APRIL NEWSLETTER All copy for the April Newsletter must be received by 18th March to ensure inclusion in the magazine. Holmesfield Parish Council welcomes the submission of articles pertinent to Holmesfield by residents for publication in the Parish Newsletter. Any thoughts and opinions are those of the individual(s) and may not necessarily be shared or endorsed by Holmesfield Parish Council. Any submissions must include full name and contact details before publication can be considered by the editor. Please send your articles typed via email, if possible. This is especially important for images you wish to include. Please email any articles to: Holmesfield-newsletter@hotmail.com

ROAD SAFETY – SPEEDING THROUGH THE PARISH Further communication has taken place with Lee Rowley MP and Derbyshire County Council regarding speeding vehicles in the Parish. As there has only been one minor accident reported in the last three years, Derbyshire County Councils current policy means that the mechanism to change speed limits or introduce further monitoring has not been triggered. The Community Speed Watch will continue to operate and this data will be kept to help build up statistics for the area. If you are aware of any incidents and/or accidents please ensure that these are reported as this will also help build up a picture of what is actually happening in the Parish.

ROAD SAFETY – WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS This has been a matter of concern to the Parish Council for some time. We have successfully lobbied Derbyshire County Council to put up the relevant signage. This has alleviated some of the problem. However we once more encourage people to report the flouting of the weight restrictions on the parish roads – to do so, you must record the registration number of the vehicle and the date and time that it was passing through the parish. The details should then be passed on to Derbyshire County Council Trading Standards Department via the appropriate web page: www.derbyshire.gov.uk/business/trading-standards/weight-restrictions/ weight-restrictions.aspx 15

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL Despite the cold weather and the odd flurry of snow, school has been very busy over the last few weeks. The KS2 children have been learning all about Ancient Greece whilst the KS1 children have been ‘up, up and away’ with their latest topic. As part of this learning, school has played host to a number of visitors including Greek themed drama workshops, owl displays and the beautiful chicks that they have managed to hatch (well done KS1!). The sporting prowess is beginning to shine once again with the children representing themselves, and the school, superbly at Fencing, Gymnastics, Multi-skills and Team-Building. We are immensely proud of all that took part, especially the Fencing teams that managed to secure both first and second place! On guard!! Parents were invited into school for a short Fife performance by the Y3Y5 children. The children made it look very easy. There will be a bigger performance at the end of the year. As part of Mr Ratcliffe’s drive to move the school forward, they have welcomed a new KS2 teaching assistant, Mrs Beattie, who will be supporting in KS2 every morning and all day Wednesday. As an ex-teacher, she has a wealth of experience and is already proving to be an asset to school. They have also welcomed a student from Sheffield Hallam University. Michael Hunter (PGCE student) will be assigned to KS2 at Penny Acres. Mrs Blackaby will be mentoring him during his stay. Penny Acres Primary School once again has parent volunteers! My thanks go to Mrs Copley and Miss Bridges for devoting their time for the benefit of the children in school; it is very much appreciated by both staff and children.

DID YOU KNOW? Holmesfield has three charitable trusts dating back to the 18th century. These are regulated by the Charity Commissioners for England and Wales and administered by 6 Trustees who meet four times a year. The charitable trusts are known as: Penny Acres Charity, Relief in Need Charity and the Holmesfield Educational Foundation Charity PENNY ACRES CHARITY This charity was created in the 18th century with a donation of land on Cowley Lane which is still owned by the Charity Commission on behalf of the Trust. The land is rented by a local farmer and the rent payable is divided equally between the Relief in Need Charity and the Holmesfield Educational Foundation Charity. RELIEF IN NEED CHARITY This charity was created in the 19th century. It receives income from the Penny Acres Charity and two other charities administered by the Charity Commission. Its remit is to relieve hardship, need or distress. These days, during the winter months, monies are available for fuel for residents in Holmesfield over the age of 60. Last year the Trustees received only one application although the availability of funds is advertised in the Holmesfield Newsletter each month. HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION CHARITY This charity dates back to the early 18th century. Its funds are derived from investments held by the Charity Commission and are used to further the education of young people aged 25 and under, who are or whose parents are, resident in the village. For many years grants were given for the purchase of books but now applications are mainly for computers, related items and sports equipment. Generally, many applications are received in a year. The availability of funds is advertised in the Holmesfield Newsletter on a monthly basis. For further information please contact the Clerk to the Charities, Mrs Geraldine Austen on 0114 2890686 ALL APPLICATIONS ARE DEALT WITH IN STRICT CONFIDENCE 27

HOLMESFIELD NATURE SPOT These are the lean periods for our native animals, mammals and birds but as I write this in early February, it seems we have been spared a harsh Winter, although we have had the usual Holmesfield Winter with cold icy nights where the temperatures have fallen to well below freezing. I hope you have all taken part in the annual RSPB Birdwatch at the last weekend of January. This time it was extended to the following Monday for the first time. The record of birds in our gardens is vitally important to assess the relative health of the UK bird population and acts as a barometer for the Government and Wildlife Trusts to make action plans where needed. We all know that the number of farmland birds has decreased significantly and in my garden I have yet to see a Yellow Bunting this Winter, but was amazed to see 4 song thrushes on the patio on a very snowy cold morning in early February. This is the time to put out good quality fat balls and not those cheap ones you see in string bags either as they are a death trap to many hungry birds who need to replenish their fat reserves in these shortened days when food is scarce. The RSPB do an excellent suet fat ball loved by all the birds in the garden and badgers also. I was amazed to see on the security camera that it recorded winter moth activity even on the coldest nights in January and you will have noticed a swarm of midges emerging in the Winter sunshine near water sources. I was always of the opinion we associate moths with the Summer evenings. The Valentine’s week in February is National Nest Box Week and we are starting to see signs in the bird community like territorial displays telling us the breeding season will shortly be approaching. I have just realised that the nest box used successfully last year has not been cleaned out. There is still time to do it in the next week – remove the only nest and then pour boiling water in the box on a sunny morning. My nest box was made from oak and is East facing under the eaves to give protection against the rain. Many a nestling has died in a South facing nest box. North and East are the favoured locations so get your compass out when installing one! The last week has seen the pairing up of long tailed tits – a sure sign that Spring is on the way. They are usually seen visiting your gardens in large numbers in Winter but they are one of the earliest nesting tits. Their nest is to be found in dense vegetation like a thick gorse or hawthorn / blackthorn bush and is made of lichens, feathers and knitted together with spiders webs of a domed construction similar to a wrens’ nest in appearance but much larger. The first nesting bird is usually the prolific wood pigeon who can nest in 10 months of the year if the weather is conducive for them closely followed by the magpie and carrion crow. On the 4th February I attended a very informative Bat Talk given by the Friends of Gillfield Wood at Totley. The guest speaker was Rob Bell from South Yorkshire Bat Group (SYBG). We found out that bat boxes should be sited on South facing sheltered walls and are usually occupied by our most common bat - the pipistrelle. These are 28

