The Safer Neighbourhood Team are continuing to work within the community in respect of inappropriate parking. This time of year has often - as in previous years - seen increase in burglaries and the Safer Neighbourhood Team remind residents that security starts at home and are happy to visit residents and offer further support or advice.

HOLMESFIELD YOUTH CLUB Glow! Holmesfield’s new youth club had an excellent first evening in November. Twenty-one local young people turned up to wrestle each other in Sumo suits, daub neon paints upon their faces, pot some shots at pool and generally enjoy themselves while snacking on treats from the tuck shop. The next one is planned for 6th December 7.00-8.30pm in Holmesfield Church Hall and is for young people in Y7-11. We really need some more volunteers to be able to run the group regularly. If you’re over 18, young at heart and would like to find out more about what it’s like to be involved with this fantastic group of young people contact Sarah Webb for a chat on 07929582233 or email: sarah@webbhome.co.uk We’re grateful for the generosity of local individuals and organisations including our own Holmesfield Local Market, St Swithin’s Church and NEDCC to make it happen. 13

HOLMESFIELD’S NEW VILLAGE SOCIETY COMMITTEE Hello from the “New” Holmesfield Village Society Committee! The Village Society was established over 25 years ago to raise funds and run events that help bring together the people of Holmesfield and the Parish. It’s also worth noting, that while it’s called the ‘Holmesfield Village Society’, the Society does actually Alison Taylor (Treasurer), Elaine Liversidge (Social Media), include all the villages in the Parish. The Helen Geary (Chair), Adam Kilner (Secretary). Village Society has achieved many things over the years, not least the building of facilities such as the children’s playground and the Millennium Garden for the enjoyment of us all. In our first few weeks we have already drawn upon the experience and knowledge of the previous committee, which has been invaluable, and we want to extend huge thanks to them for all the hard work they have done over recent years, and we know that we can count on their continued support. The Holmesfield Market Committee also deserve a HUGE thank-you for the work they have done in particular over the last two years during exceptionally tough times for us all. They have helped to shape and strengthen the goodwill and community spirit that now exists in our village and they were quick to form support networks for the benefit of all our villagers during the various lockdowns we have been through. The Market Committee will now focus more on running the amazing markets which we missed so much during lockdowns. The next Holmesfield Market is on Saturday 4th December – be sure not to miss it – come along and support artisan stalls and get your Christmas shopping underway! The new Holmesfield Village Society committee was formed in October 2021 and we have already planned a number of special Christmas events in the village to end the year, which we very much hope you will come along and support – we have our first movie night at The Village Hall on the 12th December – come and get on board the Polar Express with us and enjoy hot dogs, popcorn with a licensed bar for the grown ups! On the 19th December we have Santa coming to the village and he will be in his Grotto at the George & Dragon, followed by carols around the trees in the Millennium Gardens with hot mulled cider and mince pies. Look out for our updates and posts on the Holmesfield Community Facebook page. We are very much hoping that with the Market Committee’s and your support, we can run more great activities in our gorgeous village in 2022. The Holmesfield Village Society committee normally meet every Monday at 6.30pm in the George & Dragon. We welcome all ideas and suggestions and look forward to recruiting volunteers. We hope you will want to get involved! Look out for Holmesfield Village Society news on Facebook at www.facebook.com/groups/holmesfield. We look forward to seeing you all in December! With thanks from the new Holmesfield Village Society Committee 15

HE’S BEHIND YOU! Oh no he isn’t!… Oh yes he IS! Ah the familiar banter of the pantomime, thankfully returning this year. The dressing up, the make up, the cheap gags, the comic-drama of it all - and laced within, the magic of Christmas. Both the festive singing and spirit, and the old tale of the underdog overcoming the odds to win the day / get the girl / beat the baddies. Whichever way you look at it, Christmas is a human drama. Whether its the drama of getting your family together and not knowing if Uncle Bob is going to get into a row about Brexit with your partner; or the dramas predictably coming to a head on Albert Square or Coronation Street or as the Strictly final nears. The drama of kids crashing into the room in the wee hours to announce that Santa had in fact visited in the night; the building drama and tension of whether the presents bought will be liked or loathed by our loved ones. And how did all this fuss start? After the pain (no gas and air) and sweat and tension of labour, a child was born. “But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.” (Hmmm, I bet there was some crying and a few nappies to be changed!). And so God comes, into the messy drama of human life. Into our tragicomic reality, bringing peace, overcoming the odds, winning the day: Light and life to all he brings Risen with healing in his wings Mild he lays his glory by Born that man no more may die Born, that no matter what life throws at you, whatever dramas or pantomimes your life looks like, you will always know - he’s behind you. And the only surprise is the generosity of the gift - everlasting love. Some say, “Oh no he isn’t?” Well you know what’s I’m gonna say: Oh yes he is! Christmas blessings to you and all those you love. Rev. Ian
BETTY BOOKER We wish to record the sad passing of Betty Booker aged 95 on 9th October 2021 and her burial on 25th October. The family would like to thank all relatives and friends for their support at this sad time. 17

