POLICE REPORT TO PARISH COUNCIL PCSO Jonathan Flower attended the last Parish Council meeting. Crimes for February 2022 include two theft, one criminal damage and three burglary. There is going to be a crime prevention event in April, this will focus on outdoor spaces and a number of shed alarms will be available for members of the public. The Estate Walkabouts are to be held with more notice so that they can be advertised in advance in good time. Residents are reminded that the Police are not able to use the ‘Holmesfield Watch’ WhatsApp group so any reported crimes and incidents must be reported direct to them. DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM February crime figures: Theft: 2(+1), Criminal Damage: 1(+1), Burglary: 3(+2). Over the last month, Dronfield Safer Neighbourhood Team have been engaging with the community and visitors to the area in relation to SNT Policing Priorities which have come about from speaking with the community on patrols, public events, attending public meetings such as Parish or Town Council Meetings. This has been along with completing Derbyshire talking surveys to gather views and opinions on issues affecting you. HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP Quiet a few people have approached the support group asking whether people in the village would be interested in getting together and discussing the potential taking in Ukrainian Refugees. There has been quiet a lot of publicity around the government scheme. Below is an extract from BBC news, the full article can be found at: www.bbc.com/news/60735121 Anyone in the UK - of any nationality, providing they have at least six months leave to remain in the UK - can apply to be a host through the government website. You have to be able to host the refugees in your own home or in another property, for at least six months. Charities, businesses and community groups will also be able to apply. Those offering to house refugees will be vetted by the government and Ukrainian applicants will also undergo security checks before being matched with a host. There will be more detailed guidance on the checks in the coming days. The government says there will be no cap or upper limit on the number of Ukrainians who can come under the scheme. The most up to date information can be found on the government website homesforukraine.campaign.gov.uk If people are interested in getting together to discuss the formation of a support group for refugees and hosts in the village, there will be a meeting on Monday 4th April, in the George & Dragon, Holmesfield, 7:30pm to 8.30pm. HOLMESFIELD MARKET UPDATE The local Market team have been busy again and we look forward to welcoming you all to the market on Saturday 2nd April, our second market since we came out of lockdown. We are delighted to welcome back the regular stalls including the bread and veg stall - all profits from these stalls goes to supporting activities in the village. We also have quiet a few new stalls, including Cocoa Spink - an Artisan handmade chocolate company from Sheffield. It’s also great to welcome back Millthorpe Nursery who will be at the front of the Angel with a selection of spring and summer plants as well as some expert advice from Carl and Deirdre Leaman. THERE IS MORE THAN ENOUGH Springtime reminds us of the amazing capacity of the Earth to renew itself. Right now we see before our eyes a superabundance of new life emerging from the soil, bushes, trees, ponds, woodland and farmland. We are so used to it, we just take it for granted. With the amazing skills and hard graft of farmers, scientists, engineers, and many others, we have been given the tools to ensure that the bounty of creation means we have plenty. There is more than enough. Many of us in Holmesfield (but by no means all) know this to be true in our own lives. We don’t have to worry about food, clothes, transport. In fact there seems to be a superabundance of material goods and much more besides in Holmesfield right now. It is okay for us to have plenty - God wants to bless us out of the abundance of his provision. But there comes a problem when our plenty comes at the expense of others. We should stop and ask questions if the number of Ferraris multiply at the same rate as food banks. If we stop and realise that there is more than enough our clamour for more will begin to fade. We will become more satisfied with our portion. But if we don’t stop and reflect on these things we will get caught in the never satisfying cycle of acquisition. You would think, for example, that if you were president of the biggest country in the world, you’d be satisfied. But no, Vladimir Putin wants to expand his massive country into Ukraine, and this clamour for more has led to such devastating loss of life and damage to homes, hospitals, civic life and businesses. We should do all we can to help the Ukrainians. Can I encourage you this Spring to just pause. Take a walk. Look out of the window. Consider the new life emerging before your eyes. It comes anew each year, a free gift, enough for all. In the words of Jesus: “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’… But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Every blessing, Rev. HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION At our March meeting, Mr. Forrow returned to present the second half of his talk on the Gardening year. Not only did he show excellent slides of his own garden but even better slides of many famous gardens such as Harlow Carr, Kew, Wisley, Chelsea and Hardwick Hall. On Wednesday 6th April Catherine Nuttgens, Sheffield City Council’s Forestry Manager will be our speaker. On Wednesday 4th May at 6.30 pm there are two garden visits arranged. The first visit is to Mrs. Eva Burton’s garden at 58 Melbourne Avenue, Dronfield Woodhouse, S18 8YW and also next door at No. 60. From there we will visit Jane and Robin Greetham’s garden at 2 Morley Close, Dronfield Woodhouse, S18 8YQ where refreshments will be provided. There is a charge of £4 and visitors will need their own transport. The garden association trip this year will be on Thursday 9th June by coach from Holmesfield to RHS Bridgewater in Salford (see advert for details). All our meetings take place at 7.30.pm at Holmesfield Village Hall except in the Summer when visits