CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL ADVICE Derbyshire County Council are working closely with their NHS colleagues, and other local authorities to ensure that the people of Derbyshire are kept well informed. You’ll find lots of information around the virus, how to prevent its spread and what to do if you’re concerned that you might be at risk. If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days then contact NHS 111. If you live with others and you have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill. If any other members of the household develop symptoms within that 14 day period then they must self-isolate for 7 days from the point they displayed symptoms. This may mean they need to selfisolate for longer than 14 days For example if they develop symptoms on day 13 they will need to self-isolate for a total of 20 days. The person who first displayed symptoms in the household can stop self-isolating after 7 days. Links to Government and NHS advice on Coronavirus and self isolation are available on the county council’s website.

PLANNING MATTERS Parish Council Comment on Applications 20/00134/DISCON : Mr. & Mrs. Henderson – 34 Main Road, Holmesfield – Application to discharge conditions 19 (Lighting Design) and 20 (Enhancement strategy for nesting birds) pursuant of 18/00373/FL (Expiry Date 21 April 2020). NO COMMENT 20/00288/AMEND : Ms. K. Corker – Cowley Hall Farm, Cowley Lane, Holmesfield - Non-material amendment to planning application 17/01232/ FL to lower a section of the Ground Floor area to the general floor level and to alter openings (Approved). NO COMMENT 20/00356/FL : Mr. & Mrs. Garnett – Dale View, Castle Hill, Holmesfield – Demolition of existing bungalow and construction of a new four-bedroom bungalow (21 days from 4 May 2020). OBJECTION It was resolved to object to the planning application. Although Councillors are pleased that the inaccurate description of the proposal has been changed from new 4 bedroom bungalow to 4 bedroom dwelling; there are concerns that the proposed two storey house is totally out of scale, and will affect the two adjacent single storey bungalows with rights of light and general massing of the site. 20/00393/FL : Mr. Clay – The Bungalow, Park Farm, Park Avenue, Holmesfield – Redevelopment of Green Belt site to form three dwelling houses with associated landscaped private amenity space and parking (Adjacent Conservation Area) (Affecting Public Right of Way (21 days from 4 June 2020) OBJECTION It was resolved to object to the planning application. The Proposed scheme is quite different from the approved single storey three bungalows as the proposal is now for houses with basements. Councillors still strongly feel that the modern design is not in keeping with other properties within the greenbelt and immediately adjacent to the village conservation area. 20/00412/FLH : Mr. R. Atkinson – Cartref, Cordwell Lane, Millthorpe – Application for new extension over existing garage to side and new two storey extension to rear (21 days from 10 June 2020). NO COMMENT NP/NED/0420/0306 : Miss C. Lowe – Unthank Hall Farm, Livery Yard, Unthank Lane, Unthank – Erection of Hobbit House (28 days from 16 June 2020). NO COMMENT

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield, S18 7WB (Tel: 2890686) for more details. CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT HELPLINE Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust recognises the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic is taking on our communities and the impact that the pandemic is having on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of people in Derbyshire. It has launched a new telephone-based support line for local people of all ages and their carers who are experiencing increased distress or anxiety during the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The new service also intends to support people who are experiencing a reduction in their usual mental health care services, as a result of changes that have been made to support the pandemic. The support line, which will initially be available between the hours of 9am – midnight every day of the week can be contacted on 0300 790 0596. For more information about the support line and wider information about our services at this time, please visit the Trust’s website: www.derbyshirehealthcareft.nhs.uk/coronavirus

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION It is hoped that the Holmesfield Gardening Association programme can restart in September when Mr Carl Leaman of Millthorpe Nursery will give a talk in Holmesfield Village Hall on 2nd of September entitled, “Putting The Garden to Bed“. Because of the Covid-19 prevention rules, chairs in the hall will be set out to be socially distanced. This will mean it can accommodate 21 people. As space will be limited, please ring our programmes organiser – Hilary Olson – on 0114 2890927 to book your place. The committee felt that the Annual Show should be cancelled as social distancing would be a problem, so unfortunately – as with so many things – it has been cancelled. The coach Trip to Doddington Hall is now full as the Coach can only take half the number of people due social distancing and of course masks should be worn. However, although the Hall is open there is still the possibility of changing circumstances so please check with our organiser nearer the time. Hilary is doing her best to reorganise some of our cancelled events, so watch this space.

HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP DOVEDALE WALK On Wednesday 19th August Robin Greetham will lead a walk from Bank Top Farm near Hartington. We will go to Pilsbury Castle then Harris Close, returning via the outskirts of the village. Lunch (optional) will be at the farm. The cost of the lunch is £20.50 and will be a roast, choice of sweet and tea or coffee. The walk is approx. 5 miles long but a short cut is available. In these uncertain times please check with Robin that the walk is going ahead. The cost of the walk is £4 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church maintenance fund. If you would like to come just turn up on the day. Please phone Robin on 01246 412767 if you have any queries.

