POLICE REPORT TO PARISH COUNCIL The crimes for September 2021 included 1 theft, 1 burglary and 2 public order offences. There have again been a number of catalytic converter thefts in the Dronfield area and residents are advised to remain vigilant. The Safer Neighbourhood Team are working with CREST and Penny Acres school to raise awareness of speeding through the village. The SNT are happy to have a chat with residents about crime prevention advice and have stickers available to advise if they do not wish to participate in Halloween activity. There is also ongoing work in tackling parking issues.

DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM Crime figures for September 2021 - 4 crimes reported Theft: 1 (–1 from last month), Burglary: 1 (+1 from last month), Public Order: 2 (+2 from last month), Drugs: 0 (–1 from last month), Criminal Damage: 0 (no change), Vehicle Crime: 0 (no change) . Dronfield SNT would like to remind people that as we start to spend more time away from the home address or as the holidays abroad may be more tempting now the restrictions have started to lift, it’s important to think about your home security as well taking into account sheds and out buildings, as some of the incidents over the last month have involved these. Dronfield SNT are happy to have a chat with residents about crime prevention advice, so please feel free to contact the team and we would be happy to have individual discussions. Dronfield SNT work continues in respect of tackling parking and educating / taking suitable enforcement action for poor parking across the area, which you will respect is an ongoing project and in a similar manner speeding also. A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW DISTRICT COUNCILLOR Following the recent by-election in Barlow and Holmesfield ward, I was pleased to be elected to represent you on North East Derbyshire District Council. Thank you to all who voted during the election and to the two candidates who stood as well. It is an honour to represent this ward, where my family have lived for several generations and where I’m now bringing up my own children. For those that don’t know me personally, I am married to Chelsea and we have two children who both go to school locally. My eldest at Penny Acres (where my wife is a governor) and my youngest at nursery who will be joining her older brother in September. It was great to spend a couple of weeks out meeting and talking with residents during election time. I’ve been down every farm track and quiet country lanes across the two parishes and it makes you realise how beautiful our part of the world really is. It’s been a busy first few weeks as a newly elected councillor! After signing my declaration of office and attending my first full council (as well as both Barlow’s and Holmesfield’s Parish council meetings) I’ve been attending various civic services and events, supporting the Chairman of the Council’s charity fundraising appeal for Ashgate Hospice, as well as responding to various resident concerns across the ward; from fly tipping to overgrown verges and planning issues. I look forward to continuing this hard work as your elected representative. NEW DIRECTIONAL SIGN FOR MILLTHORPE A local resident has kindly offered to fund a traditional directional sign for the triangle at the junction of Millthorpe Lane, Mill Lane and New Road. The Parish Council will now submit an application for the works.

No. 43 BUS - ANOTHER TIMETABLE CHANGE

The frequency of the daytime No. 43 bus service operated by Stagecoach which runs from Chesterfield to Sheffield via Dronfield Woodhouse and Gosforth Valley will reduce from 3 per hour to 2 per hour from 1st November (Monday to Friday). Telephone the relevant organisation to confirm the caller’s identity • Do not rely on a phone number that the caller gives you. • Do not feel pressurised into buying items on your doorstep and be wary of callers who may offer home repairs or gardening. HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP (CONT.) In November we will be putting up the poppies and the soldiers in memory of all of those who served in the wars. REMEMBRANCE DAY Holmesfierld St. Swithin’s church will be hosting the traditional Remembrance Sunday memorial service on 14th November from 10.30am including wreath laying at the village war memorial.

IN MEMORY OF GEORGE STEPHENSON Tapton House School in Chesterfield is where the famous railway engineer George Stephenson lived in his retirement (he died in room 5 over the main entrance). One of his best friends was renowned architect Sir Joseph Paxton and they had some success growing exotic plants and fruits in the orangery. Paxton arranged to have a horse chestnut tree planted right outside Stephenson’s office which became the headteacher’s office and earlier this year a quantity of horse chestnut seeds from this tree were collected and successfully germinated. Two of these saplings have been earmarked for planting in the field behind St. Swithin’s church car park and in due course they will have a commemorative plaque in memory of a pioneer of some fame who died in the area and is buried in Holy Trinity Church on Newbold Road.

