ew York, Penn Station, December 3rd 2006, 3:00 AM. It was the defining moment when Jesse Sink, a young fashion model and a fitness competitor, stared in the face of Death, and his life has changed forever. What defines the measure of courage, tolerance, and bravery? How much pain one has to go through to make or break the barrier which separates a quitter from the survivor and the victor?! I’m sitting and waiting for the subject of my interview to show up and meanwhile leafing through his book. A title “Shock Your Life Into Action” could have suggested it is another do-it-yourself guide about sales techniques. However a picture on the book jacket immediately sends shockwaves. I see a handsome, well built man with a six-pack of carved muscles, extensive burn scars and missing limb below his right elbow! Questions are already boiling in my mind. Mild sound of footsteps and amicable chit chat are approaching the door like a snowball, and in the next moment here he comes. Over six feet tall giant, very comfortable in his own skin, ginger head with blue eyes man from the book jacket. The entire room momentarily fills up with his fiery positive energy, jokes and absolutely easy-going personality. He drops down on the chair, swiftly shakes my hand and winks at me: “How it’s goin?” That is how I met and instantaneously became friends with Jesse Sink, the man who never accepted the limits and limitations life had unsuccessfully tried to push on him. Why? Because he refused to surrender to his disabilities. A horrible freak accident made Jesse lose his arm, burn from high voltage power line, die and come back! That same accident made him a living legend to learn from and be inspired by. His unique story about mistakes, tragedy, pain, courage, ironclad will to survive and unsurpassed joy for the life he has been granted again after his death makes wonder about priorities and make us want to raise our own bar higher. 10 • HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
Tatiana: I was leafing through your book right now to fathom the depth of what happened to you, and how that fateful night in 2006 had affected your life? What was your life like before the accident? Jesse: I was raised on a farm in a very conservative, religious household, almost like amish, without any internet, or tv. I was craving for more balance in my life, I felt like I wanted a bigger purpose. When I was younger I was praying to God to be a little different, I just didn’t know I would be this different. I got what I’ve asked for, but it came with a lot of pain. I was able to take my pain and turn it into something different and inspiring, and I want other people to be able to do the same, not to let horrible circumstances to limit their abilities to a lower standards. I had amazing parents and great guidance system - my faith. What I was missing was my freedom to learn things through my own experience and make my own choices. I literally felt like a tiger in the cage. At eighteen I was finally able to make my own decisions, and by nineteen I was managing a construction crew. Eventually I wound up modeling for Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. T: Tell me about the accident J: At nineteen I was very naive. I went to a bar one night, and probably got roofied. On my way back home I started feeling weak and finally blacked out at the Pen Station in front of the train car. Shortly after I woke up face down on top of the train car catwalk. I looked around and did notice that hair on my right arm were standing up, but I didn’t put two and two together, because I was too disoriented and groggy to evaluate the situation I was in. I just wanted to get off the train top. There were the steps down, and I looked to my right for something to stabilize myself. There was a small metal rod on a side and I reached over. 13800 volts of electricity ripped through my body the moment my hand wrapped around that metal rod. Immediately my entire body was in agony and caught on fire. My blood

boiled to 985 degrees, and I screamed until I ran out of the oxygen, than I died…. I woke up from the dead moment later, gasped for the air and was terrified to realize that I was breathing fire. Flames were all over my face choking my airways. The clothes I was wearing were burning away and plastic backpack was melting on my raw skin. Through the pain I was ordering myself not going to let go and fight for my life! With the last bit of energy my left hand ripped the right one off the rod, and my body hurdled head down to the ground. I remember my face smashing into the cold, hard concrete, and shockingly it felt like hitting a foam pillow. Absolutely nothing could be compared to being burnt on fire and melting from inside out. I still was alive but just, panting for breath and hurting everywhere. I tried to get rid of backpack I still had on, and melted skin from my back peeled away with it. Well, at that point people were running towards me from all directions, and I looked like a bloody zombie. With churned hair, no skin and 60 percent of burned body I was absolutely unrecognizable, and my Dad later on in the hospital was able to identify only my blue eyes. I was burned alive on that wire, and my heart stopped there for a first time. Firefighters asked me later if I’m still alive, and I said: “I’m still here…” There was no reason for me to be alive, and I was given two days to live, but I’m still here…. It’s all in my book….. T: What was going on through your mind? J: Two months in coma, countless surgeries, shock to realize that I’ve lost my arm. It made me very angry at what happened to me, and I started spiraling out of control. There were times when I didn’t want to go on, but there were so many people who were supporting me and preventing me from quitting on myself. Finally I understood that I owed them not to quit but to rebuild myself and my life with new realities and new purpose. I still struggled, and was very angry at my circumstances, and even at God for allowing me to suffer that much. Few years later I got a 12 • HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY

DUI and was sent back to my parents’ house to sober up it felt like I was back to the old days - no radio, no TV. I’m glad I was able to pull through, though it wasn’t easy.

