SENIOR EDITOR Pamela Spyrs MANAGING EDITOR Jenny Werth DIR. OF MARKETING Launy Rhem

Dearest Readers, Everyone here at Hollywood Weekly Magazine wishes you a very happy new year filled with happiness, success and health! In this issue, you’ll find some wonderful tips for starting out 2012 with a bang! It’s a “New Year and a New You!” So, keep your eyes out for everything from the latest chic party-styles to the best new productfinds! Hollywood was full of glamor during the excitement of the Golden Globes, and naturally, we’re here to share some of the coolest happenings during the Golden Globe’s hoopla! We also have a special story on Patrick Swayze and some words of wisdom that only a legendary man such as Swayze could have shared. During this new year, we need to focus on what’s ahead of us. In a new year, I don’t find it’s necessary to create long, difficult-to-complete lists of goals; I mean really? Rather, I find it’s best to focus on the best that’s already inside each of us and to continue to nourish what we’ve already got going! So, sit back and enjoy as you read this issue. And remember, we’re always here to lead you in everything-Hollywood and far beyond. I have only wish for everyone (and it’s simple!), enjoy the new year and think of at least a few things for which you are grateful. That’s really all that we need to keep life in perspective... not a list of new year’s resolutions that leave most of us feeling, well, annoyed. So, just Enjoy! Happy New Years! If you’ve got a sweeheart, then enjoy Valentine’s Day and if not, then do as I do: ignore all the hearts, over-the-top ‘mushy’ cards and teddy bears and sail through the day by remembering why you’re happy to be a single and independent Angeleno!

I

t was a curious request to make of the cast and crew of a wholesome kids’ television show, and it came without explanation. Everyone who worked on the set of “iCarly” was instructed to disclose their Social Security numbers and submit to a federal background check; a surprise, they were promised, would come in a few weeks’ time.

“At that point, we had no idea that we were going to have a special guest star or anything, but that was kind of our hint that something important was happening,” Nathan Kress, one of the show’s popular teenage stars, remembered. It was a good guess. That February sees the long-awaited premiere of the “iCarly” episode guest starring Michelle Obama, who will be appearing on the hit Nickelodeon comedy to promote her message of support for the children of military families. As memorable as the televised event will be for viewers, the experience of making the episode was one the young cast will never forget. Tension was high on set as the Secret Service swept the studio, but “fortunately [Obama] is super nice and incredibly personable, so as soon as she got on set and we were hanging out with her it was completely comfortable,” Kress said. “It was weird because we were nervous at the beginning, but after a while, to know that she’s a normal person, it was kind of funny,” Miranda Cosgrove, who plays Carly, the show’s precocious teen lead, laughed. “We sort of stopped thinking about the fact that she was the First Lady and just had a really good time.” Obama plays a version of herself, one who happens to have been moved by an episode of the web show within a show -- think NBC’s “30 Rock” for tweens -- put on by Carly, Freddie (Kress) and their friends Gibby (Noah Munck) and Sam (Jennette McCurdy). The guest part is more than a mere cameo; the First Lady’s TVself visits Carly after learning that the webcasting teen’s father, an Air Force pilot, has had his return home delayed by another redeployment. To her credit, the cast said, Obama took on the challenge of learning a substantial amount of dialogue despite frequent travel and an always-packed schedule. “We definitely made sure to give her a lot of room to do what she needed to do,” Kress said, saying they carved out extra time with the assumption that she’d make a lot of bloopers. “She really didn’t [make mistakes], and she had a massive chunk of lines and she got it down just about perfect almost every time. So she did incredibly well with the very small amount of time she was given.” He singled out her ability to crack up on command at a very unfunny joke, saying, “It’s tough to come up with a convincing laugh, and she did that almost every time. That’s when I knew she’d be good.”

shots in which Obama would be featured first, then later shot the footage of the rest of the cast that did not require her presence. In what is sure to be the most memorable clip from the episode, the First Lady shuffles, claps and lets loose in one of the show’s patented Random Dances. For that scene, she had a little advance help. “She was talking about how her daughters had shown her some moves so she wouldn’t be embarrassing on camera,” Kress recalled, to which Cosgrove added, “I dont know why, I kind of expected her to be a little shy about it, but she wasn’t at all -- she got really into it, she had a lot of good moves.” Munck, who plays a younger, perhaps less-intelligent character, was even more effusive. “She has moves. She can kick my butt in a dance competition, definitely,” he said. During breaks, the cast got some more face time with the First Lady. A fashionista with her own clothing line, Cosgrove took the chance to chat up Obama about her vaunted style. “She dresses really cute,” she laughed, “and Jennette and I are both really into clothes and fashion. We thought her outfit that she wore on the show was really cute.” For Munck, the one-on-one time was a bit more serious.

