Hirers who may be affected by this law must contact North East Derbyshire District Council (Licensing) for advice well in advance of the function for which the hall is to be booked. The notice, if required, must be shown to the lettings officer at least ten days before the function and displayed in the hall during the function.

FUNERALS IN THE PARISH The funeral of Judith Wild took place in St. Swithin’s Church on 13th November. Jessie Smythe was laid to rest in Holmesfield churchyard on 22nd November after a funeral service at St William of York’s Catholic church in Sheffield. 9

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION At December’s meeting an interesting talk was given by Jude Warrinder, a local representative of the Plantlife organisation. Plantlife is interested in the protection of our British wild flowers, plants and fungi. Their focus is on raising the profile and protection of wild plants with Government agencies and also to protect their habitats such as bogs, salt marshes and meadows. They are also wanting gardeners among others to help to protect wild plants by not using peat or pesticides in our gardens and to plant wild flowers such as Foxgloves to encourage bees; but of course not to take them from the wild ! If people would like to join Plantlife they can do so at www.plantlife.org.uk or ring 0172 234 2730. The organisation offers opportunities to donate to specific plants or places and conservation holidays . The next meeting is on Wednesday 8th January and will be a talk given by Dr Steven Furniss on Alpine Gardens. On Wednesday 5th February there will be our Annual General Meeting and also the Hyacinth competition – so please bring along your Hyacinths !

HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP GOSFORTH VALLEY WALK Sorry there is no walk in January but on Wednesday 26th February Robin Greetham will lead a walk from the Jolly Farmer pub in Gosforth Valley. We will go up to Cartledge and on to Cowley Hall before heading back to the Jolly Farmer where we will have lunch (optional). The walk is approx. 4½ miles long and a short cut is available. The cost of the walk is £3 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church maintenance fund. If you would like to come just turn up on the day. RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield, S18 7WB (Tel: 2890686) for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. NOVEMBER 2019 WEATHER I feel embarrassed to write yet again about rainfall. Last month I noted that both September and October had been very wet. Well, as you probably remember, November was even wetter than the previous two months. The total rainfall that I recorded for the three autumn months was 527mm or about 21 inches. November itself was the wettest month that I have recorded since 2002 and I think the autumn was reported as the wettest on record in Sheffield. The wettest day of the month was on Thursday 7th when more than three inches of rain fell. There were only two dry days in the whole of November. My weather station records the dominant direction of the wind and in November this year the wind was from the East on 24 of the 30 days. This is quite unusual as most of our winds come from the West. That is why the western side of the UK is, on average, wetter than the eastern side. However, this November the winds from the east were able to pick up moisture from the North Sea and then drop it on our heads. The rainfall radar maps during the month showed rain streaming over Lincolnshire and then over our area. I enjoy walking around Holmesfield but at the moment most of our footpaths and bridleways are extremely muddy so I have been confined to the roads. I do wonder how people coped with the muddy paths when there were fewer well surfaced roads in this area. There was a man called Edward Carpenter who lived in Millthorpe from 1882 until 1928. He was a nationally known poet, philosopher and one of the founders of the Labour movement. Now it is documented that he attracted visitors that included W B Yeats, John Galsworthy, E M Forster, George Bernard Shaw, H G Wells, J Ramsey MacDonald and Captain Oates. It is said that his visitors would arrive by train at Dore & Totley Station and then walk the four miles to Millthorpe. They must have had some very muddy walks from Dore to Fanshawe Gate, up Hob Lane and then down Grimsell Lane to Millthorpe. I can see Captain Oates, the Antarctic Explorer with Captain Scott, coping with the mud but I wonder about some of the others. Actually Hob Lane, the bridleway leading from opposite Penny Acres School down to Fanshawe Gate Lane, has very recently been resurfaced and is very pleasant to walk along. Brian Brown

DRONFIELD POLICE SNT A new Sergeant has taken over the running of our Safer Neighbourhood policing teams in Killamarsh, Eckington, Dronfield, Unstone and the surrounding areas. Sergeant Dave Wilson, who has worked for the police for almost 20 years starting in roles in the enquiry office and control room, which was then based in Chesterfield, before becoming a police officer in 2008. Dave has worked on the response teams in Chesterfield, Clay Cross and in the Amber Valley, and was also the Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant for the teams in the south Chesterfield area for more than three years, a time which he feels has been a highlight in his policing career. He said: “I was inspired to join the police by both my Dad and Uncle, who were police officers and I’ve really enjoyed my career so far. In particular my time as a Safer Neighbourhood team Sergeant was one of the best times as I felt the role was about everything I joined the police to do and it’s great to be back. “Our Safer Neighbourhood policing teams are all about making sure we are engaging with our local residents, solving problems and concerns alongside the different partner agencies and organisations and targeting what we do to meet the needs of our community while taking account of any issues of threat, risk and vulnerability in our area.” Before moving back into the community policing role, Dave was involved in a force wide review of Safer Neighbourhood policing in Derbyshire. Outside of work, Dave enjoys music and plays a guitar amongst other instruments, and he used to be in a band. Sgt.