orn and raised in San Francisco, Stacey Maltin graduated with a BFA in Theater from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and honed her acting technique at Stella Adler Studio, Experimental Theater Wing and the Stonestreet School of Film and Television. She participated in many theater productions in New York as well as working with a theater company in Israel. As writer/actor/director and producer, Maltin has been involved in a wide range of films and TV series, including “Head,” “Big Exit,” “You’re the Pest,” and “Royalty.” In “Landing Up,” Maltin is Chrissie, a young woman living on the streets of New York, who picks up men to put a roof over her head and a meal in her stomach. But when she meets the guy of her dreams, we see just how far Chrissie will go to keep her “perfect” relationship. Written by Maltin and directed by husband Daniel Tenenbaum, “Landing Up” had its World Premiere as an Official Selection in Competition Features at Dances With Films in June 2017 in Hollywood. The film’s East Coast Premiere was an Official Selection of the Soho International
Film Festival in New York City where it was nominated for Best Actress and Best Feature. HW: Thank you for taking the time for this interview. “Landing Up” tells an important story. What prompted you to tell it with such heart and passion? Stacey Maltin: I really wanted to explore the story of a girl who may not look like society’s idea of a homeless person. We did a lot of research in New York shelters, talking to young women. What we discovered was this huge hierarchy of homelessness, and that a lot of these girls had their makeup and nails done and carried a cellphone—things you don’t expect to see when you think about homelessness. They had dreams and it was all about the fact that so many people are just one paycheck away from being homeless. HW: Why did you open with the lighthearted scene with Chrissie in a facial mask shaving her legs? SM: We wanted to show that Chrissie is like most young women who have dreams. She was taken

into this woman’s apartment where she was living this sort of fantasy life. The film goes back and forth often between her fantasy life, her dreams of romance, and the life she has on the street. So we wanted to open with this image of her living this ultimate fantasy and then having that broken. HW: The film cycles from hope to despair. Was this something you encountered in your research on homelessness? SM: Absolutely. A lot of the people we talked to have jobs. They were working but the difficulty in getting an apartment in a big city where you have the highest homeless populations can be very hard—like in New York. One of my favorite scenes is where Chrissie tries to get an apartment. It’s an open house and the listing agent says all you need is three month’s rent, which is ten thousand dollars. That’s so typical in New York where you have to pass a credit check and turn in your bank statements. So even if you have a minimum wage job and an address, just getting a place to live can be really difficult. The constant struggle with having that just out of reach all the time can lead to despair. HW: The relationship between Cece and Chrissie appeared symbiotic but strained to the breaking point at times. Is this typical or atypical of street friendships? SM: Theirs is definitely a relationship that wasn’t based on anything, necessarily. I wanted to explore the dynamic between a girl like Chrissie who came to New York with dreams and didn’t realize how hard it would be and Cece who grew up in shelters as a street kid all her life. I also addressed the racial dynamic between the two, with Chrissie more easily able to slip in and out of higher end places than Cece. So there’s a bit of racial tension there. But at the heart of it, they really love and rely on each other. HW: Cece and James also appeared to have a strangely symbiotic relationship. Can you go into the thinking behind their attraction and needs? SM: They were both shelter babies who grew up in the system. James had somehow gotten out of that. And we did want to address mental health with James, who is definitely one of the darker characters. I think when you have that kind of history with someone, you grow up protecting each other and see each other in that way. So Cece is able to overlook that and forgive him in a lot of ways, which may not necessarily be a good
thing. But it is common in women. HW: David seemed caught between his branding world of false facades and Chrissie’s unabashed honesty. Can you go into why you chose those contrasting elements? SM: David is definitely a naïve romantic who wants to be a good guy and is looking for love. And much like Cece, he’s willing to overlook some of the things about Chrissie that are weird. I think Chrissie really needs someone like David, who is willing to overlook a lot of these things in spite of them. He’s like apple pie. HW: Chrissie’s degrading affairs and Faustian relationship with Frank were difficult to watch. Is this typical of street life? SM: Our research revealed that mixed city shelters can be a very dangerous and violent place for women—not necessarily by people who run the shelters but by men in the shelters. A