CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL ADVICE Derbyshire County Council are working closely with their NHS colleagues, and other local authorities to ensure that the people of Derbyshire are kept well informed. You’ll find lots of information around the virus, how to prevent its spread and what to do if you’re concerned that you might be at risk. If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days then contact NHS 111. If you live with others and you have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill. If any other members of the household develop symptoms within that 14 day period then they must self-isolate for 7 days from the point they displayed symptoms. This may mean they need to selfisolate for longer than 14 days For example if they develop symptoms on day 13 they will need to self-isolate for a total of 20 days. The person who first displayed symptoms in the household can stop self-isolating after 7 days. HOLMESFIELD PARISH COUNCIL PARISH ELECTORS’ MEETING The meeting of Parish Electors is due to take place in Holmesfield Village Hall at 7.00pm on 8 July 2020. ANNUAL MEETING of the PARISH COUNCIL The Annual Meeting of the Parish Council is due to take place in Holmesfield Village Hall following the Parish Electors meeting on 8 July 2020 Both meetings will be held in the Main Hall to allow adherence with social distancing guidelines. Any resident in the Parish is welcome to attend either or both meetings.
2020 ANNUAL REPORT OF HOLMESFIELD FOOTPATHS AND BRIDLEWAYS SOCIETY We have had a mixed year. The committee have met regularly throughout the year, but like many meetings they came to an abrupt stop with the lockdown. I’m afraid no more work has been carried out in Kitchen Wood, despite emails and phone calls to the Woodland Trust. The rights of way department at Matlock has resurfaced Hob Lane and overall an excellent result has been achieved. The department planned to resurface Carr Road but this enormous task has been deferred. We have concerns about a proposed development at Cartledge which may well affect the safety of the footpath down to Millthorpe. Finally, sadness must be expressed at the loss of Mrs Jessie Smythe who died unexpectedly in November 2019. A stalwart of the HFBS committee, her contributions will greatly be missed. BABY AND CHILDREN’S CLOTHING APPEAL Baby Basics – a charity based at Sheffield University – have had a 450% increase in referrals in the last 3 weeks and are now almost out of clothing for boys and girls from newborn up to 7 years old. They are also accepting toiletries, small toys, craft things and books as they support growing families in need . There is a collection point at the Angel Inn so we can make sure it it gets to families in desperate need. CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT HELPLINE Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust recognises the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic is taking on our communities and the impact that the pandemic is having on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of people in Derbyshire. It has launched a new telephone-based support line for local people of all ages and their carers who are experiencing increased distress or anxiety during the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The new service also intends to support people who are experiencing a reduction in their usual mental health care services, as a result of changes that have been made to support the pandemic. The support line, which will initially be available between the hours of 9am – midnight every day of the week can be contacted on 0300 790 0596. VEHICLE SECURITY WARNING Over the past few weeks police officers have noticed an increase in thefts from and of vehicles throughout the North East Derbyshire and Bolsover district including Dronfield and Barlow. As well as registration plates, spare wheels have been taken, and valuables including an iWatch, a sat nav, mobile phone, glasses, a tablet and tools have also been stolen from inside both cars and vans. While policing plans are in place to help target this trend, we’re urging people to make sure their vehicles and valuables are safe and secure. Inspector Rob Bowns, who is in charge of policing in the Bolsover and North East Derbyshire district areas, said: “Our officers are working to investigate these crimes, and patrols are carried out throughout our area to help deter offences, but we need your help. It’s easy for vehicle security to go to the back of people’s minds once they’ve parked up their car or van, and unfortunately this can put them more at risk of their car or van being targeted.” 15

