HOLMESFIELD LOCAL MARKET

We would just like to say a big thank you to everyone that turned up on May 18th to support us at our first market. The feedback that we have had has been really positive. Many people have commented on what a great atmosphere there was, as well as how local the businesses were, with around 70% of the exhibitors being based in Holmesfield, Dronfield and Totley. The stalls were varied and stallholders told us they received very positive feedback from all. We could not have done this however without the support of the Church, Penny Acres School and the Angel Inn and its marvellous staff to name but a few, including the band who gave their time complimentary to support the Holmesfield Market. The number of people who contributed and helped us is too long to list in this article but it was great to see many people in the village offering their assistance. We are looking for more volunteers to join us. We have created a charity called Holmesfield Village Charitable Trust, amongst our objectives are: i) to promote non-profit community activities. ii) promote the beautification of Holmesfield Village We will let you know how we have spent the proceeds for this event in due course. We know we didn’t get everything right, and welcome and thank those of you who have given us feedback on facebook (Holmesfield Local Market page) in particular in relation to stalls you would like to see next time. We will also ensure we put more cones on the main road to avoid any driveway blockages. The next market will be on Saturday the 10th of August so please put it in your diaries now and come and support us again so that we can make this a regular event. The Holmesfield Local Market Team 21

HAPPY RETIREMENT TO SUE GROCUTT After over 15 years serving as a Parish Councillor, Sue has decided to step down. She will be a difficult act to follow as she has been responsible for the Neighbourhood Watch scheme, police liaison, annual litter pick, Rykneld Homes walkabout and has served on the Henry Fanshawe Foundation Governers. Holmesfield Parish Council wishes to record its gratitude and appreciation for her devoted enthusiasm and hard work around the Parish of Holmesfield.

APRIL 2019 WEATHER April was certainly a month of variety in terms of the weather. It snowed for a little time on the 3rd of the month and indeed the first fortnight was very cold, with average temperatures of around 5-6°C. April should have average temperatures of about 8-9°C. However, from the 15th until about the 25th, the temperatures soared and on the 20th, Holy Saturday, it reached 23.2°C. We enjoyed glorious weather for Easter and records were set in some parts of the UK. Sadly, it all came to an end on the 27th April when the maximum was only about 8°C. So overall, the month was very normal in temperature but it did blow hot and cold. It was also a very dry month with 18 consecutive dry days. That qualifies as an absolute drought as it is more than 15 days but I don’t think that a hosepipe ban is around the corner. There was a hosepipe ban in parts of the UK last year following three months with well below average rainfall. The previous hosepipe ban was in 2012. What we call a drought is of course minimal in comparison to some very dry parts of the World. In parts of Libya, a drought is only recognised after two years without rain. In my O-level Geography I remember being told that Arica in Chile is the driest inhabited place on Earth. It holds the record for the longest drought of about 14 years and on average it only has 2 days of rain each year. It is interesting that Cherrapunjee in India held the record for many years as the wettest place on Earth, and yet it suffers from acute water shortage because the rainfall is usually confined to the monsoon months in the summer. Britain should not really suffer from a water shortage as we very rarely have a long drought but we do need to store sufficient water to keep us going for a few months. I noticed that in March this year the Environment Agency anticipated that, due to the impact of climate change, England’s demand for water will exceed the supply by the year 2045. So it was a month of changeable weather. That defines typical British weather quite well. Brian Brown 23

