Within the area he has been dealing with housing and noise issues in Barlow and reported that the planning issues at Brindwood House are to be dealt with via a public inquiry, the timescale for the proceedings is not yet known. There have been ongoing issues with fly-tipping in rural locations, a number of documents with names and addresses have been found within the waste and these have been passed to the police for investigation; the use of mobile CCTV is being considered in hotspot areas. The £150.00 rebate on Council Tax for properties graded A to D should be automatic for those paying by direct debit, other residents will need to contact NEDDC to let them know account details.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Wednesday 11th May in the Main Hall at Holmesfield Village Hall on Vicarage Close. Parish Council Annual Assembly starts at 6.30pm Parish Council Meeting starts at 7.30pm. All welcome to attend.

DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM March crime figures: Theft: 2(same), Burglary: 1 (–2), Violence against the person : 3 (+3). Dronfield SNT attended a number of public meetings including Parish and Town Council meetings and completing Derbyshire Talking surveys to gather people’s views and opinions on issues affecting them. A re-occurring theme was that people were asking about crime prevention information regarding gardens, outbuildings and sheds, etc. This is just as important as home safety crime prevention. Now that the clocks have gone forward and people will seek to spend more time outdoors hoping for nicer weather over the coming months. Please take a look at the information overleaf and share the information with friends, family and visitors to the area. HOLMESFIELD SUPPORT GROUP A meeting to discuss what support the village could offer in terms of hosting Ukrainians in Holmesfield was held on the 4th April. General discussion focussed on how people in the village could offer support, bearing in mind that we are not located near shops or secondary schools and anyone hosting would need to be able to support with transport too. The following suggestions were made: 1. Anyone hosting a family would get support from other families in the community – there is a list of 7 people who would be willing to support. 2. We should link up with the Dronfield Homes for Ukrainians group and offer them our support too. 3. As a village we should have a fund raiser so that we could make a donation to families coming into local areas such as Dronfield. 4. We could create a crowd-fund to seek donations to be able to raise enough funds to pay to rent a house for a family for a 6 month period. The consensus was that we should action points 3 & 4. Ideally, it would be a good solution if we could secure a rented house as this would give a family their own privacy. The next step is also to look to see if there are any landlords that would be willing to work with us. In the meantime, if you can host a family, there are a few Facebook pages where Ukrainians put on daily updates looking for sponsors and places to live. If you wish to find a family Homes for Ukraine is a private group you can join. Also Dronfield Homes for Ukraine is worth joining. If you do host a family and need any support, please make contact on the number below and we can connect you to the group. We have set up a separate WhatsApp group – if you are interested in being involved please just message 07711772058 to be added to the Whats App group.

SPEED INDICATOR DEVICES The Parish Council is applying to take part in a 12-month trial for speed indicator devices in the Parish. This is something that we have been requesting for many years, but were told that it was against current County Council protocol to grant permission for any further devices in Derbyshire. There has now been a change of policy and hopefully our application will be successful.

HOLMESFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH A Neighbourhood Watch meeting will be held on Monday 9th May, 8pm to 9pm in Holmesfield village hall. Everyone welcome! Please contact Sally Marples-Shaw if you have any questions: Tel: 07930 430044 – Email: sallyannms@icloud.com 19

CARAVANS PARKED AT OWLER BAR The April Parish Council meeting decided to update residents on the issue of unsightly caravans parked in a field overlooking Owler Bar. Our Parish Clerk has been tenaciously pursuing this issue for over two years. Lockdown has added to the delays as contacting officials has been extremely difficult. Replies to emails severely delayed, telephone calls never returned. The field in question is in the area of Holmesfield that is in the Peak Park which obviously makes dealing with the problem more complex. As Peak Park representative for Holmesfield Parish Council, I was asked to investigate. These are the things I have discovered and are entirely my words. I requested an official report from Peak Park but this was not forthcoming. There are three fields in newish ownership up at Owler Bar and it has been difficult to ascertain who owns what. The field in question was initially bought by two people. More recently it has changed hands to one of these original owners. One of the owners is using the field but it uncertain if this is the person who now owns it. One of the caravans is a retired mobile library unit. There is another van there and the owner has assured Peak Park they do not live in the field. Permission was eventually given to a Peak Park enforcement officer to enter the field as the owner had not wanted to meet during lockdown. It was discovered that the owner intends to have animals and grow vegetables. The long term objective is to bring school children there to learn about sustainability. When the Peak Park enforcement officer communicated with the owner, lawyers were involved which meant Peak Park had to hand the matter over to their legal department. The whole matter is now in the hands of lawyers. It is a very complex issue as the owner is entitled to use the land for agricultural activities. Case law is involved. Peak Park are exploring if the owner’s intentions are in fact within the definition of agricultural activity. Added to the mix, Peak Park are understaffed and the person in charge of this case has now reduced working hours and another person has taken over our case. Holmesfield Parish Council will continue to work on your behalf to resolve this issue but obviously it will take time. The investigation started over two years ago and has been under regular discussion at monthly meetings Shirley Reaney