CHRISTINGLE SERVICE Many people have told me how much they love the special Christingle service held each year in St. Swithin’s church at 6pm on Christmas Eve. Arrive at 5.30pm to collect your Christingles. As well as being a magical occasion it helps to raise funds for the important work of the Children’s Society. This really is a big village occasion, and we could do with help from people in the village to make sure it all runs smoothly on the night. If this is something you can support us with please do get in touch with me. Thank you. Rev. Ian.
CHRISTMAS DAY LUNCH AT HOLMESFIELD CHURCH Don’t spend Christmas day alone ! Robin and Jane Greetham are planning a Christmas Dinner in Holmesfield Church Hall on December 25th especially for those people who are likely to be on their own on Christmas day. There is no charge. If you would like to be there, please phone Robin & Jane on 01246 412767 so that they know how many to cater for and be notified of any special dietary requirements. Lifts can be arranged. Guests are requested to ensure they are up to date with vaccinations.
FROM THE PARISH REGISTERS Baptisms: 28th November - Josie Kathleen Thompson and Lilly Mae Burgin Funerals: 22nd November - Kathleen Johnson at St. Swithin’s church.
ALL DOG OWNERS Dog fouling issues are the worst they have ever been in Holmesfield. Most people take poo bags out with then and remove it, but others give all dog owners a bad name by leaving it. The irresponsible ones do not use poo bags, they go out under the cover of darkness and think picking it up does not apply to them. Some go out in broad daylight and leave a mess on footpaths used by the children on their way to school. 19

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION On 3rd November the Association held the annual Pie & Pea Supper for the first time since lockdown. Prior to lockdown, the Supper held at the end of the Gardening season (although many gardeners regard Autumn as the beginning of next year’s Gardening programme ; a time to plan and prepare) was a popular village event not just for gardeners but for everyone in the village. People were wondering if anyone would want to come after the trials of the past few months but fortunately lots of members and their friends attended. Everyone seemed very pleased to meet with friends and enjoy the delicious pies and puds whilst listening to the gentle tunes of the Busking Buddies and their comfortingly familiar jokes. Unfortunately Catherine Nuttgens is unable to give a talk on tree planting but has been replaced by Mr. Don Witton who is to talk to us on “A Hardy Planter’s Winter Survival Kit” on Wednesday 1st December. In January we are having a talk from Mr. Peter Forrow on the relevant subject of “The Gardening Year Part One“ and he will be following up this talk later in 2022 with “The Gardening Year Part Two”. In February we have our Annual General Meeting so we do not have a speaker, but this is the Meeting when the Results of the Hyacinth Growing Competition are judged and traditionally the Garden Association Committee provided some festive treats for the members. All talks commence at 7.30pm at Holmesfield Village Hall on the first Wednesday of the month. A small charge is made for visitors. Don’t forget your Hyacinths !! Frances Webb
HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP DRONFIELD WALK On Wednesday 1st December, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from the Jolly Farmer public house on Pentland Road, Dronfield Woodhouse (S18 8ZQ). We will walk down the Lea Brook Valley then up Stubley Lane to Summerwood followed by crossing the fields to Barnes Lane and back to the Jolly Farmer for lunch (optional). The walk is approx. 4 miles long and a short cut is available. If you would like to come just turn up on the day. The cost of the walk is £4 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church maintenance fund. Please phone Robin on 01246 412767 if you have any queries. 21

