DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM Crime figures for July 2021 - 2 crimes reported Public Order - 1, Vehicle Crime -1 As restrictions ease and people are spending more time away from their homes, it’s important to think about your home security. Here at Dronfield SNT we are happy to give residents guidance and information regarding home security but there are a few key points to consider: • Lock doors and Windows • Consider fitting door camera/property alarm etc • Ensure upstairs windows are closed and locked • Consider security lighting etc • Keep Valuables out of sight • Secure outbuilding and sheds etc In respect of local concerns about parking, it is important when parking to do this in a safe and considerate manner, considering where you’re parking and the implications for other road users and residents. Pavement parking is a hot topic and it’s important to remember that if you park on the pavement, you must leave adequate space for a double baby-buggy, wheelchairs and mobility scooters, etc. to get past on the pavement safely. Warnings are being issued to drivers across our area and enforcement action taken where appropriate. Recently, concerns have been raised about the excessive number of HGV vehicles going through the village of Holmesfield and Millthorpe. It is recommended that you obtain the details of the vehicle you have seen breaking the weight limit for the road and complete the weight restriction form on Derbyshire County Council website. www.derbyshire.gov.uk/transport-roads/roads-traffic/traffic-management/ freight-management/weight-limits/weight-limits-roads-and-highways.aspx Finally, as restrictions are lifting, we are keen to get out and about in the community and visit groups and organisations within the parish that are back up and running following the updated restrictions. Please feel free to get in touch as we are happy to pop in and say hi and maybe enjoy a cuppa with a copper! PCSO 12853 Jonathan Flower, Dronfield SNT 13

ASK FOR ANI Coronavirus restrictions have seen some victims of domestic abuse in lockdown with their perpetrator. As restrictions start to ease and vaccinations are given, we will all be pleased to see community spaces being safely enjoyed once again. For some victims, this may be a vital and previously unavailable opportunity to access information on how to escape their abuse. Ask for ANI is a Home Office led initiative to create safe spaces in pharmacies for domestic abuse victims to access support, or to report to the police. When a victim enters a participating pharmacy and asks for ANI (Assistance Needed Immediately), the staff member will offer to accompany that person to a private consultation room. Here, they will be offered access to support from the police or a support service. Victims can make this call themselves, or the staff can make the call on their behalf. Victims can distinguish which pharmacies are participating by looking for posters in the pharmacy window displaying the Ask for ANI text or the logo of a hand with a purple heart inside it.

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION Well I think everyone who helped with the wild flowers needs to congratulate themselves on achieving a beautiful display! Just in time for the Holmesfield Summer festival the village looked lovely, especially with the decorative scarecrows adding to the general effect. The Gardening Association was given a very interesting talk on “Life in a Derbyshire Garden and it environs” in August by Dr. Bull. The talk was by video as Dr Bull was isolating. He was able to continue the theme of last month’s talk by Roger Hart on ”Wild Life in the Garden”. Mr Hart very kindly set up the video for us. As people fortunate enough to have a garden are aware, lockdown gave us the opportunity to observe – as Dr. Bull did – badgers, cats, hedgehogs and birds and their behaviours. These were subjects which were very interesting and enjoyable. On Wednesday 1st September our talk will be by Mr. Carl Leeman of Millthorpe Nursery entitled “Plants for Awkward Spots“. As always the talk will be at 7.30pm at Holmesfield Village Hall. Forthcoming events include our annual Pie & Pea Supper with Entertainment in November – details will be in next month’s Parish Newsletter. All enquires to our Social Organiser – Hilary Olsen – on 01142890927. Frances Webb
HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP MONYASH WALK On Wednesday 8th September, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from the Bull’s Head in Monyash. We will walk down Bagshaw Dale, part of Lathkill Dale then across to the Limestone Way and back to Monyash, where we will have lunch (optional). The walk is 4 miles long and a short cut is available. If you would like to come just turn up on the day. The cost of the walk is £4 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church maintenance fund. Please phone Robin on 01246 412767 if you have any queries.
SUPERVISING CHILDREN’S ONLINE ACTIVITY Parents/Guardian’s should be aware about allowing your child unsupervised access to the internet and unlimited access to your bank details when playing games online. Monitor what kind of sites your child is visiting, keep track of who they are speaking to online, make sure you have security settings up to date and that your bank details can’t be accessed without your permission. HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL As our new starters excitedly begin their school careers with us here at Penny Acres, here is a little poem to remind us about those early days of school. A Child’s Plea (Original Author Unknown) Today I did my maths and science. I toasted bread, I halved and quartered, counted, Measured, and used my eyes, ears and hands. I added and subtracted on the way. I used magnets, blocks and talked about my day. I learned about a rainbow and how to weigh. So please don’t say - ‘ANYTHING IN YOUR BAG TODAY?’ You see. I’m sharing as I play, to learn to listen and speak clearly when I talk. To wait my turn and when inside to walk. To put my words into a phrase, to find my name and write it down. To do it with a smile and not a frown To put my painting brush away. So please, don’t say - ‘WHAT NOTHING IN YOUR BAG TODAY?’ I learned about a snail and a worm. Remembered how to take my turn. Helped a friend when he was stuck. Learned that water runs off a duck. Looked at words from left to right. Agreed to differ, not to fight. So please don’t say - DID YOU ONLY PLAY TODAY?’!