to various gardens are arranged, and while we continue under Covid restrictions, members and visitors will be asked to pay £2.00 for each attendance. HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL Despite only being a few weeks into the new term, as always our children have been very busy. Our KS1 children enjoyed another visit to Graves Leisure Centre, this time for some team games against other schools. Our usual competitive selves prevailed resulting in a strong performance from all involved. On Wednesday 2nd March, we took our KS2 children to the annual B. Braun street dance competition. Despite only five weeks of rehearsals, our children wowed the crowd (as well as the judges) resulting in a well-deserved 3rd place. Another trophy to add to our collection! All of our children have been thoroughly enjoying our gymnastics work on Tuesday afternoons. All children, from all year groups, make use of the fabulous facilities at Graves Leisure Centre. From beam work to trampolines, parallel bars to vaults, we’re doing it all with smiles on our faces. KS2 had a virtual tour of Mars as part of their space topic learning many new facts about the red planet. A few are even hoping to live there in the future! A huge thank you must go to Chelsea Strafford-Stephenson, a member of our governing body who, in conjunction with local charities, helped to organise a relief programme to help the people of Ukraine. As always, the response from our local community was astounding with donations of non-perishable foods, nappies, toiletries, small toys, feminine hygiene products and many other things coming in thick and fast. We filled the school office four times over, resulting in MANY car loads of items. My sincere thanks to everybody involved, particularly the children that chose to make their own donations. Our workshop this month is at Holmesfield Village Hall on Wednesday 20th April from 7.30pm. Come along to our workshop this month where we will be creating envelopes bursting with flowers. A lovely gift you can give to someone dear. All you need to bring is some Oasis foam, a few flowers such as roses, lisianthus, or alstroemeria and some small leaf greenery to create your masterpiece. HOLMESFIELD YOUTH CLUB Glow! youth club continues to thrive in our village thanks to our volunteers and financial supporters. Extreme Wheels Roadshows have been excellent at engaging with our young people and have brought some interesting things for us to do indoors during the dark winter nights - indoor karts, laser quest, pogo sticks, slack-lining to name a few. However, their time with us is coming to an end as they go back to working outdoors in other Derbyshire communities. In order to continue opening weekly after Easter we need volunteers from the community prepared to step in and be on an occasional rota working alongside our regular volunteers. If you enjoy being around young people or would prefer to staff the tuck shop and supply the other volunteers coffee and you have a couple of hours on a Monday night once a month or so, please contact me to find out more about being an ‘occasional helper’ at Glow! If you have a DBS certificate from your employer or something else you do it’s a bonus but if not, we can talk about it. Without your support our young people will go back to having Glow! monthly. HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL LOTTERY APPEAL Dear residents of Holmesfield A lot of you are aware of the Penny Acres Lottery that I have now run for almost 10 years! Over this time I have seen many people join the lottery and sadly a few leave either due to people passing or mostly moving house or their connections to school breaking as the children move on to big school, but as it is now renewal time for members, I would like to take this opportunity to remind or inform people that you do not have to have a child at school to be a member or even live in the village!!! Many members have no ties to the school but still have some numbers in the lottery. Of course parents of school children are often members along with grand parents and relatives but this is open to everyone. The draw each month is the lottery pot divided up with 10% to the runner up and 45% awarded to the winner drawn out by the school children and 45% of the pot going to school towards equipment and trips etc. The more members the bigger the pot of winnings and as it is now renewal time for members I thought I would reach out and hopefully encourage new members to get on board! Each number is £1 per month, usually renewed on a 6 or 12 monthly basis, with no limit on how many numbers you may have. We will walk to Churchdale Hall then through Cracknowl Wood to Bakewell, before heading back via the river to Ashford where we will have lunch (optional). HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB

As the start of an exciting season approaches, the club has received some disappointing news. The proposed additional club house facilities will have its planning permission rejected. This is despite backing from the local community, Derbyshire Cricket and Sport England. Although we have yet to receive official confirmation of the decision, an email from the planner states that he is recommending ‘Refusal’. Although the club is located within the Green Belt we felt that the proposal would be passed as it is essential to the club’s development and the need to abide by ever increasing requirements to provide facilities for all age groups and genders. We will be reviewing our options once the final decision has been agreed but most likely we will be ‘Appealing’ the decision. The Coming Season: Planning aside, the club is very excited about the coming season, with yet further opportunities for all to participate. In addition to the 3 senior teams we ran last year, we have now entered a fourth team in the Derbyshire Development League. This will give further opportunities for juniors and seniors who wish to participate in some competitive cricket with the development of players being its main function rather than winning at all costs. League games start for the senior teams on Saturday 23rd April with the 1st XI travelling to Quardon and the 2nd XI hosting Staveley Welfare. It’s a 1.00pm start if you wish to come and support us. The following week sees