HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION The speaker for October was Peter Farrow who talked about the life of Gladioli from its formation as a tiny corm on the main corm, how to feed and give preventive medicine, to showing the blooms at the RHS Show in Harrogate. There are many tricks that one has to do to present the Gladioli Bloom to its advantage which is very time consuming and needs patience at all stages. It was a most interesting and fascinating talk. The next meeting will be our Annual Pie and Pea Supper on Wednesday 7th November at 7.30pm in Holmesfield Village Hall. Tickets cost £10 which includes a dessert. Please bring your own refreshments and prizes for the raffle. The Entertainment is Busking Buddies who play for charity. Please support the Gardening Association’s annual event. HOLMESFIELD NATURE SPOT This has been a memorable Summer weather wise but not so good for our local birds now the days are shortening and the weather is getting colder and wetter. The last of the swallows and martins have left us and started their hazardous migration to Africa and we are greeted by the distinctive smell of Autumn. Leaves are falling from the trees but this Year the leaves are falling earlier than normal Years’ and this is the effect of the prolonged Summer drought. You may notice that the berries on some trees like rowan are much smaller and fruit has been falling well before the ripening month of late October / November for the apples. All this is due to the extreme weather we have had for the last 6 months and I have recently noticed some trees like silver birches have shut down prematurely and if you scrape under the dead branches they are quite green and healthy this is part of their extreme survival strategy. When we talk about climate change it is evident that this is creating major problems. Animals and birds need to adapt to these conditions like very hot dry Summers and extreme wet Winters with more flash flooding being the norm. The different Farming methods also have changed where fields are grassed over all the season and cut for silage and hay for cattle meaning that we are not growing crops like barley, wheat and oats any longer in the village or that matter potatoes. Sadly the first cut coincides at the time skylarks are nesting with young in the fields. The country birds that relied on Farmers leaving the strip on the edge of fields “not combined” had ensured that the buntings and sparrows had adequate supplies of grain for the harsh Winter months nowadays, these birds rely on us filling that gap and we are seeing more chaffinches, greenfinches and yellow buntings in our gardens because of this. Ploughed land will attract different birds that feed off the grubs and worms unearthed and may attract flocks of lapwing or “peewit” once a common sight on the moorlands around here. Several prominent organisations like BTO and RSPB and Wildlife Trusts are campaigning to make British wildlife conservation an important item on the Government agenda when we leave Europe and on September 22nd they marched in London led by “BBC Springwatch” presenter Chris Packham and other prominent media personalities to make them aware of the serious plight of our wildlife and are asking for a National Manifesto. Network Rail also destroyed trees and foliage in the nesting season on their land. – we have lost over 90,000 birds in our countryside in the last decade – when was the last time you heard a skylark soaring in the sky or saw a corn bunting singing in a hedge although there have been success stories like the increase in reed bunting numbers. I can remember a time 20

when safeguarding wildlife was the gold standard for any Government and naturalists like David Attenborough are saying now is the time we should speak out and our voices heard at the highest level. What to look for this Month. You should hear or see flocks of geese flying to their Winter grounds. This is the time when you will put out the seed feeders either well cleaned with disinfectant or buying new feeders for peanut and seed feeders. There has been a problem with bacteria infecting seed eaters like greenfinches and chaffinches for the last few Years and clean feeders and water sources are important. The new feeders are exceptionally easy to clean by undoing the base by a twist. The feeders will be used by many birds and if you put a brazil nut on the bird table it will attract nuthatches. These are woodland birds will venture into our gardens for peanuts. There will be flocks of chaffinches and other finches forming now and on Moorwood Lane near Baslow Road a flock of 50 meadow pipits have been seen and an occasional barn owl hunting. If you are lucky you may see a little owl there. Jays are found in the woods in larger numbers now looking for the acorns in Holmesfield Park Wood. The BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) are asking you to listen out from the end of September to March for the calls of tawny owls and send the results to them (all information on their website). Bats are still flying but you may need a bat detector to locate them as they are feeding higher in the sky. They will be around until it gets colder at dusk and early mornings. Pipestrelles are by far the most common bat we have here but the larger noctules have been recorded and long eared bats have been recorded as well. There are very few moths around now. It’s a good time to look for fungi the best time to find it is on a damp humid day in the woodland. There is also an app you can download which identifies fungi from a photo taken by your phone. They are essential to the natural eco-web that encompasses animals, trees and plants in our woodland and gardens. Mistle Thrushes and the thrush family will be seen in gardens and orchards if you leave some windfall apples on the ground for them. This season is natures bounty for the wildlife so some unexpected visitors like badgers and foxes may come into your gardens or you may see a passing weasel or stoat. In the Midlands mistle thrushes spread mistletoe berries by wiping the sticky seed on apple tree branches. They are a parasitic plant but a welcome during this time of Year. Mature Yew tree berries found in Churchyards are essential to many birds, we are fortunate to have a fine example of a mature Yew tree as you walk up the path from the Village Hall car park in St Swithin’s churchyard. If you have seen anything unusual you can email the nature spot at ianpkassell@outlook.com Ian Kassell 21

