HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION Carl Leaman of Millthorpe Nursery came to the September meeting to give an illustrated talk on designing with plants. One of the secrets was to look closely at the garden from a different aspect – what do you see how could you improve it? Another important point was how big is the acreage of the garden? Armed with this information a trip to the garden centre to work out and buy the shrubs, plants, and possibly small trees required can be made. Is there a lawn in the garden? Its shape could be changed with plants being positioned in the corners, curved paths through the middle, change the shape of the borders. Also, the colour of the plants matching the colour of the leaves with plants and shrubs. It was an excellent talk and I am sure all the members went home inspired. The next meeting will be held in Holmesfield Village Hall on Wednesday 2nd October at 7.30pm when the speaker will be Jennie Street from Totley. She will talking about her charity The Rhubarb Farm which is situated at Hardwick Street, Nether Langwith, Nottinghamshire. It supports vulnerable people to change their lives for the better using horticultural schemes. Please come along – you will be most welcome. Tickets will be on sale for the Pie and Pea supper on Wednesday 6th November from 7.30pm. Please can you bring raffle prizes to the meeting. Please bring your own liquid refreshments. Julie is selling bulbs for the competition at the AGM in February at this meeting.

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL

The children of Penny Acres Primary School have, as always, made a super start to the new academic year and are already busy with their new topics. Our Infants have been busy with multi-sports and all things linked to toys and our Juniors have been sampling the delights of Cadbury World as part of their topic about chocolate. In other news, the decision meeting for the National Lottery Heritage Fund Midlands & East Region took place during the summer break and I’m delighted to say that our community project, ‘Our Schools, Our Stories’ project has been awarded the £10,000 as requested! Obtaining such funding has become increasingly more difficult and my thanks go to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for taking the time to consider my application and their willingness to work with me for the benefit of our wider school communities and to those of you that play the lottery. This project is aimed at the involving the wider community in school based projects and plans are already at an advanced stage. There will be many events throughout the school year, open to our wider communities, linked very closely to what our KS2 children will be learning in school during the summer term. A summer time culmination is on the cards where one of our schools in the Federation may be a little more Victorian for a weekend! AUGUST 2019 WEATHER August 2019 will probably be remembered as the hottest late bank holiday on record. My weather station recorded maximums of 25.5°C, 28.7°C and 27.1°C over the three days of the bank holiday. Weston Park weather station in Sheffield recorded a slightly higher temperature of 30.3°C on the 25th of August. However, that station is lower down than Holmesfield and it is also well within the city boundary, which is usually a little warmer than the countryside. Overall August was almost one degree higher than normal on my weather station. The Met. Office remarked that this summer was very unusual in being both warmer and also wetter than normal. How do we define summer? Most dictionaries define summer as ‘the warmest season of the year’. That means June to August in the northern hemisphere and December to February in the southern hemisphere. From an astronomical view the summer solstice is the logical middle of summer because the strength of the sun is a maximum around the 21st June. If you are interested in numbers, the maximum power of the sun is called the ‘solar constant’ and is just over one kilowatt per square metre. So if you lie in the sun you feel the warmth of about one kilowatt. The sun may be at its hottest around the summer solstice but our temperatures lag behind this because it takes time for the earth to warm up. The warmest day of the year is usually close to the middle of July in the UK, so it is logical to define summer as June to August. Returning to the Met Office remark that this summer was, unusually, not only very wet but also warm. I looked at my records since 2003 and the summer of 2007 was wetter and also as warm as this year, but it does appear to be true that wet summers are usually colder than normal. The warm wet summer has been fairly kind to the garden. As I write this note in early September, the beech edge is half cut, the plums and apples are ready and the grass is still growing. I think the second week of August is often quoted as the correct time to cut a beech hedge, but we are 800ft up in Holmesfield so perhaps a little later is allowed. Our strongest wind recorded in August was 42 mph on the 10th of the month. This was rather less than the 180mph suffered by the Bahamas! Our strongest winds are almost always during the winter months. My three strongest winds over the past 16 years have been in January with the strongest being 78mph on 28th January 2012. HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB Saturday 31st August saw Holmesfield travel to Belper to play promotion chasing Belper Meadows CC’s 1st XI. Winning the toss and putting the hosts in to bat first, Belper score an impressive 228-7 before declaring after 45 overs. The Vill’s batsmen were no match for the Belper bowling attack and were all out for 105. Saturday 7th September saw Ashover’s 1st XI travel to Millthorpe where it was hoped that Holmesfield could finish their home fixtures on a high and avoid a nervous final day of the season. Losing the toss and being put in to bat first, Holmesfield hit a confident 249-9 off their 46 overs with Zac Dann and Jimmy Pearson holding the middle order together, scoring 72 and 80 runs respectively. The Holmesfield faithful were then treated to a thrilling finale as Ashover chased down the Vill’s total. Needing four runs to win off three balls, Clinton Nobrega was the hero of the hour as his smart fielding ran out the last man to ensure the Vill won the game in an absolute nail biter to guarantee survival. The final match of the season saw Holmesfield travel to Matlock to play their 1st XI. After the heroics of the previous week, a weather affected game saw Holmesfield win the toss and bat first. A poor batting display saw the visitors declare on 119-9 after 32.5 overs. The hosts took just 25 overs to hit the required runs for the loss of just 4 wickets. Sunday 27th October, 7.30pm -9.00pm Juliet & Romeo by Lost Dog Dance Lost Dog’s new show reveals the real story of Romeo and Juliet. It turns out they didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding, they grew up and lived happily ever after. Well, they lived at least! Now they are 40ish, at least one of them is in the grips of a midlife crisis, they feel constantly mocked by their teenage selves and haunted by the pressures of being the poster couple for romantic love. They have decided to confront their current struggles by putting on a performance – about themselves. Their therapist told them it was a terrible idea. Powerful contemporary theatre-dance piece with two performers which imagines a different ending to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This is dance with a lot of talking (acting) so the story is very clear, and to reassure people unfamiliar with the play, the piece is as much about surviving a long-term relationship. Contains adult themes and some strong language. ***** The Stage, ***** The Guardian, **** The Independent, **** Time Out ‘Upturns the original narrative…The result is a brilliant piece of dance theatre that’s honest and insightful about long-term relationships – and very funny.’ – The Guardian. At the Peel Centre, High Street, Dronfield. Members £8, Non-members £12.50. Monday 28th October to Sunday 3rd November, 10.00am* - 4.00pm Artmakers Exhibition 2019 This group of three artists is made up of Marion Anniss (textile & print), Gina Hodges (painting & mixed media) and Jason Heppenstall (recycled metal sculptures). * Exhibition runs from 12pm-4pm on the first day. At the Hall Barn Centre, High Street, Dronfield. Free entry – donations welcome. Thursday 31st October, 7.30pm - 9.00pm Monastic Granges of Derbyshire with Mary Wiltshire Mary will bring to life the activity and influence which monastic communities had during some four centuries in Derbyshire and show how this can be interpreted today in the landscape. She and her colleague Sue Woore have always had a keen interest in interpreting the landscape. They have undertaken field work at the site of every grange catalogued and have reinforced this by researching documentary sources. At the Hall Barn Centre, High Street, Dronfield. Members £2, Non-members £4. 41

