you get your house featured in movies or fashion magazines? Of course, if your home was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, as some of the homes in Image Locations’ library are, you’re a clear candidate… For everyone else, Paul stresses that the home should be “architecturally unique.” He did admit, though, that any home can technically work, because it’s all about the needs
company as current and accessible as possible… What Paul has actually created with Image Locations is a harmonious balance of environmental awareness, economic sensitivity to our L.A. workforce, and a company that has transformed and elevated the business of location scouting to “fine art.” In short, he has composed a symphonic world befitting of the title “Beethoven’s 10th…”

CA: Its’ been two months since the earthquake? How is everything? We don’t hear much of what is going on now. JJL: Not much has been done actually. There are thousands of people outside sleeping in tents. Its’ the rainy seasonthe conditions are bad. There is international help but not enough. No one was prepared for it. A lot of time is needed on what to do now. There is food distribution for the locals. Most of the houses have been untouched. There is a lot of rubble and its’ very difficult for big machines and bulldozers to get into the areas. There is no access. Right now, there is short term construction and there is construction for stronger roofs to prepare for hurricane season in September. CA: This must be incredibly stressful on you. How have you managed? JJL: Its’ been overwhelming. For many reasons. I’m expected to be a hero. (laughs) The day of the earthquake, my phone was going crazy. People were asking me “What are you going to do?” I left two days after the earthquake to start filming again for my documentary. Days went by where I didn’t have any news about my parents. It was very stressful. I knew I had to be there. All I could do was hope for the best. These next few months will be a time to rebuild Haiti. Haiti has no electricity, no running water. JJL: I founded the organization two years ago for the Hollywood community to look at Haiti. Being in Hollywood has put me in a position where I can make a difference. There are people speaking out for Sudan, for Rowanda, it was time for Haiti. I took many trips with celebrities including Paul Haggis, Olivia Wilde, and many others to show them what is happening there. Our mission is to help the underpriviledged kidsfor them to have sports, culture, and art. We are building a facility in the area that will be free for kids that can’t afford schooling. Schools have now collapsed. We want to be able to have kids continue their lives. I have met with officials and ambassadors there on what we can keep doing. Tony Roberts
Giving You The Raw Truth byToria Gaylord
It is every comic’s dream to have an extraordinary breakout year and 2010 is proving to be comedian Tony Roberts time. With the success of his recent Showtime standup comedy special, Tony Roberts: Wired (the CD drops May 4); he’s also the new host of VH1’s Dance Cam Slam; appeared in a new Simmons-Lathan produced comedy show for Comedy Central and plans to release his first comedy album this fall. The comedian, actor and writer is hard at work ready to show the world what he can do. Speaking by phone from his South Carolina hotel Friday, Roberts said he is happy with the progress of his career.
the cuff.” He cherishes those moments where he can take his fans on a wild comedic ride that they simply adore.
Since making his comedic debut in the late 90’s, Tony Roberts has become a household favorite among black and white audiences and has proven he is a force to be reckoned with. Whether performing stand-up at Caroline’s or The Laugh Factory, starring in films or entertaining worldwide, the funnyman’s name is synonymous with quick wit, boundless energy, hilarious songs and vigorous physical comedy. But if you ask the comedian he’ll tell you, he’s just doing what he loves. “I’m quick on my feet,” says the star, “I love to live off
And his diligence is paying off. Tony has dominated the comic circuit, routinely featured on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam; BET’s Comic View, Showtime at the Apollo and received the Robin Harris Award for Most Original Comic. In September 2009, he became a major player when nominated, alongside Chris Rock for the Best International Comic Award in the UK. From Detroit’s Seven Mile, Roberts’s story is authentically American. Growing up in a traditional middle class family,
he is the youngest and has five older sisters. One might think the comedian was a handful for his parents; but the opposite rang true. “I was a very shy kid growing up,” he explained. “I never was a prankster.” His parents were devout Christians and he had a strict, disciplined upbringing. After high school, he wanted to become an artist. Sketching portraits to make ends meet, he eventually decided to go into the military. There he began to tell jokes to the other soldiers as a way to boast morale. During his time in the service, he became a Sergeant and was well known as one of the funniest people in the Army. He owes much of