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE Lockdown has eased almost completely in the month of July for many, with lots of businesses starting to re-mobilise after months of closure. As a community, we are probably all very thankful to see the Angel, the Rutland, the Royal Oak and more recently the George & Dragon opening their doors to welcome us all back. It was with regret that the Holmesfield Local Market had to call off the July 4th event, and the team are currently reviewing the balance of year markets and how they can be run whilst at the same time ensuring social distancing guidelines are in place. The feedback from the market stall holders and local businesses is they are very keen to get back to Holmesfield to offer their products. The big Holmesfield community activity in July was the Scarecrow Competition – and what a success it was. There were over 50 entries and the standard was amazing – there are some exceptionally talented people in this neighbourhood! There are many people we must thank for making the competition such a great success and a true community event. A special note of thanks goes to Diane Fearnehough who during lockdown sold tomato plants to many in the village. Diane donated the funds raised, a total of £150.19 to be used for activities that supported the group or village. We were able to purchase prizes for all the categories and children as well as a Scarecrow Trophy which was presented to the overall winner. The children of the village did an outstanding job of brightening the village with their contributions. Thanks to Evie, Maisie, Rose, Heath, William, Jessica, James, Aoife, Tillie, Barney, Edward, Tommy, Daniel, Hannah, Maddie, Mila, Charlie, Evie, Ciara and Amy. We had all sorts of great characters including Tom & Jerry, a Minion, Peter Rabbit to name but a few. The winning children’s entry was won by Tillie and Barney for their Humpty Dumpty entry which used some great creative license after their parents’ garden wall was destroyed by a driver wiping it out by missing the bend! The winners were: Historical Character: Robert Murray Gilchrist Funniest: A cricket day out My Life in Lockdown: The Covid Angel Best Kids: Humpty Dumpty Best Local Business: Mrs Timperley 25

The overall winner was the Covid Angel which is featured on the front cover of the magazine – congratulations and well done, Helen Wilkinson! Other mentions must go to Carl & Kirste Farell – for creating and putting up all the posters (and taking them down again!) The judges – for their time: Helen Pearson, Terry, Christine and Andy. To the amazing Helen Geary who stepped in at last minute to do the Sunday afternoon prize presentation – and what a wonderful job she did! The Holmesfield Support Network continue to offer services such as pharmacy collection and weekly shopping to those in need, but as we said in the last update, these are becoming less and less. We are aware that there are some people still shielding in the community and continue to offer support to those who need it. Have a good August. Take care of yourselves. Aoife and all the Holmesfield Support Network Volunteers.

DOOR TO DOOR FISH SALES Derbyshire Trading Standards are warning consumers about itinerant traders calling at the door to sell fresh/frozen fish. This follows complaints recently from consumers in Dronfield and Chesterfield who paid high prices for large quantities of fish that turned out to be off. These complaints have come in since lockdown restrictions have started to be lifted and suggests rogue fish-sellers are back doing the rounds. Typically these traders will try to sell customers a large quantity of poor quality fish at a high price. They are known to travel nationally, cold-calling consumers’ homes selling fish which is often misdescribed, mislabelled or unlabelled, overpriced and sometimes underweight. They usually travel in transit-type vans which may not be refrigerated. If you are tempted to buy, consider the following; Is the fish labelled with a description, weight marked, a ‘price per kilo’ and a selling price, as required by law? Is the van refrigerated - how can you be sure how fresh the fish really is? Is the van marked with the trader’s details? Does the trader have a price list of products? If you are at all uncertain, ask for a price list and say you will think about it and telephone if you want to place an order. Any reasonable trader will be happy to do this if it leads to regular custom. Trading standards always advise consumers not to deal with traders who cold-call. If you wish to report such an issue you can call Citizen’s Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 2231133. 27

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB 2020 Well finally the cricket season has got underway! After sixteen weeks of lockdown the government announced that cricket could restart from 11th July. Both senior and junior cricket is now underway with both teams getting off to winning starts, as I write they have both won their opening 3 matches. The seniors first fixture was against Chesterfield at Queens Park, a ground that regularly hosts Derbyshire, a great place to start any season, yet alone this one. Chesterfield batted first and scored 176 for 6, Mayank Sharma claiming 4-25 of 10 overs. Holmesfield reached the target with 3 overs to go scoring 181 with Mayank yet again doing the business scoring 64 with good support from Joe Poste who chipped in with a quick 40. Match 2 saw us welcoming Darley Dale for our first home game with the visitors winning the toss and electing to field. Our impressive batting form continued seeing us gallop to an impressive 264-8 off the allotted 40 overs, this time Will Helliwell taking the limelight with a very impressive 105 including 16 fours and 3 sixes. Support coming yet again from Joe Poste with 45. Darley Dale replied with 209-7 and were never really up with the clock as they steadily lost wickets, eventually batting out for a losing draw – Yes you can be thoroughly beaten in a league game and still get some form of a draw! Life’s too short to explain the vagaries’ of the scoring system (there’s 23 different results possible!) we just say we have won or lost. The match saw the debut of one of our up and coming of Juniors, Freddie Tarraporewalla, who plays with our U13’s. Freddie got off to a dream start taking 2-39 off 6 overs – Great Start Freddie! Match 3 saw us away at Clowne Town who were the early league leaders, yet again the Vill’s early batting form came to the fore scoring 245-4 off the 40 overs – Mayank Sharma 98, Will Helliwell 54 off 49 deliveries. Yet again the opposition soon fell well behind the scoring rate eventually reaching 154-9. This leaves us setting the pace after three games with 60 points closely followed by nearby rivals Hundall on 53. 33

