Byways open to all traffic: for any kind of transport, including cars (but they’re mainly used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders)
Bridleways: for walking, horse riding, bicycles, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

A written crime report was received at the meeting. The crime figures for July 2022 included three incidents including a theft, a burglary and violence against the person.
Horse riders are invited to attend a meeting to discuss road safety and improved access to bridleways in Dronfield and surrounding villages on Thursday 1st September 2022 from 7.00pm at Coal Aston Methodist Church, Eckington Road, Dronfield. S18 3AW.

ROAD SAFETY AND ACCESS TO BRIDLEWAYS FOR HORSE RIDERS
Thank you to those that have come forward – more volunteers would be welcome. We are all aware of the issue of speeding traffic on the main routes through Holmesfield and Millthorpe and we really want to carry out more speed watches to make our parish a safer place for all residents.
There have been a number of complaints over the misuse of footpaths in the Parish by cyclists and horse riders. The designation of each right of way is integral to who can use them.
If you could spare a couple of hours a week or a month, please contact Councillor Phil Reaney on 0114 2891167 and see how you could help with this important scheme.
Restricted byways: for any transport (without a motor), mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs
There is currently work on going with regards to speeding outside Penny Acres School. Concerns have been raised with regard to suspicious cars and possible drug related activity around Horsleygate Lane. Please report any information including times, dates and registration numbers to the Police. Following on from the Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week it is important for residents to report their concerns via the online hub at www.saferderbyshire.gov.uk, at www.derbyshire.police.uk or ring 101. The data is added to an analytical system which highlights trends and directs where resources are allocated.

There are several things going on behind the scenes in relation to speeding outside Holmesfield Penny Acres primary school. We have Speedwatch group running some sessions. We as a team are working to raise the profile of the location as an area of concern with DCC Highways and other agencies to see if they are able to make changes to make it safer for the people attending the school and visitors to the area. Some people have raised concerns about suspicious cars, and possible drug activity at Horsleygate Lane. As your local SNT we regularly patrol the location but would appreciate information regarding vehicles, etc. to be passed on to police and – if safe – to look at other ways to challenge the people involved. This work will be ongoing. As we start to think about the end of the summer, we would urge residents to consider their home security and target making property more secure. Dronfield SNT are happy to come out and walk round your property with you to discuss this in more detail. Please feel free to contact the team to arrange a home visit.

HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION
On 3rd August a very thought provoking talk was given to us by Renuka Russell on ‘Wonderful Weeds’ and why you should let them grow in your garden. She encouraged us to identify weeds that grow in our gardens and pointed out their useful medicinal properties, many of which date back to medieval times. Sphagnum Moss, for example, is very good for dressing wounds, Herb Robert is good for eye problems, and the list goes on. In more recent times research has confirmed these old uses and Renuka is working on a book of these remedial uses of plants which often have the tag of wort, such as Lung Wort or Pulmonaria. Her talk was very much appreciated making us more aware of treasures that can be so useful in our gardens.
PIE AND PEA SUPPER
On Wednesday 5th October our speaker will be Sally Mosley and she will speak to us on the subject of a ‘A Year in the Peak District’.

