PARISH COUNCIL MEETING We are sorry that we had to cancel the December meeting of the Parish Council due to government guidance. If possible, the next meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 13th January 2021 in the Main Hall at Holmesfield Village Hall.

WORKING ON THE CENSUS If you’re a people person, have great customer service skills and want to be part of something that affects all of us, then consider applying for a job with the census. For Census 2021, we’ll be hiring at least 30,000 field staff across England and Wales. As it gets closer, we’ll be advertising the opportunities online. It takes a big team to ensure the census runs smoothly. Our field team is vital to our success. As part of our field team, you would be the face of the census – visiting people who have not yet responded, offering help and encouraging people to take part. It’s an essential part of making sure we get the responses we need to make the census the best it can be. www.census.gov.uk/jobs

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL Holmesfield Village Hall will be open for hire once we have been moved out of Tier 3. We are looking forward to welcoming all hirers and visitors back to the hall sometime in 2021. Hire Details – email holmesfieldvillagehall@outlook.com or tel. : 0775 2478866

HOLMESFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Last month we reported that our Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator, Alison Smith, had decided to step down. After a period of increased suspicious and criminal activity it was hoped that someone would step forward to take on this important role within the village community. Please contact Alison on 0114 2890230 if you wish to volunteer.

GREEN HOMES GRANT Derbyshire Trading Standards wishes to notify residents of the Government initiative – the Green Homes Grant – a voucher which enables households to fund certain energy improvements to their house. Briefly, the procedure requires the householder to firstly apply for a voucher and then obtain quotes from certified contractors, including one from a Green Homes Grant registered installer. Full details about the scheme, whether you’re eligible and how to apply: www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-the-green-homes-grant-scheme#getting-the-work-done If your application is successful, the work must then be completed by a TrustMarkregistered installer who is also registered for the scheme. Derbyshire Trading Standards has heard about some companies visiting door-todoor offering home improvement work and claiming the grant may be available to pay for the work carried out. These claims may be misleading because if they’re not registered, and if you’ve not applied for the voucher beforehand, you may end up paying the entire bill. The Green Homes Grant scheme will never include representatives coming to your property uninvited or cold calling on the phone to encourage you to join the scheme. If any home improvement business calls unannounced saying they are part of the scheme, please report the incident to Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133. Derbyshire Trading Standards Service advise householders to never deal with businesses who cold-call. 7

SOME USEFUL EMERGENCY INFORMATION 1. Did you know you can text the emergency services? You have to register your phone number in advance. Send a one word text to 999 ‘register’ and confirm when you get a reply. Useful if you are somewhere where there is only 1 bar phone signal and phone calls will not work. To use it text the word Police, Fire or Ambulance with details of the emergency. www.emergencysms.net 2. If you are not close to a road then an ambulance will not be what you need. Call the police and say you need mountain rescue. 3. There are a couple of phone apps that are useful. A). What 3 Words gives a 3 metre square location that emergency services will recognise so they can find you. what3words.com (also available as a smartphone app) B). GoodSam Alerter gives the location of defibrillators. You can use it to call the emergency services and if there is a volunteer first aider nearby they will also attend. Emergency services can also use your phones camera to see the nature of the emergency and provide advice. It can also take a couple of readings from the patient too. www.goodsamapp.org/regAlerter 9

A NEW YEAR MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR OF HOLMESFIELD Hello and Happy New Year! Ok, I think most of us can agree that we’re pretty glad to see the back of 2020. Sadly Covid pays little attention to the Gregorian calendar and continues to wreak havoc into 2021. But if Covid is not going to respect our seasons and special moments, then this year is surely time to get our own back. Traditions and customs where we gather with one another to celebrate or commiserate one another are critical to us as human beings. So we must find ways this year to make special moments happen, even if they are a bit out of sync with the calendar. So yes, celebrate Christmas at Easter or in the summer. If the Aussies can have a Christmas barbeque, then so can we! Wait for a safer time and celebrate that birthday, anniversary or wedding. If the Queen can have two birthdays – why not you?! And why not hold a Celebration of Life service or gathering with friends and family to remember someone who’s passing was not marked as it should have been at their funeral. One good thing 2020 has shown us is that even though separate physically we can still work brilliantly together for the common good. Covid says stay apart; but a greater force says nothing will be impossible for you if you love and care for one another. In 2020, metaphorically speaking, we moved mountains because we’ve realised that we must preserve life and look out for one another. We’ve remembered that this is a better way and a higher ideal than simply looking out for ourselves and making ourselves richer, accumulating more stuff. In 2021, let us build on what we have learned and continue to put others first – this is the surest way to a happy new year. God bless you all, Rev. Ian. PS. Do join St. Swithin’s new Facebook group to be kept up-to-date with what’s going on at church and search “Dronfield with Holmesfield” on YouTube to see our online services and other content... 13

