HISTORY

The HolmJordaan Group has a history of being at the forefront of environmental thinking in South Africa, thanks to its founding members. Dietrich (Dieter) Holm, who had founded the firm together with his brother Albrecht, undertook several study and research tours to Europe, Scandinavia, Israel and the U.K. after he had completed his studies at the University of Pretoria in 1960.
He worked with Brian Sandrock as project architect on radiochemistry, water purification and reactor buildings. The brothers founded the architectural practice called Holm and Holm Architects in 1962, winning numerous competitions and awards. Since its founding, the practice has been involved in a number of high profile projects in sustainable architecture, urban design, resources planning and restoration.
Gerrit Jordaan joined the firm in 1981 and became a partner in 1983. He was instrumental in building the firm into an interdisciplinary environmental consultancy, specializing in sustainable architecture, urban design, resources planning and restoration. The firm accordingly developed from a pure architectural firm into a multidisciplinary environmental consultancy.

APPROACH HolmJordaan approaches all projects holistically, promoting sustainability as overall goal within all fields of expertise settled in our office.
Green design is not only about energy efficiency. Instead it involves a whole nexus of interrelated issues, including urban, social, cultural, psychological and economic dimensions which are as important as the technical and ecological aspects.Projects range from community facilities to large projects for private institutions, companies and the public sector. Apart from providing pro-deo projects to communities, Holm Jordaan Group has undergone managed change to ensure an all-inclusive consultancy firm, committed to capacity building and Black Economic Empowerment.
We believe in networking with other companies and professionals and facilitate and encourage in-house and external training of our core staff. Apart from this, the following points are noticeable: Members of the firm are actively involved in tertiary training institutions such as the Universities of Pretoria, Cape Town and Wits. Through committing our time, we believe we can contribute towards the training of all future professionals, but specifically the previously disadvantaged.
Gerrit Jordaan, one of the Directors, is a Trustee of the Architectural Career Advancement Trust. Most of our projects, especially in developing areas, are based on partnerships with previously disadvantaged persons. Implementation is focused on capacity building. Where possible, skills transfer is promoted in all projects. Many community projects are done on a pro deo basis to assist local communities.

Solutions ARCHITECTURE
A
Holm Jordaan believes that architecture should respond to the particular place and context of its setting; enhance a site or neighborhood; and be environmentally responsive. Our architecture evolves as a reaction to both natural and urban landscapes, local contexts, in-depth research, pragmatism, vernacular form, climatic devices, poetic design and modern reminiscence.
URBAN DESIGN
U
Through urban design, Holm Jordaan bridges the gap between architecture and city planning. We design the relationship and interaction between peoples’ needs, building groups, infrastructure and landscape by holistically creating a human, functional, sustainable and cost-effective living environment
RESEARCH
R
We also believe in researching each project to ensure that ideas do not only work, but are also on a par with international best practice. Proper research ultimately results in ideas with integrity.
HOUSING
H
In line with the latest national policies towards creating Sustainable Human Settlements, we have years of experience on board towards the creation of urban design and architectural solutions in the housing sector on all scales of the income bar.
HERITAGE
H
We propagate a fresh approach when restoring sensitive historical buildings. We go about this not only in a knowledgeable way, but carry out thorough analysis of the projected future of the building in order to ensure a new lease of life and to make it appropriate for its present or new use.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
S
We approach all projects holistically, promoting sustainability as overall goal within all fields of expertise settled in our office. Green design is not only about energy efficiency. Instead it involves a whole nexus of interrelated issues, including urban, social, cultural, psychological and economic dimensions which are as important as the technical and ecological aspects.
