POLICE NOTICE Dave Crook introduced himself as the new PC for Holmesfield picking up the reins from PC Sally Horner who has moved into a different role in the force. PC Crook said: “I know the local area very well and I’m looking forward to the community focussed side of policing that our Safer Neighbourhood teams are about. It is obvious from talking to local residents that PC Horner was very well known, and I hope to continue to build upon those good community relations”. PC Crook is to be assisted by two PCSOs Rebecca Basford and Phil Levers. The meeting of Neighbourhood Watch on Monday 11th September was attended by PCSO Phil Levers and about 40 members of the public who are concerned about the spate of burglaries in the Parish. It was asked whether Holmesfield is being particularly targeted, the response was that it wasn’t, but does seem to be in a corridor of crime. An arrest has been made several weeks ago and this seems to have slowed down the rate of burglaries within the corridor. Many residents continue to be concerned and an app has been set up for residents to alert each other of suspicious activity. Community Safety Manager at North East Derbyshire District Council - Faye Green – is to be invited to a future meeting of the Neighbourhood Watch. The issue of drug dealing in the Parish was raised; it is understood that the collection of evidence is ongoing. It was asked would the mobile unit be returning, it is hoped that this can be booked for the first Thursday of the month to coincide with Market Day at the Civic Centre. Provision of CCTV for the prevention of crime was discussed and whether this could be of help in the prevention of crime within the village The community Speed Watch now has eleven registered helpers, last time over 56 vehicles sped through the village with one recorded as travelling at 69 mph in the vicinity of the school. The Crest team has been booked to monitor traffic through the village. 13

Martin has written 3 books about his career in the police force. In spite of all the heat and lack of rain the members managed to produce flowers, vegetables and fruit for the Annual Show the results are as follows: 1. Rose Bowl, for best in Floral and Foliage Section- Gill Middleton. 2. Cup for best in Vegetable Section-Bev Blanksby. 3. Trophy for best exhibit in Domestic Class- Hazel Smith. 4. HOLMESFIELD NATURE SPOT This has been a memorable Summer weather wise but not so good for our local wildlife where the lack of rainfall has resulted in many ponds and local water sources thoroughly drying up. That is unless kind villagers have topped up the source with rain water from water butts. In these conditions, birds like Song Thrushes will find it difficult to find enough as food such as the worms and snails shelter from the extreme heat of the last few months. Song Thrush numbers are improving with more of the public refusing to buy slug pellets and turning instead to wildlife friendly alternatives like copper bands or sheep wool pellets available from Garden Centres. A supply of regularly changed water in containers is essential for birds in our gardens and if you do this you are less likely to find mosquitoes breeding there. The late cold Spring we had meant that birds were nesting later in the year although the common Wood Pigeon can breed in nearly every month hence its growth of numbers and having no real predators other than cats or opportunist Sparrowhawks which tend to take collared doves instead. Talking about slug control, there is a national campaign to save our hedgehogs whose numbers have dropped alarmingly – if you want to help them, there are a few simple things you can do like cutting small circular holes in fences low down and not use methaldehyde coated slug pellets – you can buy a hog-house cover with leaves and locate it in a quiet corner of the garden and you may get them hibernating this Winter.

There has been a big drop in populations of Swallows and House Martins in the village. They rely on old barns or outbuildings in the case of Swallow, and eaves of houses for House Martins, so if you want to help them you can buy Swallow Swift bricks and House Martin boxes. Birds moult during August and September, and generally keeping a low profile This is evident with low numbers of Blackbirds, Robins and the Dunnocks at this time, but you may see an occasional Warbler. This could be a Chiff-Chaff or Willow Warbler. They are both olive in colour but the Chiff-Chaff has black legs and Willow Warbler pink / green legs and yellow in the tail feathers. You are more likely to spot these if you have left weeds to grow to maturity and they feed on blackfly on a rape seed plant. There is national concern that we are just too tidy in our gardens and wildlife of all descriptions need untidy gardens to thrive or breed in, so please consider leaving a part of the garden to grow wild, and you will be rewarded with butterflies and exotic hawkmoths. A good plant for this would be the valerian family. If you have a buddleia growing you should have seen the Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral - and of course - the Large White, but we have Green Veined Whites here now and if you are lucky, you can see a Comma Butterfly as well as a visitor from Africa - the Painted Lady - together with another European moth called the Hummingbird Hawkmoth. You may have heard the screeching of the Tawny Owls establishing their territories again or maybe youngsters moving into a new territory. It has been an excellent year for the owl population in the village and Barn Owl numbers are increasing here thanks to sympathetic landowners and farmers letting them nest undisturbed in old barn buildings. Friends of Gillfield Wood have also installed barn owl boxes which we thank them for doing, hoping they will populate old barns in Totley and Dore over time. Over the next few weeks we will see the arrival of the Fieldfare and Redwing thrushes from Scandinavian countries. You may have seen them over the previous cold Winter stripping Pyracantha berries or old windfall apples left under trees. The Redwing is the size of a Song Thrush and the Fieldfare is about same size as a Mistle Thrush. You will know Autumn is with us when they descend on mass on Hawthorn Trees. If you view these flocks of birds occasionally you will see a Sparrowhawk trying his or her luck for a meal. Finally, the RSPB and BTO are requesting residents feed birds all through the Year. Please put food out early morning and it will be gone by the afternoon so deterring rats and vermin. Now is the time to resume feeding peanuts and you will see Blue Tits, Robins, Great and Coal Tits and you may see starlings or a Greater Spotted Woodpecker. I hope you enjoyed the new Nature Spot and if you see anything unusual you can contact Ian kassell on email ianpkassell@outlook.com.