HOLMESFIELD FOOTPATHS AND BRIDLEWAYS SOCIETY The Holmesfield Footpaths and Bridleways Society is currently engaged in the production of a new guide to the public rights of way in the parish, which extends from the boundary with Dronfield Woodhouse, over Totley Moss, to the fringes of Fox House on the road to Hathersage. Our parish is the second largest in Derbyshire and appeals to the wide interests of walkers, equestrians and cyclists. Surprisingly, we know people from as far away as Norfolk, Walsall and South Lancashire have visited our parish, sometimes as part of a Peak National Park tour. All the descriptions of the rights of way, of which there are 62 have been brought up to date and the material, including photographs where appropriate, will be assembled and printed by MENSA in Sheffield. The assembly of all the content of the new guide has been a considerable task, and it is hoped that the book will be available for sale in early 2021, subject to any mandatory restrictions which cannot be foreseen. This may be an opportunity to join the Society, which incurs a modest annual contribution of £3.00 for a couple or £2.00 for a single person. If you are interested in joining us, please contact the Honorary Treasurer – Mr David Burgan - on 0114 2359987. Roger Webb

Sorry, there isn’t a walk in January. If you would like to come just turn up on the day but check with Robin before hand to make sure the walk is still going ahead as these are very uncertain times. MOBILE LIBRARY The county’s mobile library service has started operating again on a 4-weekly cycle and will be on a `book and borrow’ system,. This means customers will need to phone to book an appointment and will be able to pick up a maximum of 10 books. Appointment times will last 5 minutes, and for the time being, people will not be able to select their own books by going onto the vehicle. Instead, they will be asked what type of books they like reading and a selection will be made for them so they can pick them up at their allotted time. New safety measures include books which are returned being quarantined for 72 hours and customers being asked to bring their own bags to pick up their books. Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture and Tourism Councillor Barry Lewis said: “We’ve been working incredibly hard to get services which had to stop due to coronavirus back up and running, ensuring they are safe for our staff and customers. After making some necessary changes to how the service will operate for now, I’m pleased we are in a position where we can re-start this service and reach as many people as possible who I’m sure have missed their regular visits from the mobiles.” To book an appointment, customers should ring 01629 533464. The mobile library will be at 6 Park Rise, Holmesfield between 10.00 and 10.30am (note new times) on Mondays 25th January & 22nd February. 21

FOOD VOUCHERS FOR CHILDREN IN DERBYSHIRE Derbyshire County Council will provide £30 food vouchers over the Christmas period to families of children who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals. In addition they have extended the food voucher scheme to families of pre-school children, aged 2 to 4 years, who are suffering financial hardship and also young people leaving local authority care. The funding will help to provide food and other household essentials to 26,000 Derbyshire children during the Christmas holidays. The Council have received almost £2.2m from the government’s COVID Winter Grant Scheme to support vulnerable families with food and fuel costs over the winter months. The electronic food vouchers – which will be sent to parents for each eligible child by email or text message from 15 December – are part of a raft of measures to support local people most in need during the ongoing pandemic. In addition to the food vouchers, around £180,000 of the grant will be allocated to help households and individuals who find themselves in financial crisis over the winter. The funding is over and above the money we already provide to support food banks and other schemes that work to alleviate poverty in local communities. Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Young People, Councillor Alex Dale said: “Winter can be hard and there’s no doubt this year will be even more difficult than usual for many people. “We very much welcome this extra government money which will help to ease the pressure on families who are the most in need this Christmas. We’ve made it as simple as possible for families to receive their food vouchers by sending them direct to the mobile phone numbers or email addresses eligible parents have already supplied to their child’s school, or to the council during an application for free child care. This means the vast majority of families will receive their vouchers automatically from us in time for Christmas.’ Councillor Dale added that if people don’t have children who are eligible for food vouchers but are struggling financially, he would urge them to visit our website where we’ve pulled together a list of the many places people can get help. The second part of the government’s grant will help to fund food vouchers for the February half term although the exact amount each child receives will depend on the number of eligible families at that time. Full details of the criteria for food vouchers and information about how they will be sent out are at the following website:www.derbyshire.gov.uk/community/lottery-funding/covid-19-winter-grants/ food-vouchers/food-vouchers-for-children-in-derbyshire.aspx 25

DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL COVID-19 ADVICE Derbyshire County Council are working closely with their NHS colleagues, and other local authorities to ensure that the people of Derbyshire are kept well informed. You’ll find lots of information around the virus, how to prevent its spread and what to do if you’re concerned that you might be at risk. If you live alone and you have symptoms of coronavirus illness (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home for 7 days from when your symptoms started. If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days then contact NHS 111. If you live with others and you have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill. If any other members of the household develop symptoms within that 14 day period then they must self-isolate for 7 days from the point they displayed symptoms. This may mean they need to self-isolate for longer than 14 days For example if they develop symptoms on day 13 they will need to self-isolate for a total of 20 days. The person who first displayed symptoms in the household can stop self-isolating after 7 days. Links to Government and NHS advice on Coronavirus and self isolation are available on the county council’s website: www.derbyshire.gov.uk/coronavirus (the relevant landing page is pinned to the top of the home page) Please only take advice about Coronavirus from official channels and avoid potentially erroneous and unverifiable advice on social media. www.gov.uk : www.nhs.uk

CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT HELPLINE Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust recognises the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic is taking on our communities and the impact that the pandemic is having on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of people in Derbyshire. It has launched a new telephone-based support line for local people of all ages and their carers who are experiencing increased distress or anxiety during the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The new service also intends to support people who are experiencing a reduction in their usual mental health care services, as a result of changes that have been made to support the pandemic. The support line, which will initially be available between the hours of 9am – midnight every day of the week can be contacted on 0300 790 0596. For more information about the support line and wider information about our services at this time, please visit the Trust’s website: www.derbyshirehealthcareft.nhs.uk/coronavirus 27

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP UPDATE Hmmm... 2020 what can we say! We are sure that most of you are looking forward to seeing the back of this year, but on a positive note, this year has seen the community come together to support each other in lots of ways. From the feedback we have received over the year, there are a lot of people who could not have managed through this year without this group’s support and as a community we should all be proud. The latest Covid-19 updates from Kings College in London had been looking very encouraging for North East Derbyshire. We still remain in Tier 3 but as a result of the latest lockdown, the numbers of cases has reduced dramatically. If you would like to sign up to the reporting app you can do so at covid.joinzoe.com This research group are currently asking schools to get involved with their research. If you are a teacher or parent and want to know more please go to covid. joinzoe.com/schoolnetworks We have also been putting out updates from Chesterfield Royal Hospital who posted on 9th December that they are one of the 50 hospital hubs in the country to offer the vaccine. In terms of priorities, over 80s who will be attending out-patients clinics at the hospital and staff who are more vulnerable to Coronavirus and its effects will be the first to receive the vaccine. They are advising that members of the public DO NOT contact them, they will contact you when it is your turn. This month we have continued to offer the pharmacy runs, bread runs and general support for those who need it. Other Village updates: Bens Centres & the Cathedral Archer Project collections: In December, Mandy and Mal at the Angel organised a collection point for clothing, bedding, shoes etc. These charities support homelessness in Sheffield. Initially, Mandy got a few bags of donations that were popped in to the porch at the Angel, however by the end of the week, the porch was full. Mandy couldn’t get out so St. Vincent’s sent an emergency van to pick up all of the fantastic donations and free Mandy and Mal! The project leaders have asked that we thank the people of Holmesfield for their support. 28