VACCINE PASSPORT SCAMS Action Fraud has received over 700 reports from members of the public about fake emails purporting to be from the NHS. The emails claim to be able to provide people with a “digital passport” that “proves you have been vaccinated against COVID-19”. These emails are fake, and the links within them lead to genuine-looking websites that steal your personal and financial information. How to protect yourself: In the UK, coronavirus vaccines will only be available via the National Health Services of England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. You can be contacted by the NHS, your employer, a GP surgery or pharmacy local to you, to receive your vaccine. Remember, the vaccine is free of charge. At no point will you be asked to pay. • The NHS will never ask you for your bank account or card details. • The NHS will never ask you for your PIN or banking passwords. • The NHS will never arrive unannounced at your home to administer the vaccine. • The NHS will never ask you to prove your identity by sending copies of personal documents such as your passport, driving licence, bills or pay slips. • Your vaccination status can be obtained for free through the official NHS app, NHS website, or by calling the NHS on 119.
How to report scams: If you receive a call you believe to be fraudulent, hang up. If you are suspicious about an email you have received, you can report it by forwarding the email to: report@phishing.gov.uk. Suspicious text messages can also be reported by forwarding them to the number: 7726 (it’s free of charge). If you believe you are the victim of a fraud, please report this to Action Fraud as soon as possible by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk.

HOLMESFIELD LOCAL MARKET UPDATE We had a fantastic response to our market on 17th July. It was touch and go as to whether we would get the marketing going this year, but thankfully there were no more restrictions! The team had been planning the market for over 10 weeks and Carl had contacted all our previous stall holders. We had a great response and on the day we had a full house!
The weather was fantastic which made the event even better! We could not put the market together if we didn’t have the support of all of our volunteers who give up their time on the day to cover car parking, giving directions, selling raffle tickets, managing the bins, putting out the cones and signs... the list is long. So you know who you are... thank you so much for your continuous support. In particular we need to particularly thank Alison Taylor who carried out the Risk Assessment for the market.. which was a little more complex as we were still operating within the legal requirements post July 19th ‘Freedom Day’. The atmosphere at the market was fantastic and we were lucky to have the talented Barry Fisher who provided live music on the day. Thank you Barry for volunteering your time. We have to also thank Helen Geary for her contribution to the village market team. Helen has decided to step down as a committee member but continued to support us by managing the Fruit & Veg stall. Helen also did a great job helping us with the Scarecrow competition, organising the presentation on the Saturday after the market. Thanks again. 30
During lockdown the Market team were instrumental in driving a lot of the activity that we saw in the community. As the market planning comes back into play, we have asked the Holmesfield Village Society if they might start to run the activities like they have in the past. We know the HVS need more volunteers, so if you can offer some time please come along to the meeting in the George & Dragon on Monday 20th September at 7:30pm. The market team will continue to run the Halloween Pumpkin Trail and the November Poppies / Soldiers set up as well as the markets until the HVS is up and running again. The Holmesfield Support Network – WhatsApp and Facebook pages – will stay open and if anyone needs anything please feel free to contact us or share local information on these forums. During the lockdown we received a £500 grant from North East Derbyshire District Council to support the activities. The money that NEDDC gave was used towards some of the activities we did last year and this year. We have also just purchased bunting for the village which can be used for the markets, village festival and any other activities we may have in the village. In summary we thought it would be good to share with you how we use some of the money we raise from the Market and also the NEDDC grant. All of the money that is raised is used for the benefit of supporting our community.
As well as the items above, we funded the NHS banners for Millthorpe and Holmesfield, contributed £150 to the Toddler group to purchase new toys and we are hoping that Sarah Webb will get enough volunteers to set up the Youth Group. The market team have offered some financial support to the group when it’s up and running. If you have any suggestions of other groups that may need funding or any ideas for improvements / projects in the village please contact us via: Holmesfieldlocalmarket@gmail.com. The next market will be held on Saturday 4th December. This will be a very special market with a large number of stalls that will be situated in the Village Hall, Church Hall, the Angel and the Angel car park. Thank you all for your support in July, we hope we can count on you all to join us again in December. Take care all. The market team – Aoife, Mandy, Andrea and Carl Farrell (two Carls in the village so we need to point out the surname!) 31

