PARISH COUNCIL ELECTION Seven nominations for the nine seats on the Parish Council were received by the Returning Officer at North East Derbyshire District Council. This has resulted in the Parish Council Election being uncontested. Tim Haycock is standing down due to work reasons and Sue Grocutt is retiring after may years service on the Parish Council. This means that there are two vacancies. The role of a Councillor is to work with the Council to serve the community. Bringing local issues to the attention of the Council and help to make decisions on behalf of the local community. Meetings are held in the Village Hall on Vicarage Close, Holmesfield on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. If you are interested please contact Liz Boswell the Parish Clerk on holmesfieldparishcouncil@hotmail.co.uk or 07758 460757 or speak to one of the local Councillors.

SCAM NOTICE POSTED TO VILLAGE HOMES Concerned people in the village are reporting incidences of a potential scam notice advertising an online ‘social media’ network called “Nextdoor” being circulated to households in the village. By signing up or registering, one of their conditions is access to your online address contacts - presumably for harvesting personal details of others for these dubious purposes. Once people have signed up, their name is used on correspondence purporting to be a personal ‘invitation’ to other people in the area to encourage more people to register. It is very difficult to remove your details once you have signed up. Please be very wary about signing up for this.

FUNERALS IN THE PARISH The funeral of Bobbie Drakeford took place in St. Swithin’s Church on the 1st of April. She was aged 73. The funeral of Derrick Hutson took place in St. Swithin’s Church on the 10th of April. He was aged 92. The funeral of Brenda Oldershaw took place in St. Swithin’s Church on the 17th of April. She was aged 93. 11

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield, S18 7WB (Tel: 2890686) for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help! 15

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION Our April speaker came from the pretty village of Tissington in the Derbyshire Dales. Mairi Longdon is the owner of Tissington Nursery and trained at Broomfield College near Derby. She told us how to propagate perennials which are very useful plants for filling borders. In 2017 she entered the Royal Horticultural Society show at Chatsworth for the first time and won a silver medal. Mairi also won a silver medal at Tatton Park and there were some lovely photographs of the show. She was an interesting speaker and easy to listen to. Subscriptions are due at £12.50 per member. On Wednesday 1st May we visited Jenny Street’s Rhurbarb Farm at Hardwick Street, Nether Langwith, Mansfield, NG20 9DR. The farm supports vulnerable people to change their lives for the better by using horticultural schemes. Meet at 1.30pm at the Village Hall car park please. The idea is to fill up cars The cost is will be £5. Please contact the garden visits organiser, Hilary Olsen (Tel: 0114 289 0927) for details. Guests are welcome to join us. On Wednesday 5th June we will be having an evening visit to Natalie’s Garden at 134 Psalter Lane, Nether Edge, Sheffield. The entrance is at the rear of garden on Sandbeck Place, S11 8XP. The cost is £5 including refreshments – please use your own transport. On Wednesday 19th June we are having a day visit to Nostell Priory and York Gate - see advert for details. Mr. & Mrs. Olsen have very kindly agreed to hosting a barbecue in their garden on Wednesday 26th June for the Garden Association which are most enjoyable evenings – further details next month.

WEED KILLING I have been made aware that the “RoundUp” type spray the District Council are using for weed control around trees and verges on public footpaths has made several dogs very ill. A Dronfield Councillor has persuaded the Council not to use the weed killer in their area. Ian Kassell

MARCH 2018 WEATHER In my February report I commented that we had experienced some strong winds from storm Erik and that, if we had another storm in March, it would be called Freya. Well the first half of March was also stormy and we experienced both storm Freya and then storm Gareth. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what the maximum wind speed was because I am writing this report from the Suez canal, so will not be able to look at my weather station record for another fortnight. However, a friend in Bradway who has a similar weather station, has sent me some figures for March and it seems that it was an unusual month. The mean temperature was 6.9°C, which is 1.3°C warmer than my average for March in Holmesfield. In Bradway on 20th March, the temperature was 18°C but on 10th of the month there was a little snow and a temperature close to zero. The rainfall was also very variable with nearly all of it falling in the first half of the month but almost none in the last two weeks. Overall it was a very wet month with about 80% more than normal. So it was an unusual month. It is interesting to compare the fact that March was more than one degree warmer than average with the fact that global temperatures have risen by a similar amount since the Victorian period. Another way to look at it is that one degree is about the seasonal change we can expect over a two-week period. The increase in global temperatures means that the changes from winter to summer might occur two weeks earlier than they did 150 years ago. That said, as I write this on 3rd April, I am told that there has been snow in Holmesfield so winter does not appear to have finished Brian Brown early this year.

