Over the past few weeks we have seen an increase of cold caller incidents where they have offered garden or handy man services and we would like to advise people to consider the home security and take on board the following information. Think about a few helpful tips: Check the identity of any caller. Confirm who they are by calling the company they work for using number from the telephone directory or a bill. Ask a neighbour to come around to check them before you open the door. Tell them to come back at a time when someone will be at home with you. Before answering the front door, make sure your back door and any windows are locked and closed. A YOUTH CLUB FOR HOLMESFIELD ? It’s been wonderful seeing so many children and young people around the village during St. Swithin’s festival week. I had an opportunity to talk to some throughout the week and they would like some sort of youth club / hang out zone with activities throughout the year. I am happy to start something up from the church but I really need some volunteers to help me! If you love the idea of volunteering alongside young people and are interested in finding out more about how we can meet their need to meet and have fun in a safe space, join me for a chat over a cuppa at The Vicarage on Vicarage Close at 7.30pm – Monday 6th September. Park in the Village Hall car park. RSVP: Sarah@webbhome.co.uk Sarah Webb

GRANTS TO TACKLE ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster is determined to respond to the neighbourhood issues that cause misery to local people and has committed £100k from her budget to the launch of an Antisocial Behaviour Prevention Grant. Launched during Antisocial Behaviour Awareness Week (July 19-25) in support of projects aiming to prevent problems developing in the first place as well as those that help to reassure residents and make them feel safer. It will also be used to help the Commissioner respond to immediate antisocial behaviour issues identified by the Police and Community Safety Partnerships and develop new grassroots community groups to bring local people together. The funding is one of two schemes being launched by the Commissioner in 2021-22 totalling £200k. The second scheme, due to be unveiled in the next six months, will support projects that aim to improve road safety. Commissioner Angelique Foster said: “Antisocial behaviour has a serious impact on mental wellbeing and health and often leaves victims fearful and anxious. “Our communities in Derbyshire deserve this issue to be treated seriously and for every resource and effort to be spent on addressing persistent problems. I am keen to support projects which not only alleviate problems now but also prevent them from happening in the first place, which is better for those affected by antisocial behaviour and reduces the demand for the police and partners. “Our community safety partners work hard to make life better for local people and I want to support their efforts by funding schemes that complement and enhance their work. My team will work closely with partners to ensure the grants we distribute benefit the work already underway and maximise the impact and value of this funding for the public.” Calls in relation to antisocial behaviour have increased by almost 70% in the past year during the health crisis. This is also reflected in cases being managed by Derbyshire Victim’s Services. Antisocial Behaviour can affect individuals and communities and includes noise nuisance, neighbour disputes, threatening behaviour, litter/dog fouling, criminal damage/vandalism/graffiti and drug or alcohol misuse and fly-tipping. The Commissioner aims to fund a variety of projects from sports and creative arts diversionary programmes through to media-themed intervention including radio/film making and is particularly keen to support applications from organisations that offer some level of matched funding. Other projects could include drop-ins for young people, CCTV, community clean-ups, intergenerational schemes, mentoring projects, education initiatives and parental support programmes. In addition to voluntary groups, the Commissioner would welcome applications from both Parish and Town Councils. Applicants will need to provide evidence of a problem and propose community-based solutions including an emphasis on partnership working. The deadline for you to apply is 10 September 2021. Full details and criteria are available at: www.derbyshire-pcc.gov.uk/asb 17

BACK IN THE PUB A few people have remarked to me that they remember me writing for the first time in this esteemed publication that I was in the habit of frequenting the pub. Most have seemed quite pleased that their vicar should go to the pub! Thing is, I was a regular in the pub long before I was a regular in church, and I still sometimes feel more at ease among the gentle hubbub and conviviality of the bar than I do in the pews. This would probably horrify some of my predecessors from centuries past who were actively discouraging drinking booze and led the temperance movement. Having once run a homeless drop-in centre and known many (more affluent) people struggle with the demon-drink, I do not take these things lightly. But I would still like to write in defence of the pub. In our world we are gradually losing public spaces. The pub is the one of the original public spaces – literally a public house. The idea, quite simply, is that you open the doors of your house and serve beer and food to anyone who wants to come in. A private space becomes a public space. Seeing The Miner’s Arms on Carr Lane surrounded by fencing suggests to me it may not re-open; perhaps it is going the same way as the Talbot – more private housing? Have we really got to the stage where we place such value on private property that we are prepared to sacrifice what remains of our public spaces? Have we really decided that bottled beer and the telly beats community life? More being on our own, isolation, individualism? Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got. Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot. Wouldn’t you like to get away? Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came. You wanna be where you can see, our troubles are all the same. You wanna be where everybody knows your name. I’m hoping our churches can be like this. A home from home. A public house. But in the meantime, here’s to all our locals. Cheers! God bless all, Rev. Ian