Visits and talks for July and August are now cancelled and at present it is difficult to make new arrangements social distancing in the village hall is being considered but at present it is closed and no opening date yet arranged. The coach trip to Doddington is hopefully still going ahead now that the Hall has reopened. SWITHIN’S CHURCH APPEAL The congregation at Holmesfield church would like to say a very big ‘thank you’ to the very kind people who have recently sent donations following our appeal in last months Newsletter we are so,so grateful ! Words cannot express the great difficulties everyone of us is experiencing at the moment. The situation is horrendous with our World being turned upside down. Holmesfield would not be the same without our church which we all have the right to use for christenings ,weddings and funerals. At the moment we have virtually no income yet we have ongoing expenses e.g. the clock in the tower is due for servicing and the cost is about £300. This is a facility for the village as well as the church,of course we have many other bills to pay. Please help to keep this building and the churchyard as an asset for the village community. Contributions large or small towards these expenses are always gratefully received. HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE Over the month of June, the government have slowly but surely released another piece of vital information that enabled us to get on the road to ‘normality’. Those of us who have been shopping for the vulnerable have seen a change in our weekly routines, less requests for shopping, fewer people needing pharmacy runs, and an overall sense of independence coming back to those whom we have tried to protect for the last 90 days. The government’s latest advice is; People who are shielding remain vulnerable and should continue to take precautions but may now choose to leave their home, as long as they are able to maintain strict social distancing. For more information check out www.gov.uk As a community we have really come together, as well as protecting and supporting those who were in need, we also made new friends, as well as supporting each other through this very unusual and in a way quiet bizarre experience! Only yesterday I received a card that was hand delivered, thanking this group. It read ‘To Aoife and all the Holmesfield Support group, a very big thank you for all your kindness during the lockdown period’ the writer noted that her ‘shopping was delivered cheerfully, the food boxes from the Angel were wonderful and delivered, and the little added touches like the Union Jack and cake on VE day made an isolating experience bearable’. But I think the final words in the card made me realise that the little idea that came into our minds on the 15th March, to set up a Support Network for the village was the right thing to do ..’You should all be very proud of yourselves as so many people would have really struggled without your help’. I suppose this letter really sums up the impact this group has had on the community. I would also like to thank you all for your support in making the group happen and work! It would be a shame to lose everything we have gained over the last 90 days, and so we hope to continue to act as a community network in a new form, which I suppose will naturally evolve. We were not sure if the well dressing would take place this year, so someone suggested a Scarecrow competition! So this month we are encouraging everyone to participate and build a Scarecrow, we have already seen some fantastic works of art out there! The competition is running from now until the 12th July. There are five Categories and prizes to be won, the judges have been carefully selected from our community and won’t be taking bribes! See the poster earlier in the magazine for full details. 25

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB 2020 As we enter the 12th week of lockdown there is yet again no clear sign of when we might actually play some! There are ongoing discussions about the possibility of starting in mid-July with leagues being split in two, geographical area will decide who will participate in each section in order to reduce travel distances. There is still a long way to go and much to be agreed, but at least it’s being discussed. Similar discussions are taking place regarding junior cricket and it is hoped that this may start before the local senior league cricket. Ground Maintenance: Most of the major work around the ground has now been completed – the area behind bottom boundary cleared, trees pruned and thinned, hedges cut back and boundaries strimmed. The external painting to the pavilion is complete and the inside about 90% done. Many thanks to the small group of volunteers who have stepped up to the task and a special thanks to the ‘Mums’ who have been busy painting the inside of the pavilion over the last 10 days, some rather skeptical people have claimed they are desperate to get away from the kids for a rest! Junior Cricket: Hot off the Press - Due to the latest changes announced by the government we can now offer junior coaching sessions for 5 children at a time, subject to social distancing rules. We are proposing outdoor nets at the ground, on the pitch with the batting cage on the square. This will be hour slots, 4-5, 5-6, 6-7, initially Wednesday and Thursday (50 mins bowling and rotation batting, with a 10 minute turnaround, for cleaning and changeover). Depending on the take up, success and Rob’s availability we may be able to add more sessions on. The sessions will be hosted by Rob Heyes, level 2 coach who plays for Yorkshire U18s in the Academy Squad and Doncaster CC. Cost will be £5 per session. Please contact Antony Bolsover if you want to book a session. The first session took place as we were about to go to press so it’s great to be able to show the ground being used. The sessions were fully booked up and the demand suggests we will have to increase to three days a week straight away. The feed back from parents and children was all positive with everybody enjoying the opportunity to get out and do some sport at last. More in the next newsletter, hopefully with announcements about actually playing matches, fingers crossed! 31

TEXT MESSAGE SCAMS Scam text messages are being reported which make claims that UKGOV has issued a payment of £458 to all residents as part of its promise to battle COVID-19. The messages contain a link, which recipients are asked to click on in order to apply for the money. These messages are a scam. Do not click on links or reply to unsolicited text messages or emails. If you receive this message or similar, delete it. Top 4 text message scams include: • Fake URL links to “claim” supposed Covid-19 related payments • Lockdown fine • Offers of health supplement • Offer of financial support that appears to be from your bank