The talk on wildlife in the Lee Brook Valley was enjoyed very much, not only for the array of wildlife portrayed which covered many different animals, birds and insects, but also for the brilliant photography of Mr Crowson and he is to be congratulated. It is here where I remind you that our next event on Wednesday 3rd November is the Annual Gardening Association’s Pie & Pea Supper when we shall not only be offering pie & peas with a delicious pudding (vegetarian alternative available) from ‘Delilicious’ but entertainment from the ‘Busking Buddies’ in the form of popular ballads and jokes. HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP EYAM WALK On Wednesday 3rd November, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from the Miners Arms pub, Eyam (DE45 1SR). We will walk on the Bridleway down to Stoney Middleton then up another bridleway near the church, passing the Riley graves before returning to Eyam for lunch (optional). The walk is approx. 4 miles long (a short cut is available) and should be mud free! If you would like to come just turn up on the day. SEPTEMBER 2021 WEATHER September this year was considerably warmer and also drier than normal. We had fourteen days when the temperature rose above 20°C and very little rain until two days almost at the end of the month. The Met Office said that England had experienced the third warmest September on record. I was interested to see if my weather station records – that now go back for 20 years – also showed that September was my hottest. Looking back, it seemed that this year was my warmest September but I did not have a figure for 2006 because my weather station was out of action for four weeks over September and October that year because spiders had got into the electronics! This led me to look up the records for the Weston Park weather station for 2006 and I then discovered that September 2006 was actually slightly warmer than this year, so this year was only the second warmest over the past twenty years. The history of the weather station at Weston Park is quite interesting. It was started in September 1882 by Elijah Howarth, the Curator of what is now Weston Park Museum. He had observed the regular outbreaks of bacterial infections in Sheffield and thought that these were related to the weather, in particular the temperature, and so he thought that it might be possible to predict such outbreaks by monitoring the weather. The resulting weather records, over almost 140 years, are one of the longest records in the UK and they form part of the Met Office network for the UK. The weather station is operated by staff of the Weston Park Museum. Some interesting records from Weston Park are: Hottest Temperature: 35.1C (95.2°F) in July 2019; Coldest Temperature: -14.6C (5.7°F) in February 1895; Wettest Day: 119 mm ( 4.7 inches) on 15th July 1973 Weston Park Museum dates from 1875. It was originally a private house called Weston Hall, built in 1795, and the park formed the garden of the Hall. The Harrison family who owned it died out in 1873 and subsequently Sheffield council bought the property. The name of the Curator, Elijah Howarth, sounds very grand but he was actually the son of a Liverpool brewer whose father was a labourer. Elijah started work as a clerk in Liverpool where he helped to establish the Walker Art Gallery, before moving to Sheffield at the age of 27. In the 1901 census he and his wife lived in Sheffield and had six children. He died in 1938 and was then living in Stoneland House on Chesterfield Road, Dronfield. Brian Brown 43

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB

Another season has been and gone, but it has been one to remember. Possibly the most successful in the club’s history, with promotion to division 2, silverware for the juniors, record numbers of members and players and great strides in developing the ground. None of this comes without a lot of work behind the scenes, both by club members and the local community. The support this year for the club has been fantastic and much of the work would not have been completed without the help of Peter Gaunt, Oliver Hill and Charlie Village just to mention a few. Also, a big thanks to Robert Hadfield for his generous donation. We also thank all the members of the 100 club which brings in much needed funds throughout the season. We have a total of 90 members who are nonplayers – Many Thanks. Some of the work is still ongoing with projects to further improve practice facilities and generally tidy up the ground, which is now looking fantastic. We have received many compliments throughout the season about the ground, the condition of the playing surface and the general hospitality of the club. Over the winter we will continue to improve the club and have several exciting projects in mind. Watch this space for further news! SAY NO TO ASB CAMPAIGN

Antisocial behaviour (ASB) incidents have increased over the last three years. Police forces, councils and housing associations are reporting significant spikes in ASB cases – and these are not minor incidents. They are complex and serious cases causing real harm to many people. 45% of people say ASB is a problem where they live, and 56% of those who had either been a victim of or a witness to ASB did not report it to anyone. * To help tackle the issue, we are running a campaign encouraging people to SAY NO TO ASB. The campaign will run from the 25th October through to the 21st November on our social channels with key information on recognising, recording, and reporting ASB on our website: www.ourwatch.org.uk/asb. We are running a free online ‘SAY NO TO ASB’ webinar on 15th November at 5pm with the charity ASB Help as part of the campaign. Places are limited. John will also be exhibiting a collection of his landscape, abstract paintings and gilded portraits inspired by his interest in mythology and religious symbolism. Some previously shown photographs and light installations and quirky linocut prints with a leaning towards endangered species will also be on show. FRIENDS OF GILLFIELD WOOD Monday 8th November: “Hedgehogs” is an illustrated talk by Jo Wilkinson. An insight into the lives of Hedgehogs and what you can do to help them. Please note this is a Zoom meeting from 7.30pm. If you are not a member of the group but you would like to attend via Zoom, please email our secretary, Andy, on fogwsecretary@gmail.com. Saturday 13th November: A walk in the wood looking for Fungi with Chris Kelly of Sorby Natural History Society. We will meet at the bottom of Totley Hall Lane at 10am. You can leave the event when you wish but if you would like to stay into the afternoon then you may want to bring a packed lunch. Suitable winter clothing is recommended. Strong footwear is also recommended, due to the time of year and the fact that we are likely to be off the footpaths at times. Practical Conservation Mornings. From 10am for 2 to 3 hours on one Sunday in the month on an agreed date with the Sheffield City Council Ranger who attends our work mornings with appropriate tasks (light and heavy) and tools. We meet either at the Baslow Road bus terminus, the Scout Hut on Aldam Road, Totley or at the end of Totley Hall Lane. The work mornings are advertised on posters around Totley, in the local press and nearer the date are emailed out. Due to Covid precautions there are no drinks or biscuits provided so we recommend you bring along your own refreshments. If you are interested in helping us carry out such work in Gillfield Wood or have any questions, please contact fogwsecretary@gmail.com We may also arrange the occasional mid-week Conservation Morning where we will not have the help of a Council Ranger but will concentrate on tasks we can do independently. Here we are likely to meet at the Baslow Road bus terminus at 10.00am. Bring spade/shovel and rake if you have them/one. And gloves and flask. HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted. Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. We are grateful to Pat Morton for sharing this evocative image of the Robin Hood at Lydgate c.1930-32 with the Barlow Hounds. This was the birthplace of her late husband - Charles - in 1930. The pub closed c.2000. People presume this was the only public house between Holmesfield and Owler Bar but there was another pub at Pewit called the Grouse Inn. Daniel Vickers’ beerhouse license was revoked in 1870 as he was reportedly prone to bouts of aggression and irrational behaviour. The family left Pewit to a farm at Hathersage.