HOLMESFIELD COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH JULY 2021 Following the series of lockdowns within the country the Police allowed a restrictive monitoring of vehicles in early May, and since then the Holmesfield speed watch team have carried out a further six one hour monitoring sessions. The Police request that if monitoring is taking place then for a set period you concentrate on one location and therefore we have had five sessions near Penny Acres School at the junction of Horsley Gate Lane and Main Road and one near the Rutland Arms at the junction of Cowley Lane and Main Road. At all sessions we have tried to monitor traffic flowing in both directions but it is difficult recording all information required with the limited number of volunteers so we are not able to record every vehicle exceeding the speed monitoring limit. The lockdowns have not altered driver behaviour when travelling through the village. The number of vehicles travelling through the village has if anything increased since early 2020 with an average of over 400 vehicles an hour passing through. Of these, outside the school we are recording between 9 and 17 % as travelling at over 35mph in a 30 mph area and this is when there are signs advertising a speed monitoring session is taking place and all volunteers have high visibility yellow jackets with a radar gun pointing at them! We are recording significantly fewer drivers exceeding the 35 mph outside the Rutland Arms (4%), but did record one individual travelling at 64mph! The Police require a margin of error in recording speeds but very few vehicles have been recorded as travelling at or below the correct speed of 30mph. The majority of vehicles recorded are travelling between 36 and 40mph but a small number of drivers are exceeding 41mph and a few over 50mph and as above, one individual at over 60mph. So the Police have sent out 274 letters to those drivers exceeding 36mph and it is sad to say that 8 have gone out to individuals living within the Parish. Volunteers to assist with monitoring are desperately needed to enable more monitoring to take place so if you can help, please contact Phil Reaney (Email: preaney@btinternet.com)

ULTRA FAST BROADBAND SERVICE FOR HOLMESFIELD You may already know that Openreach have proposed a Community Fibre Partnership to provide ultra-fast broadband to 60 properties in Cowley Lane, Barlow Lees Lane, Dobbin Lane and Peakley Hill. It will provide FFTP (Full Fibre to the Property) with download speeds up to 1 Gbps: www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband/community-fibre-partnerships The cost will be fully covered by the Government DCMS Rural Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme: www.giga.net.uk/rural-gigabit-voucher-scheme We have been informed that Openreach have now identified a further 110 Holmesfield properties whose low broadband speeds make them eligible for inclusion in the scheme. These are in the following post code areas; S18 7SB - S18 7SY - S18 7WT - S18 7WU - S18 7WW To find out if you are one of the eligible properties go to: www.gigabitvoucher.culture.gov.uk/home/who-is-eligible If you are eligible and would like to be included in the scheme you will need to ‘pledge’ your DCMS voucher on the website set up by Openreach: www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband/community-fibre-partnerships/connect-my-community Newly eligible properties will not be able to pledge their vouchers until Openreach have informed us that they have made the necessary modifications to their website. If you wish to be included in the scheme we will contact you to let you know when this has been done. Please send your name, address and email address to Morton Bell Email: morton@tecsec.co.uk The value of the DCMS vouchers is £1,500 per residential house and £3,500 if the premises are used for business purposes. To ensure that this is a ‘no cost scheme’ approximately 50 of the 110 newly eligible properties need to pledge their vouchers. If you have any questions about the scheme go to: www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/fttp-questions-and-answers If you would like to help in bringing this scheme to a successful conclusion - please contact one of the following: Wilfred Carr (Email: w.carr @sheffield.ac.uk), Morton Bell (Email: morton@tecsec.co.uk), or Michael Banks (Email: drmichaelbanks@btinternet.com). 27