HOLMESFIELD NATURE SPOT

This is an S.O.S for Nature in the UK This is the time of Year when the trees and shrubs are breaking bud and the distinctive aroma comes from the Elder and Mountain Ash flowers as you walk underneath – you would think all is well in the countryside – how wrong you are! The latest figures show a worrying trend for farmland bird populations to be in crisis, can you tell me the last time your saw a Corn Bunting or a Yellow Bunting in your garden? Even those that feed them are seeing them less and less year on year. The last two months should be the best time or season to hear our native birds sing in the famous dawn chorus if you open your window just after sunrise – the birds are singing to defend territories or singing to the female on the nest. There is evidence that the Song Thrush will nowadays sing in the very early morning and just before it is dusk as this is the time there are likely to be fewer avian predators like Sparrowhawks around and if you find a pile of feathers it is likely that a Sparrowhawk has visited your garden at some time. Going back to the statistics, the number of songbirds in the British countryside has halved over the last 25 Years and to highlight the plight our native birds face, the RSPB have produced a CD called “Let Nature Sing”, the aim being to bring the growing problem to a very different audience. The CD is getting airplay and is currently riding high in the popular charts. On a more local front, I seem to be missing my visits from our Chaffinch family that have been resident in some form from the mid-1980s when I arrived here. The numbers of Greenfinches and Chaffinches, it’s true to say, have been affected by a bird disease and it is essential to clean your bird feeders many times over the Winter period. Remember, in the coming hot days to change your water often in the bird baths. Clean water is essential to keep birds in a healthy condition. The other ways to make sure this decline is halted is to keep your cats in the house at night and early mornings when the fledglings will be coming out of the nest. In New Zealand, the local cat population was responsible for nearly eliminating all the Possums in the Country, but the Government ordered owners of cats to keep their pets in at night and the Possum population gradually recovered. Cats are very efficient skilled killing machines and unfortunately birds are also on their menu as well as Field Voles, Mice and Shrews which are not as common as they were years ago. I know we have cat owners that are also bird lovers. There also seems to be very few Mistle Thrushes around the village this year. They need mature trees to nest in – and cherry trees are a favourite – but sadly they are also showing signs of disease. The bird is “red listed” meaning it is a source of concern regarding its alarming drop in numbers. The increase in corvids of all sorts like Magpies and Carrion Crows may go a long way to answer this question. Farmers are not blameless either as it is the emphasis on producing more animal farming rather than the old traditional barley, potatoes and wheat that resulted in the fields being ploughed annually. This brought up the insects and worms required 26

by our Thrush family. They were excellent places for the Lapwings and skylarks to build nests in. The EU’s Common Agricultural Policy has encouraged the maximum use for every field, when in reality farmers should have been paid to conserve nature – not go against it with all types of pesticides and slug pellets being scattered liberally on the fields. We are now seeing the results of this in our waterways and even in our own drinking water. It needs governments of all persuasions, councils, house builders and property developers to recognise that they have to change their approach to new developments in a more nature friendly and creative way with the use of more nest boxes on new build properties and encouraging areas where amphibians can live within the development. This will require a big shift in resources given to farmers, not to produce food, but to be stewards of the countryside and at the same time becoming more nature friendly. The emphasis will no longer be on meat production or fields associated with it, these fields are no use to wildlife and are fed with nitrogen rich fertiliser every Spring and never ploughed. You will have to ask yourselves, “what can I do in my garden to give wildlife a safe haven?” – one thing that is lacking is the nutrients that our birds are feeding to fledglings and the lack of protein. You can offset this if you were to purchase “live mealworms” these are taken by Robins, Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, Starlings and House Sparrows. You may even get a Robin to feed from your hand if you are lucky. I don’t know if you have shopped at TESCO Superstore on Abbeydale Road South, but overnight they have removed all the mature Italian Alder trees that cool the car park to do drainage work . As we have seen elsewhere, there would have been other engineering solutions to accommodate the trees in the new surfacing and drainage scheme but were not followed up. This is more than slightly ironical as I informed their CEO, Dave Lewis, as these trees are the gold standard tree for flood alleviation with Poplar trees, so TESCO have removed the best flood alleviation device in their ignorance! I have noticed the population increase of the native wood pigeon over the last five years. They are a hazard when driving, seeming oblivious to cars and car windscreens, and I think it is high time for a cull on these birds like the Government did with the imported grey squirrel. Wood pigeons have no real avian predators – they are just too bulky for a Sparrowhawk to take down, preferring the placid peaceful Collared Dove instead. Therefore the only predator they have is the guy with the rifle. On a sad note, I am moving away from the village and Derbyshire so I think this will be my last Nature Spot and hope you have enjoyed reading the monthly article and at the same time getting to know nature. I am hoping some other budding “Chris Packham” may take up the baton as I have received generally positive feedback on the articles from various residents. Remember, if you spot anything unusual in your gardens, and this month, if you hear the first cuckoo returning to the woods and gardens, please let me know on ianpkassell@outlook.com. I’ve already heard one at Dyson’s works on the Baslow Road but not seen one come flying past the garden yet. Ian Kassell 27