“My dad’s an ex-Marine, so I come from a military family, too,” he said. “It’s cool to see that she’s promoting [her message] through our show ... she was just really supportive of that.” The celebrity worship did not flow entirely in one direction. The FIrst Daughters, Malia and Sasha, are huge fans of the show, and the cast signed photos for them while they spent time with The First Lady in the green room. It’s amazing, the stars all agreed, to think that their show plays in the White House, though Cosgrove is a bit more used to the idea of appearing on an Obama household television. Having previously met the First Family at an event in Washington, she remembered the President telling her that he had seen “School of Rock,” the 2003 Jack Black film in which Cosgrove co-starred. “That,” she marveled, “was crazy.” Kress, for his part, doesn’t just want the President to see his work; he’s got a plan to get the leader of the free world as the next special guest on “iCarly.” “What would be cool would be if it was a cameo, and they shot it completely separately, and we were doing a web show and then it cut away to them just sitting in the Oval Office with a laptop, watching the show,” Kress laughed. It was a half-serious suggestion, and not a crazy one; after starring alongside the First Lady, he’s got every reason to dream big.

Paul McCartney to Receive Hollywood Walk of Fame Star Nearly 20 Years After Being Chosen

by Shirley Halperin

Although first nominated in 1993, the Musicares Person of the Year honoree is the only Beatle without a star on the famous boulevard. It may be hard to believe, but Sir Paul McCartney, one of two surviving members of The Beatles and arguably the game-changing foursome’s most successful solo graduate, is the only Beatle who doesn’t have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. MusicCares Adds Performers Tony Bennett, Coldplay, Foo Fighters to Paul McCartney Event. Abbey Road Studios and Fairmont Hotels Partner for Music-Themed Lodging ‘Experience’ Paul McCartney Says Beatles Split All on John Lennon The 69-year-old has certainly seen his share of nominations over the years, and even participated in honoring two of his bandmates, Ringo Starr in 2010 and George Harrison in 2009, eight years after the

guitarist died in 2001 -- both stars, along with John Lennon’s and one for The Beatles, have a permanent home in Hollywood outside the Capitol Records building near Hollywood and Vine -- but the dedication ceremony has eluded him, mostly due to scheduling difficulties. The unintended slight is about to change. On Feb. 9, nearly 20 years after last being chosen for the honor in 1993, he’ll finally get that star. Details on guest attendees and speakers have yet to be revealed, but the ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. outside of Capitol Records. The next night, the Beatle will be honored as Musicares’ Person of the Year at the organization’s annual gala dinner and tribute concert. It’s all part of a grand celebration of music leading up to the Grammy Awards, broadcast live on CBS from the L.A’s Staples Center Sunday, Feb. 12.

PATRICK SWAYZE A LEAP OF FAITH PHOTO AND ARTICLE BY: Karen Bystedt 10 - Hollywood WEEKLY

y

ou have to have something bigger than yourself in order to keep your head on you shoulders. i’ve lived my life up to this point, with a desire to make a contribution through my work and to affect people’s lives in a positive way. - PATRICK SWAYZE + AUGUST 1987

Staying true to who we are and what we believe in seems to always become more difficult the more success we achieve, the more known we become to the world. As successful artists and creators, we attract a slew of business-savvy people that lack these talents but have others that compensate for the things creative types typically don’t like to think about. These business minded people -- agents, managers, publicists, lawyers, and so forth, can become our cheerleaders, our collaborators, our courageous allies and support group. They believe in us, and they have a vision of what we can become and how to get us there. However, we can’t forget that they also monetize when things start taking off, which of course we do as well. It’s important to never lose sight of why we became artists to begin with, and to be sure we’re on the same page as our ‘business minded team.’

and the media was buzzing worldwide. When I contacted his publicist to confirm Patrick’s participation, I was shot down immediately. His image had to be contained and polished, and my book was a curve ball they didn’t control and couldn’t edit. She told me that she didn’t want him to do my book because he was too big a star, so I called him. I wanted to do and interview and I wanted to do an additional shoot.