HOLMESFIELD CHILDREN’S WELL DRESSING A big thank you to all who came to support and help out at the Children’s Well Dressing. The odds were stacked against us this year due to COVID restrictions and isolations, but we persevered and together we achieved something to be proud of. So well done guys!
MOBILE LIBRARY The county’s mobile library service is operating again on a 4-weekly cycle. The mobile library will be at 6 Park Rise, Holmesfield between 10.00am and 10.30am on Monday 9th August. The service will operate a `book and borrow’ system, which means you will need to phone 01629 533464 in advance to book an appointment and you will be able to pick up a maximum of 10 books. Appointment times will last 5 minutes – and for the time being – you will not be able to select your own books by stepping onto the vehicle. Instead, you will be asked what type of books you like reading and a selection will be made for you so you can pick them up at your allotted time. All returned books will be quarantined for 72 hours and you will need to bring your own bag to pick up your books. 29

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION At last we have been able to meet and host a very informative and entertaining speaker. At July’s meeting, Roger Hart gave a talk on “Gardening in Lockdown“. Lockdown of course provided, amongst other things, time to be in the garden and observe. We were informed and entertained by images of many creatures and flora including red spiders, rats, magpies, squirrels, hedgehogs, heron, woodpeckers and more. We were told of the work of the Totley Swift Group Which works to encourage swifts around the area and protect them. It was a very good evocation of what has been going on in our gardens during lockdown. In August our speaker will be Dr Bull speaking on “The Flora and Fauna of a Peak District Garden in Lockdown and its Vicinity.” His talk will begin at 7.30pm at Holmesfield Village Hall on Wednesday 4th August. On Saturday 21st August the Gardening Association will be holding its Annual Show in Holmesfield Village Hall. In the morning, members bring fruit, vegetables, home baking, preserves and offerings in various categories. They are judged and cups are presented. The public are invited to come and view the results after 2.30pm with tea and biscuits being available. We are always hoping to attract new members so if you have taken up your trowel during - or even before - lockdown please come along and have a look, and perhaps consider joining us. We have meetings throughout the year on the first Wednesday of the month. In summer months we try to visit gardens in the evening and at other times we have speakers at the Village Hall. Enquires should be directed to Mrs Hilary Olson our Social Activities Organiser on 0114 2890927 (please note the number given in last month’s report was incorrect).
HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP CHESHIRE CHEESE WALK On Wednesday 11th August, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from the Cheshire Cheese Inn, Edale Road, Hope S33 6ZF. We will walk past the Losehill House Hotel, cross Edale Road back on a footpath near Normans Farm, then return to the pub for lunch (optional). The walk is 4 miles long and fairly flat but a short cut is available. If you would like to come just turn up on the day. The cost of the walk is £4 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church maintenance fund. Please phone Robin on 01246 412767 if you have any queries.

MUSIC FOR A SUMMER’S EVENING Several months ago a tremendous amount of effort was involved in raising the money to buy an organ of which our church could be proud. This is a reminder that to hear how it really sounds when played by a professional, the place to be is St Swithin’s Church on Saturday August 7th at 7pm when Lyndon Ford will be taking to the console. Lyndon Ford was personally responsible for its installation, in particular the crucial sound balancing, ensuring that this beautiful instrument is in perfect harmony with the acoustics of the building. He is also a musician in his own right and so it seems fitting that he should perform the first of what we hope will be many enjoyable organ recitals at St Swithin’s. Lyndon is travelling all the way from Portsmouth just to perform for us and yet ticket sales are disappointingly low. Do please support this event by purchasing a ticket (£9.50) from John Wade (Tel: 0796 783 6061) or Penny (Tel: 0749 549 2820). Proceeds will go to the church and a glass of wine or a soft drink is included in the ticket price.
HGV INCIDENT IN MILLTHORPE At 2.20pm on 2nd June 2021 a massive ‘bang’ came from the above area like a vehicle crash at speed. Within a minute a jumbo HGV lorry and trailer came past the bungalows (on it’s left hand side) moving slowly at approx 20 mph. The HGV was from Bibby distribution. The vehicle didn’t stop. A drive down to just past the Millthorpe sign found a 10 metre bough off the old oak tree, 15” to 18” in diameter, lying in the road blocking half of it. Luckily no vehicles, horses etc. were following the lorry. Police 101 were informed as the driver had not stopped to report it. The transport manager at Bibby distribution was also contacted. At the end of the call to the Police 101 they were asked to inform the Highways Department to clear the road as it was a bus route and they would have had difficulty getting through. Several calls were made to Bibby’s transport manager to identify the vehicle in the next hour and a half. It was eventually picked up on their tracking system as heading towards their Ellesmere Port depot. The driver had not notified them of the incident. More needs to be done to prevent rogue vehicles passing through the village. 39