his success to the military. “Comedy can be a tough industry and you have to have the will and dedication to see it through,” says Roberts, “I still carry a military mentality in my everyday life and it helps in getting things done.” Roberts confesses he uses tough love with family and friends at times but believes in giving you the raw truth. He attributes his physical comedic style to Sinbad, who like Roberts has immeasurable liveliness on stage. “When I first started out, I saw him (Sinbad) perform and he was all over the place. Sinbad broke the mold for me. Because of him, I learned how to unleash my fury on stage.” The stage is where Roberts feels most content. He loves the connection he has with his audiences and never wants to stop playing for crowds. He greatly respects late comic legends Robin Harris and Bernie Mac for never losing the love of the stage while acting in movies and television. But some of his greatest influences are local talent. “Some of the best jokes I hear come from unknowns. You have some real geniuses out there waiting to be discovered.” Known in the industry as the comedian’s comedian, Roberts mentors’ rising comics by helping them develop jokes, make connections or even give advice, but he never shy’s away from telling you the reality of the business. “A comic’s life is competitive but there’s enough success for everyone. It takes time to develop your skill. You spend most of your time writing and are constantly on the road but if you’re determined, you will succeed.” There is little doubt that comedy is big business and for several decades, black comedians have been a major driving force behind it. Tony knows life as a comic is hard and sometimes harder for a black comedian, but if you have the talent, the passion and drive for it you can make it happen. Although Roberts has appeared in almost a dozen movies, he wants to focus on serious acting roles, eventually transitioning into actioncomedies or drama. While one of his dreams is to work on an actioncomedy with superstar Wesley Snipes, he likes the career paths of Jamie Foxx and someday wants to be known as the African-American Robin Williams. When home in LA, the comic studies with acclaimed acting couch Ivana

Chubbuck, whose past students include Oscar winners Halle Berry and Charlize Theron as well as Brad Pitt and Terrance Howard. He understands that in order to get the serious dramatic roles, it is important to know the craft and Tony is not afraid of it. Renowned director, David Steinberg called him a breakout star after catching one of his shows and would later cast him in a series of commercials. As Roberts sees it, acting is a natural progression for a comic’s career. When offered the role to play an overzealous television producer for the stage play, “If These Walls Could Talk” starring Tichina Arnold and Billy D. Williams in 2004, it was a chance of a lifetime. Roberts felt it was his first taste of real acting. The 30-city tour was such a success even director Tyler Perry caught the play in three different cities and sat in the front row. Roberts stood out as the crowd favorite and during intermission got a chance to perform his set for the audience. When he is not performing Roberts enjoys spending quality time with his wife Kellie and their three children. A lover of great food, he regularly travels to Oakland to his favorite place, the famous Everett and Jones Barbeque Restaurant in Oakland. Tony insists owners Mary and Dorothy make the best barbeque in the world. Under the creative direction of the WTA agency, Tony is thrilled with his new management team, agent Larry Williams (Owner, Theatrical) and booking agent, Phil Brown (Partner, Head of Personal appearance and Touring). With his many accomplishments, the comedian takes it all in stride. “This business is based on faith and God’s plan and I am very grateful.” Family is what keeps him grounded and lives by the motto, “Never boast about yourself, but let others be proud of you.” His message is simple. He is doing what he loves most, which is to make you laugh. He appreciates his audiences and loves the sounds of the fans cheering him on. Roberts says, “It’s a wonderful feeling to say something that makes everyone laugh. It is the greatest joy. There’s nothing better than laughter… well maybe sex.” Tony Roberts is undeniably leaving his mark in the comedy world and trailblazing his own unique path to success. It is no doubt you are witnessing a star on the rise.

Spotlight On:
Actor On The Rise Josh Emerson 1) What was it like for you to step foot in Los Angeles for the first time? ANSWER: Definite culture shock. The air is different! When I got out of the terminal I saw palm trees. We don’t have many of those up in Canada. The great thing was I had already shot three major motion pictures up in Vancouver, so I was very fortunate to come down to Los Angeles as an already in-demand actor.
2) What has been the most “LA” moment for you so far? ANSWER: I was sitting in a movie theater with my good friend Jason Director (screenwriter of “Jenny Green’s Killer
22 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
Freshman Year”), waiting for the film to begin. We were talking about Terrance Mallick, when this guy in front of us joined in on our conversation. He told us he acted in “The Thin Red Line” and that he knew “Terry” pretty well. I told him I was attached to his step-son, Will Wallace’s, project last year but never got to meet him. The guy said, “Really? That was MY project. I’m Will!” We became great friends.
3) I saw you and Hayden Panettiere with your fans at the “I Love You, Beth Cooper” premiere. You were both so generous with them. What’s your view concerning the rapport
By: Niki Shadrow
between artist and fan? ANSWER: Great question. This is the most important thing in my career. Abe Lincoln said, “I am a man of the people, by the people and for the people”. Without my fans I can’t do what I wanna do. If they say no I don’t work. I’m a huge people person. At The Toronto Film Fest I was leaving an event and this homeless woman pulled me over and said I was the nicest person there. All it takes is five seconds, and you can make someone’s entire day. If we can’t find the time to do that it’s pretty shoddy. So I pride myself on that.