Everyone in the world has different talents, and we are given these talents for a reason. We know what our talents are because they are directly linked to what we enjoy doing the most, and not so coincidentally, what we are good at. Some people are fascinated by numbers and problem solving, some love painting. Some derive great joy from teaching or helping people. Some love singing and creating music. Some want to build things with their hands. Some rescue animals and fight for their rights. Some tell stories through writing and acting, and move people to change, or just provide entertainment and momentary escape from the burdens of everyday life, which in and of itself brings a lot of joy and laughter to the world.

Sadly, Patrick died in 2009 from cancer. He was only 57-yearsold. It’s been a terrible shock for the whole world, but many find solace by watching him heat up the dance floor in “Dirty Dancing.” He will always be remembered as a romantic leading man with a heart full of gold.

Whatever your specific combination of talents may be, they were given to you so that you can share them with the world in order to make it a more humane place and for you to lead a happy life where you feel enthusiastic about your contribution. We can’t receive without giving. We can’t give without receiving. The world needs art and fame and fortune won’t solve any problems. It will inevitably create bigger ones, unless we stay true to our life purpose by way of our talents. Unless we have the courage to stay true to whom we are. Years ago, I shot Patrick Swayze in New York, in Patrick Demarchelier’s Manhattan studio, of all places. I was selecting actors to shoot whom I believed had that special combination of talents to “make it”. I was working on a book on this called “The New Breed”, and we got beautiful photographs. By the time my book was ready to get published, Patrick had just done DIRTY DANCING

Patrick was torn. He really wanted to tell his story. He wanted to talk about his art, about what was important to him and how he saw the world. He was tired of interviews where he was limited with what he could say, and saying the same thing over and over, but he understood that his business team wouldn’t be thrilled. It was a dilemma. Then he said “Karen, let’s do it.”

We’re living in a time now more than ever where we share who we are, through Facebook, Twitter, whatever social networking means. We don’t have to be celebrities today to be heard, to be published. People that read my book couldn’t believe what was shared with me - which the actors I interviewed talked about all the things they did, and that there was obviously no one monitoring what they were saying. Why is this surprising to people? Why isn’t it ok to be who you are and share who you are, and let people decide for themselves if they like you or not? Monitored or not, everyone is judged anyway.

Karen Bystedt has photographed everyone from Johnny Depp, Djimon Hounsou, Sandra Bullock, and Brad Pitt, to Andy Warhol. She has appeared on many TV interviews and speaking engagements, and continues to photograph up-and-coming actors and models, while living in Hollywood with her husband Fredrik and their bulldog, Gunnar. She has recently released a book on actors, “They Dared to Dream,” with early photographs and inspirational interviews as an eBook, available on Amazon Kindle, iPad, Nook and all eBook formats and as a hard copy at the Hollywood ArcLight. For more information on Karen’s amazing photography or to purchase her art please visit www.theydaredtodream.com or call 323360-8562.”

The supporting-actor prize Sunday went to Christopher Plummer as an elderly widower who comes out as gay in the father-son drama “Beginners.” Williams offered thanks for giving her the same award Monroe once won and joked that her young daughter put up with bedtime stories for six months spoken in Monroe’s voice. “I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, so the person I most want to thank is my daughter, my little girl, whose bravery and exuberance is the example I take with me in my work and my life,” Williams said. The black-and-white silent film “The Artist,” which led the Globes with six nominations, split its first two awards of the evening, winning the musical-score prize for composer Ludovic Bource but losing out on best screenplay for director-writer Michel Hazanavicius. Woody Allen won the screenplay honor for his romantic fantasy “Midnight in Paris,” the filmmaker’s biggest hit in decades. Never a fan of movie awards, Allen was a noshow at the Globes, where he previously won the screenplay honor for 1985’s “The Purple Rose of Cairo. The wins boost Williams and Plummer’s prospects for slots at next month’s Academy Awards, whose nominations come out Jan. 24. The Oscars are an honor for which Monroe herself never was nominated, though she was a two-time nominee at the Globes and won for best actress in a musical or comedy for 1959’s “Some Like It Hot.” In “My Week with Marilyn,” Williams plays Monroe as an insecure performer struggling to establish herself as a genuine actress rather than a movie star sexpot just a couple of years before “Some Like It Hot.” The film chronicles Monroe’s contentious time shooting the 1957 romance “The Prince and the Showgirl” alongside exasperated director and co-star Laurence Olivier. Like Monroe, Oscar consideration has been elusive for the 82-year-old Plummer, who has been nominated for Hollywood’s top honor only once in his 60-year career — two years ago, for the Leo Tolstoy drama “The Last Station.” “I must praise my distinguished competitors, who whom I