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL Although a very short term, children at Penny Acres Primary School have been as busy as always. Our Y6 children did us proud during the annual KS2 SATs testing week. Their commitment, efforts, attitude and determination during the week showed just how lucky we are to have such children in our local community. A huge well done to all involved. Schools’ commitment to developing a healthy lifestyle for our children continues, with pupils having the opportunity to partake in hockey, fencing, cricket, basketball, tag rugby and a very enjoyable re-enactment of the Greek Olympics (linked to our topic). If you get the opportunity to visit Dronfield Train Station, you will get to see some art work produced by our Y4 children. My thanks to Mrs Bartrum for her efforts working with the children. Also, a huge thank you to all that came along to the unveiling ceremony. I am making good progress with our Lottery Heritage Grant bid which I hope will enable school to run some community events linked to the life and times of Holmesfield and of our school. Watch this space..... Speaking of grants, a massive thank you to the Holmesfield Education Foundation for their more than generous donation to school. We will be using the money to purchase newer, working IPads which will benefit the whole of our school community immensely. Thank you all for your continued support of school. My open door ethos continues and I look forward to seeing more of you popping in for a ‘cuppa’. Dave Ratcliffe Executive Headteacher for the Federation of Penny Acres and Wigley Primary Schools.

HOLMESFIELD FOOTPATHS AND BRIDLEWAYS SOCIETY The committee have met regularly throughout the year (many thanks to Mike Hastings for hosting the meeting) and they are usually well attended with our excellent secretary, Patricia Levitt, taking the minutes. Our AGM is on Tuesday 18th June at 7.30 in the Committee Room of the Village Hall. All are welcome. 31

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB On Saturday 20th April, Holmesfield Cricket Club removed the covers again for its 58th season at Millthorpe and 2nd season playing in Derbyshire County Cricket League’s Division 3 North by hosting Ambergate’s 1st XI. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Holmesfield scored a superb 358 runs with the loss of just 3 wickets. Opener Mayank Sharma carried his bat scoring a fabulous 150 runs and Zac Dann was also unbeaten after the allotted 46 overs, scoring 82 runs. Unfortunately, the visitors’ batsmen held out to score 175/8, so Holmesfield could only register a winning draw and 20 points. The match on 27th April scheduled to take place at Holmewood was cancelled. Marehay’s 2nd XI visited Millthorpe on 4th May, winning the toss and electing to field. The Vill couldn’t match their earlier batting prowess and were all out for 135 with only Mayank Sharma, Will Hellewell and Dave Ward reaching double figures. It took the visitors just 34.2 overs to beat the Holmesfield score, only losing 2 wickets in the process! Holmesfield travelled to Darley Dale on 11th May to play their 1st XI. Winning the toss, Holmesfield put the hosts in to bat who scored 110/7 off 42 overs. Holmesfield scored 107/8 after 40 overs in a rain affected match which was abandoned. The National Village Cup – Derbyshire Group 9 2nd round match at Brailsford scheduled for 12th May was conceded by Holmesfield due to not having enough eligible players. On 18th May, Holmesfield travelled to Breadsall just to the North of Derby to play their 1st XI. Winning the toss and batting first, Holmesfield scored 216/8. Neil Pearson was the pick of the batters, scoring 61 runs before being trapped LBW. Holmesfield’s bowlers were more than a match for their hosts as they were dismissed for just 126 runs earning Holmesfield their first victory of the season by 90 runs. A week later saw Denby travel to Millthorpe. Winning the toss and putting Holmesfield in to bat first, the Vill smashed 363/6 of their 46 overs. Openers Mayank Sharma (51) and Will Hellewell (65) put on 132 runs for the first wicket with Joe Poste just getting his half century with an unbeaten 52. The bowlers restricted Denby to just 237/5, thus Holmesfield recorded another winning draw. An encouraging start to a second season in Division 3 North sees Holmesfield sitting comfortable in mid-table – 5th in the twelve club competition – with two promotion places up for grabs, but also two relegation places to avoid! The next fixture is on Saturday 1st June against table topping Clowne Town CC so Holmesfield will need to be on their mettle for this one – please come and support us on match days in 2019! #UpTheVill First XI Home Fixtures at Millthorpe: Derbyshire League Division 3 North (1pm start): 1st June: Clowne Town, 15th June: Belper Meadows, 29th June: Matlock, 13th July: Holmewood, 27th July: Darley Dale, 3rd August: Breadsall, 24th August: Chesterfield, 7th September: Ashover.