JULY 2021 WEATHER It will be the end of August or perhaps early September when you read this. I wonder if you can remember that we had a week of glorious summer in the middle of July? From 16th July the sun shone, the sky was blue, and the temperature went above 25°C on every day. The warmest day was the 17th when it reached 30°C (86°F) at 4pm. It was sufficiently warm and humid to stop me considering doing very much, such as gardening. Hot days usually reach their peak in the middle of the afternoon when the ground has had time to absorb the heat of the sun and so add to the air temperature. For the same reason our hottest days usually occur in July or August and not in June – the middle of summer. Sea temperatures peak even later in the year because the water takes a very long time to warm. My recorded temperature of 30°C was not quite matched by that recorded from the ‘proper weather station’ at Weston Park in Sheffield. 29.4°C (85°F) was recorded there. On average, the temperature at Weston Park is about 0.6°C higher than here in Holmesfield because we are about 330ft higher. It may actually have been warmer here than at Weston Park on that day but my weather station will read slightly higher than a ‘proper weather station’, because my thermometer is not enclosed in a large Stevenson Screen. This is a large louvered box, rather like a bee hive, that is used to protect the thermometer from the sun. My weather station only has a small enclosure that does not give the same level of protection from the sun. This means that, whilst for most of the year I record the temperatures accurately, on very hot calm and sunny days my readings are slightly high. The Stevenson Screen was first designed by Thomas Stevenson (1818–1887), a Scottish civil engineer who designed many lighthouses and who was the father of author Robert Louis Stevenson. July as a whole was almost two degrees warmer than an average July. The rainfall was 81.6mm, which is very slightly above my normal for the month. The weather deteriorated towards the end of the month and I recorded the wind as 34mph on the 29th as we felt the effect of storm Evert that passed to the south of Derbyshire. Brian Brown

NFU REPORT ON RURAL CRIME Derbyshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster has welcomed the latest report from the NFU looking at rural crime, saying it raised awareness of the problems faced by rural communities. Commissioner Angelique Foster said: “The report echoes what people across the county have been telling me. Rural crime remains a problem. Crimes are committed by both organised gangs and opportunistic offenders. The cost, stress and inconvenience to those affected can be huge. Just a few days ago I met with local farmers, vets and a member of the Derbyshire Rural Crime Team to hear about the issues in South Derbyshire. We discussed the distinct policing needs of farming and rural communities. I heard about the impact antisocial behaviour, hare coursing, fly tipping, theft of equipment, sheep worrying and damage to property has on local residents, particularly those affected. I have been clear from the outset that tackling rural crime is a key priority for me. I look forward to meeting with the NFU and other partners to explore how we can work together to effectively tackle the problems in rural areas and provide appropriate support to victims. I will include strong practical measures in my forthcoming Police and Crime Plan and the experience and insight of these rural specialists will be a big help as I develop my ideas.”
The report can be found at www.nfumutual.co.uk/farming/ruralcrime

