POLICE REPORT TO PARISH COUNCIL PCSO Jonathan Flower attended the February meeting. Crimes for January 2022 include a shed burglary, one public order offence and two vehicle crimes. A Holmesfield estate walkabout took place on the 19th January, representatives attended from the Police, Rykneld Homes and the Parish Council. Warning letters have been sent to vehicle owners parking on the pavement at the top of Cowley Lane and the matter has been passed to parking enforcement at North East Derbyshire District Council. Councillors sought updates on parking issues at Millthorpe and outside Penny Acres school. The pavement area outside the school is often impassable thereby forcing pedestrians into the road.

HOLMESFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH A Neighbourhood Watch meeting will be held on Monday 7th March, 8pm to 9pm in Holmesfield village hall. Everyone welcome! Please contact Sally Marples-Shaw if you have any questions: Tel: 07930 430044 – Email: sallyannms@icloud.com

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Wednesday 9th March in Holmesfield Village Hall on Vicarage Close.

SPEEDWATCH SCHEME VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED Dronfield Safer Neighbourhood Team are looking for volunteers to get involved in our Speedwatch scheme as part of our joint response to concerns raised by residents in relation to Speeding across the area of Dronfield and surrounding rural villages. The scheme helps remind drivers about there driving habits especially in relation to speeding and gives a reminder locally as volunteers check vehicle speeds in location that have been raised a concern by residents or visitors to the area. There are a number of groups running across Dronfield and surrounding rural villages and they work hard to link in with other agencies including Derbyshire’s Casualty Reduction Enforcement Support Team (Crest) or other partner agencies If anyone would like any further information or like to volunteer please contact Dronfield Safer Neighbourhood Team or email Jonathan.flower@derbyshire.police.uk 15

16

DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM January crime figures: Theft: 1, Burglary: 1, Violence against the person: 1. Speeding remains a concern and we are seeking more volunteers for Speedwatch, and now restrictions have started to open up, it would be good to see the group out more often. Dronfield SNT will continue to work with the enforcement team to frequent the village in the near future. The work with the school and speeding remains an ongoing project in which drivers are educated about there behaviour. One issue that has been raised in respect of parking near the Rutland pub close to the junction with Cowley Lane and Main Road, Holmesfield. We recently conducted an estate walk with Rykneld Homes, Holmesfield Parish Council and ourselves. This will happen more throughout the year and would be great for residents to attend as well. PCSO 12853 Jonathan Flower, Dronfield SNT E-mail: Jonathan.flower@derbyshire.police.uk

HOLMESFIELD CHARITABLE TRUSTS The trustees of the Penny Acres Charitable Trusts are asking everyone if they know why we have our Trusts and who they are for ? We are very fortunate in Holmesfield to have three Charitable trusts which are open to application by anyone living in Holmesfield. The revenue for the Trusts comes from land donated in the 18th century on Cowley lane and later donations which are owned by the Charity Commission on behalf of the Penny Acres Charity. The Trust supports the ‘Educational Foundation‘ which is open to anyone age 25 or under who, or whose parents are residents in the village. Over a period of many years grants have been awarded for the purchase of books and more recently towards computers and sports equipment. The Trust receives regular applications and the Trustees are keen to encourage more applications to the ‘Relief in Need Charitable Trust’ and feel the old fashion Victorian wording of the Trust may be putting people off making an application. The remit of the Charity is to relieve hardship, need and distress – a very old fashioned way of saying that these days, life can be difficult as the cost of living is increasing. Anyone over 60 who is a resident of Holmesfield can apply and there is no means test applied. For further information, please contact the clerk to the charities. Mrs Geraldine Austen on 0114 289 0686. All applications are dealt with in strict confidence 17

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL As always, this term has been a busy one and Christmas seems many moons ago! Our Key stage two children blasted off to the National Space Centre for the day as part of their topic ‘Out of this world’. A fabulous day was had by all with the highlight being the planetarium visit. A worthwhile day out if you’ve not been before! Our KS2 parents were treated to a clarinet concert, unfortunately outside due to Covid restrictions. Our children discovered how difficult it was to play the clarinet with cold fingers as the snow began to fall. Even so, they sounded amazing as always and it was a great opportunity to show what we’ve been learning in school. Our Infant children attended a gymnastics event at Graves Leisure Centre and again, a superb time was had by all with a highlight being the professional grade trampolines. On another day, school played host to a wisdom of owls. The children were able to see these birds up close and hear about their habitats, hunting techniques and anatomy. Seeing owls flying around the classroom was like a scene from Hogwarts and certainly something to remember. I’m sure that next term will be as busy and we look forward to sharing some of our experiences with you. Until then, stay safe. Kindest thoughts and prayers, Mr Ratcliffe – Executive Headteacher. Federation of Penny Acres and Wigley Primary Schools. Penny Acres: 0114 2890330