We are always looking for people to help around the club in any capacity. Please contact Jimmy Pearson (Tel: 07803 288200) if you can offer any help. 35

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB JUNIOR SECTION

The Junior cricket season has begun at Holmesfield Cricket Club. Following a series of enjoyable and successful indoor training sessions over the winter months, we have two U11 teams and an U13 team entered into the North Derbyshire League. Holmesfield also have two U10 teams playing in the Derbyshire friendly League on a Friday evening. All our teams have made superb starts to the season with the U10s and the U11 Red teams currently unbeaten. The U11 blue team will be playing the semi-final of the cup in the coming weeks at home in Holmesfield and our newly formed U13s have experienced their first win of the season. There has been great teamwork, supportive play and fantastic skills on show from all our junior members. We look forward to seeing them grow from strength to strength over the season. The teams train every Friday night in Holmesfield and this has proved extremely popular with many other children also attending the hardball training. The All Stars cricket program for 5-8 year olds has also proved immensely successful with 50+ children enjoying and playing cricket. A wonderful Friday night atmosphere and great to see so many children learning and enjoying sport. A huge thank you to all those who have made this possible, from those who provide our superb catering and manage our teams, to those who provide us with fantastic facilities and grounds. We are all very much looking forward to the rest of the, hopefully, sunny season.

FEEL CONFIDENT WITH A DERBYSHIRE TRUSTED TRADER Finding a company that you can trust to do some work for you can be a bit daunting – how can you be sure that you won’t get ripped off? What if things go wrong? How do you choose between lots of different companies? These sorts of dilemmas were a driving force behind the setting up by Derbyshire County Council of the Trusted Trader scheme to help local people find traders and businesses that do a good job at a fair price and provide good customer service. That was back in 2008 and the popular scheme has gone from strength to strength. These days there are nearly 17,000 searches each month on the Trusted Trader website, www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt by people looking for reliable companies to use. Another ringing endorsement for the scheme was a recent survey which gathered feedback from more than 16,000 people who had used a Trusted Trader and an impressive 94% said they were very satisfied with the service they received. So people can have lots of confidence when employing one of the 1,200 traders who are part of the scheme. In the very unlikely event of someone having a problem with one of the traders then help is at hand. Derbyshire County Council trading standards officers can get involved in any queries involving Trusted Traders and seek to resolve them The scheme particularly helps to protect older and vulnerable adults by making it easier for them to use Trusted Traders rather than rogue traders who typically cold-call and use high pressure sales techniques. A recent development has been the inclusion of Financial Advisors who specialise in providing financial advice for people in later life and can help with matters like care fees, pensions and investments. Find out more about all aspects of Trusted Trader at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt or call 01629 536148. Enquiries are also welcome from businesses interested in signing up to the scheme – membership brings lots of benefits and costs only £70 - £100 per year. 60

We are indebted to David and Ruth Pearson for this splendid photograph taken at the top of Cartledge Lane around 100 years ago. The threshing engine belongs to the Morgan family who were based at Newgate Farm on Wilkin Hill, Barlow. David believes the Morgans once had up to six sets of threshing machines and they were hired out far and wide. The two men on the engine were probably from the Morgan family, but the three farm labourers seen sharing a jug of ale are unknown. The child is possibly Tommy Adlington who lived on The Green.