Light up Holmesfield: The Christmas tree in the Millennium Gardens always seems to indicate the start of the festive season, but this year a few of you beat Holmesfield Village Society to it! Some of the first decorations arrived in the village before the end of November! It has been great to see the fantastic decorations and lights that people have put on their houses and in gardens. It really does brighten up the village. Thanks again for your enthusiasm. Christmas Carol Service: What a great way to end the year of village support. When Sarah Webb, the vicar’s wife, asked how many usually turn up to the carol service.. we said ‘Oh usually about 2530’ – we absolutely under estimated it! There are so many people to thank for organising this event but in particular, Carl and Kirste for putting up all the posters, Mandy, Helen and Andrea for their unendless support and Sarah Webb for organising the carols. On the day so many volunteers made the event a success. Will, Liz and Nick Denniff for organising Santa’s transport and David Pearson for the fabulous sleigh sides, to everyone at the school who organised Santa and the elves, to our marshals – Andy, Richard and helpers, our mince pie team- Debbie, Maddie and Amy, to Ian and Sarah who lead the carol singing on the new village mega phone and Christine Taylor for the music from the church tower. In the last year the Holmesfield Local Market team have donated most of the funds that enabled us to run the various events during the year, but with no markets, the funds had begun to dry up. But we want to thank you for supporting the Carol service and the raffle. We have raised over £1500, including the donation from the Shepley’s of £127 that was raised on the warm cider sales. Thank you Shepley family and all of those who donated prizes to the raffle. All of the funds will be used to support village activities in 2021 and this is a fantastic effort from everyone. There isn’t much more to say except stay safe, wash your hands, enjoy the one day of Christmas freedom we have been given and let’s hope for speedy vaccinations for 2021!!! NOVEMBER 2020 WEATHER November was a little warmer and drier than usual but otherwise unremarkable. The highest temperature was 16.3°C on the 1st and the lowest was 1.1°C on the 27th. The average temperature was 7.8°C and the rainfall was 50.9mm, which is only 55% of the normal for November. There was still no air frost but there were a few days of ground frost. There are various definitions of frost. A comprehensive weather station will measure a ground frost by placing a thermometer 5cm above the ground. When zero degrees centigrade is recorded that means there is a ground frost. An air frost is recorded 1.25 metres (about 4ft) above the ground and that is about where my weather station makes the measurement. What most people think of as frost is a hoar frost when the ground looks white in the morning. This usually consists of dew which has frozen so that feathery and needle shaped crystals coat the grass. I don’t remember very much hoar frost appearing this November but some parts of the country certainly did have several frosty mornings. To get a hoar frost you need very still conditions. The ground cools during the night because it is losing heat to the atmosphere by radiation. If there is any wind at all then this will blow the cold ground air away, but if there is no wind the temperature of the air close to the ground can drop below zero. Some of you will remember being taught at school about conduction, convection and radiation of heat. Radiation from the ground is a bit like sunlight in reverse. The sun is hotter than we are and so radiates energy to us during the day. At night the ground is warmer than the heavens – space – and so it radiates heat away and the ground gets colder. The word hoar does not come from somebody’s name. It is thought to come from an Old English word meaning ‘showing signs of old age’ or ‘greyish white hair’ or ‘venerable’, because hoar frost looks like white hair. Brian Brown

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB

New Scorer Required: During the cricket season, HCC’s 1st XI play their league and cup matches on a Saturday afternoon. Following the retirement of our great, long standing scorer Pete Wardley, we are now looking for a new scorer for the matches. Payment is available. Senior Player Recruitment: In preparation for next cricket season, HCC are looking to recruit some additional players for our 2 senior teams in the Derbyshire County League. 1st XI: Our first XI play in Division 3N so players need to be of a standard to compete at this level. 2nd XI: We are entering a 2nd XI senior team into the league for the first time next season so are playing in Division 9N of the Derbyshire County League. Our seniors also play in the Chesterfield midweek league which welcomes players of all levels. We are a friendly, family orientated and competitive club with excellent facilities. We welcome new members to our teams, and the club. Ladies Cricket: Our ladies need not feel left out as ladies team has been entered into the 8 a-side ‘Softball’ league. This is the same format as the games played this year so it will be familiar. This is a step into the unknown for the club but I am sure that the enthusiasm shown this year will see us make a great success of it. Although this is a natural progression for any team, we appreciate that not all people will want to be thrown straight into a competitive league environment so at the same time we will try to arrange ‘Friendly’ fixtures and practice matches against other teams over the coming season. Please spread the word around and let’s boost participation in ladies cricket. Under 15 Players Required: For the first time in many years, we are delighted to be entering a team into the U15 North East Derbyshire league. We are looking to recruit some new players for the U15 team and welcome enthusiastic players of all abilities. Winter net training is planned for Saturdays from February and in season training every Friday evening at the HCC ground. For further information abgvvout any of the above, please contact Jimmy Pearson on 07803288200 jimmypeo@hotmail.com

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB

There were some excellent nominations for Derbyshire Cricket Foundation’s Grassroots Heroes of 2020 and their website highlighted as many people as possible during December. One of the first to be mentioned was Anthony Bolsover from Holmesfield CC. Anthony single-handedly organised cricket training for juniors players at Holmesfield CC within 24 hours of the government giving the ECB the green light to start after the first lockdown. He organised a coach, 4 sessions each night with 5 players in each group for 4 nights a week until matches could be played. Not only did he orgainse the training, but he was also at the ground during every session to make sure that the strict guidelines were being followed by those who attended. Once matches were allowed to be played, he made sure that 30 U13 players all had enough opportunities in a very difficult and shortened season,. Anthony played a massive part in making sure that the club was Covid safe and sticking to all the guidelines throughout the summer. Without him taking on this responsibility, Juniors at the club would not have had anywhere near the amount of cricket that they did. Well done Anthony, great work this year!

