SPEEDING THROUGH THE PARISH Correspondence has been ongoing with Derbyshire County Council via Lee Rowley MP over the ongoing concerns of the speed of traffic travelling through the village, this has been evidenced by data from the Community Speed Watch, who have recorded speeds of up to 69mph in a 30mph zone. Dronfield Police SNT were in Holmesfield on 24th November supporting local residents with their Community Speedwatch. In the 30 minutes they were there, a total of 21 vehicles were recorded as exceeding the 30mph speed limit outside Penny Acres Primary School. As there have not been any accidents on the roads through Holmesfield and Millthorpe it does not meet the current policy of Derbyshire County Council to implement any changes in speed limits or introduce any traffic calming measures. The matter is to continue to be pursued cc’d to our MP and County Councillor; and some exploration undertaken of the cost of installing suitable traffic calming signage.
PLAYGROUND INSPECTOR We are delighted to welcome Amy Shaw to our team.
HOLMESFIELD FLOWER CLUB There is no Flower Club meeting in December. A new programme is being planned for 2019. Contact Diana Holland for further information, Tel: 0114 2377601.
RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Anyone who is eligible should write to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mrs Geraldine Austen at Greenways, Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield, S18 7WB (Tel: 2890686) for more details. All applications are treated in strict confidence. The Trustees are also able to make ‘one-off’ grants for unforeseen capital expenses such as (for example) the payment required by the District Council to remove old goods. If you are faced with such a bill contact Mrs Austen and tell her about it. The Trustees want to help anyone who qualifies, but cannot if they do not know who would like help! 11

WINTER SNOW CLEARANCE Volunteers throughout the county are being called upon to help clear snow and ice from Derbyshire’s roads and pavements this winter. Derbyshire County Council want to hear from residents and farmers willing to help keep their communities safe when bad weather hits. Town and parish councils and other community groups are being asked to gather together local people to join the Snow Warden Scheme. For helping out, each council or group will get a free delivery of up to a tonne of bagged grit, training and advice on how to clear snow and ice safely, and specialist weather reports. Farmers and others with ploughing or gritting equipment are being asked to help keep the county’s roads on the move from now until next April. Anyone taken on as a contractor will get £200 for signing up - even if they are ultimately not required - plus extra payments for call outs. Snow wardens get involved in: • clearing snow and ice from their community’s pavements • reporting local conditions through our website • reporting situations that affect vulnerable residents • co-ordinating volunteers to clear snow and distribute grit • reporting empty grit bins. Farmers and contractors need to: • provide their own equipment • be available to work 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday – although extra help may be requested if conditions are particularly severe • arrange appropriate insurance • be able to respond to a call out within 90 minutes. Councillor Simon Spencer, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said: “While it may seem early to be preparing for winter, especially with our recent stretch of very warm weather, the reality is it’s not far off. We have to start planning now to make sure we have the right resources in place so we are ready when colder conditions arrive. We look after around 3,500 miles of roads and footpaths and grit around half of them. These include our major roads, routes where there is only one way in or out of an area, major bus routes and roads serving emergency services’ bases. But we can’t be everywhere, which is why our volunteers and contractors are an invaluable resource, particularly in our more rural parts. It’s never too late to sign up to either of these schemes and I would encourage anyone who’d like to volunteer to get in touch as soon as possible.” Last year 71 town and parish councils helped clear snow and ice from pavements and footpaths. And for the 2017/2018 winter season, 50 farmers and other contractors helped protect their local communities. To find out more information about the Farmers and Contractors Scheme and town and parish councils plus other community groups interested in volunteering for the Snow Warden Scheme, ring Derbyshire County Council on 01629 538074. www.derbyshire.gov.uk/snow 13

