HOLMESFIELD’S VILLAGE SOCIETY Happy December, I hope you are all staying safe and well. As I sit down to write this I’m so excited to reflect on the ‘Christmas in Holmesfield‘ events that have taken place so far this month. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers and supporters who have done so much to get our first set of events underway. Our amazing Christmas Tree, supplied by George Thompson, was erected in the Millennium Gardens on the 3rd December and the lights switched on by Lois Wilkinson-Pratt together with Gill and Bernard Hoare from the former Village Society committee. Huge thanks to Ian Wilkinson for his contribution to the event and also to the outgoing committee for all their work over many years. Of course high winds are never far from Holmesfield and always seem to arrive once the tree is up! However the tree is absolutely beautiful and is standing up to the weather. Huge thanks to the Christmas tree “engineers” (Alistair Fearnehough, John Stansfield, Steve Heald, Adam Kilner, Sarah Webb, John Roberts and Nick Wheat) who worked so hard to make it happen. Some of our younger villagers (and their grown ups) were treated to a fantastic time on Sunday 12th December when the Polar Express steamed into Holmesfield. The village hall became a cinema for the afternoon featuring a fresh popcorn stall, hotdogs and ice cream to create a real big screen movie atmosphere. Check out some of the photos on Facebook including our human Christmas tree who absolutely stole the show! My thanks go to all the families who supported the event – we hope you and your children enjoyed a really fun afternoon. We will definitely do more movie events and look forward to hearing your ideas for the films you would like to see. 15

By the time this edition of the magazine hits your doormats Santa will have been in his Grotto at The George & Dragon on the 19th December giving presents to over 40 children – this has been another sell-out event which has been really well received. Massive thanks to Debbie Blagden and her elves for organising Santa! We have also had Christmas carol singing in the Millennium Garden on the 19th December helped by Barry Fisher and sustained by Woodthorpe Hall’s hot mulled cider. Before I sign off; I want to thank so many volunteers who have contributed so much of their time, effort and energy to making ‘Christmas in Holmesfield’ 2021 a very special place to be. The Holmesfield Village Society would like to thank the following: Our wonderful sponsors for the Christmas lights: Ian Wilkinson at Weathervane, James Forbes at Oak Electrical Solutions and Nick McKee at Air Accessories Ltd (check out their adverts for details), plus of course Richard and Melissa for again kindly keeping the tree illuminated. Movie Night: Gemma, Luke and Dan of Screen Together (ScreenTogether@outlook. com), Celia Conroy for the Popcorn Cart (FaceBook @SimplySweetDelights). Santas Grotto & Carol Service: Dick Shepley and his family at Woodthorpe Hall for the mulled cider, Jeni, Sean and Andy at George & Dragon, Mandy & Mal at the Angel Inn and of course Father Christmas! And not forgetting our Wonderful Volunteers: Barry Fisher, Debbie Blagden, Alistair Fearnehough, Lois Wilkinson-Pratt, Gill & Bernard Hoare, Nick Wheat, Lucy Perry, Steve Heald, John Roberts, Eva & Nell Taylor, Jack Kilner, Holly Farrell. I am guaranteed to have forgotten someone (apologies if I have) – but massive thanks to everyone involved – we absolutely couldn’t do our society fund raising work in the village without your help. We are looking forward to having a break over Christmas after such a busy month and getting together again in the New Year to plan some really fun events for the village in 2022 – watch this space for more information, or to contribute ideas, email us at holmesfieldvillage@gmail.com keep an eye on www.facebook.com/groups/holmesfield #loveholmesfield. In the meantime, I hope you, your families and loved ones have a very Merry Christmas and all our best wishes for a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year. We look forward to seeing you in 2022! Big Love….Helen and The Holmesfield Village Society Team 17

DO YOU KNOW WHERE TO REPORT SCAM MESSAGES? Fake emails and text messages are a common tactic used by cyber criminals, their goal is often to convince you to click a link. Once clicked, you may be sent to a dodgy website which could download viruses onto your computer, or steal your passwords and personal information In order to try and convince you that their messages are legitimate, criminals will pretend to be someone you trust, or from some organisation you trust. This could be your Internet Service Provider (ISP), local council, even a friend in need. And they may contact you by phone call, email or text message. Reporting suspicious emails: If you have received an email which you’re not quite sure about, you can report it by forwarding the email to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service at: report@phishing.gov.uk As of 31st October 2021, the number of suspicious email reports stands at more than 8,100,000, with the removal of more than 67,000 scams and 124,000 URLs. 21

HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP Well, it looks like we are facing into another strange Christmas! And whilst there is a lot of noise about the latest variant, to date it appears that the numbers of patients admitted to Chesterfield Royal Hospital are steady. At the time of writing 18 had been admitted in the last 7 days but the number was down -21.7%. As a county the numbers are up in terms of those who have had both the vaccine and the boosters. 92.6% have had the 1st, 88.2% the 2nd and 69.3% the 3rd (Source: coronavirus.data. gov.uk). If you do want to get your booster you can now book your appointment online at www.nhs.uk/book-a-coronavirus-vaccination This can be a hard time of the year for people, particularly if family and friends can’t get together. Many people have said that the community spirit in Holmesfield is so much tighter since the pandemic started. It’s not over yet so if you do need that little bit of help or just someone to talk to maybe contact your buddy or volunteers, just do a quick check in on them. If you are new to the village please contact us via the WhatsApp Admin for Holmesfield Support Group on 07711772058 if you would like to be included in the group. HOLMESFIELD MARKET UPDATE December has always set the Holmesfield Local Market team a few challenges, one being the weather, and this year’s market was no exception to that! Despite the driving wind, rain and pure cold, you all showed up in great numbers to support this market that has really become a part of our community. Last year was a bit of a disaster for the market team so to see so many people throughout the morning and into the afternoon was a huge relief! It was the first time we had some of the stall holders cancel at last minute (some for legitimate reasons), but despite this, over 30 stallholders showed up on the day and for that we are truly grateful! Unfortunately, one of the last-minute retreats was the bread stall but Kirste Farrell picked up the baton and in a short time procured the supplies and managed the bread stall with her nephew, Charlie Boland. The funds raised from the bread stall were donated to the village. The veg stall also contributes to the village funds and this time round we had the fab duo of Vicky and Jo managing the stall. They kindly donated their time to supporting the village and were particularly grateful for our new market tent! 23

There was a great buzz in the village hall where our homegrown talent, Katie Ward, delighted the visitors with her rendition of some famous Christmas tunes. Katie was so good that quite a few people thought they were listening to ‘a recording’. It takes guts for a young lady to stand up in her local hall and sing so well done Katie, you did a fantastic job. We also need to thank everyone who supported the raffle and those who donated prizes for the raffle, Hedgerow preserves, Jakes Eville Christmas Trees, For the Love of Bags, Drone Valley Brewery, and the hamper donated by Holmesfield Market. Finally, a big thanks to all our volunteers without whom it would be impossible to host the event! Just to remind you, the market team have produced Holmesfield Local Market bags which are available at the Angel Inn for £4. As always, all profits that the Local Market team make are used for the running of the market and to support our communities in Holmesfield and Millthorpe.

Finally, don’t forget our future market dates so please put them in your diary now: Saturday 2nd April, 2nd July, 1st October and 3rd December. There is nothing left to say except to have a fantastic and safe Christmas with best wishes for the New Year. Regards Aoife, on behalf of the Holmesfield Local Market team and the Support Group. 25