DOMESTIC ABUSE HELP STILL AVAILABLE Victims of domestic abuse are being reminded that support is still available to them 24 hours a day, despite the current coronavirus pandemic. In Derbyshire there are a variety of organisations that can help support domestic abuse victims – no matter their situation. Detective Chief Inspector Brian Bilby, Derbyshire Constabulary’s lead for domestic abuse, said: “While many things have changed in light of the current crisis one thing remains the same – that the force and our partners remain committed to protecting the victims of domestic abuse. If you are in a situation where you are fearful for your life you should call 999 immediately – no matter the time of day. DERBYSHIRE LIBRARY SERVICE All 45 Derbyshire libraries, the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery and the Derbyshire Record Office in Matlock are closed to protect staff and customers using the services from the risk of coronavirus and to help to prevent its spread. The two mobile libraries have also been taken off the road for the foreseeable future. A date has not been set for the services to reopen but it is estimated they could remain closed for at least 12 weeks. Library customers who have borrowed items from their library are being advised to hold on to them until they can return them when their local service re-opens. All fines will be waived. There’s a wealth of books, newspapers and magazines available online from Derbyshire Libraries and customers can find out how to access these and other information by registering using their library card, if they haven’t already signed up. People can also still access online information and resources from the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery and the Derbyshire Record Office. Derbyshire County Council Leader Councillor Barry Lewis said: “We appreciate that libraries are regarded as a valuable community resource and we are sorry to have to take this significant action but we trust residents will understand that we have had to make this difficult decision to protect the health and well-being of residents, communities and staff.

MAY 2020 WEATHER May continued the dry trend of March and April to give us what the Met Office said was the fourth driest spring since their records began in 1862. The previous very dry springs were in 1893, 1990 and 2011. My weather station only recorded 73mm of rainfall over the three months this year. This is actually slightly less than the rainfall in the spring of 2011. Spring was very dry but you may remember that February was extremely wet and indeed the year so far has still been slightly wetter than usual. Not only was spring dry, but it was also very sunny. I recorded 304 hours of bright sunshine in May and the Met Office says that it was the sunniest May on record. The days are long of course as we head towards the summer solstice. The long sunny days did seem to be endless and by 31st May, the grass in the garden was beginning to struggle and turn brown. However, I am writing this note on the 8th June – the rain has returned and the sunshine has disappeared. I sowed some grass seed about three weeks ago and nothing much came of it whilst the sun shone, even though I tried to keep the ground damp. However, the rainfall of the last few days has helped to germinate the seeds and the new grass is now growing. The seeds seem to be able to tell the difference between the water from my hosepipe and rainfall from the heavens. May this year was also warmer than a normal May and I recorded a maximum of 25.3°C (77.5°F) on the 20th May. The lovely warm weather meant that we could spend time sitting outside and talking – at a distance – to visiting members of our family. The night skies were also clear and this gave us an excellent view of the SpaceX rocket speeding to join the International Space Station on the 30th May. It has quite definitely been a spring to remember. Shakespeare was wrong when he wrote ‘Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May’. So also were Flanders and Swann when they described May as ‘Farmers fear unkindly May, Frost by night and hail by day’. Let us hope that they were also wrong about June, described by them as ‘June just rains and never stops, Thirty days and spoils the crops.’ Brian Brown

Community Support Team launched North East Derbyshire District Council has set up a Community Support Team to help provide advice and support to those affected by the Covid-19 virus. The Council is inviting residents who are self-isolating and in need of assistance, to register with the Support Team. This will help us to direct resources to the most vulnerable in the District. Once registered, we can co-ordinate and target support and help you access the services available. Our staff will also be able to provide a friendly voice on the phone, giving you someone to turn to if you need reassurance. We are working with other organisations and community groups across the District, including Parish and Town Councils and will be able to signpost residents to the wider help. The new self-isolating online form is available on the website at
www.ne-derbyshire.gov.uk by calling 01246 231111 and by text service number 07800002425.
Leader of the Council, Martin Thacker, MBE said: “As an Authority we are doing everything we possibly can to help our residents when they need us most. The Community Support Team is about getting help to the people who most need it and making sure they have access to the wider network of help available. We want our residents to feel they have somewhere to turn in their hour of need and our Council can provide that facility for the residents we serve. Our essential services are continuing to meet our residents and business needs, however, we will be re-directing resources to the new emerging needs of the community. We want our message of help shared far and wide so our District knows they can contact a trusted source to offer a helping hand. This is just the first of many steps we are making to keep our residents safe and protected, giving them reassurance that we are doing everything we can to help.�
