HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION Our talk at the March meeting was given by Ted Croot on growing Orchids. Mr. Croot gave a very interesting talk informed by his knowledge of and enthusiasm for Orchids. He explained that there are more varieties of Orchids than any other plant on earth. Also, they depend on relationships with different Mycorrhizal fungi for setting of the seed. It seems that every Orchid is unique and requires an individual approach to its care. For instance, many Orchids need a 6 month dry season when watering is stopped but not all. Mr Croot’s talk was much enjoyed and appreciated. On Wednesday 3rd April at 7.30pm, Mairi Longdon from Tissington Nursery will give a talk on ‘Growing & Propagating Perennials’. Plants will be available for sale. The Talk as usual will be in Holmesfield Village Hall – why not come along, we will be pleased to see you. On Wednesday 1st May there be an afternoon visit to the Rhurbarb Farm at Hardwick Street, Nether Langwith, Mansfield. NG20 9DR. The Rhubarb Farm supports vulnerable people to change their lives for the better by using horticultural schemes. Meet at 1.30pm. The cost will be £5 – transport arrangements are to be discussed at the next meeting by the Garden Visits organiser, Hillary Olsen (Tel: 0114 2890927). Guests are welcome to join us.

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL The children have settled back into their school routine since half term, continuing with plenty of sports activities, introducing new after-school clubs and most recently it was Parents evening. Over the next few weeks and months, the school and the PTFA will be looking at exciting ways of fund raising as on display at parents evening were proposed plans for upgrading the playground for the children. The current one is very worn and in need of some serious updating from both a safety and entertaining aspect. A project of this scale does not come cheap and approval has to be granted, but as you will see from an example of what the playground could look like included here, our play ground could be transformed into a wonderful outdoor space. To help raise funds the school are thinking of ways to achieve this and these could include:Easter Egg Hunt • Summer Fayre • Farmers Market • Supermarket Bag Packing AND...... Taking On More Lottery Numbers !! Any events will be advertised and are open to members of the public, come along and support the school to help them achieve their dream of a new playground. If you would like to contribute towards fund raising for the school please contact either myself or Mr Ratclifffe at school, together we can make this happen.

FEBRUARY 2018 WEATHER I wrote about the wind in my January report. Well February went 1 mph better with a reading of 55 mph produced by storm Erik on the 8th/9th February. In Holmesfield we missed the worst of the storm and I was not aware of any local damage. There have only been five named storms since September 2018. In the year beginning September 2017 there were ten named storms. I am not sure who names the storms but if we have another in this storm year then it will be called Freya. However, this was a very warm February with just a little bit of snow at the beginning of the month, followed by a two-week period of almost perfect summer-time weather. We had the warmest February day on record with a temperature of 18.6°C on the 26th of the month. The average temperature for the month was 6.6°C which is 2.7°C above my normal for the month. What a contrast with February last year when we had the “Beast from the East” and an average temperature of 1.8°C. We have had very little snow this year. There was a man called Leo Claude Wallace Bonacina who was born in 1882 and who lived near to Hampstead Heath in London. He never gained a degree but he worked at the Royal Geographical Society. He never married but his true love was snow. He gathered information from wherever he could on snowfall in England. He was short, slight and bald and did not like to go out in the snow but he loved it nonetheless. He kept records throughout his life and when he died in 1975 others kept up his catalogue. You can go on-line and google ‘Bonacina Snow Record’ and see a table that colour codes every year since 1875 as green, orange, pink or blue. Green means there was very little snow, orange means it was average, pink mean ‘snowy’ and blue ‘very snowy’. There have been only eight blue years in the whole record – 1875/6, 1878/9, 1885/6, 1916/7, 1946/7, 1962/3, 1978/9 and 2009/10. Last year was an ‘orange year’ but this year seems very likely to have been a ‘green year’. Brian Brown