HOLMESFIELD PENNY ACRES SCHOOL We are pleased to announce our new permanent Executive Head teacher for the federation of Penny Acres and Wigley Primary Schools has now taken his position at school and would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr David Ratcliffe, this is an exciting time for the pupils and staff and we look forwards to the school achieving excellent results and recommendations in the future. Activities carried out at school during November included: During ‘Anti-bullying week’ the children developed their understanding and awareness of what bullying is and how best to deal with it. This also involved writing recipes for a ‘good friend’. They were allowed to dress in spots and odd socks to mark this event and for Children In Need donating £1 per child for these charities. The Infants have been busy making nests for birds using natural resources found on site. Creations showed flair, creativity and environmental mindfulness. The Juniors welcomed Sarah Champion, Labour MP for Rotherham into school. She spoke about her role and the children were given the opportunity to ask questions. Questions were thoughtful and considered. The Holmesfield Village hall played host to the PTFA fancy dress disco. This Event was very well attended with parents enjoying the night as much as the children and it was also used as a fund raising exercise. Our partnership with the Qualitas sports organisation has continued to grow with a number of our KS1 girls attending a very wet and windy football event. (Monday 12th November). All the children paid their respects during our teaching and learning activities focusing on the 100th anniversary of WW1, observing a two minute silence with the upmost respect and admiration for those that have lost their lives during conflict. School also played host to Emma Ray, a representative from Derbyshire Environmental department. Emma spoke about the benefits of recycling on the environment. As you can see school has been very busy since returning after half term and this will continue on the run up to Christmas. Future dates/events Dental hygienist visiting school – Thursday 6th December School visit to Chesterfield Pantomime – early December. Penny Acres Christmas production at St Swithins Church – Tuesday 18th December School Christmas dinner – Wednesday 19th December 17

APRIL 1915 NEWSPAPER REPORT This newspaper report from April 1915 shows that Holmesfield actually fared comparatively better than some towns and villages which suffered huge losses on an unprecedented scale. Nine of its young sons died during the Great War (and 1 afterwards from injuries sustained from battle), yet 52 thankfully returned home to much celebration, though what must have been going through the minds of the bereaved of those soldiers not so lucky doesn’t bear thinking about. We will remember them.

HOLMESFIELD NATURE SPOT The first real taste of Winter greeted us at the end of October and with it came a harsh frost which was the signal for wildlife to start feeding up for the coming Winter – a Winter we all hope will not be as severe as the last one in 2017, although cold Winters have traditionally benefitted butterflies who you will now find hidden in the thick evergreen leaves of ivy, or you may find them in your shed in a quiet corner if they managed to get in through an open window on a sunny day earlier last Month. All animals and birds are taking full advantage of nature’s bounty in the hedgerows. The berries are their lifeline so if taking sloes or rose hips, leave a few behind for the birds. Field mice are trying to find warmer surroundings, so you may see them in your garden or possibly a shrew. These live their lives at great speed – seeing an animal darting past you at great speed is the only clue they are resident unless your find their nests. They are all storing up a Winter larder of nuts and berries. We don’t seem to have a problem like most places with grey squirrels in our area as I’m sure they are controlled. In some areas they do great damage and are not cuddly creatures but damage tree bark and raid woodland bird nests. It may look like the wildlife garden is not as active in these months but if you look closely and have left a patch of nettles uncut, or an area of vegetation, you may be lucky enough to see a tiny wren foraging on the spiders that are hiding there. This is the first month that the birds need feeding and I know many of you buy peanuts for them as well as fat-balls. Mealworms can be bought in the local food stores now. Talking of butterflies, I went to a very interesting talk on them by Paul Selby, the butterfly man who identified the endangered white letter hairstreak living in the threatened Chelsea Road in Sheffield. He told us the blue butterflies we see around here sometimes have a symbiotic relationship with ants. They lay eggs on the birds foot trefoil plant and the ants take the eggs, hide them in their colonies and care for them so if the ant hills are destroyed, the butterflies are too. Our actions in nature can have a lasting effect on the environment which we maybe unaware of. An addition you may like to consider to enhance your garden colour at this time may be to purchase a “British” grown ornamental apple tree – these are spectacular at this time, some with quite large apples and you have the added bonus of blossom in early Spring. Likewise a dwarf specimen of Rowan or Sorbus as they are known to benefit wildlife in the garden. A Project to Consider this Month. Those of you who have large gardens may consider installing tree sparrow nestboxes on 2 metre high wooden posts at regular intervals to try and increase the 32