JUNE 2021 WEATHER In contrast to May the month of June was very dry. Only about 35% of the normally expected rain fell in June, whereas May had double the normal rainfall. I am always surprised how variable our rainfall is from month to month, so May and June were not unusual. Over the last eighteen years I have recorded the total rainfall each year and the average is 857mm (approx. 34 inches). It does appear that our rainfall has increased over the eighteen years since 2003 but the changes from year to year are quite large. 2003 was the driest year at 533mm and 2019 was the wettest at 1241mm. Our annual rainfall in Holmesfield is very similar to that recorded in Sheffield. I was born in Bury, only a few miles north of Manchester, and it certainly felt as though it was wetter there than in Sheffield. Actually the annual rainfall quoted for Manchester is very similar to that in Sheffield but Bury records about 20% more than Manchester. In my geography lessons I was told that Manchester is in a rain shadow because the mountains of Wales take the rain. The wettest major cities in the UK are Cardiff and Glasgow, with 1071mm and 1124mm respectively, in contrast with London that only records 583mm on average each year. So June was relatively dry, with almost twenty days without any rain. It was also quite warm, with an average temperature of 15°C, which is just over one degree higher than normal. The average daily maximum temperature was just under 20°C. 15°C is the average over both day and night. It was a pleasant month without any extremes and the garden seems to have enjoyed the change in conditions from May to June. Last month I quoted Flanders and Swann, yet again, and hoped that they were only joking when they sang “June just rains and never stops, Thirty days and spoils the crops”. They got it wrong this June. Brian Brown

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB
What can only be described as a roasting hot Saturday saw Holmesfield’s 1st XI play Nutbrook and the 2nd XI travel to Cutthorpe. HCC’s 1st XI batted first setting a superb target of 355. Nutbrook were bowled out for 225. Special mention to Mayank Sharma hitting 186 and taking 5 for 25. A brilliant team performance. Whilst over at Cutthorpe our 2nd XI batted first scoring 305/0 off 40 overs with Tony Brown retiring not out on 139 and Louis hitting his 1st senior 100 – at the age of 13 – making 106. Cutthorpe reached 162/7 off 40 overs as HCC took the win. 1st XI –League Table Previously, the 1st XI had comfortably beaten Ambergate, West Hallam White Rose 1st XI 242 Pts with us scoring an impressive 320, then bowling out the Holmesfield 1st XI 242 Pts opposition for 148. On the same day the 2nd’s lost narrowly Nutbrook 1st XI 207 Pts Darley Dale 1st XI 206 Pts to Chesterfield at Queens Park, the hosts scoring 192, whilst Marehay 2nd XI 189 Pts Hundall 1st XI 181 Pts we fell short finishing on 165 with 8 wickets down. Ashover Barbarians 1st XI 171 Pts Chesterfield 2nd XI 171 Pts Unfortunately, the first week of July saw both games Denby 2nd XI 168 Pts cancelled due to the weather! Matlock & Cromford 1st XI 161 Pts Ambergate 1st XI 89 Pts At the time of going to press the 1st XI are joint top of the Langley Mill United 2nd XI 84 Pts League with West Hallam White Rose. Ladies cricket Our ladies have produced two excellent displays winning both games since our last report. An excellent display in what was only their 3rd ever game saw a convincing win against Welbeck HCC 93, Welbeck 44. Welbeck batting first were restricted to 44 by some tight bowling – Clare Wood 2 wickets for 15 runs off 4 overs being the pick of the bowlers. Equally pleasing was the lack of extras recorded with only 8 wides being conceded (16 runs), this compared to 20 wides (40 runs) by Welbeck. Excellent batting saw us easily pass the Welbeck total with us only losing 1 wicket in the innings, Isobel Murray top scoring for the home team with an impressive 19, closely followed by one of our budding youngsters, Grace Bolsover, with 15. We hosted Blyth and Newark on Sunday. The rain just held off for the HCC vs Blyth match and the sun actually came out. A great match with HCC winning 161 runs to 53 runs. The Blyth and Newark match started but was abandoned due to rain as was the HCC vs Newark match which should have followed. 45
