CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL ADVICE Derbyshire County Council are working closely with their NHS colleagues, and other local authorities to ensure that the people of Derbyshire are kept well informed. You’ll find lots of information around the virus, how to prevent its spread and what to do if you’re concerned that you might be at risk. If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days then contact NHS 111. If you live with others and you have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill. If any other members of the household develop symptoms within that 14 day period then they must self-isolate for 7 days from the point they displayed symptoms. This may mean they need to selfisolate for longer than 14 days For example if they develop symptoms on day 13 they will need to self-isolate for a total of 20 days. The person who first displayed symptoms in the household can stop self-isolating after 7 days. Links to Government and NHS advice on Coronavirus and self isolation are available on the county council’s website.

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield, S18 7WB (Tel: 2890686) for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT HELPLINE Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust recognises the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic is taking on our communities and the impact that the pandemic is having on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of people in Derbyshire. It has launched a new telephone-based support line for local people of all ages and their carers who are experiencing increased distress or anxiety during the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The support line, which will initially be available between the hours of 9am – midnight every day of the week can be contacted on 0300 790 0596. For more information about the support line and wider information about our services at this time, please visit the Trust’s website: www.derbyshirehealthcareft.nhs.uk/coronavirus

FEEL CONFIDENT WITH A DERBYSHIRE TRUSTED TRADER Finding a company that you can trust to do some work for you can be a bit daunting – how can you be sure that you won’t get ripped off? What if things go wrong? How do you choose between lots of different companies? These sorts of dilemmas were a driving force behind the setting up by Derbyshire County Council of the Trusted Trader scheme to help local people find traders and businesses that do a good job at a fair price and provide good customer service. That was back in 2008 and the popular scheme has gone from strength to strength. These days there are nearly 17,000 searches each month on the Trusted Trader website, www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt by people looking for reliable companies to use. Another ringing endorsement for the scheme was a recent survey which gathered feedback from more than 16,000 people who had used a Trusted Trader and an impressive 94% said they were very satisfied with the service they received. So people can have lots of confidence when employing one of the 1,200 traders who are part of the scheme. In the very unlikely event of someone having a problem with one of the traders then help is at hand. Derbyshire County Council trading standards officers can get involved in any queries involving Trusted Traders and seek to resolve them The scheme particularly helps to protect older and vulnerable adults by making it easier for them to use Trusted Traders rather than rogue traders who typically cold-call and use high pressure sales techniques. A recent development has been the inclusion of Financial Advisors who specialise in providing financial advice for people in later life and can help with matters like care fees, pensions and investments. Find out more about all aspects of Trusted Trader at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/tt or call 01629 536148. Enquiries are also welcome from businesses interested in signing up to the scheme – membership brings lots of benefits. 19

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE

4,095,203

This is the number of people that are reporting every day to the COVID Sympton Study. It’s so simple to download this app and report each day – it takes about 2 minutes to report and they remind you via a text if you haven’t. Each week there is plenty of information about where there are cases and some of the learnings from the study. The study also sends out requests asking people to be tested so that they can do spot checks in the community. The tests can be done from home and can be posted back. Results arrive via text within 48 hours. The app shares up to date information including the current ‘hot spots’ in the UK and it is good to see Holmesfield is nowhere to be seen!

We would encourage as many of you in the village to download the app, report daily and support this study. To find out more please visit : www.covid.joinzoe.com There are currently only 1287 contributors from North East Derbyshire to the study and there needs to be a lot more. This is not a track and trace app, your data is protected and you will be helping the NHS and Kings College London university learn more about this virus. 25

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE A few other announcements. Our local pubs have some great initiatives happening this month, please try to support them. It’s all happening at the Rutland Arms on Bank Holiday Monday where Gary & Lucie will be hosting a Tractor Fest – a local gathering of vintage tractors and farm vehicles. It will be a great event and a nice opportunity to catch up outside with friends. Some of you have probably been back to the Angel Inn, but Mal & Mandy are also continuing to do take away fish & chips which can be ordered by phone any night. Monday – Wednesdays have been busy thanks to the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, but there is lots of availability at the weekend so please book in. The George & Dragon has been renovated and Emily is back behind the bar to welcome you all. Finally, thank you to Andrea and Adam... the bread continues to be delivered at their home on The Crescent – please do pick it up as this is helping reducing Sainsbury’s waste as all of the product is in date! The group WhatsApp is active as a community communication tool, as is our facebook page. Who knows what the next couple of months will bring, so we will keep offering pharmacy runs, bread and ad hoc community support. You know where we are. Aoife & the Holmesfield Support Network

