HOLM JORDAAN GOLDEN JUBILEE – A TRIBUTE In a time of flux and rapid change, it is remarkable to be able to celebrate the golden jubilee of a firm where the founding partners are still actively engaged in the discipline of architecture. BY ROGER C FISHER
THE YOUNG BROTHERS, Dieter and Albrecht Holm, on their graduation, soon entered into partnership in 1962. Dieter, as every other Head of the Department of Architecture up until the appointment of Prof ‘Ora Joubert at the the University of Pretoria, it seems, did apprenticeship in the office of Brian Sandrock. My knowledge of the partners and their work derives not only from them as a team, but from each individually. Dieter Holm was a teacher, colleague, boss and mentor. At the time of his teaching, he was actively engaged in sustainability as a field, ground-breaking at the time, and in developing a curriculum for its teaching, a direction to which all later students up until the present are heir. From him I learnt the philosophical stance to architectural history as a metadiscipline, in particular of the remarkable synchronicities shared in the thinking of practitioners of disparate disciplines. Albrecht was responsible for my introduction to and serving as pro bono advisor to the then Pretoria Committee of the National Monuments Council. Serving with and learning from him in this capacity has been of great benefit to me, and developed an understanding that has impacted on the teaching of the Department. The expertise of these two partners created an architectural consultancy with both conservation and sustainability, fields in which the practice received many awards and accolades. Gerrit Jordaan joined the firm Holm ARCHITECTU R E | SA 3 2|3 3
and Holm Architects in 1981 and was made a partner in 1983. He is currently the director of the Holm Jordaan Group of Companies. Jordaan added urban design as his field of expertise to the interdisciplinary nature of the practice. His study of Pretoria is oft-cited and remains the touchstone for students of architecture using Pretoria as their laboratory in their design explorations. Deon van Aswegen entered as partner of Holm Jordaan Holm Architects in 1990 after having worked as project manager for the then Department of Home Affairs and Housing on the historic West Façade of Church Square, Pretoria, for which Holm Jordaan had been the restoration architects. Under the mentorship of Albrecht Holm, he has acquired the skills and know-how of restoration, and undertaken a number of major restoration projects. Reinier Visser joined the Group as the Cape Town director in 2000. Since then, he has been involved with numerous architectural and urban design projects for the City of Cape Town as well as for private clients. The consultancy has been invigorated by new blood of Morne and Marguerite Pienaar, a husband-and-wife team who joined the firm in 2007, appointed as directors in 2011. They are practitioners fervent in their exploration of the local relevance of the discipline of architecture in order that they might practice at a level of appropriateness, yet with distinction. The knowledge of these partners has been shared through writings and authoritative contributions to their areas
of expertise. The Holm Jordaan Group (as they are now called) is an exemplary architectural as well as environmental consultancy that has received numerous awards for their architecture, restoration and energy studies also in the fields of affordable housing, urban regeneration and environmental management, ranging through scales from that of the inner city to distant rural locations. It is not only as tribute for having been established for a half-century, an achievement in itself, but in appreciation for practicing their profession of architecture with distinction and merit; imparting a body of knowledge relative and relevant to local and international best practice that we salute their celebrating of their Golden Jubilee.