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP It is good to hear that so many people have availed themselves of the booster vaccinations. To date in North East Derbyshire, 89% of the population over 12 years old have had their first vaccination and 84% have had the second. The numbers of those who have received boosters are not available at the moment. At time of writing there were two people admitted daily to Chesterfield, this was -11% on the previous 7 days ((Source: Coronavirus.data.gov.uk). So the numbers are looking better! If you do want to get your booster, you can now book your appointment online at: www.nhs.uk/book-a-coronavirus-vaccination As the winter months come, should anyone need any assistance please let us know. However, we would like to point out that our volunteers give up their free time to support people and unfortunately we had a report this month of a member in the community being quite rude and unkind to one of our volunteers. This is not acceptable behaviour and in this particular case we have had to withdraw our support. As we start to hand over some of our activities to Holmesfield Village Society, this will be our last round up of the Halloween Pumpkin Trail. This tradition will continue but next year the HVS will run it. It has been an absolute resounding success again this year – thank you all for your help. Particular thanks goes to the Shepley family and all at Woodthorpe Hall for hosting the Warm Cider & Spooky Treats, and building the spooky trail through the woods. The event that you all supported raised £149.45, which was shared as a donation to St. Swithin’s Church and the village.

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP (CONTINUED) You may remember that Penny Acres school had a fantastic scarecrow display this year and won the Children’s Prize. We finally managed to get the certificate and prize to them, kindly donated by Holmesfield Local Market. Thanks to Mr Radcliffe and Mrs Smith for their help! The memorials and poppies look great around the village. We will leave these up until the end of November. Thank you to Andrea for putting all the names on the poppies. The funding for this year’s poppies was supported by the grant we received from North East Derbyshire District Council.
Finally, a very important date for you all to remember – HOLMESFIELD LOCAL MARKET is back on 4th December, 10am – 2pm. There are over 30 stalls, lots of new and exciting local businesses. Please come and support the event. The market will be in the Angel Inn, St. Swithin’s Church Hall and Holmesfield Village Hall. There will be live musical entertainment in both venues. The market team are really excited to also tell you about the fabulous Holmesfield Local Market bags that will be available for sale at the Market. These are canvas tote bags and can be washed and used again! They will be available from a number of stalls on the day at a price of £4. As always, all profits that the Local Market team make are used for the running of the market and to support our Holmesfield and Millthorpe communities. Finally, if you are feeling a bit apprehensive about social mixing, we are encouraging people to wear masks if that makes you feel safer, but it is not a legal requirement. Just to remind you, if you need any support please contact us via the Holmesfield Support Network on facebook – just search @Holmesfield2020 to find our page. KEEP HACKERS OUT OF YOUR ONLINE ACCOUNTS Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) is the single most important thing you can do to improve the security of your online accounts. What is 2FA? Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a way of strengthening the login security of your online accounts. It’s similar to how an ATM works. You need both your debit card (first factor) and your PIN (second factor) to get access to your account and withdraw cash. The main objective is better security. If your card is stolen, they still need your PIN. If your PIN is stolen, they still need your card. Enabling 2FA will help to stop hackers from getting into your accounts, even if they have your password. How do I enable 2FA on my accounts? 2FA is available on the most popular online services and apps like Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, AOL, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, PayPal, etc. For more of the government’s latest advice on how to stay secure online, visit the Cyber Aware website: www.ncsc.gov.uk/cyberaware

OCTOBER 2021 WEATHER October this year was not particularly remarkable. It was a little warmer than usual and also rather wetter. It was 0.8°C warmer than normal and about 40% wetter – 109mm instead of 78mm. Looking back at October last year, that month was 1.1°C colder than normal and the rainfall was even wetter than this year at 125mm. I recorded 41 hours of bright sunshine in October this year as opposed to only 13 hours in October last year. So it was not a bad month this year. The apple trees have not done very well this year. I have just looked up what weather conditions are said to favour a good apple harvest. They are a cold winter followed by a cool spring and summer with plenty of sunshine but also plenty of rain. Apple trees are said to thrive in regions where the temperature rarely rises above 32°C (90°F). Well we did not have a particularly cold winter or summer, the minimum in February was -4.5°C and the maximum in July was 30°C, so perhaps that is a partial explanation for the relatively poor crop. We did have an excellent crop of tomatoes but they were grown in the greenhouse. They were actually all grown from seeds taken from just two tomatoes that we bought from Sainsbury’s! In addition to a well ripened crop we were also left with plenty of green tomatoes and a few days ago I made 11 jars of chutney, made mainly from the green tomatoes, apples, sugar, raisins, spices and vinegar. The word chutney comes from India and we remember some extremely spicy chutneys from our time living in India. India is generally too warm for apples but ingredients such as coconut, mango and dates are used with a large variety of spices and mustard oil instead of vinegar. In the hill stations of southern India apples and tomatoes are also available. I apologise that this report does not say very much about the weather in October, but it was fairly unremarkable. Perhaps that is good in view of the predictions for more extreme weather resulting from global warming. Brian Brown