lot of women will choose to live on the street because of abuse. Frank definitely takes advantage of Chrissie in a lot of ways but she tries to use him too in her own way. It was definitely something that women talked to us about. HW: Why do you think David repeatedly ignored co-worker Lysi and roommate Avi, who appeared to be the better angels on David’s shoulder? SM: I think attraction (laughs). I think when you’re really into someone, you don’t want to hear people tell you that they’re bad for you. I think that’s really typical in our relationships. You tell the people warning you, “don’t tell me that because I want to do this.” Avi is single and not really dating, so David thinks he’s just jealous, which is why he tells him, “don’t be jealous just ‘cause you haven’t gotten laid.” And Lysi’s everything that Chrissie is not. What David sees and likes in Chrissie is a sort of rawness, where Lysi is very put together, the epitome of privilege in a lot of ways with the money to put on that show. HW: Chrissie’s visit to that expensive apartment seemed to metaphorically suggest that her relationship with David and her dreams of living the good life in New York were one big fantasy. Can you go into that a bit? SM: Chrissie is definitely someone who lives in a dream world. Unlike Cece, who is a realist, Chrissie is an optimist. She sees that apartment and David and tells herself, ‘it doesn’t matter that I am who I am.’ And she convinces herself that they’re eventually not going to care, whereHOLLYWOOD WEEKLY • 21
as Cece will say people don’t go around in rose-colored glasses. Part of our filming technique was to darken and saturate the lighting when Chrissie’s homeless on the street or in James’ apartment and brighten things up with deeper colors and steadier camera work when Chrissie’s in the tub or when she’s with David. HW: What was the thinking behind the scene where Chrissie was denied entry to the student nightclub party with Alex? SM: As much as Chrissie thinks she can do anything by lying and talking her way into it, that’s not always going to be the case. Sometimes you need a student ID, which she didn’t have. When she couldn’t talk her way out of it, she went into this darker hole that she gets into that night. HW: Without going into the ending, why did you have Chrissie cross the line from sympathetic hopeful to unsympathetic criminal? SM: My hope is that what she did at the end won’t make her completely unsympathetic. She definitely crosses a big line but it wasn’t premeditated. She saw an opportunity and took it. I think it definitely changes our perception of her but I hope not in a way that totally makes her unlikeable. It’s complicated. HW: In terms of your character, how are you like Crissie and how are you different? SM: They say you always write yourself. So while the larger story is not a personal story, a lot of Chrissie is me. I wrote in a lot of things based on how people react to me. Like the scene where she forgets her wallet while trying to buy tacos from the food truck. When she says she forgot her wallet, the woman next to her just pays for her. That actually happened to me. I think that Chrissie is someone who people want to love. We did some testing for the film before we shot it and I was sitting on the street wearing raggedy clothes with this sign. I can’t tell you how many men walked up to me and said, “What are you doing here? How can you be homeless? You’re too pretty to be homeless. What can I do for you?” It was very interesting to see their reaction. “Landing Up” is available on DVD, video-on-demand and digitally (Amazon, Google Play, iTunes), and coming soon on Cable. ever give up! Not on your Dreams, not on the beauty and art your creative eye can suddenly catch in the most unthinkable, or uncommon places. That is the vibe I got after meeting with an absolutely talented and inspiring owner of German Autohaus body shop in Santa Clarita, Joseph Jasik - Drdol. I was getting ready to interview him about cars, ask him fancy questions as to what was the best car he ever had to fix, or the most exotic car he ever saw, or how to preserve the life of an ordinary car people owns. Instead, I’ve walked into a very cozy, museum-like business office, and our conversation suddenly shifted into a totally different parallel. Behind a big desk with loads of neatly stacked papers, there was a man on the phone. He was seating in a large armchair and appeared to be a tall giant with salty, a bit disheveled hair, shy smile, and penetrating but yet soft blue eyes of a man who is accustomed to paying attention to details. Melodic sounds of a foreign language spoken in a very soft and confident tone were yielding a sense of an unusual comfort around this total stranger. Without abrupting his phone adversary Joseph quickly stood up, towered over me, swiftly shook my hand, motioned to sit at the chair on the opposite side of his busy table, and pushed a water bottle across the desk. All that was done with slick movements of his hand and a confident smile. What a gentleman! While he was on the phone, getting into details of some complicated car project, I had a moment to look around. O boy, that’s when I realized that I’ve got