4) What recent film of yours has resonated most with you?
ANSWER: I would have to say a small art piece I shot with Will Wallace entitled “A Song For The Dead”. It will be premiering at the Edmonton Film Festival. I played the lead role, Sheldon. His predicament was one I could really relate to. Most people would view him as the villain, but I saw him as misled. He’s rough around the edges, and I felt in like I could relate to that.
5) Any parts you’d like to tackle in the future? ANSWER: One word: “Venom”. I shot a teaser with me in the black SpiderMan suit that Venom wears. I’ve read Spider-Man since I was a kid. Despite Venom’s evil origins, he’s a protector of innocents. Everyone seems to miss that. Like I mentioned, I’m attracted
to misunderstood characters. Plus, I’ve been told I look like Venom’s alter-ego Eddie Brock, so that helps.
7) What question are sick of being asked?
6) You just starred in “Tooth Fairy” opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Ashley Judd. Who would win in a cage match...you or the “The Rock”?
ANSWER: “What was it like to make out with Megan Fox?”. By a long mile. Starring alongside Megan in “Jennifer’s Body” (and speaking Diablo Cody’s dialogue no less) was a fantasy come true, and it’s getting better every day!
ANSWER: I consider Dwayne one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. He’s strong, but I can keep him away with my MMA (mixed martial arts) training. On our feet: me. On the ground: Dwayne would definitely have the upper hand. But truth be told, Ashley Judd would wipe the floor with both of us!

Step into Summer Style And, step into a new,
139,000-square foot Nordstrom by NIKI SHADROW
Stock up on sunglasses, get your spray tan on, and bare some leg: summer is on its way and it’s time to lighten up that wardrobe. From bursts of blossoming florals to an array of neon bright hues to the clean look of silver jewelry, the season is brimming with fresh style potential. And, just in time to hit the aisles, Los Angeles has a new shopping spot with the May 7 opening of an additional wing of Los Cerritos Center. True Religion, M.A.C. Cosmetics, Love Culture and a new and improved larger format Nordstrom, are just a handful of the stores you will find. Nordstrom is opening its new store in high style – with a bevy of parties. See full details below. As always, a smattering of the looks from the runways this spring toe the line between wearable and “what?!” Let’s take a second look at those tricky trends that may have made you squirm at first sight and talk about the best places to get them.
Beige or Bland?
Creamy tans, perfect putty, barely beige and soft pink blush are the season’s new primary colors - think Twilight starlet Anna Kendrick at this year’s Oscars, with her Elie Saab Haute Couture off-the-shoulder gown in delicate light pink. Crisp and sophisticated, the look is the epitome of spring - dewy and new – and perfect for summer. Just make sure to find the tipping point between washed out “blah”, and “look at her – wow!”
Here’s the magic formula for “wow”: “A” - Start with the right tone of nude for your skin. The only true way to know if it’s a color match made in heaven is to try that baby on. If you look flushed and glowing – it’s a yes; if you look one step away from sudden illness - pass. Also good tip to note – nudes typically look best if they are one shade darker than your natural skin color. “B” - And also just as important - breathe some extra life into this trend by grounding it with a splash of vivid color. Pick a magenta cage heel or a bold teal cuff; the edgy contrast makes the look. From a cocktail party little nude dress, to everyday shorts and tee combo, this “A” plus “B” always equals sensational. Banana Republic at The Oaks has a sweet selection of tops and dresses in these now neutrals, and get your pop of color with one of their trend forward turquoise necklaces or bracelets (from $29.50 to $45).
26 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
“Wear” to go to get a romper? Nordstrom is a hot spot hands down ($42 to $258), and lucky us, a larger sparkling new one is replacing the old location at Los Cerritos Center, opening for business on May 7: If you’re “that” kind of shopper that prides yourself on being in-the-know ahead
of the rest, come scope out the new locale at one of three sneak preview parties. April 24: The store kicks off its party circuit with “Nordstrom Fits America” - an all-day bra fitting extravaganza that benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Get yourself professionally outfitted and get a private glimpse of the new lingerie department.
Double Denim. Erase all memories of the jean on jean looks of yesteryear, and focus on the here and now. This is not the color coordinated head to toe number you rocked in elementary school; the look is varied in texture and wash, hue and cut. Choose top and bottom pieces in varying shades to avoid looking like you escaped a chain gang. Try a chambray shirt with a slightly darker pair of distressed boyfriend jeans, cuffed at the hem. Or pair your light wash jean jacket with a gray-blue pair of skinnies, like Jessica Alba’s casual out-n-about look she sported early this year while lunching with her family. Even easier belt a light denim shirt dress and slip on some strappy cork heeled sandals.
