PLANNING MATTERS Parish Council Comment on Applications 19/01177/FLH : Mr. S. Heald – Pennon Lea, Millthorpe Lane, Holmesfield – Demolition of existing garage and construction of single storey rear and side extensions with formation of a new gable end to roof and balcony. COMMENT Whilst there are no objections in principle to the application, concerns are raised about the inappropriately large area of flat roof, which it is considered would benefit from a pitched roof to match the existing bungalow. 19/01197/FL : Mr. & Mrs. Corker – Cowley Hall Farm, Cowley Lane, Holmesfield – Application for American barn style stables and manege (revised scheme of 19/00325/FL). NO COMMENT 19/00786/FL : Mr. M. Jacques – Cartledge Hall Fam, Cartledge Lane, Holmesfield – Demolition of a range of existing buildings (formerly used in association with the livery business and riding school); conversion of existing buildings (formerly used in association with the livery business and riding school) to form a single dwelling; restoration and retention of ancillary building: and erection of four new dwellings with associated landscaping, parking and access (conservation area / affecting a public right of way). COMMENT To comment that whilst the Parish Council appreciate the need to renovate the existing agricultural buildings now that there is insufficient working land associated with the property. There are concerns that the proposal is over development of the site in the conservation area with a number of new buildings. It would be preferred if more use could be made of the format of the existing buildings. Also the access is a long and very narrow track, with a poor visibility splay on to Cartledge Lane, which may be deemed unsuitable for increased traffic. District Council Decisions None.

500 ISSUES OF HOLMESFIELD PARISH NEWSLETTERS The first Holmesfield Parish Council newsletter was published in 1977 as just a flyer proposed by the then Chairman, Geoff Willan, and then delivered to every household in the village. The Parish Council subsequently produced a black and white magazine format with various editors up until March 2012. In April 2012, John Boswell took over editorship and the magazine was enhanced further by the addition of a full colour cover produced by Nick Wheat who has continued as editor from 2016. This edition sees the 500th Newsletter produced by Holmesfield Parish Council and the councillors would like to take this opportunity to thank the editors both past and present, Ken and Sandra Hunt who send the bundles of magazines to the dedicated team of local people who have delivered the newsletters in all weathers, and the many advertisers who have supported us over the years which helps to fund the ability to maintain a free copy to every household in the Parish. Finally, a special thank-you to the head-master of Penny Acres school, Mr Radcliffe, plus his staff and pupils for the splendid photograph that adorns the front cover of this special issue. Here’s to the next 500 newsletters!

TO ALL DOG OWNERS Dog fouling issues are the worst they have ever been in Holmesfield. Most people take poo bags out with then and remove it, but others give all dog owners a bad name by leaving it. The irresponsible ones do not use poo bags, they go out under the cover of darkness and think picking it up does not apply to them. Some go out in broad daylight and leave a mess on footpaths used by the children on their way to school. It is not in one particular place but in several areas in the village. The small minority of dog owners who do not clean up after their dog are putting children at risk of serious illness. It is not nice to step in it, push a wheelchair through it, drive a mobility scooter through it or worse fall in it. REMINDER: It is against the law to allow a dog to foul in a public place and make no attempt to clean it up. The maximum penalty from a criminal prosecution in a court may be ÂŁ1,000. Please keep Holmesfield dog poo clean.

HOLMESFIELD FLOWER CLUB There is no Flower Club meeting in February. A new programme is in preparation for 2020 and we look forward to welcoming members and guests next year!

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT SPEEDING MOTORISTS IN HOLMESFIELD? If so the village needs your help to educate drivers in the error of their ways! The Parish Council have over several years requested assistance from Derbyshire Highways to manage the speed through the 30mph areas of the village especially on the two “B” roads. We have suggested reducing the speed limits approaching the village to allow motorists the opportunity to slow down before entering the restricted areas; or to provide reduced road width at the 30mph areas to give the impression of a narrowing of the road or to provide illuminated warning/ smiley faces advising of speeds. Derbyshire CC’s policy is to only implement speed/safety measures after major accidents and thankfully we have not had any of these. “CREST” the Casualty Reduction Enforcement Support Team have on several occasions been operating speed cameras around the village but it is the Police Safer Neighbourhood teams (SNT’s) who are managing what is now termed the Community Speed Watch (CSW) CSW is a national initiative where active members of local communities join with the support of the Police to monitor speeds of vehicles using radar speed detection devices. Volunteers from local communities work alongside Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) to monitor speeding traffic in their areas. Vehicles that are found by CSW volunteers to be driving in excess of the speed limit are referred to the Police with the aim of educating drivers to reduce their speed. In cases where education is blatantly ignored and evidence of repeat or excessive offences are noted, enforcement and prosecution may follow. Volunteers will receive appropriate training and annual refreshers, and are supported by the Safer Neighbourhood Policing Teams (SNTs). The scheme aims to cater for the problem of real or perceived speed related offending. Through partnership with the community it is to be used in circumstances that are necessary, justifiable and proportionate to: • Reduce death and injury on the roads • Improve the quality of life for local communities • Improve driver behaviour through education • Expand public knowledge of the dangers of inappropriate speed Speed Watch activity is not about interfering with neighbours’ behaviour; it is a proactive solution to improve road safety and the quality of life for everyone in the community. Who can volunteer? Anybody over the age of 18 can volunteer. Anybody over the age of 80 who wishes to volunteer must submit their details to the provider of Derbyshire Constabulary’s insurance for further consideration. Volunteer Training When attending CSW training, volunteers can expect to cover health and safety, CSW guidelines and how to use the radar devices. There will be an opportunity for a member of Derbyshire Constabulary to head out with the groups on their first site check for further demonstration of the radar device. So are you willing to volunteer – if so in the first instance contact Phil Reaney tel 0114 2891167 or email at preaney@btinternet.com. We cannot hope to manage speeding traffic without your help 17

