RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield, S18 7WB (Tel: 2890686) for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

WHAT A NUISANCE ! Yes, what a nuisance. We have to return to the subject of dog fouling, but what a nuisance it is. There are continual reports of owners allowing their dogs to foul lawns and pathways of homes and parks. It is antisocial, a health hazard, and unacceptable. It is a difficult problem to solve of course. Dog wardens and police officers need identification evidence if they are to proceed. Taking photos of offenders is problematic. If you see it, please note the date & time, and write down a description of the dog owner. If an offender is caught and officials press for the maximum fine of £1000, this serves as a very serious warning to errant dog owners. 13

HOLMESFIELD NATURE SPOT The start of the New Year is always an exciting time for the wildlife gardener, spotting their first snowdrop appearing and marvelling at a spiders web on a frosty morning, the food source for many a hungry blue or great tit. “In the bleak Midwinter” is the term that we know so well in this village due to its exposed situation, but it also has the advantage of not only garden, woodland, marshland and moorland birds being able to seen within the Holmesfield area. We have a very healthy population of barn and tawny owls as last year was an exceptional year for them. As long as friendly landowners provide them with somewhere to nest and raise their young, they will reward you by taking the vermin and rats away with them. There was a good Year for kestrels taking advantage of the vole population explosion which happens from time to time. Barn owls especially enjoyed the long hot Summer nights with very little rain to stop them hunting. Wet weather is bad news for these owls. The losers though are the birds and amphibians that need damp conditions or live in water – in 2018 many small ponds dried up completely and it will be only in Spring this Year we will know how the frogs, newts and toad population have fared. Now the festivities are ending we like the wildlife in the village are preparing for the long cold months leading up to Spring. RSPB have had their annual late January yearly Birdwatch where the numbers of birds counted in gardens by adults and children alike are collated and these figures used by our Government and local authorities to assess the health of the nation’s wildlife. On a local point, I believe it is vitally important to preserve and look after the sensitive wildlife and historical sites in the village from future developments. The area around the churchyard is a quiet and sensitive area, rich in wildlife from song thrushes to reed buntings and the precious eco system could well be disturbed by any development. Our Green Belt land is gradually being eroded. The Winter months are never quiet for the wildlife gardener and there are always projects you can undertake and plan to enhance your chances of seeing wildlife. You can plant wildlife friendly hedges around your property or around a field as these are invaluable nature refuges and become nature corridors in time when the hedge matures. Parks that have taken out their hedges have seen a dramatic decline in bird numbers. Nowadays, the wholesale grubbing out of hedgerows is a thing of the past as we are more aware of their significance nationally. This has coincided with the steep decline of country birds like bullfinches, greenfinches, yellow buntings and linnets who nested in these hedges. When I came here, the fields and hedgerows 28

were full of birdsong and flocks of twites – a northern moorland bird – are now never seen here. Landowners, councils and parish councils have an important role in safeguarding their hedgerows and hedgehogs use them as nature corridors. The project I am involved with is to help re-introduce the willow tit to the Holmesfield and Totley area by providing the type of habitat which will encourage them to return, and also to install 25 wood post tree sparrow nestboxes on my land. The small pond is complete and the first occupants were pond skaters days after it filled with rain water. If you want a productive hedge you can do no better than planted a hedge of blackthorn saplings as not only do you get a very thick hedge but the bonus of sloes – its fruit – in October. The emphasis on security means we inadvertently keep wildlife out of our gardens and the excitement of seeing your first badger foraging in your garden is lost, although they will try and tunnel under a new fence – sometimes quite successfully – if kept out. Please let me know if you spot anything unusual visiting your gardens on the Nature Spot at email address ianpkassell@outlook.com Ian Kassell

DECEMBER 2018 WEATHER The last month of 2018 was relatively warm. On average the temperature was 2.1°C higher than my long term average for December. The whole year of 2018 was slightly warmer and wetter than normal in Holmesfield. However, there were parts of the country that saw very low temperatures and record snow falls in January and February, record high temperatures in July and damaging coastal flooding during the autumn. Even in Holmesfield, May, June and July were more than two degrees above normal in contrast to February and March that were more than two degrees colder than normal. So, whilst the year was close to average, there were some extremes within it. Climate scientists state that their models of climate change predict that there will be greater extremes of weather as a result of global warming. However, actually proving that we are experiencing more extremes of weather is very difficult. Our weather has always been very variable, so showing that it is a bit more variable is not easy. We can ask if the December temperature, of two degrees higher than normal was really unusual. The records for Sheffield since 1883 show 14 years where the mean December temperature was more than two degrees above average. These warm Decembers seem to cluster, with several years around 1900, others around the 1930s, then 1953, 1971 and more recently 2015 and 2016. December 2015 was actually the warmest in the whole record of 135 years. Modern weather stations can make continuous recordings of the temperature and then look for the minimum and maximum for each day or each month. Not many years ago we relied on maximum and minimum thermometers that could be used to show the extremes of temperature each day. They are still widely used, often as garden or greenhouse thermometers. The max. and min. thermometer was invented in 1782 by a British scientist called James Six. He lived in Canterbury and his design of thermometer has not really changed much since that time. It is interesting to look at the articles that he wrote for the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society describing his thermometers. He used them to measure the temperatures at the top of the 220 ft. tower of Canterbury Cathedral and compared these with the temperature at the bottom of the tower and also in his garden a short distance away. He was surprised to find that the temperatures near the ground were often colder than those at the top of the tower. Other articles in the issues of the Philosophical Transactions, where James Six wrote, also contained articles on various topics by James Watt, Josiah Wedgwood, James Cook and Benjamin Franklin. I enjoyed browsing what they had to say. Brian Brown 35

We are grateful to Mandy Drewery for providing this month’s image of the Peacock Inn at Owler Bar showing the icy conditions in February 1947. Beginning on 21st January 1947, the UK experienced several cold spells that brought large drifts of snow to the country, blocking roads and railways. Mid-March brought warmer air to the country which thawed the snow lying on the ground but this snow melt rapidly ran off the frozen ground into rivers and caused widespread flooding.