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB 2019 After many years absence, the Juniors took centre stage in 2018. With 22 under-11s training on a Friday night they enjoyed a remarkable first season, finishing joint 2nd in the league - only losing 2 games all year but sadly losing in the final of the Cup. Also on a Friday night we had 26 All-Stars aged between 5 and 8 – many of them enjoying their first taste of cricket. Some of these players will now be moving up to the new Under10s soft ball team. We went from no juniors in 2017 to 48 in 2018. This season we will be running an Under-13, two Under-11, an Under-10 and the AllStars program again. We have room in all of the teams for new players. Please contact Jimmy Pearson on 07803 288200 or Anthony Bolsover on 07792 198124 if your child is interested. Girls and boys are welcome. We are looking for an old garden shed to put at the ground to store the juniors’ kit in - please contact us if you can help. The seniors enjoyed a good season too, finishing 8th in Division 3 of the Derbyshire Cricket League after been promoted from Division 4 North the previous year. They also won the Butcher Cup for the 4th successive year. The Midweek XI finished 2nd in the Chesterfield Midweek League. So as we remove the covers again for our 58th season at Millthorpe, we look forward to welcoming old, new and young enthusiastic faces to watch and participate in this wonderful game in our beautiful Cordwell Valley surroundings. We are always looking for people to help around the club in any capacity. Please contact Jimmy or any of the club contacts if you can offer any help (see below). HOLMESFIELD NATURE SPOT April will soon be with us and those of you who get up early to go to work and School will have started to hear the bird song led by the Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin and Wren at 5.30 - 8am. This is called the ‘Dawn Chorus’ and it signifies that the spell of warm weather shows that Spring is starting to arrive despite the cold nights. Blackbirds are building nests in your gardens and in the last week of March, I’ve seen our resident Long Tailed Tits taking spiders webs from our Christmas tree that is containerised in a large pot to build their very intricate well camouflaged nest of a domed shape – like a large Wren’s nest made of lichens and feathers. That construction technique is one of the wonders of nature. The nest can be found in a very dense bush or in a gorse bush for ideal protection against predators. The Mistle Thrush will be singing from the tallest tree in the uppermost branches, singing its melodic song - like a Song Thrush in tone - but does not have the Song Thrush’s repertoire of notes. It repeats the same song in the teeth of a gale or in heavy rain hence the country name for it is the “Storm cock” or Throstle. The bird itself looks like a large Song Thrush but larger than a Blackbird and has fierce well founded reputation for defending its nest area against all intruders by dive bombing them like a Tern be they animal or humans. This is the type of Thrush that nests in traffic lights, etc. The nest of the Mistle Thrush is well hidden from its predators – usually Carrion Crow, Magpie or cats, and for some reason, Cherry trees are the favourite, although they have nested successfully in the Ash tree facing the Village Hall in the past. They favour mature trees and nest in the fork or central part of the trunk, sometimes only 2-3 metres off the ground. Magpies are quite numerous here although they were shot as vermin, and the country saying was that any Magpie either trapped or shot would have the yolk of a bird’s egg on its beak. Those of you with garden ponds will have started to see activity in it – the first frogspawn and toad spawn is arriving even as early as the last week of March this year and you cannot miss the noise the Frogs make! Toad spawn is laid like a black string of pearls whereas Frog spawn looks like jelly in the pond. I saw my first Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly on the 3rd week of March and now the queen Bumble Bees will be buzzing about looking for their first sip of nectar after a long Winter. I have a mature Flowering Currant plant which attracts them like magnets. The queen Bumble Bee is the survivor – all the male drones died before Winter – it is the queen’s job to find a suitable crevice or hole where she will bring up her brood in 2019. Another good source of nectar is the Hellebore (poisonous to animals) or the early flowering Winter Heather Erica Carnea to give the latin name for this heather. The evocative haunting cry of the Curlew will be heard on the moors around here soon. We have many pairs that usually nest here and some say it reminds them of “Wuthering Heights” or the movie “Skyfall” on the moorland scene. 35

We await eagerly the true harbinger of Spring – the Swallow – together with the House Martins and Swifts in the next few weeks. As the phrase goes; ‘one Swallow doesn’t make a Summer’. If you have a disused out-building, it is likely that a Swallow will take up residence and they are such an iconic bird, but nest sites recently are at a premium. They nest in stables and cow sheds, but with a reduction in dairy production, these sites are increasingly being developed. A recent trend has been for birds like Buzzards and Blackcaps to spend Winter in our woods and gardens as global warming occurs. My neighbour noticed a Blackcap in her garden 3 weeks ago in the first week of March. Everyone is now realising that our native Bumble Bee population is in decline through a combination of pesticides like Round-up or habitat loss, so a job for this month is to create a wild part of the garden where you can grow wild flowers to give Bees nectar throughout the year. The Millthorpe Nursery will be able to advise you which are the best plants to grow and they have a large number of Bee friendly plants there. However, Bee keepers have found that a humble weed – the Red Dead Nettle and its close cousin, White Dead Nettle – are the Bees’ favourite nectar plants in gardens like ours. Red Valerian – a cottage garden plant – is a Bee and Moth friendly plant for the informal garden. Hollyhocks are also favoured as well as the good old fashioned Foxglove. Teasel is a spectacular plant and has the added advantage of shedding seeds in the Autumn which are greedily eaten by flocks of Goldfinches – a very brightly coloured Finch that also has a liking for Nyjer seed. Tree planting has been in full swing over the last 2 months and the ground is ideal for planting still, although we are now at the end for bare rooted trees. However, containerised trees – if well watered – can be planted at all times of the Year. The Barn Owl Project has been extremely successful last year and to follow on we have decided to install a Barn Owl box away from the barn in a copse of mature trees for the male Barn Owl to stay in. Even in the breeding season, the male needs his own space away from the young like the human equivalent! In our village fields there is wildlife, but through our busy lives we overlook it and some of this wildlife is the large numbers of Meadow Pipits that arrive in the last few weeks of March to breed in our marshy fields . The Meadow Pipit, unfortunately for it, is on many predators’ menu for an easy meal. They are the same colour combination as a Skylark with a white patch to the tail. You will most likely see them resting on a post or a tree before diving into the vegetation like a Skylark. Once again please let me know if you spot anything unusual or rare wildlife. Send to Nature Spot at ianpkassell@outlook.com Ian Kassel
