PLANNING MATTERS Parish Council Comment on Applications NP/NED/0619/0652 : Mr Strafford-Stephenson – Bank Farm, Fox Lane, Holmesfield – Alteration and Extension to outbuilding to form ancillary living accommodation for dependent relative and change of use of land to form additional garden area. NO COMMENT 19/00786/FL : Mr. M. Jacques – Cartledge Hall Farm, Cartledge Lane, Holmesfield. COMMENT Whilst the Parish Council appreciate the need to renovate the existing agricultural buildings now that there is insufficient working land associated with the property, there are concerns that the proposal is over-development of the site in the conservation area with a number of new buildings. It would be preferred if more use could be made of the format of the existing buildings. Also, the access is a long a very narrow track, with a poor visibility display on to Cartledge Lane, which may be deemed unsuitable for increased traffic.. District Council Decisions 18/01092/FL : W. Haddon – The Cottage, Cowley Lane, Holmesfield – Demolition and rebuild of existing garage and stable (revised scheme of 18/00269/FL). GRANTED 19/00559/FL : Mr. P. Hunt – 20 Main Road, Holmesfield – Variation of Condition 2 of previously approved 18/01152/FL for change of use of public house dwelling (Conservation Area). GRANTED

POLICE REPORT The Police report for June 2019 includes five incidents of violence with one on Cordwell Lane, two on Park Avenue and two on Park Rise and theft on Park Avenue.

PACT As many of you know, I have been both District and Parish Councillor for Barlow & Holmesfield for 30 years. For one year I have been elected the Chair of North East District Derbyshire Council. During the year in office I would like to raise money for my own nominated charity. The Charity chosen is PACT (Parent Association of Children with Cancers & Tumours) which is based at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and runs alongside children having Cancer Treatment. I have visited the hospital and seen for myself the very worthwhile work being done and the comfort it provides. The charity owns a large house close to the hospital where parents are able to stay, free of charge, whilst their child is being treated so that the children are not left alone at difficult times. When the children leave the hospital to convalesce the charity provides outings for them to visit theme parks, go bowling, and enjoy many other appropriate activities. In addition to this, the charity provides total moral support during lifechanging periods Any help you think you may be able to give during the year would be much appreciated. If you can help please contact :Carol Huckerby Larkrise, New Road Millthorpe Holmesfield S18 7WN Tel: 0114-2890468 e-mail: cllr.huckerby@ne-derbyshire.gov.uk

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION August saw our last outdoor evening visit. We went to Eyam to Mrs Gill Bagshawe’s garden which is a plot of land near Eyam Museum where she grows flowers and herbs for cutting. Her clients will contact her with an order for wedding flowers or any special occasion and she will provide a bouquet of flowers and herbs in the colour specified and it works very well. For refreshments, a strawberry and mint drink plus nibbles was provided. It was another interesting visit and thanks to Hilary for organizing the visits. I have decided not to give a report of the show because a number of people were on holiday. Another big problem was the weather which has caused havoc with the vegetables and flowers so disappointing, also the date was rather early this year. However the members who entered put on a beautiful display of flowers plants herbs and a few vegetables. The cakes, scones, quiches and other goodies were as usual and first class. A big thank-you to our judges - they were great! Four trophies were awarded: • Rose Bowl for best in Floral and Foliage Section: Red Geranium in a Pot, Geraldine Austin • Cup for best in Vegetable section: Charlotte potatoes, Geraldine Austin • Trophy for best exhibit in Domestic Class: Parkin, Hazel Smith • Memorial Trophy for most points in show: Hazel Smith The next meeting is in Holmesfield Village Hall on Wednesday 4th September from 7.30pm when will be hearing a talk from Carl Leaman of Millthorpe Nursery on designing with plants. Plants from the Nursery will be on sale – please join us. On Wednesday 2nd October from 7.30pm our speaker is Jennie Street from Rhubarb Farm, Nether Langwith where we visited back in May. On Wednesday 6th November from 7.30pm is our Pie & Pea supper in the village hall.

HOLMESFIELD FLOWER CLUB

Our next meeting at Holmesfield Village Hall is on Wednesday 18 September, 7.30pm and is a workshop by club members entitled “Funky Flowers” . HOLMESFIELD LOCAL MARKET