the 1st XI at home against Clowne Town (12.30pm start), whilst the 2nd XI have a short trip to Chesterfield. Sunday 1st May sees the first of the Ladies’ fixtures with a ‘double header’ at home against Wellbeck and Riddings. The matches commence at 11.00am and 3.00pm respectively. The development league is due to start on Sunday 8th May. We are still awaiting confirmation of dates for the junior games.. Junior Cricket: Just a reminder that junior cricket will be available this year with the introduction of the Dynamos Programme for 8 to 11 year-olds. This will run alongside the All Stars programme for 5 to 8 year-olds which proved a great success last year. The programmes will run from 20th May to 8th July. FRIENDS OF GILLFIELD WOOD Saturday 23th April. From 8.30am, our second bird walk of the year with Chris Measures and team. Leaving from Totley Hall Lane, we’ll be looking for our Spring visitors and might even catch an early Swift! Wear suitable clothing and footwear as it could be muddy. Monday 25th April. From 7.30pm in Totley Library: A short Annual General Meeting will be followed by an illustrated talk by Ben Keywood, an Entomologist working with Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust. The talk is called the Fall and Rise of Sheffield’s butterflies and covers the changing populations and distribution of butterflies in our area, covering what we know from Edwardian and Victorian collectors and the impact from environmental change such as loss of habitat and air quality. We will also look at the state of butterflies in the present day and what to expect for the future. Please note that at present, this talk is planned to go ahead in Totley Library, but check either the website or email: fogwsecretary@gmail.com to confirm and book a place by email to the address above, but members will have priority. Practical Conservation Mornings. From 10am for 2 to 3 hours on one Sunday in the month on an agreed date with the Sheffield City Council Ranger who attends our work mornings with appropriate tasks (light and heavy) and tools. We meet either at the Baslow Road bus terminus, the Scout Hut on Aldam Road, Totley or at the end of Totley Hall Lane. The work mornings are advertised on posters around Totley, in the local press and nearer the date are emailed out. Due to Covid precautions there are no drinks or biscuits provided so we recommend you bring along your own refreshments. HOLMESFIELD CHARITABLE TRUSTS The trustees of the Penny Acres Charitable Trusts are asking everyone if they know why we have our Trusts and who they are for ? We are very fortunate in Holmesfield to have three Charitable trusts which are open to application by anyone living in Holmesfield. The revenue for the Trusts comes from land donated in the 18th century on Cowley lane and later donations which are owned by the Charity Commission on behalf of the Penny Acres Charity. The Trust supports the ‘Educational Foundation‘ which is open to anyone age 25 or under who, or whose parents are residents in the village. Over a period of many years grants have been awarded for the purchase of books and more recently towards computers and sports equipment. The Trust receives regular applications and the Trustees are keen to encourage more applications to the ‘Relief in Need Charitable Trust’ and feel the old fashion Victorian wording of the Trust may be putting people off making an application. The remit of the Charity is to relieve hardship, need and distress – a very old fashioned way of saying that these days, life can be difficult as the cost of living is increasing. Anyone over 60 who is a resident of Holmesfield can apply and there is no means test applied. FEBRUARY 2022 WEATHER As I write this in the early days of March, the air is calm, the sun is shining and the sky is blue. However, February was certainly not a calm month. The calmest day that I recorded was the 27th but even then I recorded winds of up to 20mph. On the 16th I recorded 57mph and on the 21st, 56mph. These winds arose from storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin that caused damage in many parts of the UK. On the 17th, storm Eunice caused us to abandon Devon, where we had been staying for a few days, as winds of more than 80mph were forecast for the following day over much of south and south-west England. Storm Dudley had struck a few days earlier but it had affected the far north and Scotland much more than Derbyshire. We were relatively lucky in Holmesfield. That said, on the 19th, we woke up to about 1 inch of snow and the temperature stayed at about 1°C all day with some snow and rain. Winter was still with us. My recorded gusts of up to 57mph are lower than the Met Office reports but that will be in part because my anemometer is on a pole about 15ft high. Wind is meant to be recorded at about 30ft (10m is the standard). There is a very approximate formula to correct for the height and using this the wind at the top of a 30ft pole would have been over 70mph. The other unusual aspect of the weather in February was the temperature. This was about one and a half degrees warmer than usual and the rainfall that was more than twice the norm. I recorded 160mm (6 inches). However, I also receive the weather reports from the weather station in Weston Park in Sheffield and 192mm was recorded there – three times their normal. It is unusual for my weather station to record less rainfall than Weston Park. It is possible that more rain fell in Sheffield during February than in Holmesfield, but it is more likely that my reading was low because the unrelenting wind swept the rain over the top of my rain gauge and so some rain was not collected. The effect is similar to the Brian Brown way in which we shelter close to a hedge on wet windy days.

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted. Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. The legend W.H.H. shows us that this is another evocative image from the lens of the celebrated Dronfield photographer, Walter “Harry” Hewitt. The location is of course instantly recognisable and quite topical given the extensive roadworks currently taking place here ! The large pub sign tells us that the landlady is Harriett Haslam who inherited the former beer house after the death of her father William in 1904.