His film roles range from Austrian widower Captain von Trapp in “The Sound of Music” and Tolstoy in “The Last Station” to newsman Mike Wallace in “The Insider” and a treacherous Klingon general in “Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country.” He also co-starred in the current thriller “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” The prize for best animated film went to Steven Spielberg’s action tale “The Adventures of Tintin,” a Paramount-Sony co-production that dealt the first Globes loss to Disney unit Pixar Animation. Pixar films such as “Ratatouille,” ‘’WALL-E” and “Toy Story 3” had won all five previous times since the Globes added the category. Spielberg thanked his producing partner on the film, “The Lord of the Rings” creator Peter Jackson, along with both studios behind the film, based on what the director pointed out was a series of picture books by Belgian writer Herge that started 80 years ago. “I would like to thank two studios that really proved the adage that Peter and I could make the telephone book if we wanted to,” said Spielberg, whose World War I epic “War Horse” is nominated for best drama. The Iranian drama “A Separation” was chosen as best foreign-language film. Writer-director Asghar Farhadi uses a divorcing couple’s domestic troubles with a young child and an aging parent as the means to examine gender, religious and class distinctions in contemporary Iran. Ricky Gervais, who has ruffled feathers at past shows with sharp wisecracks aimed at Hollywood’s elite and the Globes show itself, returned as host for the thirdstraight year. He started with some slams at the Globes as Hollywood’s second-biggest film ceremony, after the Oscars. Gervais joked that the Globes “are just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem. The Globes are to the January/FEBRuary

Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought. Allegedly. Nothing’s been proved.” He also needled early winners, saying the show was running long and stars needed to keep their speeches short. “You don’t need to thank everyone you’ve ever met or members of your family, who have done nothing,” Gervais said. “Just the main two. Your agent and God.” After winning for musical score, “The Artist” composer Bource apologized for his halting English, saying, “I’m sorry, I’m French,” adding that he’s better with music than words. “Right now, if I were to write a song, it would be a tap-dance number,” Bource said. “The power of music is at least universal. The gift of the silent film is that it is so universal.” Madonna, Julie Frost and Jimmy Harry won the Globe for best song for “Masterpiece” from the King Edward-Wallis Simpson drama “W.E.”, which Madonna also directed. Among television winners were Kate Winslet as best actress in a miniseries or movie in “Mildred Pierce,”Idris Elba as best actor in a miniseries or movie in “Luther,” Laura Dern as comedy or musical actress in “Enlightened,” Kelsey Grammer as dramatic actor in “Boss,” ‘’Homeland” for drama series and “Downton Abbey” for miniseries or movie. A drama with comic touches, “Beginners” was a fitting recipient to start the Globe ceremony, which has a strong lineup of lighter fare to match the more sober-minded films that generally dominate Hollywood awards. Alongside those heavyweight dramas, the category for best musical or comedy at the Globes usually is more of a lark, with nominees rarely emerging with best-picture prospects at the Academy Awards. Yet Sunday’s musical or comedy contenders made up a strong bunch that could give their best-drama cousins at the Globes a run for their money come Oscar time. 28 - Hollywood WEEKLY