PENNY ACRES SCHOOL LOTTERY
What a fantastic summer we’ve had with Glow!
With thanks to Mr. & Mrs. T. Pearson and North East Derbyshire District Council through a Safer Community Grant we were able to take a group of young people bowling one evening, and the following week we spent a day with TRIBE in Holmesfield woods learning safe firelighting skills, den building with appropriate knots and generally having fun. The planned laser quest evening has been postponed until the Autumn term. Glow! will be changing slightly from September. You may recall from last month that I said Glow would be dropping back to two Mondays a month? Not so any more! Rev. Elliot, our new curate (trainee vicar) for the parish and his wife Megan, have agreed to take on running the other two weeks and I will be there as a support to them and to enable continuity for our young people. There’ll be all the fun you’ve come to expect from Glow! each week but Elliot and Megan will be bringing their own flavour to things on the weeks they’re leading. Glow! starts back on Mondays from 12th September 7.00 – 8.30pm in St Swithin’s Church Hall. There is no charge to enter and a tuck shop is available. All local young people Y7-Y13 are welcome. By following these top Safer Neighbourhood tips, you can help to boost security and protect your property:
• Fit wheel clamps. A good quality set of clamps is worth investing in since trying to remove these without keys can be noisy and increase the likelihood of thieves being caught;
• For added security, consider fitting an alarm or a tracking device;
FREE CHILDREN’S SUMMER ACTIVITIES
• Keep a record of the serial numbers of accessories fitted, such as fridges and cookers; • Ask neighbours and friends to keep an eye on your caravan and to alert the police about any suspicious activity near it.
• Mark items inside your caravan with your postcode using a UV Pen, or SmartWater security fluid – this will protect your property when you are using the caravan on a site, but it also makes it more easily identifiable to police in the event of it being lost or stolen;
On three Tuesday mornings during the summer holidays, Sarah Webb and a team of fabulous volunteers led free activities for primary aged children and their families in the church. There were 15-20 families each week who enjoyed sports led by Samba Sports and a variety of crafts, treasure hunts and other activities. This was partly funded by St Swithins Church and partly by Rykneld homes.
• Ensure that valuables are kept out of view and that blinds and curtains are closed to prevent a passing thief from looking inside;
For more information please contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team or visit: www.derbyshire.police.uk
• Immobilise your caravan at all times, no matter how short the stop. Remember to put your hitch lock on to minimise the risk or your caravan being towed away;
Smiles all round! CARAVAN SAFETY
25
• Pitch your caravan near to well-lit areas and close to any campsite CCTV if possible;
Whether it’s on a site, parked on your driveway or in a lay-by on your travels, it is important to protect your caravan and motorhome from the eye of a passing thief.
• Lock your caravan and take your keys with you. At home keep keys in a safe place, out of sight and away from windows and doors;

VILLAGE SOCIETY
As we head towards Autumn (I know... I’m sorry!) I want to give you all plenty of notice of the events the Holmesfield Village Society have planned.
On Saturday 29th October Holmesfield Village Society brings the cinema back to Holmesfield in time for Halloween. Following the success of last year’s Christmas film for children, we are showing two films on the same day. In the afternoon there will be a spooky offering for all the family in the village (adults are allowed), and then in the evening, the Rocky Horror Picture Show comes to Holmesfield.... please do come dressed appropriately! Tickets will be available for both films in September but please get the date booked in your diary now. Monday 31st October sees the annual Pumpkin Trail around the village with prizes for the best pumpkins and Halloween decorations. We will be publishing a map in advance with suggested times for exploring the spooky nooks and crannies of the village. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more details. The Village Society are looking forward to seeing you in October, until then I hope you enjoy what remains of the summer.

Following the local class sheep dog trial on Saturday 3rd the Longshaw Fell Race is to be run. Starting at approx. 10.30am. from the trial field, this year the race is to be pre-entry once again.
This will be the 124th year of the Association, thought to be the oldest continuous sheep dog trials in England, with the two world wars and 2001 because of foot and mouth being the only years when no trials were held.
On 1st & 2nd September there will be open class sheep dog trials when many of the ‘One Man and His Dog’ competitors will be taking part. We are very pleased to have Mr. Mark Day from Harbottle, near Morpeth to judge the open classes and championship, Mr. Malcolm Sowerby from Bradwell, Hope Valley, to judge the brace class, unless he is called away to act as Master of Sheep for filming ‘One Man and His Dog’ in which case the brace will be judged by Mr. Stuart Wilkinson from Thurgoland, Sheffield and Mr. Frank Satterthwaite from Brough in Cumbria to judge the local class. At approximately 3.30pm on 1st September - subject to any unforeseen circumstances - there will be a parade of local hounds and at approximately 1.30pm on Friday 2nd September there will be a display of English Bloodhounds courtesy of The Four Shires Bloodhounds.