May 4: Nordstrom’s Opening Night Gala gives party-goers an exclusive chance to tour the entire new store while feasting on dinner, dessert and cocktails, and of course, get a jump start on some serious shopping. Tickets are $75, and proceeds go back to yet another great couple of causes - the Community Family Guidance Center and the Long Beach Museum of Art.
May 7: On official Opening Day, Nordstrom is hosting an all out Beauty Bash just inside the main doors. Stop by as they dish on new products and trends, take advantage of a few gifts with purchase, and check out some makeup demos by Nordstrom’s very own beauty advisors. For more information about these events go to the Los Cerritos Center Web site at www.shoploscerritos.com..
Whichever denim you do, stay away from accessories in black and cool tones; instead, warm it up with toneddown tans, and cinnamon browns. Gap’s new line of denim, called 1969, has the sass you’d expect from $200 jeans, but go for just $59.50; you can find them at Lakewood Center.
taking the plunge – start now and get this trend right.
Romper Room. Get ready for the twofor-one style shebang – the romper. Back on the fashion scene as of last year, this dressy n’ short jumpsuit has yet to reach its peak; expect this onesuit wonder to be even bigger for 2011. So take a hint from stars like Kourtney Kardashian, who suited up in a coral Free People romper in Miami Beach this spring and whether you’ve wrangled a few on before, or are newly considering
Rule two – pick fabrics in tame tones and muted prints. Instead, pick that bright yellow floral bib necklace, or that jade mini clutch, and let your accessories jazz it up. A loud romper is like bad elevator muzak – a crime. Rule three - Finally, don’t go out on the town looking like you’re wearing a newborn’s onesie, make it a grown-up outfit and pair it with some killer wedge heels.
Rule one – keep it somewhere between body skimming and body hiding. A romper with some movement in it – think soft and floaty over your hips and backside - is most flattering.

To avoid being called into your boss’s office for a closed door session, keep this trend tame and conservative for the workplace. Pick a lace trimmed cami or a bustier with structured boning, maybe in black or cream, and tuck it under your favorite suit. Key on this one is - make sure the top covers everything it’s supposed to - and let the allure of the lace or flattering lines of the bustier speak to the trend.
Upscale underthings. Before you start digging through your personal bedtime collection or clamoring for shopping time at the lingerie stores that mark every corner in Hollywood, take note - these aren’t your modern bra and undies, nor are they the nighttime variety. The right look is old school vintage and is meant to be worn outside of the bedroom. Since wearing your underpinnings on the street can easily go wrong, this trend requires some serious schooling on subtlety, as well as a little direction about how to wear it, and when. Here are a few tips on the finer points of dressing in delicates:
Whether it’s red carpet or just black tie, you can still try on this sultry look. Celebrities at the Golden Globes are always a step ahead of the upcoming trends, and this year was no different. Numerous celebrities stepped out in lingerie inspired gowns. Actress Marion Cotillard’s dark green satin Christian Dior dress was divine. To get wear this style -- pick an evening gown with a high slit and play peek-a-boo with a lace slip that just barely shows. Don’t be afraid to rock a red carpet look for everyday; nothing highlights your inner movie starlet like a short lace solid colored dress that can take you from day to night. Angl, Westside Pavilion carries several of these types of dresses, and you can relax as you
don’t have to be a movie star to afford this trend, with prices ranging from $30 to $60.
Corsets for courting.
Let the boudoir lead the way, step into a slinky slip dress or lace up a slimming corset top and put your heels on. Look for lingerie color combinations, pink with black lace, classic black and white or dip into this season’s bright colors and try on something in aqua or fuchsia. There are a ton of sexy corset tops, and great slip style dresses at Forever 21,Los Cerritos Center for around $20.
Sheer fun for the weekend.