Among the six nominations for “The Artist” were best musical or comedy, director for Hazanavicius, and acting slots for Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo. Tied for second with five nominations each are the Deep South tale “The Help” and George Clooney’s Hawaiian family story “The Descendants,” both of them among best-drama contenders. With the Oscars choosing up to 10 best-picture contenders when nominations come out Jan. 24, “The Artist” could have some other comic company there. Globe musical or comedy nominees “Midnight in Paris” and “Bridesmaids” also have solid Oscar nomination prospects. Most years, the musical or comedy category is filled with nominees that have little or no chance at the Oscars, such as last year’s Globe nominees “The Tourist” and “Burlesque.” The last time a musical or comedy Globe winner earned the best-picture Oscar was nine years ago, when “Chicago” triumphed at both shows. This time, the dual categories at the Globes could create an Oscar showdown between the dramatic and musical-comedy winners. Along with “The Artist,” Kristen Wiig’s wedding romp “Bridesmaids” and Woody Allen’s romantic fantasy “Midnight in Paris,” Globe nominees for best musical or comedy are Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s cancer tale “50/50” and Michelle Williams’ Marilyn Monroe story “My Week with Marilyn.” Besides “The Descendants, “The Help” and “War Horse,” best-drama contenders are Martin Scorsese’s Paris adventure “Hugo,” Clooney’s political thriller “The Ides of March” and Brad Pitt’s sports tale “Moneyball.” Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of 89 entertainment reporters for overseas outlets, the Globes used to have a strong record predicting the films that would go on to win best-picture at the Oscars. But lately, a best-picture win at the Globes has not translated into victory on Oscar night. Over the last seven years, only one Globe best-picture winner — 2008’s “Slumdog Millionaire” — has gone on to claim the top Oscar trophy. Before that stretch, the Globes had been on an eight-year streak in which one of its two best-picture recipients also won the main prize at the Academy Awards. Last year, “The Social Network” won best-drama at the Globes and looked like the early Oscar favorite. But momentum later swung to eventual Oscar bestpicture winner “The King’s Speech.” The year before, “Avatar” was named best drama at the Globes, while “The Hurt Locker” took best picture at the Oscars. The Globes have a better track record predicting who will win Oscars for acting. A year ago, all four actors who won Oscars earned Globes first — lead players Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech” and Natalie Portman for “Black Swan” and “The Fighter” supporting stars Christian Bale and Melissa Leo.

“It’s an experience... thrilling, emotionally charged, and as moving as any Broadway musical I’ve seen this year!” -Charles Isherwood, The New York Times

making it’s Los angeles debut march 13 - April 22

Slinging razor guitars , thundering drums and an anti-hero named Johnny. Not the prelude of typical entries in the canon of musical theatre. But these elements herald a groundbreaking American musical all the same: with the burning passion of characters who yearn for something more, songs bursting with emotion and a story that dares you to feel and celebrate and hope. The music of Green Day and the lyrics of lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong captured the zeitgeist of a generation with its Grammy® Award-winning multi-platinum album. American Idiot puts those raw emotions front and center in a highly theatrical and thoroughly satisfying rock opera that burns up the stage. Monster hits like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, “21 Guns.,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the title track soar like they were written for the stage under the direction of Tony Award® winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Black Watch) and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal). THE REAL DEAL ON BOTOX

AND FILLERS...

By Jenny Werth

before

L Inas Anis

after

ADIES!! We’ve all heard of it, but, do we really know what botox and fillers do? Educating yourself about the pros and cons of all beauty enhancement procedures is essential. Here’s the “down-low” on these popular treatments. Again, The Hollywood Weekly digs deep to discover the answers to questions so many women may not understand. Here in our exclusive Q & A with Inas Anis we’ll learn more.

Q. What procedure helps the best for wrinkles? And what causes wrinkles?

A. Deep wrinkles are caused in large part by a loss of volume in the tissue below the skin that only injections of a filler can restore.

Q. When should someone consider using Botox? And do you recommend it for men?

A. Ages for use range. Actually Botox is preventitive as well, so there

is no “magic age,” other than when wrinkles are appearing to start. And yes, men also are doing many of these treatments as well today and get excellent natural-looking results. Again, Botox relaxes the muscles so it is used on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes. Also, if needed I like to inject it above the lips and chin area.

Q. How long do the effects of Botox and various fillers last? A. Botox and fillers vary on how long they last on patients.I like to

say botox usually lasts about three months. Fillers also vary with each individual person and the type of filler and area where it is being used.

34 - Hollywood WEEKLY

Q. How does one use a filler?

And are fillers used differently by each provider injecting?

A. I have my own technique when using fillers in different areas,

for example: I like to use radiesse with a threading technique that actually is like a mini face lift when injected in this fashion and looks natural.I also like to use juvederm underneath the eyes for darkness, puffy eyes and hollow areas. I also use it around the lips and in the lips to create volume and minimze fine lines. In addition, Botox and fillers should only be injected by someone familiar and well experienced with the products. A provider should know the product well and where the best place to inject for each individual person. I like to say that having an artists’ eye truly helps when injecting, along with a soft touch.