Following the success of similar sessions in the District last year North East Derbyshire District Council will be holding an event on Monday 16 May in Barlow Village Hall between 5.30pm and 7.30pm, which will give people the chance to speak with councillors and officers, raise queries about the services they provide, obtain advice and guidance and find out more about our online services and how to sign-up for updates. ‘Question Time’ sessions will be chaired by North East Derbyshire District Council Leader, Cllr Alex Dale, at 6pm and 7pm, where a panel of Cabinet Members and Senior Officers will be available to address any questions from attendees. Cllr Alan Powell, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Communities and Communications said: “By holding these events in the heart of our communities we are providing a great opportunity for our residents and customers to find out more about the work of the Council and raise questions directly with councillors and officers. We will also be presenting our short film which showcases the Council’s recent achievements, future plans and explaining what services we deliver.” Anyone wanting to find out more, should keep checking the council’s website www.ne-derbyshire.gov.uk and social media for updates. HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL LOTTERY

As I mentioned in last months news letter, April is renewal time! I would like to thank all the local members for their ongoing support as everyone has renewed again for a further 6 months but we still welcome new members, the more the merrier! As this process is coordinated by myself and the school secretary we now are in a position to start the monthly draw again, there has not been one for the month of April due to collecting subs and the school closing for the Easter holiday but there will be two months drawn out in May, so everything will continue as normal then for the next 6 months If you wish to join either contact Penny Acres Primary School or myself Samantha Copley – Samcopley@me.com : 07803128729

HOLMESFIELD YOUTH CLUB This month ten local young people and three leaders from Glow! youth club went to the Pleasley Vale Outdoor Activity Centre courtesy of Dronfield Rotary Club. We had an amazing day and the weather held off for us to go boating, orienteering, rock climbing and problem solving together. It has been fantastic to see new friendships forming between the youth of our village. Photos shared with permission.

May sees the start of exam season for some of our young people – a stressful time for them, their families and school staff. Spare a thought for them as we offer a safe, nonjudgemental place for them to relax and hang out with their friends between exams. Plea: If you value the work we do with our young people, please consider volunteering with us occasionally on a Monday night. In order to keep Glow! running weekly we really need a few extra hands. The young people in Holmesfield are not like the media portrays them – they’re a really lovely bunch and I’m sure you would gain so much from them! Please get in touch to talk it through: Sarah Webb 07929582233 or sarah@webbhome.co.uk 31

BUYING AND SELLING GOODS ONLINE Derbyshire Police have been made aware of a recent scam where people have advertised items for sale on social media and the ‘buyer’ has offered to pay via bank transfer. When they arrive to collect the item, they show a screenshot of an approved transaction, and say that the money will be in the account in a few hours, however the money is never deposited. Anyone selling goods online is asked to check with their banks that any payments have cleared in their accounts before handing over goods. When buying or selling online, we would advise people follow this advice: • View the person’s profile- learn more about the person you are buying from/selling to. You can see if there are friends you have in common, recent activity and any ratings they may have received. • Use cash, PayPal or person-to-person payment methods. When selling an item, consider asking for full payment instead of instalments. • If you as the seller are happy to accept a bank transfer, wait for the funds to clear before handing over the goods. • Inspect the item and if possible, make sure to thoroughly test it before buying it. • Protect your personal information- we strongly advise against sharing personal information, such as your payment login and password details or bank account information. If you’re selling electronics, make sure that you’ve cleared any personal information from the device • Report a person: selling sites such as Facebook Marketplace and eBay allow you to report a person if they go against their standards or policies. If you believe you may have fallen victim to any kind of fraud, then you can contact Action Fraud via their website: www.actionfraud.police.uk Nicola Hall (Police Communications and Engagement Team)

HOLMESFIELD MARKET UPDATE What a fantastic market yet again! Although it was a slow start, things really picked up so thank-you for your support. A huge thanks goes to our volunteers as usual – without whom we could not manage the parking, veg and bread stalls, set up and take down on the day. We also would like to thank Ian and Sarah Webb for their support from the church. The church kindly donated the use of the hall for the markets free of charge. This is a very kind offer to support the village and was so much appreciated. There were quite a few new stalls as well as the regulars, but one of our new charity stalls was for the Holmesfield Scouts. The stall was run by James and Aoife Dorwood with the help of their cub and scout friends. They raised a whopping £373 by selling sweet cones. What an amazing effort all of you, well done!