For a weekend around town, or a relaxed lunch out, have fun flaunting the feminine with a little something sheer. Ranging from conservative to daring, you’ll find skirts and dresses coming in a wide assortment of levels of sheer and length varying from mini to maxi – pick the one you feel most comfortable in and wear over a slightly shorter opaque layer. Or, try a sheer roomy top and layer it with a simple tank or tube top paired with denim. Angl, Westside Pavilion has a wide variety of lingerie inspired pieces with sheer tops ranging from $16 to $25. Photographer: Jason Gordon Stylist: Crystal Fambrini

Spotlight On:
WWA Gallery By: Niki Shadrow
In recent years, Culver City has developed from an often overlooked pit-stop on the way to Venice Beach to a bustling, trendy Los Angeles landmark worthy of a trip unto itself. With a flurry of new restaurants and citywide events, the little city that could is becoming a major player on the cultural map. In accordance with all the new foot traffic, Culver City’s thriving art scene continues to flourish. On Washington Blvd., the Corey Helford Gallery hosts monthly galas that are usually as notable for who’s in attendance as they are for whose artwork adorns the walls. Just a few blocks down the street from Helford, the renowned Blum & Poe gallery operates out of a new building that’s more or less the size of a college library. And right in the heart of Downtown Culver City, an art gallery that once specialized in animation is making significant headway into the world of contemporary art. The name of the relative newcomer is WWA gallery. On the outside it’s a quirky, stylish storefront with frosted windows and a unique, bubbly red and black design. The inside is spacious and curvy, with the art divided between three inviting, open areas. As early as last year, WWA’s forte was hard-to-find animation art. The gallery’s owner, Debbie Weiss, an expert in animation art, ran a successful online business that filtered into the gallery space, which featured Disney animation cels and the work of illustrators like Bill Waterson and Dr. Seuss. But all that’s changed over the past year. Weiss, along with her team of Stephanie Chefas, Rob Faucette, and David Radford, has decided to maintain her online business and restructure the gallery space to focus on contemporary art. Now is definitely the time to make such a move. After all, animation has become more than just an entertainment
(left to right) Jacob Osborn, Stephanie Chefas, and artist, Jason Cullison medium, but a full blown influential force. Disney films, Japanese anime, children’s book illustrations, and assorted other forms of animation have seeped into the collective unconscious and the result is a movement known as popsurrealism, which combines the otherworldly machinations and characters of the animated world with the mythical and psychological gravity of early surrealists like Bosch and more recent artists like Dali. Perhaps because of its imaginative background in animation, WWA brings a fairly unique perspective to the current scene. For example, their recent show “The Devil Made Me Do It”, asked contributing artists to consider the devil and sin and anything else associated with the phrase, and offer a visual interpretation. The result was a fascinating glimpse into the dark and light nether regions of the soul via the minds and brushes of artists like Bob Dob, Lily Mae Martin, David M. Ball, and Dave Cooper. Opening night featured devilish blues music, and paintings that ranged from grim murder in a dark cave to a mischievous colorful bear who gave his friend a bad haircut. The show itself was curated by WWA’s own Chefas, Faucette, and Radford, who go by the team name Industrial Squid. “The Devil Made Me Do It” was just one of many inventive shows on tap for this year. The most recent show, entitled “LA 3010”, offered artist interpretations of Los Angeles in a thousand years. Upcoming exhibitions include themes such as “I Believe in Unicorns” and “Horrorwood”. Amidst an art scene bursting with new activity, the WWA gallery is making its mark.

CHRISTINE YOUNG ACTRESS, SINGER & MODEL
Bringing A New Kind Of Sexy Back… By Anthony Calderon
… You have to understand, when it came to female models, being sexy used to be enough. It really was. A gorgeous woman was the endall to every man’s desire, and would simultaneously set a new standard other women would dream of becoming… But it was all fantasy… Nobody really wanted to know anything personal, per se, about a sexy model, we just wanted to look… Perhaps in the back of our minds we believed women who were that incredibly attractive were just too busy being beautiful to ever really care about anything else other than…well, being beautiful…
36 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
Then along came Angelina Jolie. Sexy as hell. Talented enough to win a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role in Girl, Interrupted (1999) – but forget about all that: she was Lara Croft (2001, 2003) for God’s sake! Wearing tight leather pants, no less! Just killing us! And then Angelina did a funny thing: she began caring about the world… What a concept! She was actually concerned with how people were living across the Globe, when she didn’t have to… There’s never been a clear correlation between bringing awareness to kids starving in Africa, and the gross movie ticket sales of any given actress…Yet, Angelina did care, and, of course, still does… This is the new standard… But you can’t fake compassion, because people can