IT’S AWARDS SEASON! Y D A E R T E P R A C D E R GET

W

ith awards season upon us (and wedding season following almost immediately after), you may be in the market for some additional glitz and glamour to add to your wardrobe. When investing in a gown, I always suggest buying a silhouette and hue that are somewhat classic in nature so that you may wear it again in the future if the opportunity presents itself without having to worry about the ever-evolving trends in the industry. If you’re a fashion fiend like I am, you may know that pastels are back in full swing for spring and summer, but although it is a trend, there is nothing more feminine than a blush pink. A stunning shade, seen on many a celeb on the red carpet, it is an incredibly easy palette to work with and fun to accessorize. To make the color really pop, I would add some shiny gold jewelry and a sequined gold clutch. I’m very matchy-matchy, so I would apply nail polish in a similar shade as the dress. If you’ve got a tan, the combo of the light pink nail polish and the dress will be a great contrast and give you a good glow. Add some strappy gold sandals and your outfit is good to go! As far as beauty and hair, I adore the look of loose curls for more of that sexy, oldschool glamour. If you prefer to wear your hair up, pull it into a tight bun to show off your neckline and earrings. Apply cat-eye black eyeliner, a creamy nude lipstick, lots of mascara and of course a little peach blush to bring out those cheekbones. Whatever your budget may be, you don’t have to pay a fortune to look like an A-lister. Check out my splurge vs steal for inspiration on your next big event! Sarah Castillo

G

rowing up in Egg Harbor City, NJ Sarah Castillo always knew she would end up in the world of high fashion modeling. At the ripe young age of thirteen years old she predicted to her family and friends that she would one day be on the runway in New York Fashion Week. This wasn’t just a run of the mill daydream of an adolescent, but a burning passion deep within her soul. Teenage children aren’t always the kindest or most compassionate people, and her predictions were met with a chorus of taunts and jeers. The reaction of her classmates did nothing but harden Sarah’s resolve to make it as a runway model in the high fashion industry.

36 - Hollywood WEEKLY

Sarah began modeling at the age of sixteen by doing various photo shoots for fashion designers, swimwear websites, fashion designers, promotional modeling, and other assorted fashion or beauty projects. She got her big break when she was nineteen when she finally realized her dream and took part in the September 2010 New York Fashion Week. Gordana Gehlhausen (Fashion Designer-Project Runway Season 6) held a fashion show and asked Sarah to showcase her designs and walk the runway in NYFW. But Sarah was only just beginning. She followed up her 2010 success in September 2011 by walking the runway in New York, Boston and New Jersey Fashion Week events. While 2012 is just beginning, Sarah has already booked appearances in the February NYFW, and the Miami Fashion week in July. Along with modeling Sarah is also branching out into the music industry as a Christian singing artist. In addition to walking the runway, Sarah also took part in several high fashion presentations during NYFW. (Presentations are different than runway modeling in that the models are stationary instead of walking up and down the runway.) It was during one of these 2011 NYFW presentations that Sarah had the opportunity to work with Angelina Mata. Angelina held a presentation to debut her 2012 fashion line and Sarah was asked to model for her. It was during this presentation that Sarah and Angelina got to know each other, and a strong mutual respect

was formed. When Sarah decided to collaborate with other professionals to do an editorial shoot, Angelina was naturally her first choice to work with as a designer. Angelina Mata is San Antonio’s preeminent highend fashion designer. Growing up in a family of artisans, Mata naturally took to the world of art and fashion. Her dream of becoming a full-time fashion designer came to fruition after many years of sculpting her workmanship through bespoke garment design whilst running her family salon. She also helped establish the local contemporary fashion scene by hosting and participating in several shows and exhibits over the last decade. Professional artistry and dedication to her passion has gained her a large clientele and the respect of the design community in San Antonio. Her clientele ranges from youth wanting to stand out among the growing population of “fashionistas” to the classic urban woman demanding attention in all the right ways. In addition Mata is often featured in contemporary art shows at venues including Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, and the Gallery of Missi Smith. In September of 2011, Mata showed her Spring | Summer 2012 collection during New York Fashion Week which was well received among press.

shoot, Sarah needed to assemble a team of top notch professionals. While modeling in the New York market Sarah has had the opportunity to meet a wide network with other industry professionals in the area. She previously worked with Breann Smith (a well known area makeup artist) during the Columbus Day parade in 2011. She also had the chance to build relationships with Tonya Deodath (up & coming photographer in NYC) and Darren Bay (a highly regarded hair stylist in NY). Sarah Castillo, Breann Smith, Tonya Deodath and Darren Bay can all be found on Modelmayhem.com or Facebook.com.

lobalization has made the verbal world of my youth increasingly visual. Us writers are scrambling to reinvent ourselves as bookstores and libraries close and print publications morph electronically into digital, radio, and television treatments. Pens and pencils seem almost things of the past.