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL Dear friends of Penny Acres Primary School, As another year draws to a close, amidst new Covid guidelines and further restrictions, here at Penny Acres Primary School it has been business as usual. From ‘Lights, Camel, Action’ trips to Chesterfield for our younger children, Christmas dinner and party games, it has been fabulous giving the children some sense of normality and being able to do the things that were missed so much last year. Our fabulous school continues to go from strength to strength with many new families seeking places for next year – we look forward to welcoming them all to our Penny Acres family. Next year already looks as though it will be a busy one with exciting new topics planned and visits out booked. Here’s hoping that further restrictions don’t get in the way of us enhancing the curriculum as we do so well. In the meantime, stay safe and enjoy making memories with family and friends. Thank you all for your continued support in these challenging times. Kindest thoughts and prayers, Mr Ratcliffe – Executive Headteacher. Federation of Penny Acres and Wigley Primary Schools. NOVEMBER 2021 WEATHER We are now into December and the official start of winter. That said, the last week of November could lay a very good claim to have been very much like winter. The last weekend of the month was very cold with a maximum temperature of only 2.8°C and a minimum of -2.3°C. On these two days, and the following Monday, storm Arwen produced about three inches of lying snow. To have three days of snow in November is quite unusual, occurring about once every ten years. However, we were quite fortunate with the weather because Scotland and the north east of England had both the snow and very strong winds. As I write this report there are still many people in parts of the UK without electricity and heating. My weather statistics for November were an average temperature of 7.3°C with a maximum of 14.3°C on the 13th and a minimum of -2.3°C on the 28th. I recorded 55mm of rain which is only about 60% of normal, but my rain gauge does not record the snow that tends to get blown away and so does not get recorded. Even though we had the very cold final week of November the average temperature for the month was just over half a degree warmer than normal. So far, 2021 has been very slightly warmer than average. Comparing temperatures with an average can be quite misleading. I make comparisons with the average temperature since I got my first weather station in 2002. The Met Office maintain a very long record of Central England Temperatures (CET) and this shows that the average over the past 20 years has been 0.7 of a degree warmer than the previous 80 years. The CET record goes back to 1659 and claims to be the longest record in the world. In recent years it has used the average from three weather stations that are representative of central England. These are at Stonyhurst in Lancashire, Pershore in Worcestershire and Rothhamsted in Hertfordshire. However, there is a significant problem with these three stations in that there has been increasing urban development around them over the last few decades and it is well known that towns generate heat. Since 1974 the Met Office has made an adjustment of -0.2°C to try to compensate for this urban heating effect but some people think that this is not sufficient. I was interested in this and so a few years ago, when visiting Australia, we went to Cape Leeuwin which is the most westerly point of SW Australia. There is a weather station there that is on a very isolated part of the coast and so most unlikely to have been affected by urban warming. The weather record there also shows a rise of about 0.4°C over the last 20 years. Brian Brown 39

THEFT OF CATALYTIC CONVERTERS Did you know a thief can take the catalytic converter from your car in a matter of minutes and leave you to foot the bill? Precious metals such as rhodium, platinum and palladium are used in catalytic converters. The price of some of these metals has risen sharply in recent years and as a result has led to an increase in the theft of catalytic convertors. Cars that are most often targeted are hybrid vehicles, as these vehicles have two power sources, so the catalytic converter is used less frequently. The metals are less likely to corrode, meaning they are worth more and therefore more attractive to thieves. Hybrid cars, Vans and SUV’s are particularly at risk, as the ride height makes access to the exhaust system beneath them easier. The Toyota Prius, Toyota Auris, Honda Jazz and the Honda CR-V are often targeted in Derbyshire. To reduce the risk of having your catalytic converter stolen, you should: • Park your car in a locked garage where possible, but if this isn’t an option, then park it in a well-lit and well-populated area • Park close to fences, walls or a kerb with the exhaust being closest to the fence, wall or kerb to make the theft more difficult • Avoid parking your vehicle half on the pavement and half on the road, as this may make it easier for thieves to access the catalytic converter • If there is a fleet of vehicles, park the low clearance vehicles to block the high clearance vehicles. This will obstruct access underneath • If parking in a public car park, consider parking alongside other cars and facing your bonnet towards the wall if possible. With the catalytic converter positioned at the front of your vehicle, this will make it harder for thieves to get close enough to steal it • For thefts occurring on driveways, consider the use of a Secured by Design (SBD) approved driveway alarm and sensor. This may assist in alerting you of a potential intruder entering your driveway or garden • Alternatively, you can mark your catalytic converter. Please ensure any property marking is Secured by Design (SBD) approved • You can even purchase a ‘cage clamp’ which is a cage device that locks in around the converter to make it more difficult to remove. Toyota are offering a ‘Catloc’ for the Prius (3rd generation, 2009-2011 models) and Auris (2nd generation, 2012-2018 models). Please contact your Toyota dealership for more information • Speak to your dealership about the possibility of installing a Thatcham approved alarm and tilt sensor that will activate the alarm should any thief try to jack the vehicle up to steal the converter If you see someone acting suspiciously under a vehicle, report it to the Police. Obtain as much information as possible, including any vehicle registrations You can contact us via any of the below methods:Facebook – send us a private message to /DerbyshireConstabulary Twitter – direct message our contact centre on @DerPolContact Website – complete the online contact form www.derbyshire.police.uk/ContactUs Phone – call us on 101. 45

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted. Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October. For further information, those who may be eligible should contact the Clerk to the Charity, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). 47

HOLMESFIELD BYGONES

Landlord Fred Elliott is pictured with various customers outside the Travellers Rest c.1905. The pub is probably in a near original state and it was to undergo several extensions as seen in the picture on the right in the 1950s. A new toilet black was added soon after the later photo, and as a Thai restaurant, it was extended further to include a new dining area on the left.