tell “lip service” from action. The public knows the “Real Thing” when they see it, which leads me to Christine Young… The first time I saw Christine Young’s picture was in the boardroom of our Wilshire office for Hollywood Weekly… A group of Editors were huddled around the conference table where Christine’s photos were being looked at with such concentration I felt I almost needed to snap my fingers to break their trance… Once I broke through their inner huddle, however, and glanced at Christine’s pictures, I realized why my coworkers had been hypnotized – Christine is that rare blend of being fantastically sexy, yet extremely pretty…
There’s an almost innocent beauty in Christine’s face that works well with her insanely perfect body. This was a girl I had to talk to, so I pulled rank and snagged the interview with her… The first thing I discovered when I interviewed Christine was that she is a former Miss Teen Hawaii, which is an amazing accomplishment since everybody knows Hawaii – generally acknowledged worldwide – is full of beautiful women… But Christine has true facial beauty, so it’s not very surprising she would win that crown… Christine’s modeling career began in her teens, as well, when a Modeling Agent saw her in a restaurant and approached the natural beauty about working for a professional modeling company… Since that time, Christine has worked steadily as a model, and, of course, as Christine grew, her body…changed, you could say… She was no longer just a pretty face – she was a woman whose body spelled s-e-x-u-a-l-i-t-y in every language known to man… Which is what you see now… But just as looking into a diamond always reveals some new angle of beauty, Christine’s talent has deeper layers… Christine is, and has always been, an actress… As a student of Method Acting, and a true lover of film in general, even citing the movies of Frank Capra as some of her favorites, Christine has already risen in ranks to lead actress. “In God’s Hands” showcased what many already knew about Christine – she is the next big breakout Star. She even shares the mantle of the very few who can actually call themselves a Triple Threat, because in addition to Christine’s Modeling and Acting – she’s a singer! Though, too shy to actually compare her vocal styling to anyone currently on the music scene, I think some of Mariah Carey’s magic may have rubbed off on her when she worked on Mariah’s “I’ll Be Loving You Long Time” video… But now we come to Christine’s embodiment of the example set by Angelina Jolie… Let’s take something simple, like America’s new push towards anything “Green.” Christine just so happens to be the Executive Director for Fireworks Hawaii, an organization that provides “Earth - friendly” fireworks for concerts, parties and sporting events -and every 4th of July, they even put on a Show for the Mayor of Honolulu. Christine’s also the Vice President of Westside Athletic Foundation (WAF), which is a non profit company that assists youth sports organizations on the Waianae

Coast, from Nanakuli through Makaha, and in their normal course of business promote “healthy family activities, good citizenship, and encourage education and higher learning.” Once again, this isn’t something that Casting Agents need to see on Christine’s resume, it’s something she feels the need to do… But, let’s get back to Christine’s body – you can’t be that physically fit and not be into Sports, and if you know anything about Christine, she likes to be involved in things firsthand. So – and here’s yet another title – Christine is Vice President of X-1 World Events , which is a Mixed Martial Arts company delivering Live
arena-based entertainment on Time Warner Cable, sports on demand, HDNET, MSNBC, Fox network, and Live streaming via Internet… And here you thought Christine was just another Sexy Model… So, finally, here’s the question I have for a woman who sings, acts, and is sexy enough to model swimsuits in MAXIM UK – does Christine Young really have to “care” about anything else other than her soaring career? Of course she doesn’t have to, the answer is: she just does… It’s part of the beautifully complex person Christine is, and we’re all the more better for it…

Min Delicious ACTRESS & MODEL
A Breeze Of Sweet, Southern Sexuality By Anthony Calderon
I wouldn’t say I have an “addictive” personality… I’m a fairly moderate guy… A couple beers and I’m good… Another bottle of wine? No, thank you… Another round of Blackjack? No, I’m done – I’ll quit while I’m ahead… That’s really the kind of guy I am…
So, I was more than a little surprised at my behavior when I was e-mailed Actress/ Model Mindi Stoots’ Model Mayhem page (http://www.modelmayhem.com/763088). Now, you must know, in my defense, my subsequent obsession with Mindi’s photos was not entirely my fault… It seemed the Universe was working surreptitiously against me… As her Model Mayhem page opened up, and I saw Mindi standing there in her sky-blue, two-piece swimsuit – with one perfectly tanned leg propped up— my neighbor just so happened to start playing The Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women!” Through my open window I heard that unmistakable funky cowbell clanking before that bass drum kicked in… At this point, my hand was already starting to shake a little, but I managed to click on the lone picture of Mindi – a second later the screen was filled with image
38 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
after image of Mindi in garments and poses so erotic, so visceral in nature, I instinctually turned off my cell phone, locked my home/office door, grabbed a bottle of tequila and settled in for one hell of a ride! And as I stated before, the Universe was absolutely setting me up – my neighbor had that Rolling Stones song on repeat, so I drank, danced in my chair, and went through every picture of Mindi on all three pages! Then it was “Watch – And Repeat!” Over and over and over… When I finally turned