Mayan Indian heritage. She entered both pageants to draw attention to blinding conditions that run in her family. The two of us are hard at work with an international online team on a Women of Vision fundraiser on behalf of Foundation Fighting Blindness, Inc. in Maryland. April’s charitable orientation has transformed the conventions of the beauty contest into a global platform for a very worthy cause.

The many barriers presented by language and culture in our globalizing economy have given priority to highly visual professions such as fashion and entertainment. The vacuum produced by the fall of Communism in Russia and Eastern Europe is rapidly being filled by the fashion and entertainment industries. Such trends may be seen in many other developing free market economies worldwide.

My company’s connection with fashion and entertainment has led me to fulfilling work with other charities such as Designers 4 Africa, Finding Freedom International, Pals Around The World, and We Care For The World. As movie theaters shut down all over one of the world’s entertainment capitals, fashion and beauty benefits remain a reliable source of ticket sales in Los Angeles. Those who are doing well still want to do good.

Ethnic communities produce many of America’s top fashion and entertainment talents. At the end of January Latina swimwear designer Karina Copado kindly welcomed me to the Dollhouse at Tenten Wilshire for a private media appreciation event. At this time Ms. Copado unveiled her first-ever editorial campaign by AC Productions. The Dolls sizzled in bright neon shades of pink, blue, yellow, and orange with handcrafted hair bows courtesy of Hello Gorgeous Couture by Elizabeth Marie. Once herself a swimwear model, Karina Copado is now a self-made success in the field of fashion design.

Nobility is a character trait in America. We earn our titles and everything else here. We have the freedom to define our own destinies, the noblest birthright I can possibly imagine. Time and again I see how trends come and go but genuine talent never dies.

Beauty pageants have always been a popular path to career mobility in multicultural America. At their best these pageants offer financial incentives for education and foster self-confidence and self-presentation skills in the contestants. HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY and our new Mrs. World were the first recipients of my company’s Crystal Ball Awards to honor these visionaries who keep breaking global barriers to success in spite of all odds. We will accept nominations throughout the transformative Year of the Dragon and far into the future. My many associates who want to go Hollywood in service of higher principles have led my company into some fascinating directions. I sincerely hope that New Year optimism and Valentine’s Day love and compassion will continue to bless our efforts.

LA THEAT It’s hard to find any “white” in a California winter, in fact, it almost feels like summer right now, but don’t let the warm weather go to your head – cool yourself down in one of our local theatres with shows such as:

“Dissonance” When the Bradley Quartet arrive in New York for a concert honoring their ten years togtether, tension builds as their jealousies and frustrations rise to the surface. The fragile harmony between James, Paul, Beth, and Hal is disrupted when Beth, the cellist, agrees to give music lessons to Jonny, one of America’s biggest rock stars. Musical and personal conflicts intertwine and implode, throwing the futures of the four musicians into doubt. Egos, loyalty, and love are all put to the test in this witty, buoyant, and ultimately moving play of music and musicians. Written by Damian Lanigan, and directed by Crispin Whittell, it runs February 1 through March 4 at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank. For tickets call 818-955-8101 or visit www.falcontheatre.com.