DERBYSHIRE PCSO RECRUITMENT STILL OPEN Due to coronavirus, more people are shopping online this year. This means more opportunities for hackers to carry out cyber attacks. They often do this by targeting people and businesses using: Email and website scams • malware (software that can damage your device or let a hacker in • If hackers get into your device or accounts, they could access your money, your personal information, or information about your business. You can improve your cyber security by taking six actions: 1: Use a strong and separate password for your email If a hacker gets into your email, they could reset your other account passwords • access information you have saved about yourself or your business • Your email password should be strong and different to all your other passwords. This will make it harder to crack or guess. 2: Create strong passwords using 3 random words When you use different passwords for your important accounts, it can be hard to remember them all. A good way to create strong, memorable passwords is by using 3 random words. Do not use words that can be guessed (like your pet’s name). You can include numbers and symbols if you need to. For example, “RedPantsTree4!” 3: Save your passwords in your browser Saving your password in your browser means letting your web browser (such as Chrome, Safari or Edge) remember your password for you. This can help: make sure you do not lose or forget your passwords • protect you against some cyber crime, such as fake websites. It is safer than using weak passwords, or using the same password in more than one place. 4: Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) Two-factor authentication (2FA) helps to stop hackers from getting into your accounts, even if they have your password. 5: Update your devices Out-of-date software, apps, and operating systems contain weaknesses. This makes them easier to hack. Companies fix the weaknesses by releasing updates. When you update your devices and software, this helps to keep hackers out. 6: Back up your data Backing up means creating a copy of your information and saving it to another device or to cloud storage (online). Backing up regularly means you will always have a recent version of your information saved. This will help you recover quicker if your data is lost or stolen. For more information, and step-by-step instructions, please visit cyberaware.gov.uk 47

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY IN HOLMESFIELD AND THE CHURCH OF ST. SWITHIN - PART 2 The information in this series has been drawn from the writings of Bessie Bunker in her published works: ‘Holmesfield - The Story of an Ancient Chapelry’ (1963) and ‘All Their Yesterdays’ (1973). It has been Modified in the light of research from current experts. If anyone can provide additional information or evidence it would be greatly appreciated.

Our first stone church would be built in the ‘hall and chamber’ design like the early timber church with the Lord of the Manor or his steward living and holding court in the chamber, the hall being the meeting place for the villagers, much like a community centre! As from the time of the earliest building, the church was used as a meeting place for all community events and the centre for much of the business of the village. Feasts were held here and it was the venue for Parish meetings (usually on Sundays). ‘Manorial Courts’ were held in the chamber. These dealt with the details of agriculture and social responsibility. Justice was administered, usually by a fine, (‘trial by ordeal’ could be carried out in the nave in the very earliest days, prior to 1200s). Inquests were held here and the church was where the decreed number of bows which Holmesfield must provide for a fighting force were kept. (In the reign of Edward IV, every Englishman must have a bow of his own height. Butts for archery practice on feast days had to be erected, arrows often being sharpened on the stones in the church porch!) A school was also held in the chapel and meetings of the villagers were called to discuss disaster, peril, or jollification. The hall became the nave and eventually, the chamber became the chancel. From the earliest times the chamber, or a small room over, was the dwelling of the Lord’s officiating priest. There was a separate room above the nave of the church in which wool and grain were stored. A staircase outside the building entered this ‘over-chanel’). Although there is no evidence of the date at which the first stone church was built, speculation that it was pre-Norman is supported by a description of it by a Mr Rawlins who visited the building in 1821, five years before it was demolished: ‘’The church contained Saxon arches supported by circular piers which separated the nave from the aisle. The altar was at the head of the nave in front of the chancel, which was entered by a plain round arch.” A 1785 painting of the old church by S.H. Grimm shows that there had been alterations, in particular to the chamber. The roof had been raised and a large east window is to be seen, suggesting that the chamber had by this time been converted into a chancel. Whatever the exact date of the new church, the dedication to the memory of St. Swithin seems very appropriate. Next time - Part 3: Norman, Tudor and Stuart Times 49