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION Our speaker at the January meeting was Dr Steven Furniss who gave a very interesting talk on the topic of Alpine Gardens. He covered his own life story whilst at the same time explaining that his grandmother had been his inspiration as a gardener, and despite encouragement from his father to take up sports by the time he became a student, he had spent his grant on acquiring a plot of land on which to create a garden for his now large collection of Alpines. He went on to describe the trials and tribulations involved in establishing his life time’s ambition of having a comprehensive alpine garden. It was agreed that his talk was excellent and very much enjoyed. The Association’s Garden Visits and Program Organiser, Mrs Hillary Olson, is hoping to arrange a evening visit to Dr Furniss’s garden and is awaiting confirmation of this. The next meeting will be the Annual General Meeting on 5th February. Please remember to bring your Hyacinths for the Hyacinth Competition. Whatever their stage of growth they could be the winners! The following meeting on 4th March will be Mr Andy Hubbuck who will be giving a talk on Showing and Growing Sweet Peas. At the meeting on 1st April, Mr Norman Crowson will be talking about the Lea Brook Valley. In May, evening visits to gardens begin – if you are interested in joining the Gardening Association, you can come along to any meeting to give us a whirl. There is a small fee to join and in the winter our meetings begin at 7.30 pm at Holmesfield Village hall on the first Wednesday of the month (a little earlier in the Summer). If more information is required you can ring our Garden visits and programme Organiser Hillary Olson on 01142890927 or Frances Webb on 01142890003.

Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield, S18 7WB (Tel: 2890686) for more details. HOLMESFIELD LOCAL MARKET The Christmas Local Market was a very special event for the market team. Our objective was to make it the biggest, best and most inclusive community activity in Holmesfield in 2019! There were over 40 stall holders, pitched over 3 sites (the village hall, church hall and Angel) and there were many special moments in leading up to the big day! The preparation started the first weekend in December, when united with the Holmesfield Village Society, we meet on the 1st Sunday to put up the village Christmas tree. This was kindly donated by the Holmesfield Village Society, delivered by Charlie Village and decorated by lots of volunteers from the market team as well as a big thanks to Alistair Fearnehough and Nick Wheat for their organisation. We were delighted to be able to donate new Christmas decorations for the tree. The next big job was sorting out Santa. With the support of the school, and the previous Santa organisers, Santa made it on the day! A special thanks to the headmaster, Mr. Radcliffe. The market team were able to donate Santa’s presents and all proceeds from the Santa stall were donated to the village school. A big thanks also to Will Denniff for sorting the ‘mechanical reindeer’, Debbie Blagden for her advice and elf uniforms, Andrea and Adam for the amazing red sledge and all of Santa’s helpers from the school. Unfortunately, we didn’t have as many children as we thought, but hopefully now that everyone knows where to find Santa we will see more next year! We were blessed with another beautiful sunny Market day. Helen on the Veg Stall was 25

particularly happy it wasn’t raining, as it can get cold at the front of the Angel! The Village Hall was really busy with lots of new stall holders joining including local saddlery – Excell Hackamore, a chocolatier (Cocoa Luxury), hand knitted cowls (Warm Spirit Cowls) and loads of festive gifts and presents. It was great to see other local stallholders back supporting the market too – Moorland Meats, Feather Fancies, Moss Valley and Woodthorpe Cider to name but a few. There was a special tinsel trail that joined the locations together, mulled wine and Christmas music which really gave the market a special festive atmosphere. And for those of you who entered the Christmas Raffle for the Turkey..thank you. We raised over £250 for the village. Thank you so much Nick Horsley for donating one of your amazing Holmesfield reared turkeys for the prize. We could not have had such a successful market without all the help from our volunteers.. who came from as far afield as Bolton, Clare Storer and her son Charlie Boland. Charlie helped on the bread stall with Kirste and Ciara. He’s probably our youngest helper to date at 9! But a big thanks to all our other volunters too; Richard and Kay Burley, Helen, Steve Heald, Scott, Kate Timms, Adam Kilner, John and Alison. If anyone would like to join us just send us an email : holmesfieldvillagemarket@gmail.com The next markets planned are Saturday 25th April, 4th July, 10th October and 5th December. But we will remind you nearer to the time. See you all then! Happy Spring! Aoife Kenny