SHALE GAS FRACKING AN INDUSTRY COMING TO NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE – THE FACTS I would like to draw your attention - if you have not heard about it already that the fracking industry is shortly coming to North East Derbyshire, so how will it affect us in this Village?, you might say. After all, we are several miles away from the proposed fracking field on Bramley Moor Lane in Eckington. The answer to this is quite surprising as it will affect us much more than we think!
History In August this year, a Public Inquiry in Chesterfield found in favour of the appellant INEOS and gave permission to drill only an exploratory listening well on green belt land on Bramley Moor Lane. The Inspector in her closing summary admitted that by drilling at night there would be harm to residents adjoining the site which is less than 300 metres away from a large housing estate and 400 metres from an infants’ school. However, this harm is outweighed by the national need for shale gas in the Ministerial Statement. If only that was true. INEOS have informed us it is to be used in their plastics factory to make more single use plastic and the residue gas. If gas is found it would be sold on the open market to the highest bidder, so not necessarily the National Grid. The Industry thus far has a very poor safety record, causing a minor earthquake near Blackpool a few Years ago. Indeed, INEOS themselves have a poor safety record at their Grangemouth Refinery. Now the interesting part is that many of our properties are built near old mine workings that the Coal Authority have earmarked, and have concerns over Bramley Moor Lane which has many such areas marked by red crosses. INEOS will have to drill at high pressure to extract the resulting shale gas. I know from experience that our own bungalow was built on a concrete raft construction to mitigate the possibility of subsidence in the mid-1980s.
Rise in House Insurance Premiums in a Fracking Zone. Then we come to the most interesting aspect to many of us in the village – the thorny issue of house insurance premiums. Only this week, insurance companies are suggesting a significantly large increase in house insurance premiums for any property that lies within a 28
5-mile zone of a proposed hydraulic fracturing site to fund the possibility of “an explosion on site or an earth tremor resulting from the drilling at high pressure on unstable mine workings”. Many properties in the Holmesfield area will fall within this as do all properties in Dronfield Woodhouse. The CLA and insurance companies are obviously concerned about possible claims to their members and the ex-CEO of INEOS could not give a guarantee that the Industry was safe, and if such an incident occurred, it may be considered “an Act of God”. INEOS will have insurance with Llloyds but we wouldn’t. He also confirmed that horizontal hydraulic fracturing of shale had never been attempted on land by his company – INEOS – so we are their guinea pigs for this untried technology. Since our Meeting, Mr Hayward – their CEO – recruited from SHELL has stood down. The Government refuse currently to discuss with CLA insurance issues or even with residents in these zones.
The part played by our MP Lee Rowley Our MP Lee Rowley has been very supportive of the Eckington residents after reading papers by eminent professors like Prof. Styles. He is more convinced than ever that this Industry should not be drilling in a green belt area where we already have unsafe mine workings. Postscript: INEOS now want the industry to be classed as Permitted Development on Green Belt land and this will invalidate our local democracy and the role of planning departments in local authorities. The Government have a very confusing survey that you can find on Lee Rowley’s web page if you wish to complete it. Survey to be completed by midOctober on the subject of “Permitted Development Status for this Industry”. www.lee4ned.com/campaigns/fracking-proposals-near-marsh-lane If anyone would like any further information please contact Ian Kassell by email: ianpkassell@outlook.com Ian Kassell 29