DOMESTIC ABUSE HELP STILL AVAILABLE Victims of domestic abuse are being reminded that support is still available to them 24 hours a day, despite the current coronavirus pandemic. In Derbyshire there are a variety of organisations that can help support domestic abuse victims – no matter their situation. Detective Chief Inspector Brian Bilby, Derbyshire Constabulary’s lead for domestic abuse, said: “While many things have changed in light of the current crisis one thing remains the same – that the force and our partners remain committed to protecting the victims of domestic abuse. If you are in a situation where you are fearful for your life you should call 999 immediately – no matter the time of day. If, however, if that is not the case you are still a victim and should report the abuse that you are suffering by contacting us with a private message to the main force Facebook (@derbyshireconstabulary) and Twitter account (@Derpolcontact)”. These are monitored 24/7 and you will receive the same service as if you were calling the non-emergency 101.
MOBILE LIBRARY The county’s mobile library service is operating again on a 4-weekly cycle. The mobile library will be at 6 Park Rise, Holmesfield between 10.00am and 10.30am on Monday 6th September. The service will operate a `book and borrow’ system, which means you will need to phone 01629 533464 in advance to book an appointment and you will be able to pick up a maximum of 10 books. Appointment times will last 5 minutes – and for the time being – you will not be able to select your own books by stepping onto the vehicle. Instead, you will be asked what type of books you like reading and a selection will be made for you so you can pick them up at your allotted time. All returned books will be quarantined for 72 hours and you will need to bring your own bag to pick up your books. 41

Charity Match
HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB
A Stuart Huckerby Memorial Cricket match in aid of St Luke’s Hospice has been arranged for Friday 3rd September from 3pm. A BBQ and bar will be available with all proceeds going to St Lukes. Stuart was one of the main driving forces behind the club both as a player and later as the manager of the first junior side at Holmesfield, not to mention other duties such as treasurer and chief story teller! His passing earlier in the year was a great loss to both club and local community. Please come down and support this great cause.
Match News The weekend of the 24th July was certainly a busy one and possibly season defining. The First XI travelled to Hallam White Rose knowing that a win would place them firmly on top of the league. Our opponents won the toss and decided to field, tight bowling 1st XI –League Table and a steady loss of wickets saw us fall short of a good total, West Hallam White Rose 1st XI 317 Pts finally being all out for 159. Hallam reached the required total Holmesfield 1st XI 313 Pts Marehay 2nd XI 265 Pts scoring 160 for 6 wickets off 30 overs, a win that saw them go Darley Dale 1st XI 257 Pts top of the league. Nutbrook 1st XI 245 Pts Hundall 1st XI 245 Pts Meanwhile the 2nd XI played host to Buxton. Batting first, the Denby 2nd XI 230 Pts Ashover Barbarians 1st XI 228 Pts Vill amassed another impressive score reaching 258 for the Chesterfield 2nd XI 222 Pts loss of 6 wickets – Simon Welsh 53, Tony Brown 58 and Max Matlock & Cromford 1st XI 205 Pts Langley Mill United 2nd XI 118 Pts Wood (U13’s) scoring his first senior 50, finishing on 51 not Ambergate 1st XI 117 Pts out. Congratulations Max! In reply Buxton were all out for 112. The weekend also saw us host a Ladies’ cricket festival at the ground with teams from Wellbeck, Belper Meadows and Buxton attending. Players and crowd amassing to over 100 people saw some brilliant games of cricket, a great advertisement for the game.

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB (CONT.) More recently we have seen a mixed set of results for our Saturday sides with the 1st XI beating Darley Dale and Chesterfield but losing to Matlock. Meanwhile the 2nd XI lost to Eckington in a tight game with Holmesfield all out for 149. Eckington hit the required runs (153 for 9) off 38.1 overs. Disappointingly the game against Morton was conceded by them meaning another blank weekend for the 2nd XI. Ladies cricket In addition to the highly successful cricket festival, Holmesfield Ladies have played league games against Ordsall, Sleaford and Newark. Although all the games resulted in losses for us, the margin of defeat was very tight with no more than 8 runs difference in any game. Bearing in mind this is our first season in the league, and very much a learning experience, the outlook for next year is very positive and we will be expecting to compete for top spot! All in all its been a great and enjoyable experience for all those who have taken part, if anybody fancies playing next year please let us know.
Junior Success Capping off a tremendous season for our junior sides, the U13 side travelled to Doncaster to play Doncaster Town CC in the Ben Jessop league. A strong batting performance set a target of 109 and strong fielding saw Doncaster bowled out for 79. The result saw us finish 3rd in the league with 22 points, just behind Collegiate - 24 points and Eckington - 27 points.
Summer Camps The last of our summer camps were run on the 26th & 27th August. Forthcoming Fixtures Saturday 28th August: 1st XI away v Marehay 2nd XI: home v Calow Saturday 4th September: 1st XI home v Denby 2nd XI: home v Clowne Saturday 11th September: 1st XI away v Langley Mill 2nd XI: no fixture