numbers of these sparrows which are now a rarity in the countryside, but luckily we have quite a large colony of them in and around the Woodthorpe Hall area where I have seen them nesting in the Barn wall near to the Public Footpath to Totley. We are fortunate that we have land owners who value our wildlife in the village. The sparrow itself can be found in flocks of house sparrows and has a distinctive dark patch on its neck and its flight is slightly different. My other project is restoring an old barn in the village and increasing the number of very shallow ponds on the land for frogs, toads and other amphibians. There are other autumnal shrubs that can be grown quite easily and berberis has a bonus in that the thorns deter intruders quite successfully. There are also Pyracanthas and Cotoneasters and you may see a flock of waxwings visiting them if we get an influx from Scandinavia – it all depends how productive their berry harvest has been. The best intruder proof bush or hedge bar none must be the Sea Buckthorn which has orange acid berries – you will see these on East Coast sand dunes – the sea berries are now considered a delicacy but be careful picking them as stout gloves are essential. I’ve still noticed hoverflies around and the November weather seems to be returning to more stable temperatures at night but may be too cold for bats now, although I’ve seen some midges flying around water in the daytime – even after frosty nights. This is the time we should be thinking of the coming Spring and what plants a wildlife gardener can incorporate into their gardens like fragrant daffodils and primroses and cowslips which grow very well here. All these will be bonus for the early flying bees and insects who need the nectar. The BBC have two exceptional programmes, the first being the tried and tested formula of Monty Don’s “Gardeners World” and the BBC 2 and BBC Scotland programme “Beechgrove Garden”. All of these programmes are available on BBC iPlayer. Monty Don is a self- confessed organic wildlife gardener and its cool nowadays to be interested in wildlife. Schools like Penny Acres Primary School are teaching children about caring for and preserving the habitats for our village wildlife important as we have to consider the effects of climate change. These events will occur in their generation. I would like to let you know that hedgehog boxes that you can now buy have been adapted so they deter badgers from entering the boxes. This has been a perennial problem in the past but the latest design has found a solution to it. Well that’s another Month on Nature Spot and if you have seen any unusual events in your garden, please email them to ianpkassell@outlook.com and we will include it in the next Holmesfield Nature Spot. OCTOBER 2018 WEATHER October was a great month for apples. I noticed several places in the village where people had bags of apples at the end of their driveways. Sadly, some of ours have finished up on the compost heap. Perhaps as a result of the fairly cold winter last year, the apples seemed to be without disease and that, coupled with the fact that we saw very few wasps around, resulted in an excellent apple crop. Now the weather in October was typical for the month, with a mean temperature of 9.8°C which is very slightly below my average for the month. The 10th of the month was very warm at 21.4°C and we had two periods of strong winds that scattered the leaves around. It was a fairly dry month with only 58mm (about 2 inches) of rain. Following the very dry months of May to August, I was curious to see how much water there was in the Ladybower reservoirs. The upper Howden reservoir was very low a few weeks ago and more recently, Ladybower was also very low, and the remains of the village of Derwent could be seen. The villages of Derwent and Ashopton were flooded by the construction of the Ladybower dam between 1935 and 1945. Derwent had a Church built in 1867 on the site of an earlier one, a pub, a school and Derwent Hall – built in 1672 in the time of Charles the 2nd. It is hard to imagine the tree lined lanes and stone cottages with scented gardens that were once here. The vicarage was just on the edge of the current reservoir. The vicar of Derwent, Walter Rouse, had been there for 45 years and was allowed to stay, although he died in 1945 before the water reached his door and Derwent Valley Water Board then demolished the building. The Church spire was left standing initially but attracted so much attention much of it was removed in 1947 and then demolished in 1959. Derwent village has been exposed in a few dry summers 1959, 1976 and 1989. The remains of the Church and the foundations of Derwent Hall could be seen at the end of October this year. So it was a fairly average October. It was dry but the total for the year, so far, is still about average because March was very wet. I assume that Ladybower levels are low because the reservoirs were unable to store the heavy rain at the beginning of the year. Brian Brown