HOLMESFIELD YOUTH CLUB Glow! continues to thrive, welcoming young people from Holmesfield each Monday at St Swithin’s church hall 6.30-8.30pm. We are an inclusive youth group for all secondary aged young people whatever their circumstances. This month we have secured a grant from the Dronfield and District Rotary Club to take 16 young people to an activity centre in Pleasley during the Easter holidays - further information will be available in due course. If you or your business would like to sponsor an activity day in the summer holidays I would be glad to have a chat with you! Thanks also to all those who offered to help me with wheels for the football table, we’re now sorted. For further information about Glow! contact Sarah on 0792 958 2233.

NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL Our District Councillor, Bentley Stafford-Stephenson, attended the February Parish Council meeting and reported that the District Council budget has been set. Council tax will be rising by 2.58% which equates to approximately £5.00 for a Band D property. The Local Plan has been voted through and set the future framework for the district. There are no proposals to develop greenbelt land within Holmesfield. The swimming pool at Eckington has re-opened following a £1.5m refurbishment and plans are now imminent to replace Sharley Park Leisure Centre with a new community hub including leisure centre, health provision and support services. There are currently two funding streams available. The first is Community Action Grants of up to £500 available to community groups in the district for projects that support residents to tackle local issues in the area; this round will also consider applications from community-led groups to purchase additional trees to support the Queen’s Green Canopy. The second is Visitor Grants of up to £2000 for local businesses to adapt, recover and rebuild in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Business grants are available to support the development of valuable digital assets such as online booking systems, updated websites and cashless payment facilities. Derbyshire has been chosen as a pathfinder for the Government levelling up white paper. There have been a number of planning issues including a significant price rise in the cost of water testing for properties not connected to the mains. There are lots of upcoming events for the Chairman’s Appeal including an Elvis event and special visit to Renishaw Hall. 29

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB

Welcome to 2022. Looking through the window as the storms batter us, it’s hard to believe it’s only 8 weeks to the start of the coming new season! Following on from last year’s highly successful season, we are looking forward to what will be a challenging, but hopefully even a better year. The 1st eleven will play in the Derbyshire 2nd division, the highest standard we have reached in the history of the club. Hopes are high as we have not only retained all the players from last season but also strengthened the squad with the addition of Jack Snelling who is joining us from Hallam’s 1st team in Sheffield. We are looking at recruiting at least one more player before the season start – watch this space. Many of our juniors who played last season, will also be looking to secure a regular spot in the 1st team so good luck to them as well.

Development: Over the winter we have been trying to secure planning permission to enable us to extend our facilities by the installation of a new timber framed club house adjacent to the existing one. This would give us much needed additional space whilst also allowing us to create better changing facilities for everyone concerned. This is particularly important now we have a lady’s team as well as the ever-increasing requirements placed upon clubs with junior changing and segregation. Unfortunately, we have met some resistance from the planners, this despite overwhelming support from the local community. We have submitted additional information for the planners to review and hopefully we will get a positive outcome! If you have passed the ground recently you may have noticed that a new gate has been installed, this will allow easier access and egress from the ground. Unfortunately, the mirror installed last year to view oncoming traffic has been hit and smashed, this will be replaced before the start of the season. Further development of the ground and facilities will take place over the coming months, and we look forward to keeping you updated as these progress.

Junior Cricket: Further opportunities for junior cricket will be available this year with the introduction of the Dynamos Programme for 8 – 11-year-olds. This will run alongside the All Stars programme 5 – 8-year-olds, which proved a great success last year. The programmes will run from 20th May through to 8th July. If you would like your child to attend, then please contact Jimmy Pearson on 0780 328 8200 / jimmypeo@hotmail.com In addition to the two programmes we are running the following junior teams this year: U9s soft ball; U11s hard ball; U13s; 3 x U15s. Please let us know if your child would like to join any of the teams. Coaching will start on Friday nights in May – Date to be confirmed. 35

News: We are pleased to announce that a Defibrillator has been

purchased and installed at the ground. At the same time we have installed a mobile phone dish to ensure that a phone signal will be available at the ground. Special thanks to Councillor Angelique Foster for a generous grant of £1,350 towards the purchase and installation cost of the equipment.