Ground Maintenance: The ground is in fantastic condition and ready for the start of cricket, thanks must go to Jimmy and a few regular helpers - Nick & Mark Crapper and David Ward just to mention a few. The pavilion has been totally redecorated, cleaned and tidied and should remain that way as we are not intending to use it at present due to the Covid restrictions. Once again thanks to all the ladies who have spent many hours painting walls, cleaning and rehanging pictures etc – It looks fantastic and is much appreciated! COVID19 - Its Cricket but not as we know it!: Going forward we will have to impose a number of restrictions on the use of the ground on match days. Documentation and signage will be on site informing everyone of the changes/restrictions, but the main points are as follows: General: • The pavilion will be closed to players and spectators with only authorised club members allowed in the tearoom. • Cars should be parked within the ground, where possible, within the allotted area. • Toilets will be available and should be used in accordance with the guidance on site. • Social distancing rules should be observed at all times where practical. • Players & spectator should bring their own chairs to sit on Players: • Players should come changed and ready to play. No changing facilities will be available. • Cricket teas and drinks will not be available, players should bring their own. • In case of poor weather players will only be able to shelter in their own vehicles.

100 Club: In the last newsletter we reported we had sold 153 numbers – we are now up to 182! As a number of the new entrants missed the first draw, we have decided to add an additional one at the end of the season, details to be announced. The draw for June has been made and this month winner is number 123 – Ron Barton, ex player and regular supporter. Well done Ron! 35

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB 2020 Junior Cricket: After the unavoidable cancellation of the 2020 season, HCC were overjoyed to see the return of junior cricket to Holmesfield at the beginning of July. There is a great atmosphere down at the ground and fantastic attitudes from the players and coaches, who have all adapted brilliantly to the social distancing measures and procedures. The pitch looks fantastic and it is wonderful for everyone to be back together playing and enjoying cricket. Our U11s and U13s teams have all made a superb return to playing matches. They have enjoyed matches against great teams from across North Derbyshire. There has been some brilliant bowling, great batting and relentless fielding and it has been wonderful to watch the players develop their cricket skills and teamwork over the last few weeks. A huge thank you to everyone that has volunteered in so many different ways to ensure a smooth return to cricket and thank you to all our cricketers who have made us all very proud! Scarecrow Competition: Thanks to those who came and helped with making what can best be described as “interesting” scarecrows. It quickly became apparent that none of us had made them before but everybody soldiered on and really enjoyed putting this motley crew together. I must say that Joe Root has not wintered well, lets hope he gets himself back in shape for the coming Test matches!

JUNE 2020 WEATHER Well we did not experience a ‘Flaming June’. We rarely do and this year, June was a very average mid-summer month. The average temperature was exactly normal, but we did have some nice warm days. The highest temperature was 28.5°C (83°F) on the 24th June. I recorded 226 hours of bright sunshine, which sounds like quite a lot, but we were spoilt by having 304 hours in May. We enjoyed an extremely dry spring this year but June did not continue this spell. The rainfall in June was slightly higher than normal. However, a friend who lives in Bradway had rather less rain than we did, so Holmesfield probably caught a heavy shower that missed Bradway. Our heaviest rainfall was on the 18th June when almost one inch of rain fell. I used the term ‘Flaming June’ assuming that the term refers to the weather that we might expect in June. However, it seems that the term was first used as the title of an oil painting produced by Sir Frederic Leighton in 1895. His painting shows a women dressed in bright orange and sleeping on her side. Her languid appearance does perhaps bring to mind the warmth of a lazy summer evening. The painting is displayed in a museum in Puerto Rico. I am writing this note just a few days into July and the mixed weather seems to be continuing. The large high pressure zone that gave us all the sunshine during the first weeks of lockdown has certainly gone but the current forecast does suggest that we might get some more summer sunshine later in July. As you read this note you will know if this forecast was correct. Brian Brown

DERBYSHIRE LIBRARY SERVICE All 45 Derbyshire libraries, the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery and the Derbyshire Record Office in Matlock are closed to protect staff and customers using the services from the risk of coronavirus and to help to prevent its spread. The two mobile libraries have also been taken off the road for the foreseeable future. A date has not been set for the services to reopen but it is estimated they could remain closed for at least 12 weeks. Library customers who have borrowed items from their library are being advised to hold on to them until they can return them when their local service re-opens. All fines will be waived. There’s a wealth of books, newspapers and magazines available online from Derbyshire Libraries and customers can find out how to access these and other information by registering using their library card, if they haven’t already signed up. People can also still access online information and resources from the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery and the Derbyshire Record Office. Derbyshire County Council Leader Councillor Barry Lewis said: “We appreciate that libraries are regarded as a valuable community resource and we are sorry to have to take this significant action but we trust residents will understand that we have had to make this difficult decision to protect the health and well-being of residents, communities and staff.

HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made.