Of course, the appearance of Sirius does not actually affect seasonal weather here on Earth but its appearance during the hottest part of summer ensures that the lore surrounding the star lives on today!
Brian Brown
37 JULY 2022 WEATHER 15th July is St Swithin’s day. According to folklore, whatever the weather is like on St Swithin’s Day - whether rain or sunshine - it will continue for the next 40 days. Well 15th July this year was certainly sunny and dry, and the weather has stayed that way for most of the days since. You may be becoming bored with reading yet another weather report about how dry the month of July was. I wrote last month that June had been yet another relatively dry month and that only February had been wetter than normal this year. Well the relative drought continues and during July I recorded 27.8mm of rain, only 37% of what we might expect during July. At the beginning of July we had 19 days without any rain at all and July 2022 is the driest July that I have recorded over the last 20 years. On 19th July the temperature reached 37.2°C and this is easily the hottest day that I have recorded over the same 20 year period. The previous warmest was 33.4°C on 25th July 2019. Our hottest days almost always occur during July. So July was certainly hotter and drier than normal. That said, we did have more rain than most of England to the south of Derbyshire, but less than places further north. I spoke last month about the water levels in the Derwent Valley Reservoirs. In particular, I noted that the two upper reservoirs of Howden and Derwent were only 33% and 50% full. On 1st August I checked again and the same reservoirs were now only 16% and 37% full! Ladybower Reservoir was still about 56% full and it is about three times bigger than the two upper reservoirs so the total for all three reservoirs was still about 45% full. Severn Trent Water has quite a large number of reservoirs, Carsington Reservoir, near Ashbourne, is almost as big as the Ladybower reservoirs and it was still about 70% full.
The “Dog days of summer” traditionally refers to the period from 3rd July to 11th August when the days can be hot and humid. I used to think that this referred to hot days when dogs would wilt but it appears that it actually came from the Greeks and Romans who believed that a time of drought in the summer would cause both dogs and men to be driven mad. The word ‘dog’ refers to the dog star Sirius which appears as part of the constellation Canis Major during the summer months. It was thought that the bright star caused summer’s sweltering heat.

U15s finished fourth in the league. In addition, they reached the Semi-Final and Quarter finals of the two age group cup competitions. The U15s ‘Blue’ team finished a commendable fourth in a league where most players were at least a year older – let’s see what next year brings!
Ladies Cricket: Congratulations to our Ladies who have won the EMWCL Softball Division 2 title following a comprehensive win against Alfreton – Net Score HCC 307, Alfreton 239. Top scorer on the day was Isobel Murray with 29, whilst the wickets were shared equally across all the bowlers.
U11s finished second behind Chesterfield in the League but gained revenge by beating them in the Cup final by a massive 51 runs. HCC 158, Chesterfield 107.
39
Congratulations to all the boys who have done the club proud this season. Derbyshire League News: Three losses and one win in the last four games have left the 1st XI in a perilous position in the League, currently sitting second from bottom and 35 points from safety. With only 5 games to play the Vill must win at least 3 of them to hope to avoid relegation. Having only won 4 games all season it will take a monumental effort to survive. Meanwhile the 2nd XI are sitting second in the League and with only two games left, one win will secure promotion to Division 8. .
U13s finished a commendable joint second in the League with four teams finishing on 15 points each! Meanwhile the U13s pairs team reached the final of the Cup, eventually losing to Coal Aston.