the small ones you see on a Summer’s evening hunting for midges and moths along our hedgerows. The larger noctule bat will emerge later in the evening and we are in a prime position to see this bat if you walk down the path from St Swithin’s Church to Holmesfield Park Wood using a bat detector. They hunt higher than the other bats and are much larger. Each type of bat has its own unique niche. Some, like the daubentons, skim along water sources, whilst others forage at lower levels. It is untrue that bats will get in your hair and use sophisticated echo locators to catch their prey. Long eared bats can be found in this area, and if you cannot pick up a trace on your bat detector, it is usually this very silent long eared bat you detected that travel for up to 5 miles to hunt for moths nightly. Buddleia “Lochinch” - a favourite variety of the late Geoff Hamilton of Gardeners World of old - recommended it and it attracts butterflies and moths to the garden like a magnet and then the bats closely follow. “If you have bats in your belfry”, only a trained bat person can handle them. It is an offence to handle a bat, move a bat colony, or destroy a colony under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. They are also getting fewer in their numbers as barns and outbuildings get developed and old trees are taken down by developers seemingly unaware of their presence. A few Years ago Dick Shepley of Woodthorpe Hall kindly gave us permission to install bat boxes in Holmesfield Park Wood, but many of those I notice have sadly been vandalised and need renewing. Bats have what as known as Winter roosts, usually in caves where up to 100 bats live together. They may be in your barns or a disused outbuilding too. The female bat gives birth to only 1 baby - called a pup - and they breed when the weather is warm, usually in June. If you install a bat box on your property, be patient as it usually takes up to a full season for bats to occupy it. You will have seen the first snowdrops emerging and even daffodils starting to break buds in the last few weeks. Because of global warming, the Woodland Trust have produced a Nature Calendar of various types of plants, insects and other activities like the first pussy willow buds breaking or the first peacock butterfly emerging or the first chiff-chaff warbler arriving from Africa. The trend clearly shows that Spring is starting earlier in all areas of the UK when the results are recorded. If you wish to record your own garden observations you can if you go to the Woodland Trust website and they will send you a Nature Calendar package in the post. I have been informed that barn owls can be seen hunting at dusk over fields in the village and will start to be thinking of pairing up so if you have a disused barn and you install a barn owl box they may take up residence. The National Lottery and Sheffield University have obtained funding to improve the habitat of one of our rarest members of the tit family, the willow tit around here and Ecclesall Woods – it has very specialised requirements for breeding and several areas have been singled out for this Project including Gillfield Wood. There is always something unusual happening in nature so if you see it please inform the Nature Spot at email address ianpkassell@outlook.com Ian Kassel 29

Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield, S18 7WB (Tel: 2890686) for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

JANUARY 2018 WEATHER The first half of January started out very mild with the temperatures in double figures on a few days and no temperatures below zero until the 17th of the month. However, if we were lulled into thinking that winter was going to pass us by we were mistaken. The second half of the month brought some snow and a temperature of -5°C on the very last day of the month. The whole month was actually very slightly colder than normal. It was a dry month with only 50% of the normal rainfall, but we did have some strong winds with a gust of 54mph on the 13th January. The Met. Office says that wind speeds should be measured with an anemometer placed ten metres above the ground and not obstructed by any solid objects within 300 metres. That is rather difficult to achieve unless you happen to live on a farm. My anemometer is fitted only about 4 metres above the ground, so it will give lower readings than those quoted by the Met. Office. My anemometer, or windmeter, is the revolving cup type that is very common. They used to be called Robinson cup anemometers, named after the Irish scientist Romney Robinson who invented them in 1846. Actually, anemometers were described as far back as the 15th century but Romney Robinson improved the design. There are several different ways of measuring wind speed. Really sophisticated professional anemometers are sonic types that measure the speed of sound in two different directions and calculate the wind speed from that. Sonic anemometers have the advantage that they do not involve any moving parts. The anemometer that was described in the 15th century was designed by the Italian architect Leon Batista Alberti who wrote about a rotating disk design. He was a man of many talents, indeed his autobiography claims that he was capable of ‘standing with his feet together and springing over a man’s head’! I quoted the words of Flanders & Swann’s song about the weather several times last year. Their song both begins and ends with January... ‘January brings the snow, Makes your feet and fingers glow’ and then twelve months later ‘B***** January again!’. January was not too bad this year. A reminder of when not only were 3rd Holmesfield Cubs and Scouts still based in the village, but also that there was a band which held regular church parades. The photograph was taken in 1957 as part of the Rev Arthur Revill’s project to document Holmesfield village life for an audio visual presentation.