DRIVERS URGED TO BE DEER AWARE At this time of year, deer collisions peak as many of the animals cross roads seeking new territories. The highest risk of collisions is between sunset and midnight, and the hours shortly before and after sunrise. Ashley Knott, Derbyshire police’s Traffic Management officer, explains: “Wild animals have no road sense. Signs to warn drivers are placed at locations where the animals are known to be active and are likely to cross. Our advice is to slow down and anticipate the risk. This will give you more time to react should deer be on or alongside the road.” Motorists are asked to be alert wherever they are travelling across Derbyshire’s road network, not just on rural roads. In recent years, incidents involving deer and other livestock have been reported on major routes too. Highways England has teamed up with The Deer Initiative to give the following advice to drivers, involved in a collision with a deer: If you hit a deer when driving, your priorities in this order are: • keep yourself and anyone with you as safe as you can • park your car in the safest place with hazard lights on • call an ambulance if human injuries warrant it • call the police, giving as precise a location as you can Usually it is best not to approach live deer. Doing so may cause them to run across traffic causing another accident. If you see an injured deer on the roadside: • pull over at the next safe place. • call the police and we will deal with road safety issues. We also have access to a specialist who will know the best course of action for the animal if it is alive. Ashley Knott continues: “There are several things drivers can do to reduce the risk when travelling around dawn or dusk. If your headlights are on, use full-beams when you can, but dip them if you see deer as they may ‘freeze’ on the spot instead of leaving the road. Also, if you see a deer, look out for others. They generally roam in herds and follow each other quite closely.” For more information and safety advice, visit www.deeraware.com Carole Woodall (Police, Communications Administrator, Derbyshire) 45

ONLINE CRYPTO SCAMS The Police Cyber Crime Unit would like to make you aware of Crypto investment scams that are increasing and becoming a real problem. Social media adverts are being used to lure people into depositing small amounts of investment money with malicious trading sites. Scammers then pretend the investment has made a profit & convince victims to deposit more. Once the victim has committed more funds the scammers pretend to personally manage the victims trading account. Shortly after the investment makes a loss and the victim is told they need to pay the shortfall. If the victim ever tries to withdraw funds they find no option to do so. There are many malicious sites being used for this but the most prominent ones encountered recently are coinipop.com and coin-bits.com. These sites are linked and work together to facilitate the fraud. They have positive fake reviews and social media pages These help to trick people into believing they are legitimate. DO NOT USE THESE SITES. They are fraudulent. Please help to protect other people from becoming victims by raising awareness of these fraudulent sites. We are indebted to Tom and Rachael Pearson for sharing this sobering view from the Travellers Rest car park. So much has changed since this photograph was taken on 18th September 1972. Both pubs seen here have pulled their last pints and the Horns Inn building now looks quite different following removal of the porch and other extensions as part of its conversion to a private dwelling. Whitbread’s former Tennant Brothers’ Sheffield brewery closed in 1993. The Travellers Rest closed about a year ago and is itself now undergoing conversion to a house. Nottingham’s Home Ales brewery closed in 1996.