HOLMESFIELD ARCHIVES The Holmesfield Bygones feature of the Parish Newsletter has been enjoyed by many readers since it became a regular feature over 4 years ago. HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB 2019 After many years absence, the Juniors took centre stage in 2018. With 22 under-11s training on a Friday night they enjoyed a remarkable first season, finishing joint 2nd in the league - only losing 2 games all year but sadly losing in the final of the Cup. Also on a Friday night we had 26 All-Stars aged between 5 and 8 – many of them enjoying their first taste of cricket. Some of these players will now be moving up to the new Under10s soft ball team. We went from no juniors in 2017 to 48 in 2018. This season we will be running an Under-13, two Under-11, an Under-10 and the AllStars program again. We have room in all of the teams for new players. Please contact Jimmy Pearson on 07803 288200 or Anthony Bolsover on 07792 198124 if your child is interested. Girls and boys are welcome. We are looking for an old garden shed to put at the ground to store the juniors’ kit in - please contact us if you can help. The seniors enjoyed a good season too, finishing 8th in Division 3 of the Derbyshire Cricket League after been promoted from Division 4 North the previous year. They also won the Butcher Cup for the 4th successive year. The Midweek XI finished 2nd in the Chesterfield Midweek League. So as we remove the covers again for our 58th season at Millthorpe, we look forward to welcoming old, new and young enthusiastic faces to watch and participate in this wonderful game in our beautiful Cordwell Valley surroundings. We are always looking for people to help around the club in any capacity. Please contact Jimmy or any of the club contacts if you can offer any help (see below). HOLMESFIELD NATURE SPOT

I think despite the very cold weather we have all seen there has been much activity in the gardens. In the bird world it seems that the late April freeze has not stopped birds nesting, and in the case of the song birds like Blackbirds rearing young, although the Song Thrush nests a little later here when the hedgerows are in full leaf. If you see a nest site, please refrain from cutting a hedge or disturbing the birds for this time – usually about 6 weeks until the young have left. Farmers have a code that they will not cut hedges in the breeding season to protect the wildlife that lives there, though our gardens are substitute hedgerows for these birds nowadays. It is essential that birds find enough natural food like worms in the soil to feed their offspring at this time. Robins will most likely have left your gardens to find a secluded wall or bush to nest. This time of year, they will come to the feeders if you have provided them with bird food with a rich suet content. Nowadays there are many types of berry suet cakes available from the local shops and supermarkets, but if you want to give them a real treat, you can order live mealworms and feeder which confines the creatures. However, within minutes of putting it in the garden they will be gone – eaten by Starlings and House Sparrows as well as Robins. This is essential food for parent birds to feed up before the breeding season, or to give their nestlings. It can be bought online and your friendly postman will deliver it in a fully sealed bag. A few weeks ago, the earlier rise in temperature in late March had caused a hedgehog to come out of hibernation early on at the bottom of Carr Lane. Tragically in broad daylight, a motorist ran over it and killed it. Please be aware of these creatures at this time of year – even in broad daylight when driving. A tragic end to a life of a mature hedgehog you will all agree! In the next few weeks from late April, we expect to see the return of our village Swallows, but only if the prevailing wind and conditions are right for them to cross the Mediterranean from Africa. It is possible they may arrive as late as early May depending on the weather conditions. Let’s hope that 2019 is a better year for them than 2018 was. If you listen out from early May you may see or hear the first Cuckoo flying around woods and gardens looking to find a nest of a Hedge Sparrow to deposit its one egg, or forage for caterpillars in our hedgerows. We are fortunate here as many places no longer hear this bird any longer. The British Trust for Ornithology have radio tagged many birds to find out the cause of their numbers falling so quickly and you can sponsor a Cuckoo if you so wish on the BTO’s own website. A good place to hear them when they first arrive is in a woodland copse where they gather in numbers before departing to the moorlands that surround our village to find caterpillars or grubs. Whilst we are talking about birds nesting, you will probably have seen the horrible pictures of property developers netting hedgerows to stop birds nesting in them. I will remind anyone it is an offence not only to damage or remove a birds nest but to prevent that bird nesting there in the first place under the Wildlife and Countryside Act – this particular incident happened in a new development in a Solihull Business Park. An unfortunate Hedge Sparrow met an untimely death – caught up in this netting – and caused a national outcry on Jeremy Vine’s Radio 2 phone-in programme, as well as the naming and shaming of the nationally known companies allowing this to happen on Facebook media. 35