to up my game and my questions! Behind his comfortable large brown armchair, there were countless rows of rare Hot Wheel collectible toy cars, neatly parked in the glass garage-display. The entire place looked much classier than most standard oily and greasy body shops I’ve ever been to. The office was more like a museum showcasing cars and the most creative photo artwork. Large canvas with elaborate abstract photo creations was absolutely everywhere! While I was observing them puzzled, Joseph got off of the phone and stunned me with an explanation that all this was his own photo art. Whoa!!! That’s was not what I was prepared for! We have immediately bonded and found common artsy language because photography is another craft I truly enjoy and good at. Instead of the interview we just had a very animated conversation about creativity and ability to see something extraordinary in the most unusual places and forms. Joseph wanted to talk mostly about his photo art and why it was so close to his heart. I was too happy to oblige. Tatiana Davidov: Joseph, when and how did photography find you? Joseph Jasik: Well, to tell you the truth it all started a long time ago, in my childhood, but then I grew up: girls, cars, coming to America…. Time flew by and I forgot all about my art until about seven, or eight years ago, when I found myself standing at the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, watching the reflections of light in the night water. It was so beautiful that I had to reach out for my camera and quickly snap that perfect moment. Well, unfortunately, I lost that very first chip with lots of good pictures. One moment and all of that was gone… With time I started exploring things around me, seeing different shapes and patterns in most unusual places. I see what nobody else can see… Now I have about forty thousand images. I probably can do ten different exhibitions and have enough work for each of them (T: he proudly chuckles) TD: Joseph, I see the whole bunch of medals on the wall. What are they?

JJ: They are my half marathons medals and trophies. About nine years back I wasn’t watching my health and wasn’t’ careful, and as a result, I’ve started having some health problems. It was to choose what’s right. I’ve learned a thing or two about food, diet and healthy eating. Half Marathons just naturally came along. In nine years I have done 156 half marathons. Joseph then brought out few framed pictures ready to be displayed for the exhibition. They all had some fantastic combination of shapes, textures, and colors. Joseph looked at me with his mischievous smile and proudly confessed that definitely sees what nobody else can see out there when he walks the streets and sees wonders at each and single corner. Apparently, he has close to 40 thousand images and is ready to do several exhibitions at once. He had 4 exhibitions in Slovakia and few here, in Newhall, CA. Joseph is also working on publishing a photo art book with about 120 photographs in it. He plans to arrange them the way that pictures will be removable from the book, in case somebody would want to frame it. He looked through the window, obviously going through some deep thoughts and then his eyes lit up with a simpered smile: “Let me tell you something, car restoration it’s just a job for me, but photo art is the passion, that’s something I truly love,” and I believed him! Joseph loves to roam the streets and places in New York and capture those little things and details which are catching his and his eye only. He says he just sees those extraordinary things undetectable to others. Anywhere he goes, as soon as he sees something to catch his eye, he just would drop everything he does, reach out for his Sony camera which is attached to his belt, and just snaps the shot. However, Leica camera is the one he truly enjoys. Joseph was having fun explaining to me that ordinary people may look like at the puddle of water and see just dirt and suds in it, but Joseph will find some reflection in it, something beautiful which will make this ordinary puddle to be transformed into some extraordinary shape. He is skillful enough to be able not just see those amazing transformations but indeed be able to convey his vision to others. I’ve got to say that he never uses photoshop, all his photo art comes from natural settings he captures in the moment. Work and art keep him young. Despite the fact that he is 75 years old, he definitely has a heart and passion of a much younger man who is ready to take the world by his love and passion to the arts and photography. Joseph says he believes in God, and knows that the ability to see those artful things comes from him. Also, he believes in himself and has a tremendous love for life and people he cares about Everything is possible, he says, as long as there is