my phone back on I had 18 messages, mostly from coworkers wondering what the hell happened to me, since I was supposed to call them back once I saw Mindi’s picture… Christ, that was hours ago when I was still sober! Believe me when I say my experience looking at Mindi’s photos was not an isolated incident, as the thousands of viewers who’ve seen and commented on her photos will attest to… There’s something completely captivating about
Mindi – it starts with those large, brown bedroom-eyes, and ends with that curve on the edge of her smile that hints at a mischievous – but purely flirtatious nature… It’s that beautiful mix of Southern Charm and Sexuality… You don’t really see Mindi, she sort of just “washes over you,” like a breeze, and you’re left with her essence, like gold collected in a mining pan… What I didn’t know until I talked to Mindi, was just how business-savvy she actually is… As a Graduate from the University of Memphis, with a B.A. in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing, Mindi selectively chooses every picture of herself to portray a different mood, or character, to cover as many genres of photography as possible… Portraying different characters is something that comes easily to Mindi, as she has serious aspirations for acting – but not serious acting… Action acting… As a huge, actionmovie fan, Mindi is waiting for the role that allows her to kick a lot of ass on-screen, and as many of her photos demonstrate exceedingly well, Mindi’s got the look to get the job done… But Mindi also has a great sense of humor, which allows her to make fun of everything – including herself… This particular personality trait works well with photographers, who love the fact that at the end of the day, Mindi is just a sweet, sexy Southern girl who’s not trying to play the prima donna role so many models feel they need to portray… So, what is Mindi actually like when she’s shooting these ridiculously sexy photos – Mindi’s pictures with famed photographer Michael Vincent being some of the most scintillating I’ve seen.. If there’s one thing anybody who knows Mindi will tell you, she LOVES to dance. Which means a photo shoot with Mindi is nothing but a Party! Her music of choice for posing? Lady GaGa, Britney Spears – primarily female performers, because Mindi will literally embody the attitude of the song, and take it over as her own – at least in her head – while she’s bumping and grinding and setting the photo shoot on FIRE… Success has come fairly easy for Mindi, having already worked with the top photographers in her home state of Tennessee, taking photo jobs in Florida, and even working here in California, with the aforementioned Michael Vincent.
Mindi Stoots can be booked via UEM Management at 310-836-2446 or via email at modelmgr@gmail.com
Mindi’s niche has always been, in her own words, “the ability to change from sweet and innocent to sexy and seductive in a matter of seconds…” Those sound like some intense nanoseconds… But that’s Mindi’s appeal – is she a good girl with a bad streak, or a bad girl with an ounce of good… Personally, I’d say she has the ounce of good, but that could just be the tequila talking…
The bottom line is for a Director, a Casting Director, or a Photographer, Mindi Stoots can become whoever you want her to be on film… She’s the world’s sexiest chameleon…with a heart of Southern Love… There is, however, one character Mindi’s fans are anxiously waiting for her to become… Here are a few clues for you: A cotton tail, long ears, lives in a Mansion with a guy named H***

Maryann Murray ACTRESS & MODEL
Just SEXY Enough And FIERCE Enough To Conquer It All By Anthony Calderon
Lee Strasberg once said that out of the hundreds and hundreds of actors and actresses he worked with at his world renowned Actor’s Studio, only two people stood out to him: one was Marlon Brando – the other was Marilyn Monroe… And, there you have it -- Marilyn Monroe, a serious artist... Most people only know Monroe from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How To Marry A Millionaire (1953), or The Seven Year Itch (1955), but under her own production company, 40 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
Marilyn Monroe Productions, Monroe acted in Bus Stop (1956), where her Golden Globe nominated performance had The New York Times declare, “Marilyn Monroe has finally proved herself an actress.” Of course, the public wasn’t ready to acknowledge Marilyn Monroe as a businesswoman, entrepreneur and award-winning actress (Monroe won the 1960 Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Some Like It Hot), and the rest, as we say, is history… But times have changed – public attitudes have changed -- and the idea of a woman being blessed with incredible beauty, and
equally matched with solid talent has now manifested itself in the form of a six foot blonde, blue-eyed actress from Texas, named Maryann Murray… Many of you may recognize Maryann from her numerous modeling appearances, like earning the Cover of both Envy Magazine, and the popular My-Table publication in Houston, Texas… She was also featured in Teeny B Catalogues, and at www.TeenyB. com, she’s their Cover Girl – a role that suits Maryann well… Maryann just has that Star Quality that people can’t get enough of – how about being hand-picked as the
main Model for Corona on an ad campaign that had posters of Maryann throughout Mexico. The line used to go “A face to remember,” but in Maryann’s case, it’s a “Complete Package To Remember…” Long legs, flawless skin, dizzying curves – one look at Maryann is equivalent to the thrilling sensation of riding a rollercoaster, And yet, there’s more… A college-educated, classically trained theatre actress, Maryann has never been content at just being gorgeous, but America has always been in the “Beauty Business,” and it’s in this genre where Maryann first cut her teeth in the modeling world, eventually reaching the zenith of her career by becoming a Playboy model, and appearing in almost every variation possible – Playboy’s Natural Beauties, Playboy’s Fresh Faces, Playboy’s Girls Of The Big 12, and Playboy’s September Cybergirl… If you’re an Ed Hardy fan like the rest of the world, you’ll remember her from the Ed Hardy Intimates Runway, but in the end, Maryann was born for television and film. She first came to our attention when we saw her on the Playboy Morning Show, since then it seems she’s been everywhere – acting on “Tapout” last December, with more episodes pending, and also being chosen for their catalogues and posters…