AWARD FOR VILLAGE BUSINESS Holmesfield-based Tom Pearson & Sons has won a prestigious national award from the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) for its design and installation of a unique stained-glass entrance door. The fourth-generation family firm has been manufacturing and installing bespoke joinery products from its workshop in Holmesfield for more than 100 years. It specialises in heritage and conservation work and was approached by a client who wanted to transfer original stained-glass panels into a bespoke front door. The end result delighted the customer and was declared Best Product Design in Wood at the 2019 BWF Awards. The company designed a vented system that incorporated a clear toughened double-glazed unit. The stained glass was then suspended in front and beaded into place, with a vented bottom bead and further venting to the top bead to prevent moisture build up. The steel bar that the stained glass panels were originally tied to was challenging to incorporate but the company managed to retain the aesthetics that the client desired at no detriment to the overall performance of the door. The Award, which is sponsored by Teknos, was presented to the company at the BWF’s Annual Dinner and Awards ceremony in London. The BWF Awards celebrate the best of the best in UK woodworking, recognising technical innovation, design, process efficiencies, health & safety and the rising stars of the industry. Helen Hewitt, Chief Executive of BWF said: “Tom Pearson & Sons’Award entry embodies everything that we want to champion as an industry. The judges were impressed by the highly inventive approach to the clients brief; the stained-glass door showed a commitment to excellence. The team understood the customer’s requirements and designed a solution that enabled the original glass to be incorporated without sacrificing door performance. The quality of the entries we received this year was exceptional, with each individual and company epitomising the talent, creativity and professionalism of our industry. Our sector makes a significant contribution to the UK’s construction and manufacturing industries, and it’s fantastic to come together at the BWF Awards to champion the outstanding talent and achievement that make our industry so successful.” Nick Pearson, Director, from Tom Pearson & Sons comments: “This is a complete shock, we’re a very small business and could not be believe it when they said that we’d won the award. We have a well equipped shop that makes a variety of doors and windows – every day is different, with lots of orders coming in. Quality is at the heart of what we do here at Tom Pearson & Sons and wood plays a major role in that. I’m the fourth generation of the firm and wood has been with me all my life.” The prize was presented at a celebratory awards evening held at the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, London. 31

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL

Thank-you to pupils Emma White and Isobel Hodges who have written about recent activities enjoyed by the pupils. On Friday 17th January, years 5 and 6 went to CrossFit and had lots of fun. Our new topic is Invaded Islands and we have learned some Viking words such as Valhalla, Thing, Asgard, Jarl, Karl, Longboat, etc. We made some shields out of cup coasters. A book that we are reading is called Viking Boy. After we read the blurb, we were put in to groups of 3 or 4 to do some drama of the first scene in the book. It was really fun for all the groups to see each others performance and we got to see how good they were. On Fridays we play the trumpet with our teacher, Mrs. Salt. It is such fun to learn all the notes so our fingers can go on the valves to play the notes. So to sum Penny Acres up, it is a pretty awesome place! - Emma. Recently, on Friday 17th January, year 5 and 6 have done CrossFit and had lots of fun. Mrs Smith brought us and took lots of pictures. If you go to the Penny Acres website you can see them. The topic this year is Invaded Islands. So far we have painted coasters to look like Viking shields. The book we are reading is called Viking Boy and we did some drama from the start of the book. On Mondays we go swimming for ½ an hour. We are having lots of fun and really love coming to school in the morning - Isabel

DECEMBER 2019 WEATHER December was a fairly average month in terms of the weather. It made a nice change after the run of very wet months in the autumn. Overall, 2019 was almost 50% wetter than average. This sounds like a record for rainfall but in fact 2012 was almost as wet. Our annual rainfall can vary very widely from year to year. This must be a problem for the water authorities as they have to cope with very dry years such as 2003 and 2011 when only about 60% of our normal rainfall fell. Severn Trent Water Authority is one of ten such authorities that look after water and sewage for England and Wales. Their web site says that water levels were at 97.6% on the 23rd December 2019 and about 80% in December 2018. When we visited Ladybower a few weeks ago the upper dams were overflowing so that must have been 100%. I am not sure where these levels are measured or indeed where our water comes from in Holmesfield. Ladybower and Carsington reservoirs must account for most of the stored water but there are smaller local reservoirs and there is a small service reservoir on Cartledge Lane. In addition, Severn Trent takes about 30% of our tap water from bore holes. Parts of Holmesfield are quite high of course and an electric pump is needed to supply our cold water at sufficient pressure. As a result, if we have a power cut then the cold water supply can also fail. December 2019 was slightly warmer than a normal December, and as I write this note on the 4th January, it is still quite warm. There is no snow in the forecast for the next two weeks. On average we get about 14 days of lying snow each winter but we do get some winters with many more days than that and also some winters without any snow. On average, about one winter in seven does not see any lying snow. The winters with prolonged snow were 1962/3 and 1978/9 when there was snow around for almost 70 days during December, January and February. Brian Brown