a clear understanding of what’s right and what’s wrong. Working hard is a cornerstone of a lot of accomplishments he had achieved through his life. Joseph shared with me the most horrible experience of his life when several years ago he had a significant health scare. He was able to assess his priorities and make some life-changing decisions for the better choices and better options. Joseph was laughing reminiscing how he used to love steaks and opted to quit in a blink of an eye. He kept saying: ‘You want to lose weight - change your food. Buckwheat and fruits for breakfast instead of everyday steaks. I used to have Stakes Orgy, and I dropped it all immediately” Now he calls himself almost vegan - except for aged cheese, which he loves a lot and won’t give up. Joseph is dreaming that one day his son will take over the shop, and then there will be more time to concentrate only on photography. I mentioned that I’d love to see some of the cars he had restored. We went to the garage, and there they were, several tattered rusty corpses of the exotic cars from the old era of the Jazz and Blues of the 20th century: Tatra 1950, Skoda Felicia 1961, Mercedes 1936 and few others. Real antic! Joseph says preserving and restoring cars is also a form of art, and he loves it very much like to preserve old cars. He shared that the Scoda was found in the desert where it was abandoned for more than 40 years and was battered with rains, sun, and animals to damage this old beauty. The real gem in his collection was an absolute unique Datsun Nissan two-way car which I can’t even describe properly! That car was made years back for one of the TV shows. This car has two front ends, two engines, one gas tank, and can go back and forth without reversing. How cool is that! Just take a look at the picture yourself to see it! He is taking step by step, but the mission to restore those cars will be accomplished.Joseph shared with me his future plans, he is looking for some good exhibits in Los Angeles and new York to show his work. I’m sure there will be a lot of people who will enjoy it. The interview was nearing its end. We spend few good hours talking about so many subjects, and at the end from the stranger, he all of a sudden became an old and comfortable friend to talk to about so many different things. I ask him what is so important to him in life, and he said it definitely was the love of life and ability to see beauty in all different things and places. The beauty others can’t see, and it’s sort of his mission to uncover and preserve the beauty through the lens of his camera. Indeed, an extraordinary man I’m humbled to know HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY • 27

hroughout all times and different historical periods there always were women born to be visionaries. Women changed the World with their strength, passion, resistance, will and of course love, because they have their purpose - to tell their story, help other to be better and create brighter Tomorrow. That is why it so perfect to witness females who are passionate about empowering younger generations I’m sitting with Jenn Dawn on a luxurious rooftop of her apartment complex. It is a first warm and sunny day in LA, and we both are enjoying a warm afternoon breeze of almost cold air. She definitely was getting ready for our meeting. Next on table I see several different blingy jars of her own cosmetic line, the magazine cover with her signature on it and a bright smile from under her big and stylish sunglasses. I never met her before and to break the ice I started with few polite questions. Tatiana: Tell me, please, who is Jenn Dawn, and what we need to know about her? Jennifer: I’m the oldest of three girls, originally from Northern California, Sonoma County. I’ve started off as a makeup artist in San Francisco, working at Macy’s. I was working for Laura Mercier when she first launched her line. That’s where I just fell in love with Beauty and the Art of Cosmetics. I enjoy all those little steps I can do to make another woman feel beautiful and confident. Then I moved to a next step - freelancing independently, and again it always was about helping other women around me to discover their inner potential. Eventually I took an interest in acting. I moved to LA and started taking acting classes. Again, it was about discovering my potentials and helping others to see their inner beauty. Shortly after I was scouted by Gordon Rael from Playboy. I did some work with them with top photographers in LA. and then I took some break to concentrate more on cosmetics and beauty. T: Rumor has it, you started your own cosmetics line. How that happened? J: Well, actually that was my Grandmother. She was known to do a lot of beauty prod-
ucts herself from scratch, and of course all ingredients were organic. My Mom was also heavily into Beauty, and she made sure to instill in all of us the fundamental understanding of Beauty and taking care of ourselves, which was very important part along with her love in shaping us to a confident and self sufficient women. So I really can say that my passion for cosmetics comes down the line from my Grandmother and my Mother. Honestly, my passion for beautifying and empowering women just simply inspires me. T: What so special about your own cosmetic line? J: It’s’ called Ice Vida. I’ve created it about 4 years ago. I just had a vision and went along with it. “Ice” associated with Diamonds and bling, and “Vida” is Spanish for Life. I chose this words because my Dad was Spanish, and I wanted to incorporate this lineage of me into this project. So