Maryann can be booked via UEM Management at 310-836-2446 or via email at modelmgr@gmail.com
Then she embodied every man’s fantasy as a Bikini Girl on Anthony Michael Hall’s “The Dead Zone.” Maryann continued her Swimsuit domination on Mav T.V.’s “Bikini All-Stars” Reality Show… Most of Maryann’s roles can be seen on her MySpace page at www.myspace.com/ maryannmurray. Maryann’s even taken time to appear in Trent Turner and the Moon Towers “Smooth” Video, where she was, of course, the Lead Girl and Love Interest. So, with Modeling, Hosting and
Television Acting under her belt, what genre of Media is there left for Maryann to conquer? The obvious choice is Film, and the rule in Hollywood is no one talks about upcoming projects until all the contracts are signed, so Maryann kept quiet on the subject, but it’s not hard to imagine Casting Directors scrambling for her number…but why limit it just to Casting Directors, as any man who’s ever met Maryann will tell you, she’s a woman whose number is in demand…

A place safe enough for Couture By: Brea Tisdale
I pride myself on being someone that is always finding really unique “one of kind” vintage pieces of clothing. The thing about buying these “unique” pieces is that you don’t always/can’t really wear them without having them cleaned first, because honestly who knows where they have been…(Really who wants to know)? But, I get really nervous about taking my stuff to the cleaners…who hasn’t had your favorite one-of-a-kind coat ruined or misplaced…. I sure have! Recently however, I found a place that is different then all the rest…. Beverly Crest Cleaners.
“Joe- blow” service. Beverly Crest caters to upper estate/ celebrity clientele as well as studios. Which I know you are thinking so what, who cares…? Well I do and so should you frankly. As you may or may not know, most celebrities don’t have time to be fooling around with their clothes. They are often expected to be wearing certain things at certain times or they might even be wearing something that is on loan to them… so they can’t afford costly mistakes. In fact, a good friend of mine owns a high-end boutique on Third Street and someone had
You can find Beverly Crest Cleaners at: 10301 Santa Monica Blvd. West Los Angeles, CA 90025 or online at: www.beverlycrestcleaners.com They have been around since 1927. The current owners Harry and david have owned the place since 1978. They are brother- inlaws that are both engineers, electrical and mechanical. They saw an opportunity for a unique business and jumped on it. The thing I quickly discovered about what makes the way Harry runs his business different than the average “Joe-blow” cleaners you see out there, is that with “Joe-blow” cleaners you get
44 HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
come in to pull clothing for a photo shoot. Before returning it to the store they had it cleaned and the random “Joe-blow” cleaners ruined the clothing…which is a loss of merchandise. My friend then started having everyone take the borrowed merchandise from her store to Beverly Crest and it’s as if the items never left. Something else I witnessed while in Beverly Crest was a woman whose clothing had been around
a lot of smoke from the fires and her clothing reflected that. At Beverly Crest they offer smoke damage cleaning which gets that ever lingering smell of smoke out of your clothes, so they don’t have to be replaced. Another convenient thing I saw, is that they offer pick up and delivery service of your items. They will come to your house or office to pick up what you need to be cleaned and drop it off. Also for the environmentally friendly person out there, they offer what they call “wet cleaning” where they don’t use any chemicals on your clothing… but if you are a germ-a-fob and really want to make sure to get the junk out of that jacket you brought in… you can rest assured they only use the best products out there. The reason I think this business works so well, is because they are
solid from the inside out. Most of the employees have been with the company for 10 plus years. In fact, a man who had worked for the company 9 years when Harry and david took over, continued working with them for another 20 years before he retired. The reason for this is because what I noticed from just being in there, you can see it’s a friendly lowpressure environment, where they are more about the quality than the quantity. What I mean by that is most cleaners have their employees doing 25 or 30 presses an hour where at Beverly Crest they do 7 or 8. This is because
each garment is inspected before the cleaning and then inspected after the cleaning by a separate department to make sure there aren’t any tears/ discoloration or any damage. Volume doesn’t matter here, it’s quality.
So, if you have a couture piece or are a production studio or someone like myself who really cares about your unique piece - this is the place to go. Every garment is treated and cared for as if it were their own personal treasure. And don’t worry about them losing anything because every item has a computer tag on it that allows them to track every movement of your piece, so they know where everything is at all times. Just ask James, who has been going there for 75 years…. obviously they are doing something right!