GARDEN FURNITURE THEFTS It is a sad sign of the times that North East Derbyshire is presently experiencing a surge in thefts of garden furniture. Numerous cases have been reported in Holmesfield, Barlow, Cutthorpe, Dronfield Woodhouse and further afield. A white Ford Transit type van or similar with seemingly fake number plates appears to be a common occurrence judging by CCTV pictures where thefts have been recorded - usually very early in the morning. Pubs, cafes and private residences have been targeted. Residents are urged to remain vigilant. Security measures such as trackers and bar codes are available. HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB 2020 After winning the first 3 fixtures post-lockdown, match 4 unfortunately saw us come down to earth with a bump! Batting first, things looked fine, reaching 42 before Mayank was out for 16. This unfortunately was only the start with wickets tumbling quickly to 52-5 (including three ducks) then 73-7. The rot was stopped thanks to some good batting from Russ Parker and Nick Crapper who added 48, Holmesfield eventually being all out for 142. Was it enough, was it a difficult wicket? The answer came very quickly with the first over going for 6 and the second for 17, three consecutive maiden overs then offered some hope but this soon faded as Ashover’s opening bat, Russell Cooke, started bludgeoning the ball to all parts of the ground not to mention the adjacent fields! Eventually the game was over with Ashover knocking the runs off in only 23 overs, Mr Cooke finishing with exactly 100, knocking the last ball for six. Definitely a game to forget. As far as the league is concerned this still leaves us setting the pace after four games with 63 points closely followed by Clowne on 61 and Hundall on 60. National Village Cup: The following day saw us hosting Rolleston CC in the National Village Cup. Rolleston currently play in the same league as ourselves but several divisions higher, currently sitting top of Division 1 South and undefeated to date. For some reason the Village knockout always seems to bring the best out of us often beating teams much stronger than ourselves, Sunday being no exception. Rolleston batted first and lost their star batsman in the first over to a fantastic ball from Mayank. According to him it swung this way and that, seamed off the pitch and bowled him middle stump – he missed it! Good tight bowling backed up with some excellent fielding kept the opposition down to 167. We got off to a solid start with runs coming quickly, Mark Crapper and Mayank opening, both out for 18 each. Dan Holmes (41) and Zac Dann (46) then picked up the gauntlet smashing the ball to all parts, Holmesfield eventually reaching the required total with 6 wickets to spare and 20 overs remaining. Great Performance. The next round on Sunday 9th August saw the Vill play South Wingfield and a thrilling game saw Holmesfield win by 1 run to be Derbyshire’s representative in the next round. Batting first, the Vill endured a dodgy start before the 33

middle order started motoring with Joe Poste and Jimmy Pearson scoring 58 and 86 respectively as a final score of 259-9 off their 40 overs was achieved. Tight bowling did just enough to stifle the visitors despite a creditable ton by one of the opening batsmen. Saturday 15th August saw a forgettable performance as visitors Chesterfield skittled Holmesfield for just 86 runs with only the opening batters managing to reach double figures. Chesterfield cruised to win by 10 wickets. Still reeling, Holmesfield had to travel to Dumbleton in Gloucestershire for the next round of the National Village Cup the following day. The bowlers restricted the hosts to just 127 runs but another batting collapse saw Holmesfield all out for another low score as the Vill could only muster 73 runs and the West Country side progressed to the next round, winning by 54 runs. Junior Cricket: After the unavoidable cancellation of the 2020 season, HCC were overjoyed to see the return of junior cricket to Holmesfield at the beginning of July. There is a great atmosphere down at the ground and fantastic attitudes from the players and coaches, who have all adapted brilliantly to the social distancing measures and procedures. The ground looks fantastic and it is wonderful for everyone to be back together playing and enjoying cricket. Our U11s and U13s teams have all made a superb return, playing matches against teams from across North Derbyshire. There has been some brilliant bowling, great batting and relentless fielding. It has been wonderful to watch the players develop their cricket skills and teamwork over the last few weeks. A huge thank you to everyone that has volunteered in so many different ways to ensure a smooth return to cricket and thank you to all our cricketers who have made us all very proud!