Ice Vida is almost like Bling Life, which is kinda current in Urban Communities now. I just took off with the idea, and there we are today. I ventured to different lines as well now. I’m pretty much a hands-on woman and always put my ideas to a good use. I’ve created my own logo, designed packaging. Everything I do eventually brings me back to cosmetics. T: There are so many other lines of cosmetics out there. Where do you see yourself going with this. How are you planning to distribute it and bit the competition? J: Firstly it’s my packaging what sets me apart from all others. I’m an Artist at heart and like to be very creative. Packaging is indeed very girly, blingy and different. I was choosing something that represents myself, and will look good not just to use but also to decorate the place where these products will be displayed. Not once I was complimented on my creativity and told that it’s different from what’s out there. I’m just choosing something

that represents myself. The colors and shapes I’ve chosen are very modern and related to the entertainment industry trends. I have bright metallic colors that pop. T: What you currently have in your collection? J: I have two lines that are coming out right now. Vixen Lips, it’s metallic infused with glitter, and also Boss Gloss, which is thicker gloss with glitter. Our products are 90% organic and contain some amazing ingredients. I’m also doing a skincare line which is Ice Vida Skin. What set me apart - I’d say my packaging and ingredients. Ice Vida Skin packaging is pretty similar to an ice cube and very futuristic and eye catching. Also, I have an Apple stem cell in my products, and it is infused with CBD which helps to fight cancer cells, it also has anti-aging properties in it. Apple Stem provides more dramatic results in decreasing lines, wrinkles, and environmental damage. This product is really good and it works, and I can’t stop telling all women around me about benefits of this miracle product. I just want to preserve the youth of women, which is so important to all of us. Hollywood or night, but at the end of the day we all want to feel good about ourselves, right? It just makes me happy to make other women happy, to boost their self esteem and be a role model for young girls. T: Do you even know how amazing that is what you are doing? How do you yourself in the future? What makes you to get up in the morning and going about your day? J: Well, I have two boys, and whatever I do is always for them. I just don’t have a choice but to succeed! Not only that! My passion is Beauty, and to create things which matter… I have a vision of what I need to accomplish and a lot of times I’m told that I’m jumping ahead of my time. It took me years, and a lot of trials and errors, but I always knew that there is something bigger coming on my plate, and I do whatever it takes not to miss any good and positive opportunities. That’s how we learn, if we won’t fail than we won’t learn from those mistakes and won’t strive to be better, right? T: Jennifer, you just brought up such a valid and important point. There are indeed so 38 • HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
many women and men who just give up when life gets tough, and than they complain why nothing is happening for them. I’m glad you are not one of them! J: Well, I come from a line of very strong women, and my mother used to tell us all the time that we should follow our hearts and do what we envision we should. That is very simple, but gave me lots of strength and will power. Whatever I do I always want to make my Mother and Grandmother proud. I am a spiritual person, and I can truthfully say that I’ve been through a lot of difficult situations and my Faith has always supported me. I know there is a higher purpose for me T: Rumor has it that you will be a beauty consultant for the Hollywood Weekly. What would you teach you readers J: I would love to have this opportunity. We are talking about it right now. I would share some secrets about Beauty products, makeup, some advices and hands on experience. T: You are a very busy business woman and a mother to two courageous boys, how do you manage it all, what is your support system? J: I love my boys and always enjoy their daily endeavors. As for support, that would be my Mother. She always believed in me and supported all sorts of ideas I ever had because she wanted me to be brave and learn and experience things. If I ever had any doubts she always had right words to say and encourage me and my sisters. She always new my potentials and was always patient when I was making mistakes, because she wanted me to find the right way and make it my own T: What do you like to do in the rare moments when you do have free time? Please share J: Well, when I sometimes do have free time than I love to write poetry and music. These are among a few of my cherished things I immensely enjoy doing from time to time. T: Well, once you are creative than it stays with you forever, right? Are you planning to release any of your song? J: Actually yes. It’s being discussed and I