The dates for the next markets are: Saturdays 2nd July, 1st October, and 3rd December. We are keen to hear from any new stall holders and also your feedback on what other types of stalls you would like to see. You can email us at holmesfieldlocalmarket@gmail.com This month the Market team have agree to make the following contributions to the village: 1. Donation of £300 made to the youth club towards the purchase of a new table tennis table 2. Donation of £500 towards the purchase another defibrillator for the village 3. Sponsorship of a first aid course for children to be run at the Village Hall, dates to be confirmed.

The market is all about raising funds to give back – without the volunteers, your support and our stall holders we couldn’t do it, so please continue to come to the markets. Please contact us at: holmesfieldlocalmarket@gmail.com The Holmesfield Local Market Team 35

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB

GREAT NEWS! Following on from last month’s article, we can announce that the planners have had a change of mind and we have been granted planning permission for our extended club house. We submitted additional information regarding the necessity for the development which the planners reviewed and eventually accepted. This is wonderful news, and we can now progress with the development. Unfortunately, it is probably too late for this season, but we should be up and running for next year. Now comes the hard work of raising the rest of the money. We will keep you updated on progress over the coming months. In addition to the new clubhouse, we are also looking to develop a second pitch for junior / ladies matches, and training. We have secured a lease on the field adjacent the bottom boundary. Unfortunately, we will need planning permission for this too, so work cannot start until approval is received - fingers crossed!

Ground news: If you have passed the ground recently you may have noticed that a new gate has been installed, this will allow easier access and egress from the ground. Unfortunately, the mirror installed last year to view oncoming traffic has been hit and smashed, this will need replacing before the start of the season. Further development of the ground and facilities will take place over the coming months, and we look forward to keeping you updated as these progress.. 37

HOLMESFIELD CHARITABLE TRUSTS The trustees of the Penny Acres Charitable Trusts are asking everyone if they know why we have our Trusts and who they are for ? We are very fortunate in Holmesfield to have three Charitable trusts which are open to application by anyone living in Holmesfield. The revenue for the Trusts comes from land donated in the 18th century on Cowley lane and later donations which are owned by the Charity Commission on behalf of the Penny Acres Charity. The Trust supports the ‘Educational Foundation‘ which is open to anyone age 25 or under who, or whose parents are residents in the village. Over a period of many years grants have been awarded for the purchase of books and more recently towards computers and sports equipment. The Trust receives regular applications and the Trustees are keen to encourage more applications to the ‘Relief in Need Charitable Trust’ and feel the old fashion Victorian wording of the Trust may be putting people off making an application. The remit of the Charity is to relieve hardship, need and distress – a very old fashioned way of saying that these days, life can be difficult as the cost of living is increasing. Anyone over 60 who is a resident of Holmesfield can apply and there is no means test applied. For further information, please contact the clerk to the charities: Mrs Geraldine Austen on 0114 289 0686. All applications are dealt with in strict confidence

MARCH 2022 WEATHER The saying that “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” is an English proverb that was first documented in Shakespeare’s time. It is thought to allude to the fact that March forms the link between the wild weather of winter and the gentleness of spring. The saying almost fits the weather during March this year in that the first half of the month was quite cool and this was followed by a week of simply glorious weather when the sun shone and we had temperatures of almost 20°C on several days. Unfortunately, this spell of idyllic weather came to a sudden end in the last week of the month and indeed the average temperature on the 31st March was only 1.4°C. Taken as a whole, the month was indeed quite warm with a mean temperature of 7°C, which is about one and a half degrees higher than normal. The rainfall was only about two thirds of what we usually see and during the lovely warm stretch no rain fell at all. I only recorded rain on seven days during the month. I was curious to compare March this year with March last year which was also fairly warm and dry. It did look very similar, with the exception of the 31st that saw an average temperature of 15.6°C last year but only just above zero this year. I began this piece with a proverb. I will end with Flanders and Swann, who I have often quoted in the past. They sang: Welcome, March, with wint’ry wind, Would thou weren’t not so unkind. They were totally wrong this year. We had the strong winds in February but March was quite gentle. Actually, as I write this in early April, the wind has Brian Brown returned and the daffodils are looking a little battered.

HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted. Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!

Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. For further information, those who may be eligible should contact the Clerk to the Charity, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). 51

A delightful scene at Eweford Bridge approx. 100 years ago and a relatively unusual view compared to the plethora of other commercially produced postcards of this area which was a popular destination for town and city dwellers seeking fresh air. This is the opposite view to this month’s front cover photograph.