I have been asked which is the best direction for a bird nest box to face. The guide usually is that you avoid the unsheltered southerly facing side of your property and also try to avoid the box getting wet in the westerly direction, so we are left with an easterly direction or even a northerly direction for House Sparrows, Starlings and the members of the Tit family. The opposite happens for the House Martins that seem to gravitate to the warmer side of buildings to raise their young, although in the past, the wood soffit boards and eaves sheltered them from the intense heat we now get in the Summer months. You can buy ready made House Martin boxes with the sheltered wooden surrounds in pairs, and now there is a box that is easily cleaned after they depart available from C J Wildlife shop. If you have a new house, the builders can also incorporate Swift boxes into the design as they do in Europe. These consist of a specially designed brick and there is talk of these being put into every new build through legislation in the coming years as these birds are dying out too. I can never forget the amazing screeching sound these birds make when they first arrive and the aerobatic displays that come with it when they find a suitable nesting location. A word of caution for owners of dogs: the Councils are still spraying glyphosate weed killers on the paths and around the base of trees in the village. You may see the operative on a small machine spraying – if you see them doing this, the weed killer is toxic to anything going near to it for a 12 hour period so keep your dogs off the grass. I wish they would just save the money and stop using the “roundup” type weed killer on our paths. We used to have Linnets that ate the weed seeds when I first arrived here, but since the obsession of councils like North East Derbyshire and others like them, the Linnet population has halved in the last 20 years. They do not use this weed killer on their paths in Europe, so why should we use it? This is part of the war on nature that is sadly taking place. Survivors in nature now have to be adaptable or die out, so if you have a patch of weeds like nettles in a sunny location, remember that they are the food plant of many of our butterflies we like our children to see, so please just leave it and refrain from the spray and see how much wildlife you can attract. If you have a compost heap, leave it alone this year and it could be the place where a slow worm or grass snake chooses to hatch its brood. If there is a pond nearby, you will most likely have these creatures in your garden as I have in Nottingham and they too are a protected species. On the moors, you or your dog may come across an Adder. This is our only venomous snake and recognisable by its distinctive black ‘V’ shape markings, but it is more likely to head for cover and hide when it hears you approaching. The snake will only attack if it feels threatened, hence the reason for dogs being kept on leads on the moors. As well as disturbing the moorland birds nesting like Curlews and the moorland blackbird, the Ring Ousel. The Grass Snake is olive green in colour by contrast to the Adder and is totally harmless. Remember if you see anything unusual in nature in the next Month - please report it to the Nature Spot at ianpkassell@outlook.com Ian Kassel 37

ROAD SAFETY – WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS This has been a matter of concern to the Parish Council for some time. We have successfully lobbied Derbyshire County Council to put up the relevant signage. This has alleviated some of the problem. However we once more encourage people to report the flouting of the weight restrictions on the parish roads – to do so, you must record the registration number of the vehicle and the date and time that it was passing through the parish. The details should then be passed on to Derbyshire County Council Trading Standards Department via the appropriate web page: www.derbyshire.gov.uk/business/trading-standards/weight-restrictions/ weight-restrictions.aspx 45

A timeless photograph taken in the early 20th century of Brookside Farm and Mill Lane, Millthorpe with part of the iconic grist mill visible to the left. The peace of this tranquil scene was shattered on 12th May 1955 when a Gloster Meteor from RAF Worksop crashed at the rear of the farm buildings, tragically killing 19 year old Pilot Officer Bob Tritton who was from Stonehouse in Glouctestershire. Miraculously, nobody on the ground was seriously injured.