can’t yet go into any details. I do like to share something else though. I’m working on it right now, and my heart goes to this venture too. I also am working on a book. It will be called “Trinkets of My Soul.” That book will be about my life story, and how and why I’ve chosen to do inspire women around me to find themselves, to find their inner strength so they can bring out the best in them out and have the better life. It should be very interesting journey to write this book. T: What you are saying here is just amazing. I meet lately a lot of people who overcame a lot of stressful or disastrous situations, and it is amazing to see how strong they have become through such ordeals, They got second chance in life and always willing to share their experience in hopes to ease a burden for someone else and I see the same pattern here. I am saying “Thank You” on behalf of those woman who will be reading your story and definitely they will be able to take away a lot from it. There are so many situations when women have no recourse to channel out their hurt or problems, and when they will be able to read your story and see how strong and beautiful you are from inside out, that definitely should give them hopes and willpower for the better Before we ended this interview I came up with one more sudden question T: Jennifer, if someone will give you an empty bottle and ask you to write a message to future generations and than though it to the ocean, what that message would be? “Believe in your dreams cause they are possible”

s a member of the media, as a writer, a person with a Graphic Design degree who has been told our responsibility comes from being historians & recording moments in time, I find myself excited to be living in the same time as Kanye West. Here is someone who is obviously going to go down in history, who’s faith is yet to be determined as to how his legend will be told. Theres also a story to be told about my admiration for Mr. West, a moment in design school tells it best. In constructing a layout spread for Kanye West as a class project, my professor expressed his dislike for the man & asked me what my obsession was. Finding myself constantly sticking up for this “Mr. West guy’s” genius in, orchestrating his own recording production, instrumentation, writing & vocals I simply say “Not many in his industry have done what he’s done”, (that industry being the field of rap & hip-hop). Fast forward from my time in college to present day May 2018, me as many others are still defending this man because he speaks for a lot of people even when he comes off “wrong”. “When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years That sounds like a choice!”-Kanye West Theres alot of controversy surrounding the comments of Mr. West when he took to TMZ during the beginning of May, In case you shy away from the world of entertainment, Mr.West took to the media outlet to share his thoughts on Slavery, Free Thought, Donald Trump, The Media & his Opiod Addiction. Keep in mind, this article isn’t meant to be aimed at what was said, but rather the symbolism behind someone with as much stature as Kanye West means to show up to a Post-Modern day Media-Outlet & express himself in a office setting for millions of people to react across the world. (It just takes one Youtube search to see where this article is going (search: Kanye West’s Rant In TMZ Office the Extended Cut) “You had me scared of myself, of my vision so I took some pills so I wouldn’t go to the hospital & prove everyone right”… A strong silence hits the media room before Kanye West continues to talk as a whole office watches him speak. I sit in awe, thumb finger on my chin, when I watch this video. These are words coming from a intelligent man, & they have a meaning bigger than it-self, perhaps these are statements that can’t be understood in the present moment altogether because they cause people to automatically react without understanding or listening… but seeing as this is the only entertainment news worthy of discussion which may in fact may go down in history as one of the greatest “speeches” aimed at the media, I 42 • HOLLYWOOD WEEKLY
figure why not try to understand. First of all we have to know what Kanye West means to people like me so lets take it there to shed some light from a inner city kid’s perspective. Growing up was rough, I grew up in the cold New York City streets, music was our only way to get us through rough times & cold winters. Can you recall a moment in your adolescence when you were listening to a song & kind of freaked out because you thought “is this person reading my mind because their saying everything I’ve been trying to express to people for years” well for album after album that’s what Kanye West was to me & alot of people. Creator of classic LP’s such as “College Dropout”, “Graduation” which includes songs that somewhat focused on past historical events & figures. For instance in the song “Crack Music” Mr. West express’s his emotions on older generation musician “Gil Scot Heron” who succumbed to the “curse” of being labeled a junkie for his reputation of being a heroin user . Gil Scot Heron, is still admired by the hip-hop & jazz communities, his voice was sampled by “Drake” in the hit-song “Take Care” ft Rihanna, he was also sampled by Rap-Artist “Nas” in “New