100 Club: Following the fantastic support, we received last year from everybody, we are looking to try and beat the membership total of 256. If you would like to support us again or know anybody who would like to join, please fill in the form and send back to Tony Brown or Jimmy Pearson. Alternatively, if your details have not changed then simply send the money along with your name. Last year’s five lucky winners were: Andy Timms, Boris Novikovs, Simon Billing, Simon Welch, Vinney Fieldsend.

AQUAPHOBIA COACHING Aquaphobia - Do you feel comfortable in and around water? Can you go underwater or in deep water without feeling nervous? If just thinking about these questions makes you feel anxious, you are not alone. Over 14 million people in the UK today feel exactly the same way as you do right now. We all know the benefits swimming can have on our health and well-being and how isolating it can be if you don’t swim and help is now at hand. North East Derbyshire District Council understand that a fear of water (Aquaphobia) is real and needs specialist, non-judgemental 1-2-1 coaching with an Advanced Aquaphobia coach who will teach you how to manage your fear so you enjoy the water. This is not a usual swimming lesson, our sessions are tailor made for you and run at your pace. We take you back to the basics of swimming and are with you, in the water, every step of the way. And age is no barrier, young or old, all are welcome. So if it’s for health reasons, social inclusion, family time, or whatever the reason, why wait? Sessions are being planned for Dronfield Sports Centre. If you would like more information or to book a Personal Ability Range review session please email: stephen.birds@ne-derbyshire.gov.uk

TO ALL DOG OWNERS Dog fouling issues are the worst they have ever been in Holmesfield. Most people take poo bags out with them and remove it, but others give all dog owners a bad name by leaving it. The irresponsible ones do not use poo bags, they go out under the cover of darkness and think picking it up does not apply to them. Some go out in broad daylight and leave a mess on footpaths used by the children on their way to school. It is not in one particular place but in several areas in the village. The small minority of dog owners who do not clean up after their dog are putting children at risk of serious illness. It is not nice to step in it, push a wheelchair through it, drive a mobility scooter through it or worse fall in it. REMINDER: It is against the law to allow a dog to foul in a public place and make no attempt to clean it up. The maximum penalty from a criminal prosecution in a court may be £1,000. Please keep Holmesfield dog poo clean. 43

JANUARY 2022 WEATHER This January was slightly warmer than usual with a mean temperature of 4.6°C – about half a degree above normal – and on New Year’s day the temperature rose to 12.8°C. However, the month was much more unusual in being very dry and very sunny. The total rainfall was little more than half of what we expect and indeed, after the first week, we had almost no rainfall. We had 19 days when we saw some sunshine and about 80 hours of bright sunshine over the whole month. All this nice weather was the result of a large high pressure anticyclone that stayed with us for most of the second, third and fourth weeks of the month. The Met Office said that in England and Wales it was the ninth driest January and the third sunniest January since their records began in 1862. My weather station had a hiccup on the 26th of the month when it started to report that the temperature outside was rising up to 70°C! It was three days before I was able to replace part of the station and start getting some rather more sensible readings. Fortunately, I was able to contact a friend in Bradway and get the readings from his weather station. Bradway is about 200ft lower than Holmesfield so the average temperatures will be about half a degree warmer than we are but otherwise his readings will not be very different from mine. A hiccup from rather further away was recorded by my weather station on Saturday 15th January at 7pm. I recorded a positive blip in my atmospheric pressure record and Paul Hudson, the weatherman on Look North, also noted this and said that it arose from the eruption of the underwater volcano near the Islands of Tonga in the Pacific. The volcano pushed upwards into the atmosphere and caused a shockwave, or pressure wave, that then travelled outwards, like the ripple in a pond when a stone is dropped into the water. This shockwave occurred 14 hours before my weather station recorded a small but rapid rise in atmospheric pressure. It had travelled at about 700 mph in an easterly direction, over North America, to cover the 10,000 miles from Tonga in the Pacific to Holmesfield. I recorded a second blip a few hours later, this having travelled rather further to reach us in a westerly direction over Asia and Europe. Brian Brown

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted. Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October. For further information, those who may be eligible should contact the Clerk to the Charity, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). 51

A timeless image of Horsleygate Road c.1910 where the road begins its long winding climb to Horsleygate Lane and onward to Owler Bar. The legend W.H.H. denotes that this image is the work of the celebrated Dronfield photographer, Walter “Harry” Hewitt who supplemented his work as a timekeeper at Lucas’s spade and shovel works on Dronfield Bottom by selling his photographs of local views as postcards. He also recorded notable events in the Dronfield area.