AUGUST 2018 WEATHER September did not continue the ‘hottest summer on record’ that the Met Office reported at the end of August. In many ways it was an a normal September. The average day and night temperature in Holmesfield was 12.7°C, which is only slightly cooler than my records over the past 16 years. What was unusual about September was the rainfall that was double the normal, with 120mm in total and 80mm (more than 3 inches) coming down in a single 12 hour period on the 20th September. At one point the rain was falling at a rate of five inches per hour. That day was the wettest that I have recorded since getting my weather station in June 2002. The previous very wet day in my records was the 25th June 2007 when about 60mm of rain fell. June 2007 was the month of the ‘Great Sheffield Floods’ when boats were used on the Wicker, much of Meadowhall was flooded and the River Don burst its banks. The whole month of June 2007 was much wetter than September this year. In August I mentioned that our sunny summer was the result of the UK being on the edge of the Azores high pressure. As I write this note in early October, the Azores high is with us again and has given us some fairly settled weather. If you have a barometer you might, as I do, tap it from time to time, to see if the pressure is rising. The atmospheric pressure is 1025 millibars at the moment. It is the weight of the air above us, and as one cubic metre of air weighs about 2kg there is a lot above us. It comes to about 10 tonnes per square metre. Sorry for all the numbers. Frank Sinatra in his ‘September Song’ sang ‘But the days grow short when you reach September’. Autumn seems to have arrived early and the trees are changing their colour. Perhaps this is the result of the record summer of 2018 that we were able to enjoy. Brian Brown

DRONFIELD HALL BARN TRUST EVENTS

Saturday 17th November to Saturday 8th December Derbyshire Arts Cooperative - A New Exhibition Join the regulars as well as some new makers exhibiting glass, textiles, metalwork and more! Derbyshire Arts Cooperative are a diverse group of artists based in the Chesterfield area who regularly exhibit their work together. Each spring the Derbyshire Open Arts event takes place to encourage local artists to open up their studios to the general public. Four core artists are from very different fields and their work is constantly evolving. By inviting guest artists whenever they can there is always something new to see at these shows. At the Hall Barn Centre, High Street, Dronfield. (Free entry). Thursday 22nd November, 7.30pm - 9.00pm Painted Fabrics Hillary Widdowson joins us to give a fascinating lecture about the story of thousands of soldiers who lost their limbs during WW1 and the company who employed them to create beautiful handcrafted materials that were then sold around the world. This event coincides with our WW1 exhibition. At the Hall Barn Centre, High Street, Dronfield. Members £2, Non-members £4. Friday 23rd November, 7.30pm - 9.00pm Confessions Of A Cockney Temple Dancer “This warm and approachable one-man show is the true story of Shane, an East End lad (named after a Hollywood Western character), through him learning to dance – keeping it secret from his mates – and on to his final triumph, dancing professionally in a way that feels right for him rather than wearing ‘a colourful costume and ankle bells’. So far, so Billy Elliot. But Shane’s story is also about how he felt he was growing up ‘a foreigner’ even though he was born in Britain. This show is both his story and a way of acknowledging that this style of dance (the South Asian style of Bharatanatyam) may be ‘foreign’ to many audiences, and by making this connection with us he presents both in a thoughtful and entertaining way.” At the Hall Barn Centre, High Street, Dronfield. Members £8, Non-members £12.50. Friday 30th November, 5.00pm - 9.00pm Saturday 1st December, 10.00am - 3.00pm Christmas Mini Market At the Hall Barn Centre, High Street, Dronfield. 37

WHAT A NUISANCE ! Yes, what a nuisance. We have to return to the subject of dog fouling, but what a nuisance it is. There are continual reports of owners allowing their dogs to foul lawns and pathways of homes and parks. It is antisocial, a health hazard, and unacceptable. It is a difficult problem to solve of course. Dog wardens and police officers need identification evidence if they are to proceed. Taking photos of offenders is problematic. If you see it, please note the date & time, and write down a description of the dog owner. If an offender is caught and officials press for the maximum fine of £1000, this serves as a very serious warning to errant dog owners.

We are grateful to Jane Greetham for sharing this fine 1950s view of Holmesfield Riding School. Christine Denash says that the horses pictured are Jenny-Lee, Budget, Pinto and Lulu. Run by a former jockey - Cyril Rowley - who was also landlord of the George & Dragon (visible on the left) until c.1964 when he moved with his wife Lorna to run a pub near Pontefract. The stables were demolished in 1968 and now form part of the pub’s car park. Gerald Swift comments that after demolition a 60ft deep well was discovered which had to be capped off with reinforced concrete!