The team would once again like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to those in the village, the exhibitors and the volunteers that braved the elements for our market on August 10th. The weather couldn’t have been much more unkind to us with strong winds and heavy rain but nevertheless we had a great attendance. We had more exhibitors than the previous market in May – 26 in total – featuring quite a few new and different ones such as cheese, teas, a coffee roaster and local pottery. We again had lots of positive feedback from both exhibitors and the public and we are always open for suggestions as to what we can do to improve the market going forward. Of course none of this could happen without the help of a lot of people in the village. Everyone that we have approached has been very kind and keen to lend support, whether it be with use of premises, car parking, signage, leaflets and a whole lot more. We do need more volunteers though, especially on the day when we have marquees to put up and take down, signage to put out, car parks to be manned etc. If you might be interested in helping in the organisation, or on the day itself, we would love to hear from you. You can email us at holmesfieldlocalmarket@gmail.com, phone us on 07827 854522, or call in to The Angel Inn and ask to speak to Mandy. Our next markets are on October 12th and December 7th. Please make sure you put them in your diary so that you can come along and support us and maybe bring a friend or two along as well. We look forward to seeing you. JULY 2019 WEATHER As I write this on 10th August, the weather is warm but rather wet. That is also a reasonable description of the weather we had in July. Holmesfield had an average (day and night) temperature of 16.7°C which is one degree warmer than my normal July temperature. However, July last year was even warmer at 18.4°C, so July this year was not a particularly unusual month. Nonetheless, it did contain one very hot day. On the 25th July my weather station recorded a maximum of 33.4°C (92.1°F) and some parts of the UK recorded their highest temperature on record. 33.4°C is the highest I have recorded since I got my weather station in June 2002. My previous maximum was 31.7°C in July 2015. In addition to being warm July was also rather wet with 30% more than the normal rainfall for the month. Warm and wet is good for the garden plants – the grass and indeed the weeds. I seem to have had to mow the lawns more than usual this summer. July contained a few very wet days with over an inch of rain. I remarked last month that June also contained few very wet days. However, I also commented that our occasional very wet days of more than one inch of rainfall are nothing in comparison to the fifteen inches that fell in Mumbai recently. The heavy rainfall that fell towards the end of July was the cause of the problem with the dam that forms the Toddbrook Reservoir above Whaley Bridge. Toddbrook dam was opened in 1840 – which is well before the Dale Dyke Dam that lies in the Loxley valley north-west of Sheffield. Dale Dyke dam collapsed in March 1864, causing the death of several hundred people. These early reservoirs were constructed using a clay core surrounded by earthworks. As a result of the Dale Dyke disaster there was a lack of confidence in this type of construction and hence a more robust type of construction was used in later dams. The upper Ladybower dams at Howden and Derwent – opened in 1912 and 1915 – were masonry dams. These are huge dams whose walls extend well into the hillside on each side of the valley and also downwards to almost the same height as the towers at each end. Confidence in clay and earthwork construction must have returned before the lower Ladybower dam was opened by George VI in 1945 to form what was then the largest artificial lake in Europe. However, this type of construction appears to require regular maintenance and indeed the Toddbrook dam, that has been used recently mainly for angling and sailing, has Brian Brown had many major repairs over the years.

MILLTHORPE WELL DRESSING This year the Millthorpe Well Dressers picture supported farming and rural life in the Peak district by raising £400 for the’ Farming and Life Centre’ in Bakewell. We wish to thank all who contributed to our efforts by donating money and helping any other way.

FIREARMS SURRENDER A recent force wide firearms surrender which aimed to reduce the number of guns in circulation across the county has seen 30 weapons handed in to Derbyshire Constabulary. The firearms surrendered, during a two-week period which began on 20 July, include a Browning 9mm pistol, two bullet firing rifles, three BB guns, five air rifles, six imitation pistols, six shotguns and seven air pistols. As well as an assorted quantity of ammunition. The last firearms surrender in Derbyshire was in 2017 and saw 194 firearms handed in including more than 30 shotguns, about 20 war trophies and more than 50 imitation firearms. Plus, hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Sergeant Pete Moss, who led this year’s firearms surrender in Derbyshire, said: “We are pleased with the result of this surrender as it ultimately means that there are 30 fewer weapons in circulation in Derbyshire, which could otherwise get into the wrong hands and be used in criminality in our county and beyond. Although comparison may be drawn to the previous number of weapons surrendered in 2017, I think the results this time only highlight the success of that previous campaign. Our aim is to continue to work with the public to cut the number of guns available and to keep our streets and communities safe. Hardyal Dhindsa, Derbyshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner said: “This initiative has made Derbyshire – and the wider world – a safer place.” 27

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB After a blank weekend due to rain, the Vill hosted bottom club Breadsall CC’s 1st XI on 3rd August. Winning the toss and batting first, Holmesfield scored 227-7 off their 46 overs with Will Hellewell hitting an unbeaten 103. The bowlers worked well as a team and shared the wickets as the visitors were dismissed for just 87 runs and earning Holmesfield a crucial victory. A trip to promotion chasing Denby near Ripley followed on 10th August to play their 2nd XI. Losing the toss and being put in to bat, Holmesfield scored 173 off their 25 overs in a rain affected game. The Vill came very close to earning a creditable draw but the hosts hit the required runs with just 2 balls to spare in a thrilling finish. Holmesfield were on the road again a week later to play top of the table Clowne Town CC. Winning the toss and batting first, the hosts scored 231 for the loss of 6 wickets. Tight bowling restricted Holmesfield who could only muster 158 runs in reply ensuring the home team won by 79 runs. A struggling Chesterfield 2nd XI were next to visit Millthorpe on 24th August and the Vill must have fancied their chances. Losing the toss and put in to bat, Holmesfield were all out for 122. Sensing a rare victory, Chesterfield only took 23 overs to hit the required runs for the loss of just 5 wickets to record a rare victory and possibly ensuring their own survival. With Holmesfield sat in mid-table and unlikely to get relegated, this marks a second season of consolidation in the Derbyshire League Division 3 North. With three matches left before the end of the season, only one home fixture remains on Saturday 7th September against fellow mid-tablers, Ashover CC’s 1st XI. Please come and support your team for one last time this year! #UpTheVill