Stop: Taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information could keep you safe.
Action Fraud’s advice is to stop, challenge and protect when you receive a message that doesn’t seem right:
Challenge: Could it be fake? It’s okay to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.
Action Fraud have reported that over £1.5million has been lost by victims through this specific scam between 3rd February and 21st June this year. In some cases, victims have sent multiple amounts of money before realising the recipient isn’t a family member.
WHATSAPP ‘FRIEND IN NEED’ SCAM MESSAGES
Protect: If you think you’ve been a victim of fraud, contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud online at actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. You can also forward suspicious text messages that you have not acted upon to 7726 for Action Fraud to review.
Detective Constable Tammy Barnes, Derbyshire Constabulary’s Vulnerable Fraud Investigation Officer, said: “Being contacted urgently by a relative is always concerning, and the desire to help in an emergency is what the criminals are relying on. These criminals know that by calling the victim as ‘Mum’ or ‘Dad’ there is a reasonable chance that the recipient is a parent and will help the person, who they think is their child, without further question. If you ever get a message from a friend or family member that you think is suspicious, especially when they are asking for money or personal details, always call them and confirm their identity before doing anything else.”
43
Key signs that this is a scam may be someone sounding different, making spelling or grammar mistakes that are out of character and creating a sense of urgency for the recipient to carry out actions.
Police officers are warning WhatsApp users to be aware of a scam where criminals pretend to be a friend or family member with a new number requesting money after breaking their phone. Often the scammers pretend to be a child of the recipient, with the first message often saying, “Hello Mum” or “Hello Dad”.
They might engage in small talk, using information unknowingly given by the victim to make the messages sound realistic, and will then ask for money in the form of a bank transfer or payment of bills.
A video on our Facebook page shows what a conversation might look like, and some of the warning signs.

The Plague Doctor
David Bell is a hugely entertaining and refreshingly different guest speaker recommended by hundreds of clubs and societies across the UK. He will not only surprise you but will also make you think; and certainly make you smile. A proud born and bred Geordie, David retired to Eyam some years ago, confident that the village’s famous plague heritage would be nothing other than a passing distraction. Tourists flock to Eyam annually to see for themselves where a brave disease driven lockdown was played out with such tragic consequences. But don’t expect too much doom and gloom from this compelling speaker. David’s tongue-in-cheek take on staying fit and well and avoiding disease 350 years ago will convince you that, even in these troubled times, we all have a lot to be thankful for. So, brace yourself – clench your buttocks – and see how a 17th century doctor coped !
Join us for an evening of quizzing and fabulous food. Relax and enjoy a Pre-dinner drink followed by a delicious two course meal with a Quiz. Bring your own wine. Please note that places are limited and are not guaranteed until payment is received at the Barn Coffee Shop (in a named envelope please). We are very fortunate in Holmesfield to have three Charitable trusts which are open to application by anyone living in Holmesfield. The revenue for the Trusts comes from land donated in the 18th century on Cowley lane and later donations which are owned by the Charity Commission on behalf of the Penny Acres Charity.
The Trust supports the ‘Educational Foundation‘ which is open to anyone age 25 or under who, or whose parents are residents in the village. Over a period of many years grants have been awarded for the purchase of books and more recently towards computers and sports equipment.
CHARITABLE TRUSTS
Holiday Dates: Scouts and Explorers will recommence on Tuesday 13th September 2022. Beavers and Cubs will recommence on Wednesday 14th September 2022.
The Trust receives regular applications and the Trustees are keen to encourage more applications to the ‘Relief in Need Charitable Trust’ and feel the old fashion Victorian wording of the Trust may be putting people off making an application. The remit of the Charity is to relieve hardship, need and distress – a very old fashioned way of saying that these days, life can be difficult as the cost of living is increasing. Anyone over 60 who is a resident of Holmesfield can apply and there is no means test applied. For further information, please contact the clerk to the charities: Mrs Geraldine Austen on 0114 289 0686. All applications are dealt with in strict confidence

Please note that all four sections have a waiting list. If you have children you would like to join the group, please get their names on our waiting lists as soon as possible – don’t wait until they are the right age, to avoid disappointment.
Scouts and Explorers: Meet Tuesday nights at the usual times. Beavers and Cubs: Meet Wednesday nights at the usual times.
3rd HOLMESFIELD SCOUT GROUP

HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help!
Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense. Please note that grants will not be given if purchases have already been made. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday in January, April, July and October.
Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686). for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence.

For further information, those who may be eligible should contact the Clerk to the Charity, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield. S18 7WB (Tel: 0114 289 0686).

Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.