York Is Killing Me”. However It seems as though the perspective has switched from Kanye West expressing his thoughts on people of the world, to expressing himself as a person living in today’s world. Where the conversation hasn’t switched much except now instead of speaking of others Mr. West speaks of himself, with deeper understanding of today’s industry & what it can do to a human being. Going as high up as he has in rankings in fashion & music your forced to pay attention. During the recent “TMZ visit” Mr. West says “I was drugged the F**k out bro I had plastic surgery because I was trying to look good for y’all,” he continued toTMZ. “I got liposuction because I didn’t want y’all to call me fat like y’all called Rob [Kardashian]” he says all this in defense of him shutting down his tour & his outlandish tweets which many news sources had a field day with labeling him “Crazy”.There is something more going on here, you can’t help but wonder for a second & maybe somewhere in there he might have a point on how controlling the media is. You put together his views on “slavery being a choice” & this past statement, maybe this is Kanye trying to break out of the mold & not be controlled by the media, going straight to the source & telling it like it is. Does the industry work around a hidden system of enslavement? Alright so we know slavery wasn’t a choice from the enslaved perspective. Though maybe slavery was a choice from the perspective of those who were enslaving. But who’s to say much has changed? The media is an industry within itself,
& there are many working the media-field trying to paint their own image of the Earth. Look at the covers of the magazines you read, the free subscription ones that you don’t even ask for… they just show up, now picture the person who designed that cover of the magazine, those pages, who took the photo of that person, picture the office of that titled publication… what are they all working around better yet what are they all working towards. Most of them are working around people, with the goal of persuading or informing someone of some choice they should make, but that’s just stating the obvious. As a member of the media I feel as though we should take pre-cautions, & see how what we write & present to the world affects people. We shouldn’t dictate our lives based on the reporting of TMZ or any news source for that matter. People who’s opinion matter, get their news sources from “BBC” “CNN” & they still question half of the stuff reported on those legit networks. Can you remember anything that TMZ reported last year? Any noteworthy reporting is remembered for 6-7 days the most, after that it becomes what everyone calls “old news”. But we can’t pretend that even those who choose to think this way are ignoring what’s going on. What do you glaze at when you go food shopping at the supermarket on your way to check out? You can’t ignore the news as much as you’d like too. Which is what Donald Trump’s organization is truly based around… “The Media”. Which brings me to my final point. “Hip-hop loves Trump!”-Kanye West said. Which is true take it from Raekwon, one of the originators from “the golden age” of hip-hop who said this on his infamous song “Incarcerated Scarfaces” “Raise a heavy generator But yo, guess who’s the black Trump?” there’s a whole list of people who were admiring Trump before the presidency that list including the likes of Tupac Shakur & many others. Not trying to take sides but simply state maybe we all put too much emphasis on what was said by who in today’s times, never questioning the legitmacy of any source. We as a society need to take everything that’s said with a grain of salt & never forget to save some salt for your news intake. The beauty of America is that were all entitled to our own opinions but when we let the media control our actions & get the best of us we are then enslaving our-selves. Creating foundations bigger than the things we oppose, whether that be Trump, the media, anything you feel is trying to mold you & society to things they dont wish to be & understanding that you are not alone that there are two sides to everything & in these times we have to keep looking forward no matter how deep the pain gets that is key.Its up to us to create a better future, its up to us the people.

What I mean is…Do you feel your relationship is worth the overtime you will have to spend to transform it? The reason I ask is that it takes real work to manage and transform any relationship especially a toxic one. You mentioned that you are happy which sounds like you are self-aware, but you then mentioned that you endure, which leads me to think that you may be changing yourself to a point that you are ignoring the burden it may be causing. For a healthy relationship that transforms over time we must be able to recognize and take action not allowing either party to participate in a damaging way. It is a beautiful thing, when you find someone that you truly can connect with and that you transform overtime together. In this situation you will each have to share your feeling, not just relying on your intuition, but understanding if these things that you have endure is worth the compromise.