AUGUST 2018 WEATHER After the swings and roundabouts of the first seven months of the year August was relatively normal. January, March and April were very wet this year, but February, May, June and July were dry. February and March were very cold, but May, June and July were very hot. In contrast August was only marginally warmer than normal, although it was still fairly dry with about 35mm, half our normal monthly rainfall. Our gardens have certainly been short of water but it has not been a record dry summer, or indeed the sunniest. 1976 was both drier and also sunnier. My weather station recorded the mean temperature, day and night, for August as 15.9°C, with the highest temperature 27.3°C on the 5th Aug. The Met Office in Exeter has announced that June, July and August formed the hottest summer on record in England. The Met Office was based in Bracknell from 1961 until about 2003 when it moved to Exeter to accommodate the more than 1000 employees. Vice-Admiral Robert Fitzroy, who established the met Office in 1854, would have been amazed at the growth of what he started as a network of coastal stations to provide warnings to ships. He had three employees in 1854 and they got their weather information from ship captains. The Met Office was originally part of the Board of Trade but became part of the Air Ministry in 1919 – hence, the expression ‘The weather on the Air Ministry roof’ that was often used by the BBC. Robert Fitzroy was an interesting character who sadly committed suicide by cutting his own throat in 1865. His main claim to fame was as the Captain of HMS Beagle, the ship that carried Charles Darwin around South America. Fitzroy selected Darwin as a naturalist on the Beagle, who would also be an educated companion for the five years at sea. For the most part they got on well together, even though Fitzroy was known to have a terrible temper. Fitzroy became an MP after the Beagle trip and was subsequently posted as Governor to New Zealand. It was on his return to the UK that he started the Met Office and as the forecasts were published daily in The Times Fitzroy became a well-known national character. He actually coined the term ‘forecasting’ and wrote books about the weather. His name appears on several geographical features around the world and of course the Sea Area Fitzroy, to the west of the Bay of Biscay, is named after him. The BBC is now the major provider of our weather forecasts but, much to my surprise, gets its information from the European Centre for Medium Range Forecasts and not the Met Office. Brian Brown 31

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB
August proved to be an excellent month for Holmesfield CC as The Vill won all 4 games it played. This proved to be crucial for the club’s survival as the first games in September were against two highly fancied sides. On 25th August, Holmesfield travelled to play a struggling Holmewood 1st XI near Chesterfield. Winning the toss and putting their hosts in to bat first, David Ward decimated the Holmewood batting by returning stunning figures of 7-23 as the home side were all out for just 120 runs. It took just 27 overs for Holmesfield to hit the required runs despite early wickets seeing the Vill struggle initially at 12-2. Three more wickets were to fall until victory was assured against a fellow struggler. The first day of September saw title chasing Rolls Royce Leisure visit Millthorpe. Winning the toss and batting first, Holmesfield could only muster 148 runs before opener Mayank Sharma ran out of batting partners on 67n.o. Assured batting by Rolls Royce’s openers saw the required runs achieved without losing a single wicket. On 8th September, Holmesfield travelled to promotion chasing Matlock’s 1st XI’s Causeway Lane ground for another tough match. Again batting first after winning the toss, Holmesfield could only score 120 runs with only Neil and Jimmy Pearson hitting any sort of form, scoring 41 and 42 runs respectively. Three players were out for ducks! Matlock’s response was to hit the required runs for the loss of 4 wickets, finishing 133-4 within 35 overs. Survival in Derbyshire County Cricket League - Division 3 had thankfully been assured by the time of the final game of season where Holmesfield travelled to Denby between Ripley and Derby to play their 2nd XI. Another toss won and batting first, Holmesfield hit an assured 296-6 from their 46 overs. Will Hellewell scored an impressive 84 with Jimmy Pearson (61) and Thomas Outram (59n.o.) contributing to a seemingly unassailable score. Sadly the bowlers could not make the required inroads, but at least restricted the hosts to 247-6 to ensuring the season finished on a high with a wining draw. With 4 fixtures left but with 3 of those being away from home (the first against relegation rivals, Holmewood), the table looks a lot heathier after 3 straight victories and survival all but assured. Spondon won the League and will be joined by Rolls Royce Leisure in next season’s 2nd Division whilst Ticknall, Holmewood and Swarkestone were relegated. Holmesfield finished 8th in the 12 team League and should be joined next year by Belper Meadows and Ambergate who were relegated from Division 2 and Chesterfield, Rolleston and Trentside who were promoted.