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB 2020 Ladies Cricket Team: We are looking to run a ladies team for next season. The team will play the ‘softball’ version of cricket with 8 players per team. In order to get things started we arranged a couple of training sessions on 10th and 11th August followed by a couple of games at Matlock on Sunday 16th August. It was a superb performance from the HCC ladies team on their 1) debut for Homesfield and 2) debut on ever playing a cricket match! A great match against Chesterfield saw Holmesfield Ladies winning 173-132. A nail biting match against Matlock came down to the last few balls but ultimately saw Holmesfield lose 134-132. A superb finish! HCC are so proud of you all - well done! Thanks to Matlock for hosting and such a wonderful welcome.

We already have a number of interested players, the more the merrier. If you fancy joining in, please contact Tony Brown – tonynigelbrown@gmail.com 100 Club: The draw for July has been made and this month’s winner is number 145 – Dr. David Ward. David has supported the club for many years, occasionally turning his arm over in a midweek match and playing against us for the Vicar’s XI in the annual match. Well done David.! Scarecrow Competition: We Won! Thanks to all those that took part, great to get the first trophy in the bag! Same again next year? 37

JULY 2020 WEATHER At the end of my notes on the June weather I remarked that the rather mixed weather of June appeared to be continuing into July. I wrote that the current forecast suggests that we might get some more summer sunshine later in July. That forecast was certainly wrong, unless you count the very last day of the month. 31st July was the hottest day of the year so far, with a maximum of 37.8°C recorded at Heathrow Airport. Heathrow often seems to record the highest temperature, but perhaps that is the result of the enormous areas of concrete around the airport. I recorded a maximum of 32°C (90°F) on that day in Holmesfield. It was certainly the hottest day of our year so far, but it was simply a stunning blip that followed a considerably cooler July than normal. The average temperature was 14.4°C, almost two degrees below what July should be. The month was also slightly wetter than usual. We had some rain on 18 days of the month and the 8th and 9th were very wet indeed, with almost two inches of rain. So July was not a month ‘to write home about’ in terms of the weather. The sun did shine from time to time, I even remember looking at the sundial at the back of our house on some occasions. I mused that the roman numerals on the sundial are marked clockwise around the dial, because the sun moves clockwise – left to right - in the northern hemisphere. In Australia the sundials are marked in an anticlockwise direction because the sun moves from right to left during the day. I do wonder how the believers in a ‘Flat Earth’ are able to explain such differences between the northern and southern hemispheres. I smiled a little time ago on reading a letter that said “One dark night in Camden Town I saw a van parked in the street. Painted on the side of the van was the message ‘Flat Earth Society. Expedition to the Edge’. I never saw it again...” Brian Brown

Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October. For further information, those who may be eligible should contact the Clerk to the Charity, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield S18 7WB (Tel: 2890686).

ALL DOG OWNERS Dog fouling issues are the worst they have ever been in Holmesfield. Most people take poo bags out with then and remove it, but others give all dog owners a bad name by leaving it. The irresponsible ones do not use poo bags, they go out under the cover of darkness and think picking it up does not apply to them. Some go out in broad daylight and leave a mess on footpaths used by the children on their way to school. 45

Holmesfield Bygones

Exterior photographs of old public houses, inns, hotels and beer houses are very common. Not so common are photographs of their interiors so we are grateful to Mandy Drewery for sharing this very evocative image of the interior of the Peacock Hotel at Owler Bar. Though undated it is thought to have been taken c.1920. Looking more like the sitting room of a private country residence, the Peacock is instantly identifiable by the shape of the windows, the abundance of ashtrays giving clues to its use by the public - possibly as a private residents’ lounge.