Askance

“Buddha: Triumph & Tragedy in the Life of the Great Sage” The man we know as the Buddha lived in Northern India around 500BC and introduced the teaching known as Buddhism. After his death, an extensive oral history of the movement was written down and carried throughout Asia, becoming the taproot for all Buddhist traditions. Framed in a most unusual and personal context, selections from these texts are brought to the stage, unchanged, to enact the extraordinary life of the man from start to finish. It’s an epic story of personal struggle, supreme enlightenment, and horrific tragedy. Written by Evan Brenner, and directed by John C. Reilly, it runs February 3 through February 25 at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles. For tickets call 800-838-3006 or visit www.thebuddhaplay.com. “Pentagon Papers” President Richard Nixon referred to the Watergate break-in which eventually lead to his resignation as ‘silly’ and ‘incredible’ in grand jury transcripts made public in November 2011. Key passages from the recently declassified Pentagon Papers reveal the shocking secrets that led him to create a team of Watergate burglars and eventually to the self-destruction of his presidency. Written and directed by John Powers, it runs February 5 through March 25 at the Santa Monica Playhouse in Santa Monica. For tickets call 310-3949779 or visit www.santamonicaplayhouse.com. “The Treatment” Who draws the line between sanity and insanity? In this new work of visceral, movement-based storytelling, the complacent doctor of a remote mental hospital befriends a philosophizing madman, but as the doctor’s worldview is upended, society’s prescription is to make him a patient in his own ward. Chekhov’s investigation of people in positions of power and those they hold captive ignites with intense physicality fused with ironic humor, dance, and song. Written by Richard Alger, adapted from Anton Chekhov’s “Ward 6”, and directed by Tina Kronis, it runs February 25 through March 25 at the Theatre @ Boston Court in Pasadena. For tickets call 626-683-6883 or visit www.bostoncourt.org. “Askance” When an assisted living retirement home suddenly closes, among the seniors being forced to re-locate are Irving and Milly, a long-married couple; and Sylvia, a woman suffering bouts of dementia aggravated by the long absence of her now-grown son. The three seniors are more connected than they might first appear. Dark, mysterious, ugly secrets thought submerged for decades suddenly rise to the surface, uncovering a history of sex, blood and deceit. Written by Kerr Seth Lordygan, and directed by Sabrina Lloyd, it runs through February 12 at the Eclectic Company Theatre in Valley Village. For tickets call 818-508-3003 or visit www. eclecticcompanytheatre.org. “What the Butler Saw” Undressing, cross-dressing and sexual innuendoes abound in English playwright Joe Orton’s send-up of the mental health profession, along with stabs at government, religion, literary aspiration, heterosexuality and homosexuality creating a breakneck comedy of licensed insanity. Written by Joe Orton, with music by Jennifer Lin, and directed by Alan Patrick Kenny, it runs through March 11 at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles. For tickets call 310-477-2055 or visit www.odysseytheatre.com.

“Hunger: In Bed with Roy Cohn” Waiting in a purgatory of his mind and holding court on his bed, Roy Cohn is haunted by tragi-comic visions of Ronald Reagan and Barbara Walters; his lover, G. David Schine and Julius Rosenberg, with wife, Ethel, on the phone. Only after his dancing inner child implores him to “come out”, are we able to see Roy as he might have been. Written by Joan Beber, with music by Max Kinberg, and directed by Jules Aaron, it runs through March 11 at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles. For tickets call 310-477-2055 or visit www.odysseytheatre.com. “Twentieth Century” Oscar Jaffe, an egomaniacal Broadway producer who has sustained a string of recent flops and is now dodging creditors, boards the glamorous passenger train Twentieth Century Limited, heading to New York. But she’s on her way to meet with his competitor, Max Jacobs, to sign up for his play. Jaffe believes he’s found an investor in a fellow passenger and heiress, Miss Clark, who could write a check big enough to entice Lily to renew her working relationship with Oscar and save his show. Little does Oscar know that Miss Clark has just escaped from a mental asylum. Written by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur and Charles Bruce Milholland, adapted by Ken Ludwig, and directed by Michael Lorre, it runs through March 17 at the Sierra Madre Playhouse in Sierra Madre. t was typical quiet Friday night in Los Feliz. Driving down Sunset there’s a few people walking, a group hanging outside of a local bar, and a line around the corner of the Vista theatre with bikes locked up everywhere. Bikes were locked next to bikes which were locked on bikes on top of bikes. Friday January 20th was a big night for the Los Angeles bike community because they were taking over the Vista to watch movies about bikes. You’ve probably seen them around LA, and maybe even witnessed them on one of their night rides with a few hundred of their closest friends. This night was special though. Rick Darge, directed an in depth look at the wild, charismatic, and sometimes dangerous world of night time group rides in Los Angeles. Funwunce Productions premiered the short film January 20th and 21st at the historic Vista theatre in Los Feliz, California. In addition to Darge’s documentary, Monday Night Rehab: The Story of a Ride Leader, the showcase featured several other short films about the Scene from Bike <3 http://vimeo. com/31449517

No other city has the consistent level of late night bike rides like Los Angeles does and nobody has ever truly captured the essence and the community of people that makeup these rides.