COURIER FRAUD SCAMS We have seen an increase recently in courier fraud related scams taking place across Derbyshire. It has been reported that victims have been receiving parcels, containing high value goods - such as an iPhone, followed by a second uniformed courier arriving shortly after, stating that the parcel has been delivered in error and collecting it back. The fraudsters on all occasions have taken out mobile phone contracts using the victim’s details, without their knowledge or consent. If you receive a package you cannot remember ordering, do not hand it over if a courier requests you to. You should check their credentials and call the company that they represent, to check if they are legitimate, and if they aren’t who they say they are then call the police. The next step would be to contact the retailer as soon as you can and arrange for the package to be sent back. If you are targeted by this scam, it’s a good idea to tell your bank as your details could be compromised and you may be a victim of identity theft. How to protect yourself against identity theft: Shred anything with your name, address or financial details before throwing it away. Do not reveal any security information - such as your password, login details or account numbers if you get an unsolicited email or call. Call your bank on an official number if you get an unsolicited call. Check your statements regularly and report any suspicious activity. Put your bills and financial details in a safe place out of view. Contact your bank if paper statements don’t arrive (if you’re expecting them). Redirect your post via Royal Mail, for a least a year, if you move property. Use a credit report checking service, to alert you to any key changes on your credit file. What to do if you have fallen victim to this scam We all make mistakes and these days the scams can be incredibly convincing. If you think you, or someone you know has been a victim of online fraud: Let your bank know what’s happened immediately. Report the offence to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via their website: www.actionfraud.police.uk. If you need to seek further advice you can contact us via one of the following methods: Facebook: send us a private message to /DerbyshireConstabulary Twitter: direct message our contact centre on @DerPolContact Website: complete the online contact form www.derbyshire.police.uk/Contact-Us. Phone: call us on 101. Please share this warning with friends and family so we can prevent anyone from falling victim. Cheryl Swan (Police, Comms and engagement officer, Force) 45

FRIENDS OF GILLFIELD WOOD Monday 6th December: “Swifts” our Christmas meeting, is an illustrated talk by John Ellicock. Lester Hartmann of the now famous “Peak Boxes” will be joining us with his specially designed Swift nest boxes. This is a great opportunity to find out more about the Totley Swift Group which has been running for two seasons and is an integral part of Friends of Gillfield Wood. At the moment this indoor meeting has been arranged to be in Totley Library at 7.30pm. This meeting is likely to be bookings only as we are limited to 30 attendees but we could be forced into making it a Zoom meeting so please check the website nearer the time if you are interested. Practical Conservation Mornings. From 10am for 2 to 3 hours on one Sunday in the month on an agreed date with the Sheffield City Council Ranger who attends our work mornings with appropriate tasks (light and heavy) and tools. We meet either at the Baslow Road bus terminus, the Scout Hut on Aldam Road, Totley or at the end of Totley Hall Lane. The work mornings are advertised on posters around Totley, in the local press and nearer the date are emailed out. Due to Covid precautions there are no drinks or biscuits provided so we recommend you bring along your own refreshments. If you are interested in helping us carry out such work in Gillfield Wood or have any questions, please contact fogwsecretary@gmail.com We may also arrange the occasional mid-week Conservation Morning where we will not have the help of a Council Ranger but will concentrate on tasks we can do independently. Here we are likely to meet at the Baslow Road bus terminus at 10.00am. Bring spade/shovel and rake if you have them/one. And gloves and flask. We will probably finish around 11.30 but feel free to come and go to suit. www.friendsofgillfieldwood.com For any clarification, please contact Paul Hancock via email: paulhancock1954@gmail.com Please check out and ‘like’ the Facebook page for “Friends of Gillfield Wood” There is also a Twitter feed: @GillfieldWood - please take a look !

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted. Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.
RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!
HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October. For further information, those who may be eligible should contact the Clerk to the Charity, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). 55

When the funfair came to Holmesfield! Pictured by J. Wilkinson on 23rd July 1949, Burrell steam traction engine No.3473 “Sally” is seen in the field which was adjacent to the Travellers Rest garage on Cartledge Lane and now occupied by 2 houses. Cedric Morris says that after a week in Holmesfield, the fair would spend a week in Millthorpe in the field behind the Royal Oak’s car park Timmy Ray and his son, Timmy junior, were both well-known showmen from Crich who travelled all over the Peak District with their amusement fair which included a steam roundabout and a carousel. After the death of his father in 1943, Timmy Ray junior continued the family tradition until his death in Chesterfield in 1982.
