A
s the end of the year gets closer, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has exciting news to share with members. Recently, we launched ExploreHollywood.com, a website for tourists and locals to find restaurants, hotels, local concerts, events, and more. We're excited to get this project off the ground and would like to feature you as well! Contact the Chamber to have your business added to our Explore Hollywood Directory and continue driving business back to Hollywood. But while we plan for growth in the present, it is important to look to the future of Hollywood and its workforce. Recently, the Chamber reinstated it's Workforce Development Committee to assess the employment needs in the business community and forge partnerships with educational institutions to equip and train tomorrow's workforce and business leaders. On the subject of workforce development, this issue of the Advocate features Los Angeles City College, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. For almost a century, LACC has provided exceptional education and support to students of all needs and backgrounds. And soon, LACC will launch three new initiatives designed to support and develop the workforce of tomorrow: A tech incubator for up and coming entrepeneurs, a career exploratorium to aid students and community members who wish to make a career shift, and the Los Angeles Health Occupations Center, which will partner with major hospitals in Los Angeles to provide handson experience to LACC students in the growing healthcare industry. The Chamber is thrilled to partner with an organization committed to supporting and uplifting the future leaders of Hollywood! Warmest regards,
Rana Ghadban President & CEO Hollywood Chamber of Commerce

(CD-4).

When asked about the homelessness crisis facing Los Angeles, Ryu advocated for a three pronged approach to build more shelters, preserve affordable housing units, and expand access to health and wellness resources. Ryu also mentioned his focus on restoring trust in government by proposing stronger campaign finance regulations and advocating for transparent planning processes. support from our members, these bills and others made their way into law. As for the rest of our current legislation slate, Chamber staff continues to meet with state elected officials to advocate on behalf of our members through position letters to Assembly and Senate Committee Chairs.
Earlier this year, a survey was sent out to the Chamber membership to determine which issues the Chamber should focus on in its advocacy work. After receiving more than a hundred responses, it became clear that homelessness remains the single-most important policy issue to Chamber members and the community at large. In response, the Chamber has refocused its advocacy efforts to promote the construction of permanent supportive housing options, emergency shelters, and legislation to increase the number of affordable housing units available in Los Angeles.
As we approach the 2020 legislative session, the Chamber is excited to continue advocating on behalf of our members and create new opportunities for the Hollywood business community to engage with local, state, and federal legislative bodies.
After our advocacy trip to Sacramento, many Chambersupported bills moved forward in the legislative process. State bills officially signed into law by Governor Newsom include, CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) reform bill and AB 1197, which will protect supportive housing and emergency shelters from CEQA abuse. In addition to strict degree paths, LAHOC will also provide an opportunity for students interested in healthcare to explore the many career paths available in the field before committing to a specific degree or certification track. Last, LACC will be launching a full-service Career Exploratorium, open to students and community members. The Exploratorium staff will work with clients wishing to switch into a new career path or explore the options that may be available to them based on their skill sets. With these projects set to launch over the next year, it's an exciting time to be at LACC and even more exciting to be in Hollywood to see the community benefit first-hand from these invaluable programs supported by generous donors committed to supporting the next generation of leaders. Twice a week, LACC puts on a Food-for-Thought pop up farmers market where students are able to select fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, snacks, and dairy products that have been donated by friends of the college and other partners in the community. The college also provides meal kits and snacks to its students during midterms and finals each semester. Truly a community-centered organization, LACC goes above and beyond what is expected of higher education institutions to provide for current students, alumni, and the neighboring community. It was at LACC that legendary reporter Carl Bernstein honed his craft as an investigative journalist, where John Williams played in the Jazz Band, where Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, and Mark Hamill studied theatre, and it is at LACC that students continue to exceed in a number of fields, including Healthcare, Film and Television, Music, Business Administration, and Entrepreneurship. Here at the Chamber, we are thrilled to see LACC and its students thrive in Hollywood. With ninety years of excellence under its belt, the next decade at LACC is sure to be remarkable.
